5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars The very best.......2007-01-11

I have a large collection of classical guitar recordings. Quite simply, "Together Again" is the finest, best recordings of its genre ever made. It features arrangements that had never been before heard and that a big plus, for the normal repertoire for guitar is fairly small and we soon tire of hearng the same pieces again and again. The virtuosity of both Williams and Bream is unqustionalble. Bream sounds a bit steely at times. whereas Williams is soft. Together, they produce a magnificent sound.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2006-03-14

The two foremost virtuosos of our time have come together once again to produce this sublime album.

What John Williams lacks in lyricism is easily compensated for by Bream and the result is outstanding.

Their chemistry is so amazing and the pieces come to life in such a cohesive way that I sometimes think it is one person with 10 fingers on each hand playing the pieces.

Not every piece is easily accessible, so give it time.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent CD for anyone who loves the classical guitar.......2000-06-12

This CD is a must have for all lovers of the classical guitar. As is the case of the first album, aptly named "Together", the modern masters of the classical guitar, Bream & Williams, join forces again in order to achieve some spectacular results.

The main problem of playing a classical guitar is the genuine lack of material, apart from those (relatively few) pieces which were originally written for the guitar. Furthermore, being a fairly limited instrument, the guitar limits severely the possibilities of adapting various classical pieces which were not written originally for the guitar. Thus, Bream & Williams, set out on a mission - to achieve what is not possible on one guitar, by playing a duet of classical guitars. Hence, almost all the compositions here are adaptations, but this is by no means a bad thing - the arrangements very cleverly hides the limits of the instruments, while emphasizing it's intimate and warm nature.

Two of the most notable of these adaptations are "Evocacion", from Albeniz "Suite Iberia" and "Bajo la palmera" from "Cantos de Espana", both of which were written for piano. It is well worth mentioning that many of Albeniz compositions were based on traditional spanish tunes, played originally on guitars. Thus, by playing these truly great pieces on classical guitars, Bream & Williams are restoring some of the magic which allured Albeniz to these tunes in the first place. One might also feel these tunes sound actually more natural played on two guitars rather than on a piano.

Other interesting adaptations are the three pieces by Debussy, which are very melodic and are very suitable to be played on guitars.

I warmly recommend this excellent album for anyone who appreciates classical music played by very able musicians. I guess it's also ideal as a gift for those who like good music which isn't classical, and are interested in exploring new grounds, as this album is very communicative, although it hasn't lost any of it's integrity.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first time.......2007-03-23

The first album pairing Bill Evans and Tony Bennett was a classic - one of the two best albums of jazz vocals ever recorded. When I learned that they recorded a second album, I could hardly wait to hear it.

I didn't find this album as moving as the first. That's not to say that it isn't very good in spots - it just lacks something.

After listening to it several times , I believe that the "something" that it lacks is two things - the tunes are not generally as good, and it was mixed differently.

While there are some very good tunes on this album, they aren't uniformly good, while the first effort featured no weak spots.

Second, Evans' piano is mixed more in the background, making him more of an accompanist and less an equal partner, except when he has a chance to improvise.

On the plus side, Evans does get opportunity to "stretch out" on a few more tunes here.

On the whole, a very good album, but one that doesn't reach the lofty peaks of the original.

4 out of 5 stars Can Lightning Strike Twice?.......2007-03-10

Not in my opinion. On the first CD, both men absolutely "brought it" and the result was magic. There was top-form musicianship and interplay, and the engineering and song selections let both performers shine. This CD, although certainly a fine work, falls short in a couple of ways.

First, Evans seems more relegated to the background. Bennett fans may be perfectly OK with that, but I was not. Several factors could be at work there - the mixing engineer, the take selected by the producer, the comping of Evans, or some mixture of the three. My sometimes fertiles imagination tells me that the producer was thinking, "Let's really reach out the Bennett fans with this one."

Second, the energy of this CD is not up to the first. The most upbeat number that comes to mind, Dream Dancing, is a lot calmer than When In Rome, so the "average energy level" of the entire CD is brought way down. Again, some people may be OK with that.

Third, the performances on this CD seem a little more "phoned in". Evans' playing is always great, but he doesn't play with the authority and fire he has on the first CD. Bennett seems a little tired or distracted. The moods he conjures up seem a bit flat compared to the interestingly dark and sometimes ironic tones he gives to numbers on the first CD. Reasonably minds may differ about that.

If you're wondering whether to get the first CD or the second, start with the first. The excitement of something new comes across and the performers are near their best. If you love it and can't get enough, you'll like this too. If you love Tony Bennett and can't get enough of his intimate "just me and the piano" sound, you will probably love this one too. If you want more of Bill Evans minus trio, you may be happier with Alone or Alone Again.

1 out of 5 stars Whassup Concord?.......2007-01-16

With eager anticipation I opened this CD in Window Media Player. Imagine my surprise when the music started to play and it was blue grass banjo music instead of Tony and Bill. I pooped the CD out and looked closely. Yup! It said Tony Benntett and Bill Evans, Together Again. I wondered which played the banjo and which played the Guitar.

5 out of 5 stars Communicating emotion with and without words.......2005-07-30

This record can help you to feel emotion .
Tony is there to tell you the stories - he is singing songs , but to me he is vocalising the way he feels or talking about something that took place in his life rather than singing lyrics .

You feel it all affects him personally .

Bill supports him and also makes beautiful statements as and when required .
The arrangements are concise and focused , the feel of the whole thing is intimate .
This duo only made two albums together , which make them all the more special .

It's like eavesdropping on a conversation - one we should all hear . Buy both albums by this duo . I will still be listening to both of them ( the albums and the musicians ) in many years' time .

The albums would make perfect gifts .

5 out of 5 stars Spare and Elegant.......2004-02-10

Tony doesn't aim for the heart of a melody. That's his genious. He plays at the edges, sometimes almost atonally, like a jazz riff. But he leads the listener on a journey through the song, aware of all the places he could take it. "You Must Believe in Spring" is one such journey sung with such conviction and soul that it is breathtaking. Bill evans is equally spare and elegant, never overwhelming the song with style. The songs stand on their own like lonely monuments.

This 1964 standout is named for the double-sided single that was the first 45 to place both cuts atop the country charts. In fact, they owned the top two spots on the chart three weeks running, swapping positions in the middle week! "Together Again," a ballad distinguished by Tom Brumley's weeping steel, and "My Heart Skips a Beat," a midtempo shuffle featuring Don Rich's biting guitar licks and high harmony vocals, were both written by Owens himself and perfectly exemplify the Owens writing style: simple and bright-sounding songs aimed at working-class honky-tonk patrons who wanted to forget the real world for a few hours. The remainder of the LP maintains these high standards, thanks to a strong set of original Owens tearjerkers and a number of well-chosen covers--"A-11," "Hello Trouble," "Close Up the Honky Tonks," and "Truck Drivin' Man"--that remain defining, hard-driving Bakersfield classics. Sundazed adds a pair of chart-topping singles from the previous year--"Act Naturally" and "Love's Gonna Live Here"--making this CD release a fundamental entry into any country enthusiast's collection. --Marc Greilsamer

Album Description

Full Title - Together Again/My Heart Skips A Beat. Named after his double-sided number one hit single of early 1964, 'Together Again/My Heart Skips A Beat' is one of Buck Owens' strongest albums of the '60s, as well as one of his few records to stick firmly in the honky tonk camp. Now Sundazed brings you this reissue with 2 bonus tracks 'Love's Gonna Live Here' and 'Act Naturally', both of which were originally released by Capitol as singles. 1995.

5 out of 5 stars This is what country music is all about.......2007-05-26

From the first tune to the last,Buck Owens and his Buckaroos will have you hooked on some the best country tunes out there.Buck and Don harmonize perfectly.Three of Buck's steel guitar players strut their stuff here, most notably, Tom Brumley on Together Again. His seamless turnaround on the steel is a major cause of the songs success and beauty.Ralph Mooney "steels" the show on many of the tunes.Jay McDonald is also a major presence on a few of the tracks. You can't call your collection complete without this CD in it.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best!.......2007-04-11

"Together Again/My Heart Skips A Beat" was on the top of my "must have" Buck owens albums....this album satisfies all my hard-core honky tonk tendencies, song for song it has to rate among his best, from the opening tracks shuffle beat followed by my personal favorite track on here the classic "Close Up The Honky-Tonks", then there is the unbelievably credible country version of "Save The Last Dance For Me" (sounds as if it were written as a country song).."A-11".."Storm Of Love"..they are all good..nary a clunker here...if your a Buck fan?..Order this as fast as you possibly can!...a MUST have!

5 out of 5 stars As Good As It Gets.......2006-08-23

I can't understand how anyone could give this album less than five stars. It just doesn't get any better than this. In fact, it will probably never be this good again.

4 out of 5 stars That song it sure does fit me........2006-08-08

This album by Buck Owens was released in 1964. The title songs were from a single that saw both sides become #1 hits. That was the first time both sides of a single reached #1 on the Country charts. The album included one other hit song, which was a cover of the Drifters' song "Save the Last Dance For Me". Other than the hits, there were a number of other great songs on the album, including "Close Up the Honkey Tonks", "Truck Drivin' Man", "A-11", "Hello Trouble" and "Ain't It Amazin' Gracie" (the latter became a hit when Buck re-recorded it nine years later). The CD adds two bonus tracks, which are the #1 hits "Love's Gonna Live Hear" and "Act Naturally". This is one of Buck's best albums.

5 out of 5 stars When Country was Real.......2006-05-30

Another fine Buck Owens Cd released by Sundazed Records; they've done a great job of re-releasing his collection. This Cd was originally released in 1964, but the sound is incredibly clear. "Together Again/My Heart Skips A Beat" provides 14 of Buck's songs, including a few of his biggest hits: "My Heart Skips a Beat", "A-11", "Hello Trouble", and the greatest Steel Guitar solo yet, "Together Again". The world lost one of the finest stylists ever when Buck recently passed away.....here's your chance to own a little bit of that magic. I'm not sure how long these albums will remain available, but you'd be wise to grab them while you can.

4 out of 5 stars Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

3 out of 5 stars A CD re-issue of a direct to disc recording session.......2007-05-16

There have been any number of odd CD re-issues of this material since it was recorded, not in 1993, but in January 1978 as a limited edition and numbered direct-to-disc LP; arguably the best is the Mobile Fidelity 'gold' CD which was for all intents and purposes a limited issue release and has been out of print and unavailable for years. This CD release will have to do until someone figures out how to accurately re-release this recording with the original liner notes (and I suspect that alternate takes were used on this release). Of note is of course the magnificent backing of the Buddy Rich Big Band and Mel's always impressive vocal prowess and arrangements. This was Buddy's working band, and as such was very comfortable backing vocalists, including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennet, Ella Fitzgerald, and Mel; in fact, Torme and Rich worked together quite frequently in the 80's. Phil Woods, the nonpareil alto saxist, is added for one track, the intro and obigato of the medley Soon It's Gonna Rain / Here's That Rainy Day. Blues In The Night "is the ringer in this set, in the sense that it's not a Torme' arrangement. The chart dates back to one of several albums Mel made accompanied by arranger Marty Paich's orchestra during the 1950's." [quote from the original liner notes by Leonard Feather]. The other chart that was well received was Bluesette, written by Toots Thielemans, the noted Belgian harmonica soloist, and arranged by Mel; Buddy was so taken with the arrangement that he kept after Torme to rewrite it sans vocal part, just for the band. Lady Be Good shows the synergy and cohesiveness that true jazz musicians have together; unfortunately, it appears that the original direct-to-disc take is lost to history, as this take isn't as good as the original D/D vinyl take. All in all, though, this is a fine addition for any Mel Torme fan and should be in your library.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band, Great Singer, Great Charts.......2006-04-01

First cut to last, absolutely wonderful. The most interesting cut to me is Paul Williams' Won't Last The Day, something that was a hit for The Carpenters. Torme is wonderful on it and the charts are superb.

7. Oh, Lady Be Good

Though singer Torme and drummer Rich were friends for years, they never made a recording together until relatively late in their careers. In this album, a new release of a 1993 recording, we hear two giants in their fields having fun together in a direct-to-disc LP which sounds like a live performance. Rich and his band cede artistic control here to Torme, whose arrangements are featured on all but "Blues in the Night," which, incidentally, is an amazing song, full of unusual sounds and tempos, lasting a full eight minutes, and featuring a solo of jazz tuba. Torme has perfect pitch, and Rich has perfect tempo, and together they create a jazz album which goes way beyond the traditional interpretations of these well-known songs, breaking new ground and leaving a legacy for modern performers to emulate.

The album starts traditionally enough with "When I Found You," with the trumpets sounding somewhat distant, allowing Torme's mellow voice to flourish. "Here's That Rainy Day" is one of my favorites here, its introduction also featuring "Soon It's Gonna Rain," followed by a tenor sax solo by Phil Woods (brought in for the occasion), which then continues in the background as Torme turns this traditional song into a slow, bluesy ballad, full of drama, long-held notes, and his lovely vibrato. "Bluesette" features a great Buddy Rich solo, which gradually becomes softer and continues in the background as the bluesy trumpets enter and Torme takes over.

"Lady Be Good," Torme's famous tribute to Ella Fitzgerald is almost totally scat, with musical references to Ella's famous "Yellow Basket." Rich plays noticeable, but not intrusive, riffs throughout. This is an imaginative, interesting, and unusual album, certain to appeal to jazz buffs and fans of Torme and Rich, a collaboration of two of the greats, whose interpretations here bring new sounds and meanings to old favorites. At this price, how can you lose? n Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars Just like the concert.......2007-01-24

I went to the concert when this album was made; the reproduction is great. Both this album and "Together For The First Time,Live", will be an asset to any blues lovers collection.

4 out of 5 stars Good set.......2007-01-08

though I dig the first one better overall there is something about the musical chemistry that B.B.King&Bobby Bland have that blends there styles together so well. "Let the Good Times Roll" is on Point. B.B. with Lucille&Bobby on Vocals make a strong combination. this is a Good Live set.

5 out of 5 stars BB King at his best!.......2006-02-28

I have been listening to this record for over 25 years, BB:s tone on this record still strikes me as it did the first time I heard it. One of BB:s outro:s in one of the medleys on this record is a fantastic value for the price paid for this alone. You can hear a young BB play really loud and strong making his amp sing in fantastic overtones on this one, not that nice and sweet studio tone. The two artists, BB and Bobby, works very well together and if their first record together was Bobbys, this is definitely BB:s.

4 out of 5 stars Great Combination.......2005-01-14

BB on Lucille and Bobby on vocals is a great combination. The two compliment eachother's talents.

Bobby's vibrant personality adds to the fun of this CD. He sings with passion and joy while spending the entire CD hitting on a pretty lady in the audience even making comments to her in between the lines and eventually inviting her to sing.

Neither BB nor Bobby are among my favorite artists. However there is something about the two of them together that makes this CD one of my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Fine, but not as good as their first.......2000-11-19

This is a reprise of the wonderfully successful first album these two did together. It is worth having not only for their obvious enjoyment working together, but for the terrific job in "Let The Good Times Roll".

Otherwise, this is not as good as the first effort, which I thought had much more wide range of songs. Make that your first purchase of these two.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

5 out of 5 stars Koto song concert. THE version of the song........2006-06-30

Koto song is one of the most haunting piece of music I have ever heard. It is ipnotic in its eternal beauty. It is unforgettable. If it was for this tune alone, this album is absolutly one to have. Absolutly and I mean it. But Koto song is not the only highlight of this concert. Rotterdam blues is a wonderful blues. And what about the two extraordinary long versions of Truth and Take five? Gerry Mulligan really shines here. His interplay with Desmond and Brubeck is something of the highest grade. In Take five the band take a long ride on the various modal scales, major and minor in 5/4 time. Really ipnotic this one too. It is a wonderful take five version and I really love the crescendo Dave take at the end of his solo, from 8.05. It perfectly guide you to the drum solo. Really Great!! This album is cool, it swings, it haunts you. I own this since I was a student. The father of a girlfriend of mine had this nice collection of old Jazz records and he was really into Desmond and Mulligan. I put this one and Two of a kind on a tape (it was tape time!) and I did wear out the thing. Those were among the first jazz albums I have ever had. Now I own 7000 but I still listen to these two albums quite regularly (but I still prefer this concert to the studio album from Desmond and Mulligan in their pianoless encounter "TOAK"). I think this album should be the second from Dave one should own, just after Time out of course. But here you have Gerry Mulligan as a nice addiction. Absolutly suggested.

5 out of 5 stars What's Not To Like?.......2005-11-08

The Dave Brubeck Quartet did several *gooood* live recordings. What makes this one stand out is the addition of Gerry Mulligan.

Mulligan and Paul Desmond worked great together - they did another album, "Two of a Mind", where the interplay was almost telepathic - and this CD is no exception.

As with some other reviewers, I too would have preferred to see the "Time Out" personnel, drummer Joe Morrello and bassist Gene Wright, on this CD too, but Alan Dawson and Jack Six fill in nicely. (And this recording was twelve years later...) In fact, the 16:00 version of Take Five on this CD has the time for a longer drum solo than on the original "Time Out" version, not bad at all IMHO.

As for the tracks: "Truth" starts out with a vaguely foreboding motif by Brubeck, very effective, reminding me in concept of a piece like the first movement of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. Alternatively, among well-known jazz CDs, the intro to "Autumn Leaves" on Cannonball Adderley's "Somethin' Else" CD introduces the same mood, although the Brubeck piece turns uptempo much more rapidly. The interplay between Desmond and Mulligan is pretty good on this piece. The improv by Brubeck later seems to recall, what, Edgar Varese? the Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari soundtrack? - but it leads into a nice, if schizophrenic duo with Jack Six.

"Unfinished Woman", a distantly haunting melody by Mulligan, sets up a fine duo between Gerry and Dave...then a contrasting repeat with Paul Desmond and Dave. There is one annoying sub-second dropout about the 5:00 mark during this - don't know if it's just my recording.

"Koto Song" is a placid mood piece - with overtones of the Japanese instrument from which it draws its name. No Mulligan on this piece, which is perfect for Desmond anyway.

What can I add about a sixteen-minute version of "Take Five"? I do wonder what Joe Morrello would have done with the drum solo, which was Brubeck's original reason for writing this song.

"Rotterdam Blues" is more blues-tinged than anything else, but again showcases Jack Six effectively...

...and "Sweet Georgia Brown" is a nice, short, goodbye solo.

The recording, absent one dropout, is good, and the liner notes from the original album are a nice plus.

The only negative I can possibly imagine is that this is *live* jazz. I personally don't think that's a negative, but tastes vary.

So...Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, and Gerry Mulligan playing live...what's not to like? Five stars.

4 out of 5 stars We're Not All Together For The First Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-05-18

If I were to glance at just the title of this cd for the first time, I would think the whole original quartet would be on this album, hence the name, We are ALL Together Again For The First Time. Anyway, the music was allright. Even though I am strictly a Brubeck QUARTET fan only, I didn't dismiss this album and I came to like it. But does Dave have to really put Take Five on every album. Truth is allright, and the rock song is wierd, but ok. Overall, the album was good. Desmond sounded a bit differen't. He probally lost his touch with the instrument, or his will to play!

5 out of 5 stars Get This CD.......2000-06-21

What can be said about this CD, it is simply brilliant. The two tracks, "Truth" and "Koto Song" are enough to make this one of the best Jazz CD's I have heard. Even the rather overly played "Take Five" is inspirational on this CD.

Get This CD!

5 out of 5 stars This is good stuff.......2000-06-13

I'm a teenager just getting into jazz. I borrowed Time Out from my uncle and loved it. I went home and found this in one of our cd drawers. I put it on and was instantly mesmorized. #1 and #4 are especially good. I do like John Coltrane a bit better, but Dave Brubeck has a place in every decent jazz collection.
