Elvis Presley's music in the 1970s is often dismissed as the bombastic, half-hearted hack work of an overweight, pill-addicted, badly dressed has-been. In the liner notes to this five-CD set, Dave Marsh argues that Presley, in fact, created a more impressive body of work in the '70s than almost any other pop act. And the music on this massive anthology backs Marsh up. Stripping away all the garish live recordings and album filler, the package concentrates on a core of 120 songs--the A- and B-sides of every single Presley recorded in the '70s, 46 other studio tracks (including 13 previously unreleased performances), and 27 live tracks (including another 13 unreleased tracks)--that feature a still-magnificent singer collaborating with one of the funkiest bands of its time. This body of work certainly doesn't match Presley's breakthroughs in the '50s, nor does it equal the achievements of Al Green, Neil Young, and Van Morrison in the '70s, but it does stack up well against the work of Bob Dylan and the ex-Beatles in the same decade. Even in his laziest moments, Presley was a master of intonation and phrasing, delivering his rich baritone with a disarming naturalness. And when he caught a spark from his great T.C.B. Band (anchored by guitarist James Burton and drummer Ron Tutt), Presley could still out-sing anyone in American pop. You can hear it here on inspired versions of Tony Joe White's "Polk Salad Annie," Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Working," Wayne Carson's "Always on My Mind," Chuck Berry's "Promised Land," Paul McCartney's "Lady Madonna," Percy Mayfield's "Stranger in My Own Hometown," Dennis Linde's "Burning Love," and Joe South's "Walk a Mile in My Shoes." --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars How soon we forget..........2007-07-13

Those who say that Elvis was no longer relavant, or "setting the tone" for music in the 70's have forgotten the most obvious fact. Elvis had already set the tone in the 50's, and all those who came after were products of that - like it or not. So they were only following Elvis' lead when you say Elvis was out of the loop. The boxed set is genius. Elvis voice is soulful, powerful, and comes with a huge whollop.

A great collection of Elvis music. A must have for any Elvis fan.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis Is Back to LIfe!.......2006-11-10

I was listening Elvis when I was a school boy and now after 30 years I listen Elvis as if he were back to life again and singing to us. I was encouraged by Elvis' songs and again they are encouraging me now in the 21st century!

4 out of 5 stars Many strong performances.......2005-09-30

Towards the end of his life, Elvis was showing signs of burnout and depression, even then, he could still rise to the occassion and belt out a great performance. This is the most comprehensive collection of his 1970's recordings available. It starts off with the classic "The Wonder Of You" and takes you right through all of the singles released before his pre-mature death, several great album cuts and alternate recordings, and a sample of his live show on the last CD. His outstanding performances on "Hurt" and "Moody Blue" show what he was capable of in the months before his death. Makes you think of what might have been...

5 out of 5 stars The Kings Marvelous Last stand.......2005-07-13

Well, This following the essential 50's and 60's, is a excellant representation of the Kings final decade, from tear jerker ballads, to country, to pure rock n roll, This time period is ofte underrated, but produced many great songs for the King.An Awsome live disc displays some killer tuens and great versions of classic songs, definatly a must!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing!!! ('specially for white folk).......2004-03-27

This is an absolute must!!! I have never heard such passionate singing of spirituals from non-black choirs. Perhaps that is attributed to Shaw's minister roots. As usual, the sonority of Shaw's singers is second to none. This is a fun CD that all can enjoy...not just the choral buffs who know just how good Shaw and his choirs are!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not Up to Shaw's Usual Standard.......2002-03-23

Maybe just personal taste. I don't find the arrangements and vocalizing as interesting and satisfying as "Sea Chanties" and "23 Glee Club Favorites", the latter setting a standard never equaled.

5 out of 5 stars A Must CD for Choral Music Lovers.......2001-01-03

Amazing Grace is a very appropriate title for this recording. For those of you who love Sacred Harp , Southern Harmony and Spirituals, you will revel in the folk traditions of this album. Parker and Shaw arrangements, and sometimes just one or the other are so well done. The singers, of course, do an excellent job of making music under Shaw's direction. "Hark I Hear.." arr. by Parker is becoming a standard for choruses and this album will help you hear why. "If I've got my ticket" by Shaw is a wonderful exchange between solo and chorus. You will be playing this CD over and over once you hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Soul-stirring.......2000-08-10

I have thoroughly enjoyed this CD. The thoughtful and meditative, "What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul" sends the listener awe-struck to the foot of the cross. The triumphant "Ride on King Jesus!" reminds the listener of final victory. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates musical and cultural heritage or for anyone who appreciates religious music.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30

Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.

Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".

Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.

For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.

3 out of 5 stars some gold mixed with dross.......2003-12-21

Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile. There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

5 out of 5 stars delightful fare for Paxton fans.......2002-05-04

Tom Paxton has provided the world a treasure-trove of entertaining and thought provoking songs over the span his career. An engaging performer quick to please his audience, my children and I fondly recall an encounter with Tom after a Christmas concert he gave in NYC some years ago. My pre-teenaged son at the time enjoyed 'Fred', one of Tom's songs recounting a relationship between a dog and a flea. The tone of the concert did not call for a performance of 'Fred'. Enjoyable as the concert was, my young son was slightly disappointed. Tom graciously took my son aside and there in the hallway, between greeting fans and signing autographs, sang a verse or two with him, giving him the thrill of his young life. In this new offering, the title song alone is worth the cost of the CD. I first heard Tom perform the song, 'Your Shoes, My Shoes', during a webcast concert from the Kennedy Center in Washington and, was delighted to come across this release. The balance of the collection will disappoint no one. Tom Paxton continues to stimulate our consciousness. Buy this CD. Play it and grow!

5 out of 5 stars Vintage and fabulous Clint Black.......2007-03-25

There's hardly a better song than "Put Yourself in My Shoes" to show off Clint Black's great vocals and harmonica playing. Then add "One More Payment" for great lyrics and "This Nightlife" for an upbeat driving song.

5 out of 5 stars My entry point into country music.......2004-02-20

This is the album that introduced me to country music. A buddy of mine in the Navy insisted I give it a try. The stories Clint Black tells are exceptional. The word play in "One More Payment" is instantly accessible. I thought for years that the "hit song" on the album was "A Heart Like Mine." That song defined country music for me for almost a decade. Since my initial exposure I've gone on to enjoy more a bluegrass flavor (a la Dwight Yoakum) but I still return to this stunning album several times a year. It has stood the test of time, and is a true classic. If you're looking for an entry point into country music, this would be the album for you. Enjoy the word play, story telling, and musical virtuosity on display when you "put yourself in my shoes."

3 out of 5 stars Good on It's Own.......2002-06-27

Clint Black's second CD is pretty good on it's own merits, but pales in comparison to his debut. The title song is terrific, and "Gulf of Mexico" is a beautiful ballad. Also on the plus side is the great traditional country sound - it's not the kind of boring, easy listening stuff that many country stars are recording today. However, most of the songs simply don't stand out in the same way as the hits on his debut CD did. Overall, a good country CD that will likely satisfy fans of Clint Black and more traditional country music.

3 out of 5 stars Decent, But Disappointing Follow Up.......2001-10-13

This is a good album, but is definitley the least involving Clint Black album. There is no awful track here, but there is also no huge standout song either.

5 out of 5 stars Put this one in the CD player.......2000-07-24

I've just ordered this CD after years of listening to the cassette. It is my favorite CD by Clint, the songs seem to flow from one right into the next. Be that as it may, I would buy this CD for the pure pleasure of listening to two of its tracks over and over, The Old Man, and The Goodnight-Loving Trail. When a song can again give me goosebumps after hearing it hundreds of times, it is for real. Wonderful CD to listen to while driving the back roads.

This collection of American songs spanning 150 years shows Deborah Voigt, one of the world's leading sopranos, in a new light. She successfully achieves the transition from the larger-than-life operatic stage to the intimate world of song, especially in the more outgoing, dramatic pieces. Voigt enters into each composer's style with complete empathy. Charles Ives was an irrepressible maverick and a stylistic chameleon. Voigt captures the songs' hymn-like simplicity and irreverent rambunctiousness, though her voice is a bit too heavy for them. Leonard Bernstein's jazzy irony also needs more lightness, but the slow love songs are done beautifully. Voigt really comes into her own in Charles Griffes's lush impressionism, evoking the sultriness of Cleopatra and the rhythms of a Spanish dance, and Amy Beach's unabashed effusive romanticism. Composer Ben Moore is a child of our own time, born in 1960. He moves between many styles with natural ease. Set to great English and American poetry, some of his songs were written for Voigt, and she sings them to perfection. The splendid pianist Brian Zeger provides both leadership and support. --Edith Eisler

    3 out of 5 stars Mixed results.......2006-02-22

This is an interesting collection of American songs, but I don't feel that Ms Voigt sold these selections to me. She still sounds like an opera singer trying to squeeze a very powerful and large voice into smaller setting for these songs, with mixed success. She is much, much better than many of her fellow sopranos that tried such repertoire, but I feel that she only gets it right in Amy Beach and Griffes songs. And even there, she does not have a sound that would make every song recital fan happy.
And what's with the title of this album? I think she is a classy artist and deserves better than such silly title, her label probably came up with that.
Nice try overall, but I hope Ms Voigt will do more Strauss and Wagner from now on, not more songs like these.

2 out of 5 stars Like driving a Ferrari in a school zone........2006-02-02

Like a lot of big operatic voices, Voigt is hard to capture on CD; her recordings of Wagner and Strauss excerpts are good, but they can't convey the experience of hearing her live in an opera house. And singing with only piano accompaniment, as here, she simply can't use most of the power in her voice. As sensitive as her performances are I can't help feeling that she's having to hold back. For American song sung with more delicacy and grace I would suggest Barbara Bonney or Dawn Upshaw (I can't agree with previous reviewers' suggestion of Cheryl Studer's Barber, though Hampson is wonderful on that set).

4 out of 5 stars Stellar Soprano Applies Her Considerable Talent to a Lightning-Quick, All-American Repertoire.......2005-11-08

It's a shame that soprano Deborah Voigt hit her greatest notoriety last year for being fired by the Royal Opera House for being too fat for the title role of "Ariadne aux Naxos" by Richard Strauss. She subsequently lost eighty pounds but luckily none of her vocal prowess as can be heard to great effect on this intriguing collection of American songs, 25 in all and averaging a little over two minutes each. It would have seemed like a mismatch to apply her powerful voice - famous for her big Wagnerian roles - to sometimes delicate tunes. Voigt, however, confounds expectations with a surprisingly nuanced performance that showcases her interpretative skills on a diverse set of musical styles.

Similar to what countertenor David Daniels did with his 2003 disc with guitarist Craig Ogden, "A Quiet Thing", Voigt and pianist Brian Zeger have created a wide-ranging lyrical repertoire that encompasses significant vocal demands while remaining intimate in setting. In fact, both Daniels and Voigt cover Leonard Bernstein's anti-war lullaby, "So Pretty", with haunting aplomb. She also manages to dance effectively over the "Da-ga-da-ga-dums" of Bernstein's challenging "Piccola serenata". Voigt does wonders with the opening Charles Ives selections by not overplaying the innate sentiment of the tunes, in particular, soaring with the highly dramatic "The Children's Hour" by Longfellow and even covering the churchy warhorse, "At the River", with conviction.

There are eight highly individualistic songs by Ben Moore that stretch Voigt with bountiful results. The standouts of the Moore set are the English sea chantey-like "The Ivy-Wife" by Thomas Hardy, the lushly romantic "I Am in Need of Music" by Elizabeth Bishop; the sweeping "Darkling, I Listen" by John Keats; and the discordant waltz, "Bright Cap and Streamers", by James Joyce. For me, the highpoints of the recording are the last two sets by Charles Tomlinson Griffes and Amy Beach, both of whom tap impressively into Voigt's natural theatricality proven especially by her performances of Griffes's lush "Cleopatra to the Asp" and Bishop's rolling "I Send My Heart Up to Thee".

The one shortcoming of the recording overall is that the briefness of the songs does not really capitalize on Voigt's impressive dramatic capabilities in showcasing changes in characters she would have been allowed in her opera roles. For all the limitations it represents, this is a genuine recital album, and truly transcendent moments are fleeting at best especially given the variety of moods that need to be expressed in lightning-flash strokes. However, taken for the genre it represents, this is a stellar recording to appreciate a singer who is able to do more than Wagner and lose weight.

1 out of 5 stars May have a heart but what good is it if the artistic results are a void?.......2005-10-31

The header says it all. Thumbs down all the way. Get instead the Samuel Barber double set with Cheryl Studer and Thomas Hampson if you wish to experience true heartrending Americana. As another reviewer put it, you get no gimmicks and no camp from these two distinguished artists.

5 out of 5 stars Great new context for Voigt.......2005-09-30

It is great to hear Voigt in an American lieder recital. She is a top vocalist in her vocal prime. I think this is a lovely disc, and it really takes off especially with the songs of Ben Moore who has written many works just for Voigt. She tones down the volume of her sound and reins in the dramatic aspect of her soprano to give these songs a proper context and remains in service of them throughout the recital. Give this one a try! EMI - Release her Marshallin from Der Rosenkavalier, I think it would be wonderful. I know she just took on that role this summer.

5 out of 5 stars One of DM's Best Singles.......2003-12-19

My Joy is one of the stronger B-sides Depeche Mode has put out. It's got a strong atmosphere to it, combining symphonic elements with a grunge-sounding guitar typical to SOFAD-era DM, is complete with lyrics and vocals, and also manages to be uplifting, which is somewhat unusual for DM. In addition to the 7" mix, the Slow Slide mix is also very good...in fact, it's one of the only remixes of a b-side I will listen to.

Walking in My Shoes is also a great song, and lends itself well to remixing. Some mixes border on redundancy, but some, such as the Anandemic mix and the Ambient Whale mix take the song in new directions as well as punch up the atmosphere allready present in the original song.

My Joy is one of the better DM b-sides, and the remixes of Walking in My Shoes are among the least redudant and strongest remixes of DM's singles material. If you're looking to pick up DM singles, Walking in My Shoes is a worthwhile buy.

5 out of 5 stars Is just excellent!.......2001-06-08

One of the best DM songs, and the B-Side My joy is also excellent. You've got to buy it!

    5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!.......2000-09-24

What can I say? Walking in my shoes has been for a long time one of my dearest songs. There are amazing tracks and remixes here. The WIMS remix called Ambient Whales is one of the greatest remixes I've ever heard, and the one called Grungy Gonads Mix is may be even greater. WIMS, btw, is so beautiful and sad, and when i listen to it i just feel so relaxed and purified, especially to the end. Typically it's one of those songs that, although somewhat slow, makes you want to jump, run and shout filled with energy. The same applies to My Joy, which has even more energy. I think that My Joy is in the TOP 3 of the best DM songs.Passion - that's what it is about. I really can't understand why DM did not put it in the album - may be 'cos of the short lyrics - who knows. Anyways this track is awesome - a Chinese Wall of sounds - electronic, awesome drums + horns, strings (to the end). And that line "I am not a mountain, no. You move me!" just moves you so much! So you're not a mountain - move yourself and buy this single right away!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars one of the greats...................1999-06-20

When I first heard "Walking in my shoes" I must say it didn't appeal to me and I flipped it to "Condemnation".Well one day I put my cd player on shuffle and I was sitting and I heard this sound like no other sound."You stumbled in my footsteps."I loved it.I love Depeche Mode because they have that dark side to them but they also have that warm side too."Walking in my Shoes" is a great single with great remixes like one of my favourites "anandamidic mix".But I almost forgot about the b-side.One of the best b-sides produced by DM.An almost passion plee from David Gahan singing about the one he loves...........but at this time was it a person or was it heroin that everyone knows at this time, that David Gahan was addicted to.Very dark, ver moving, and very Depeche.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT B-SIDE!.......1999-04-14

The "Walking in my Shoes" single should be recognized for the outstanding b-side track "My Joy" It's what a good song should be, it starts of being catchy, with deep bass and echoing and a little distorted guitars, then ends on a more uplifting emotional drive with the lyrics "you move me" This song is "My Joy"

2 out of 5 stars Needs Stronger Production.......2007-07-23

I would love to say that I enjoyed this solo release from Precise, but then I would be lying. And after careful thought I believe the reason for this is the production. To my ears it sounds very samey, with nothing distinctive to set any song out from the rest. Also Precise raps sound very mechanical and one paced. No doubt I'll be in the minority in my view of this CD, but so be it. With a better selection of beats, and more variety ,and energy to be his delivery, I feel that this could have been a better release.
