5 out of 5 stars Sounds great........2007-03-09

This makes my runs seem alot shorter. I am a former Marine, so on my runs the CD really takes me back to the good days. It makes running alot easier/smother.

5 out of 5 stars Get up, get up, get out of the rack! .......2007-01-19

I initially had this on a cassette tape that has long since worn out. With the advent of digital music, this CD will last long after I'm gone. I couldn't be happier with the memories and motivation the content provides; my wife chose an outstanding gift! For those that served and those that didn't, this CD will spark a fire that will have you humming long after cool down and shower.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-01-18

My son, a poolie with the M.C., is totally motivated every time he listens to this CD. He was just promoted to squad leader and now is learning cadences (from the CD) to use during PT. He loves it.

5 out of 5 stars Great to run with.......2007-01-13

Great songs for your mp3 player as you hit the pavement.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Increasing Speed & Motivation.......2006-11-07

I'd never run to cadence before, so I got this CD to try it out. It's really helped increase my speed and keep me motivated on runs. Catchy tunes. My only complaint is the transition between songs is sometimes choppy and slow but it is a great CD. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-06-01

It's a very good album of cadence. Though, tracks 15-19 are incorrectly titled.

Get the other albums to complete your cadence needs. They total 87 tracks. It's very nice for people who want to learn a few new cadence. Sure, people may think you're a bit off if you listen to it in your car on an 8 hour drive and know all the words, but hey.

4 out of 5 stars Not just for Jarheads.......2007-02-12

On active duty, I could run long distances calling cadences to control speed and breathing. I purchased this CD along w/#1 for over an hour of cadences on my Ipod. Some of the cadences are tame, some of the callers are weak, but the majority of them bring back mostly good memories, and help the time pass on the treadmill. These are running at about an 8 minute pace, you can run faster if you like (so far not an issue for this former Marine!)

5 out of 5 stars Up in the morning with the rising sun..........2007-01-19

This CD brings back memories that help me to slip the bonds of the here and now, enabling a spirited run. Even after a run, the continued cadence makes for a motivational cool down. The rhythm and words bring me back to my time in the land that God forgot.

5 out of 5 stars Motivation.......2002-11-14

Need motivation to get off your butts and run. Here it is. As you sing cadence along with The Marines, you will forget about the pain of the run and do what you need to do.

3 out of 5 stars Sousa.......2007-07-25

I love Sousa marches but this recording while comprehensive and cheep lacks much to be desired in the musical rendension. It lacks the spark and musicality of Sousa.

5 out of 5 stars Sousa By the Royal Marines.......2007-03-31

This is a great CD re-issue of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music under Graham Hoskins. This band did a three LP series on Sousa marches some years ago that was better than most on this very well covered topic. Sousa march recordings will always come and go, but some like this stand out more than others. For one, there is nothing like the panache of a Royal Marines band. Their sound is a time honored development that gets passed from one generation to the next. Even as the number of RM bands continues to change and downsize, there are now about four bands left in the service, their sound quality continues to be superb.

When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.

This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.

Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.

5 out of 5 stars Still Among the Best.......2006-06-01

I bought two audio casettes with these marches back in the 1980's and wore them out. These performances are hard to beat for virtuosity, enthusiasm, and sparkle. The sound quality is outstanding. And there are some marches that are rarely, if at all, available.

5 out of 5 stars How Sousa Should Sound.......2006-03-07

Great value 2 cd disc set cut in the early 1980's & remastered the sound of the Royal Marines Band is nothing short of terrific. Judging by the sound would not be surprised for this to be a combined double RM band. These 1st chair players give Sousa's great marches that extra kick that takes the "March Kings" music to that higher level. By the center quick march!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Run to Cadence with the Recon Marines.......2007-04-06

I love running to Marine Corps cadence. Takes me right back to the fleet. I will say they could have done a better job editing this thing. The time in between the tracks isn't consistent with the timing of the cadence so every ditty that comes up puts you on the wrong foot!

5 out of 5 stars Good for ME! Good for You!.......2005-06-09

i got all 4 of the Run with marines cd's and the Marching one too. it has greatly increased my run motivation. I can't run without them now. This brings back lots of old memories of my 12 years in the Marine Corps. I feel as though i can go right back in and not miss a beat with the young Marines!I used to sing a lot of those same songs when running my Marines. Oh the memories!

2 out of 5 stars 'Double-time' to Cadence.......2005-03-13

This recording is NOT meant as workout aid. The cadence is 'double-time' (equivalent to a 'jog') not 'running.' The numerous jody snippets (and that is what they are) on this and I would assume similar recordings are meant to fill a special niche in music; that being the archiving of the military's equivalent to sea chanties, road gang and field songs. They make hard, boring, repetitive work go easier. God knows pounding down a road for ten miles with a full ruck is a challenge physically and mentally. These recordings would be much more useful workout-wise if, rather than snippets, they were longer. There are a couple of DIs though on this recording that have REAL talent; good 'lyrics', good voices and a hell of a lot of character. As an aside; my the military has certainly become PC since the 60's! These jody's aren't anything like the ones I recall from boot camp - with only one exception that pops to mind. (My '2 Star' grade is for missing the mark as a workout aid. I'd give it '3 Stars' for what I call it's archival 'potential' which could be improved substantially.)

5 out of 5 stars I have only used it like three times.......2004-12-22

But i didnt even get tired with it on, i just listen, and ignore my legs and learn that i really can go on if i push myself to the limit. I say three times, but those were like four miles each run.

4 out of 5 stars MOTIVATION.......2003-12-20

The tempo never changes throughout the whole cd. Some of the cadences are a little corny. But I have to attribute my whole aerobic existence to this cd. You can't quit, the other guys will look down on you, especially your first sargeant! You picture yourself with the group, all of you feeling the same pain. Next thing you know, you look up and you're 3 miles down the road! I've asked for more cd's for Christmas, I've about got this one memorized.

5 out of 5 stars VERY MOTIVATIONAL. Great for running, or even just listening to it........2007-05-12

I was in Navy ROTC (the real kind, not the high school jrotc), and we would go out on pack runs and run with someone yelling cadence. Not very many people knew a variety of cadences to call, so I decided to get a recording of some cadences. Thats how I happened upon this CD. The first few minutes of it are amazing, not that the rest sucks, its just the first few minutes are my favorites. One problem I had that this cd helped with was that when running on a treadmill, I would tend to quit prematurely simply because I was bored. When you run in one spot, exerting all that energy and not moving yourself anywhere, time can drag on so slowly, so I'd quit before I was truly tired. This cd helps the time pass by, your mind is engaged in listening to the new cadences and running your steps in rhythm to the marines steps, which acts as a beat to run by. One more big thing, this CD is VERY MOTIVATIONAL!!! In fact, after listening to it, I "almost" considered joining the USMC. Yes, its THAT motivating, so if you want to push yourself that extra mile, or that extra few minutes, this CD will get you through it. I highly recommend this to any runner of any kind, beginner, marathoner, whatever. I plan on getting the other volumes as well. Hope this review helps you.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as vols 1 & 2.......2007-04-13

I love running to the Marine Corps Cadence CDs. Volumes 1 and 2 are very good. Volume 3 sounds studio produced and more choral. When running vols 1 & 2 are better synched for continuous running. The transitions on vol 3 feel out of synch to me. Others don't seem to agree and I still run to this CD; I'd buy 1 and 2 first if you don't have them.

5 out of 5 stars If you only buy one USMC cadence CD, make it this one.......2005-08-10

I have volumes 1-3 plus the women's volume and this is my favorite. I memorize the tracks then call them out for my platoon on PT days and they love them. Perfect for any devil dog (or anyone looking for motivation).

4 out of 5 stars Great for working out.......2002-04-27

This CD fires me up when I'm running. If you want a change in your workout music, I recommend this CD. You might try (if you have the ability to make your own CD's or if you have an MP3 player) to insert some of these cadences between your other songs.
Overall a fun, motivating CD.
Hoorah!

5 out of 5 stars OOHRAH!!!.......2001-11-15

As an avid supporter of the U.S. Marines and soon-to-be Marine myself, I would rate this up there among the greatest musical purchases I've made. The cadences on this compilation are highly motivating and are good for taking to the gym. There's nothing like singing cadence out loud to make people think you've gone crazy. I thoroughly enjoy this every time I go for a run. From the "1,2,3,4 Marine Corps" with its progressive rhythm to the intermittent delayed cadence calls, it keeps the flow going. There are lighthearted moments in the "Baby Marine" cadence as well as others. If you want to know how the Marines keep motivated on the run, I would suggest buying this. Picking up some tips from the words may work when/if you are called to make up a rhyme on the run. I found myself singing these out loud in the gym, in the car and whenever I need a little therapy. Sure you may get some weird looks but it sure helps to relieve some stress. This compilation rocks, in a word: OOHRAH!!!

5 out of 5 stars Bicentennial Military Music.......2007-03-28

The music from these three US Military Bands was originally released in 1977 as single Long Playing Records to celebrate the Nation's Bicentennial Celebration. It is missing the US ARMY BAND (which I regret) but otherwise the music is GREAT and the Bands are FIRST CLASS as you might expect. Except for the different services renderings of THE NATIONAL ANTHEM, no marches are duplicated. If you enjoy good foot tapping Martial Music...this 2-CD set is worth the price.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed listener.......2006-05-13

I have been listening to military band music for years, and am rarely disappointed. However, this compendium of music by the U.S. Navy, Army, and Marine bands and associated choral groups is not to my taste. Many of the arrangements are strange, and there is much too much vocal music when what I want to hear is the bands play. I would not have bought this album hhad I known beforehand what I know now.

5 out of 5 stars Classic US Service Band Recordings!.......2005-08-10

Its nice to see these old RCA recordings brought out on CD. These were originally released on LP back in the early 1960s to help finance the Kennedy Center in DC. They were popular recordings then. Unfortunatley only three out of the original four are offered here. Missing is the US Army Band which also recorded as part of this series. The sound qaulity has been left largely as it was, which wes pretty good for early 1960s. The only problem with the original recordings was that they tended to sound poor on the inner tracks of the LP. Fortunately that problem no longer exists on CD. Due to the format there tends to be some repeat material here. How many times do we have to hear the national anthem played by each band! Still, there are some good selections played when these bands were in their prime and larger than they are today. Its good to see recordings being re-issued on US service bands other than Altissimo! which tends to use just in-the-can material from band libraries. Here we have the original stuff played in a manner which is no longer done today. For those seeking vintage recordings of US service bands you can't go wrong here.

5 out of 5 stars Great Patriotic Music.......2007-02-21

Beautiful music perfect for feeling patriotic. Received CD promptly and in great condition.

4 out of 5 stars A good choice of tunes with good quality.......2005-06-30

If you like military tunes and marches, this 2-CD is a good choice. The orchestration is good, it is well played and the quality of recording is good. If you like this kind of music, it is a good choice to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!.......2003-08-11

I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.

5 out of 5 stars Best Patriotic Music I've Found.......2001-09-20

Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

5 out of 5 stars Marines CD (unofficial).......2007-06-10

Delightful Cd that is fun to listen to and to work out to. It helps a lot when marching rather long distances to keep the pace up and not loose any energy by trying to count your paces and speed.

5 out of 5 stars "OUT STANDING!".......2005-12-03

I've never been in the armed forces but I love miliary marches.
I use this CD when walking on the treadmill at the gym. You'll be smiling at some of the cadences, and laughing at other times. This is the BEST work out CD ever! You can march (walk) to this CD easily. You'll think the drill sargent is right beside you!

5 out of 5 stars Two tracks made it to my "favorites" mix.......2007-02-04

I bought this when my youngest daughter was sweating through boot camp at Parris Island. I hoped listening to Marine music would help me feel closer to her and miss her a little bit less. I did not expect it to be such gorgeous, soul-stirring music or that I would want to play it over and over long after I got used to my now-empty nest.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievably beautiful and motivating!.......2005-09-21

First, my brother who mentioned the song "THE US MARINES" in his review below hit the nail on the head. If ever there was a song to fire you up to go get some, and instill you with that Old Corps ass bustin' pride, this is it. It alone is worth this cd. But, then you have all the others, including I might add, a version of "Shenandoah" that is the best I've ever heard. If you're a fan of westerns, then you know this song well. From start to finish, this package delivers, with an awesome chorus and extremely accomplished arrangements. One of my favorites of all time, which, along with the cd "MUSIC OF THE MARINES," never strays too far away from me.

Semper Fi brothers.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best military chorus recording.......2005-06-14

It is really a very good CD. If you like to hear a good chorus and a good arrangement easy to listen and easy to sing along, do not hesitate to buy Songs of the U.S. Army, Songs of the Marines, Songs of the Air Force and Songs of the Navy. It is a quality recording and the voices are lovely. Trust me, you will never regret to have bought one, two, three or four of these CD. The songs are sung in a very classic and military way. I love them.

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs.......2002-07-28

I actually bought the cassette while living on Okinawa. The 3 Marine Hymns are different. The first is just the first verse. The second is the whole thing. And the final closing one is just the last lines. I really enjoyed this, especially the song "United States Marines"

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very good CD to buy.......2005-07-06

I have bought many CD regarding American patriotic songs but it is the one that I prefer. The songs are sung in a very classic way and so, there are easy to listen. Jon English as a tenor gives an excellent performance. On the piano, Rob Carriker gives also an excellent performance; he does not try to cover the voice of Jon English but just to support his voice. So, Jon English and Rob Carriker form a very fine duo and the quality of recording is excellent. The choice of songs is also excellent. I strongly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars What an Excellent Work of Art!.......2002-08-30

John English has a booming and resounding voice. Well suited for the rough and tough songs of our countries historic wars. It is an excellent buy, and I recommend it to any fans of great songs and American historics!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2002-08-30

This cd is excellent! I reccomend it to everyone!! Jonathon English has got an amazing voice!

5 out of 5 stars What A Blast - A Fun and Inspiring CD.......2002-07-30

I have to admit - I didn't know what I'd be getting when I bought this album. I love Americana and have known some of these songs all my life: K-K-K-Katy, Keep the Home-Fires Burning, and Tenting on the Old Camp Ground. Others that are listed I had never heard before: The Soldier's Tear, When Alexander Takes His Ragtime Band to France, and the very funny Captain Jinks! From first to last I found this CD a joy to hear. Jon English has a beautiful voice, and he sings with such clarity that you can understand every word! There are songs that will get your feet taping, and others that will bring a tear to your eye. The chorus is quite obviously not a professional choir, and that's all the better! They sing with an infectious energy and spirit that'll make you want to sing along. Add into that the horns, flute and percussion and this album becomes very pleasant experience. This is one of the best CD's I've heard in a long time, and I heartily recommend it.
