About the Artist
Kyros is a group of ethnically diverse musicians which specializes in cross-cultural worship. Ethnomusicologist, pianist and composer, Dr. Abe Cáceres leads the group with his passion as well as understanding of authenticity. Each member also adds a special gift to the ensemble. Reverend Tony Machado brings a theological orientation as well as the energy of percussion with his hand drumming. Brother Bob Foley complements the percussion with his bass playing which is at times rhythmic, and at times melodic. Our lead singers, Sister Karla Cruz and Sister Cookie Henderson, know how to convey the Spirit of God through song. But everyone, especially Brother Bob, jumps in to lead a song when called upon, and the versatility of the group will be heard in the variety of instruments recorded on this album: violin, banjo, xylophones, gongs, steel drum and more. One of the unique aspects of this group is its ability to incorporate the participation of other musicians, both professional and amateur. Hence you will also get to hear sax, flute, oboe, trap set, keyboard and hand percussion played by people from the congregation.
To live in Kyros, God's time, is a goal and a journey. As the musicians of the 1999 Global Mission Events of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), we experienced Kyros. We hope that you, too, can experience "Living In Kyros" with us in this unique collection of Christian World Music.
Product Description
This recording is an outgrowth of the Global Mission Events (GMEs) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, which take place across the country each year. This is a double CD on a single disk and features 19 selections representing 13 different cultures including Ghana, Kenya, Indonesia, Puerto Rico, Cajun, Chinese, Native American (Arapaho), Syria and more. Newcomers to the Christian World Music scene will be delighted by the sounds of African hand drums, steel drums, Arabic tabla and Chinese gongs, and will also appreciate soulful renditions of such standards as "Amazing Grace," "O Healing River," and "I Love to Tell the Story." Most of the music was recorded live at a GME in Lincoln, Nebraska. Four songs were recorded in Milwaukee with an ecumenical choir and instrumental ensemble representing youth, teens, and adults from of Our Savior's Lutheran, All People's Lutheran, Bethel-Bethany UCC, Summerfield Methodist and Saint Casimir Roman Catholic Church.
We were blessed during these events, Says Dr. Abe, and we [Kyros] as a group wanted to be sure that the blessings would be multiplied. So we produced the album and decided that $1 of each sale will go to a charity. The first beneficiary of sales from this CD will be the World Hunger Appeal of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA).
