Timeless Classic.......2007-05-14
"Living Stereo" was the name of RCA'S highest quality recordings. The three major labels, RCA, Columbia and Capitol all invested large amounts of money and effort to improve, indeed, perfect the new LP stereo recordings of the 1950's. This album presents a good example of RCA's labor and technology. Although some of these songs are generations old and recorded on rather primitive equipment, they still sound great. Thanks to digital technology, these precious gems sound better today than they did when they were first recorded almost 50 years ago. I bought the LP, then the cassette version so I could listen to it in my car as I traveled the Pacific Northwest selling records and tapes to retailers. You will enjoy listening to the harmony of this cowboy classic.
The last round-up.......2007-04-19
As a small child in the early 1960's, I was given an EP of four songs that were originally on the COOL WATER album (these were: "Cool Water," "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," "The Last Round-up" and "Ghost Riders In The Sky"). At the time, I didn't know who the Sons Of The Pioneers were and had never heard any of their music. Long story short-- I LOVED that record. So, many years later, when the opportunity presented itself, I gladly bought the LP.
This early stereo recording (1959) is a marvel. Traditional cowboy songs with a full (yet not intrusive) orchestra. Gorgeous harmonies, classic tunes and excellent sound. COOL WATER is a truly great album that all fans of traditional American music should own. Highest recommendation.
cool water music cd.......2007-01-09
the songs where sung by some of the oldest western singers in the 20th century, such as autry murphy and roy rogers.
the group was called the sons of the pioneers and if you consider that the wild west still was in the early `900's and tombstone still had stages and sherrifs you can see why.
if you truly like REAL country or western music, then sons of the pioneers is for you
Stands Alone In Time & Genres.......2007-01-09
First the history of this album for me, then my impressions of the CD.
As a kid, we'd leave my hometown of Tulsa and make the drive to my Great-Grandparents' home, in the little town of Holdenville, Oklahoma. While the adults hung up coats and fixed lunch and talked and talked and TALKED, I'd race to the back room.
The back room had tinkertoys, a handful of trinkets gathered from local eating establishments, but for me it mainly had a record player and a stack of records.
It didn't take me long to figure out that very little of my Great-Grandparents' music was going to appeal to me; however, among the stack, I found this album. I loved it immediately and played it every time we went to their house.
Years later I inherited that album, but by that time a bad needle had ruiend the recording and none of the digital "tricks" I had could resurrect it.
Fast-forward to today, and the CD arrives!
As you might imagine, I had high expectations for this CD. Not only does it meet my expectations, it completely exceeds it.
First, the songs are of course exactly as I remember. However, it's like a veil has been lifted between me and the performace... this isn't sound in a groove coming from a cone, they're performing in the room! I'd forgotten how irresistable it is to harmonize with them.
The dynamics are at least as wide as on the album, actually wider because there's no "overload" point where it turns to fuzz. Voices truly soar.
The recordings, while focused on the nartually-eq'd voices, are deep, rich, full, clear, crisp and fresh. This is a very well-balanced recording!
O.K, finally, this is a recording from analog tape form 1959... how's the hiss?
ABSENT.
No joke. I like to think I've got pretty sensitive ears, and I'm not hearing ANY tape noise even at loud volumes. Absolute worst noise is the slightest 60 cycle hum at the beginning or end of one or two tracks when one mic is open by itself. Frankly, I'm not convinced I'm hearing that! I don't know if the RCA producers were magicians with analog tape, or if the company that mastered this CD figured out how to take out the hiss without disturbing the rest of the music... but it is whisper-quiet. the CD label says "Advanced Noiseshaping Redither," and maybe that's the magic... whatever it is, WOW!
In very brief moments, to only the slightest degree, is there a hint of analog overload, but it NEVER distracts from the music and is only a surprise because you almost forget this isn't a full-digital recording!
If you have the SLIGHTEST interest in the Sons of The Pioneers, cowboy music, or simply want an excellent example of what the medium was / is capable of, please do yourself a favor and get this CD!
P.S. - An added bonus for me: ironically, my Great-Grandparent's copy was MONO. Obviously, these recordings were meant to be heard in stereo. If you listen to the files on this page, you'll hear some of the problems of listening in mono: phase issues, etc. Buy this, and listen through headphones for best effect.
P.P.S. - Dig that bass singer!!! :-)
Wonderful Western Songs By A Great Group.......2006-08-09
This CD has some great songs sung by The Sons of the Pioneers. Ridin Home, Way Out There and Riders in the Sky are outstanding. This is the group that carried on after Bob Nolan retired. The singer who sounds like Bob Nolan is Tommy Doss who does a great job on Riders in the Sky and others. I bought this album in 1959 when it was originally available, and am happy it is now on CD.

beautiful music, excellent voice.......2006-11-06
I believe this is a wonderful CD and you will enjoy it any time. It combines different rithms and Marta's voice is incredible. I love all the songs in the CD.
Songs from the heart.......2006-11-03
I became aquainted with Marta Gomez after hearing her song in the Putamayo CD - Women of Latin America. Looking for more of her work, this was the 1st one I purchased, and I'm glad I did. The combination of her sweet voice with the simple yet full of wisdom lyrics (granted, you have to understand the language) make Cantos de Agua Dulce unbeatable.
Just a note on the name, it should be Songs of the Fresh Water. Similarly the English translation of the lyrics on her web site could be improved a bit.
cantos de agua dulce.......2006-03-01
I like her songs because the thems and her voice that have a unique and sensual expression.
beautiful voice.......2005-08-22
I heard Marta Gomez live in some basement of the Jewish Museum in New York City in July, 05. She sounded like an angel to me and this CD doesn't loose that sound. Good music for background during a dinner party or hanging out at home with my sister.
You can't go wrong with Cantos De Agua Dulce.......2005-08-03
I heard a review of this CD on NPR and ordered it the same day. From beginning to end, it's easy on the ears... Marta's voice is pure and angelic and perfectly supported the sophistically simple play of her band - everything is clear as a bell. I don't understand or speak Spanish and that, to me, is part of the magic - one can revel in the joy of the music itself. On the other hand, my wife does understand most of the lyrics and loves this CD too. We've both given copies of it to family and friends. Throw Cantos De Agua Dulce in your car's CD player and drive. Who know's where you'll end up? But you'll enjoy the journey.... you can't go wrong.

Album Description
Simon & Garfunkel's 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' was the hottest album in the land in 1970, & Paul Simon's tunes from that & their earlier albums unexpectedly find a congenial advocate in Paul Desmond. Against the odds as determined by bopsters, Desmond finds something beautiful, wistful, and/or sly to say in each of these ten tunes, backed by Herbie Hancock's Rhodes electric piano & a set of ravishing orchestrations by Don Sebesky. Hancock's solos often reflect where he was personally at in 1970, with ideas transferred from his progressive electric Sextet. This is a Creed Taylor production in all but name; the sound, track editing, & production values are right in line with the A&M CTI line, but Sebesky is listed as producer, Taylor having recently severed his ties with A&M to form his own label. Polydor/Japan.
Album Details
Japanese Reissue of the Jazz Sax Giant's Tribute to the Songs of Simon and Garfunkel. Desmond was an Unexpected Advocate of Paul Simon's Music and Recorded These Tunes, Lending a Unique Jazz Perspective of What was Regarded as Pop Music of the Time. Though Production is Credited to Don Sebesky, the Sound Heard Here Has the Fingerprints of Trademark Creed Taylor Productions all Over It.
Customer Reviews:
#1.......2003-06-19
This Creed Taylor/Desmond gem is about as good as he did, and I am among those audiophiles that have been burned far too many times by my "favorite" artists trying to interpret current "pop" music in a genre which frankly should generally stick to what it knows best. But when you hear the title tune, you are convinced that Don Sebesky knew where this was going from the very inseption. This is one "customs overpriced" cd you will thank God for. Lush, so well arranged that I wore the vinyl record out twice. "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright" is a song most jazz artists would not touch, yet this one is so lush, it will blow your mind.."how did they do that?" Incidently, if you are a drummer, you'll flip over the emphasized sound here! Finally, for once a collection of music that probably could pass muster for more styles than any disc you'll ever own. It is jazz, easy listening, pop, and so close to new age it is hard to believe this was recorded so long ago. Desmond was infamous for blowing so soft it seemed like he used a whisper to play and you'll never hear him softer, over-all, than here!
Paul Desmond "Bridge Over Troubled Water".......2002-05-09
This album is a vibrant and sensual arrangement of Paul Simon's finest music of the Sixties. The lush arrangements of Don Sebesky allow Paul Desmond to carry these melodies with ease without distracting the listener. Desmond successfully evokes and conveys the romantic and often times haunting "cinematic" qualities of Paul Simon's lyrics. Desmond's rendition of each melody is so lyrical, you could swear the words were being sung. What is so magical is that Paul Desmond can seamlessly connect his solos to the melodies without losing the essence of each piece. (America is a vibrant example of this.) No doubt this is a signature trait of Paul Desmond's sound. The listener will not get lost in some esoteric free form solo and then suddenly brought back to some truncated melody. Desmond takes you through a gorgeous journey of melodic exploration before recapping gently bringing back the listener to the theme. Those who are familiar with Desmond's work in the quartet setting may not appreciate Don Sebesky's instrumental backdrop. Unlike some of the vapid "sleazy listening" renditions of Beatles tunes bleeding through the elevator speakers, Don Sebesky gives girth to each piece with well thought out textures that will not leave you limp. It would simple to dismiss this overlooked jem as an "easy listening" Album. Hardly so, Desmond's rich thematic explorations in Paul Simons music is a veiled complexity that will give any listener, student of jazz , professional musician or any composer many hours of listening pleasure. The players on this session read as a "who's who of jazz." : Herbie Hancock, Airto, Ron Carter, just to name a few.

With Bernard Allison following the North Mississippi Allstars and Susan Tedeschi onto its roster, Tone-Cool has become home to the blues' most exciting young talents. Like his dad, the late Chicago guitar hero Luther Allison, Bernard likes to mix his music with rock and soul. This CD starts with a burst of uptempo funk ("The River's Rising") and quickly passes through six-string metallurgy ("I Just Came Back to Say Goodbye," with it's ZZ Top rhythmic bedrock and squealing guitar), Johnny Taylor-style ballads (like the Malaco-perfect "Work It Out"), and other permutations. Although Allison's voice possesses a serviceable simplicity, it's his guitar that really sings, chorus after chorus packed with keening wah-wah and daredevil bends. It's also full of down-to-the-bone blues runs, like the solo that tags the funky "Higher Love." Allison shows some Texas sting, too, especially on a Stevie Ray-style guitar epic called "I've Been Down," which should produce fireworks live. --Ted Drozdowski

Can't review what I haven't heard (had to assign rating).......2004-08-31
I would like to review this CD, but Amazom has been stringing me along since mid-May 2004 with delay after delay in shipping. Still haven't received the CD, and according to Amazon, I might not get it before mid-October. The only thing I can review is Amazon's service and I rate it 0 stars!!!!
This guy is sizzling and he rocks!!!.......2004-05-04
This is the first cd I have heard from BA. He's just as good as his father Luther Allison. He has the Jimi Hendrix/Stevie Ray Vaughn guitar sound down real good. After hearing this one I went and dished out some cash for more of his works. He has gone a step further than his forefathers B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, etc. He is in the New Blues scene along with Kenny Wayne Sheppard", "Eric Gales", "Joe Bonamassa", "Doyle Bramhall II" and "Graig Erickson." Check them out also.
Rising son........2001-10-04
Bernard Allison follows in the footsteps of his father the great Luther Allison with an album that powerfully fuses rock, blues and soul and, especially his own guitar chops that can rival Robert Cray's.This is a great album, while the cover versions of Joe Cocker's 'The River's Rising'and Colin James' 'Just Came Back'are as good as the originals.Bernard easily displays the explosive style of his father making for a great live experience.
Powerful Electric Blues.......2001-02-03
I was introduced to the music of Bernard Allison by the words "If you are into Walter Trout, you will like this." Then followed the song "I Just Came Back to Say Goodbye" from this album. I was rocked back by the sheer intensity and quality of the track.
It is the highlight here. It's the best rock song that I've heard for a very long time and I simply had to go out and buy the CD to hear the rest of the music.
The CD is mostly electric blues with flashes of other musical styles. Some of the songs are original while the others are the work of an assortment of musicians including of course Bernard's father Luther Allison.
Bernard Allison has a great guitar style. Combining blues lyricism with rock intensity in a manner closer to Hendrix than to Clapton. The only thing that lets him down a little is that his voice neither matches his musical style nor comes up to the standard as his playing.
His style will not appeal to traditional blues aficionados but it you appreciate Clapton, Hendrix and the like then this is a great CD. "I Just Came Back to Say Goodbye" is a song that everyone should listen to.
Magical work!!!.......2001-01-10
We don't need to be a blues purist to understand all of this amazing work of Bernard Allison. All we need is to be on tune with the new tendences of contemporary blues. Of course it's far from that Delta Blues style. This is the most pure Chicago's Blues and mixed with Rock'n Roll spices. This cd is a great surprise in all the ways we analyse it. The presence of SRV,Robert Cray,Hendrix, and specially the legacy of his Dad,Luther Allison,is fantastic in all the tracks. Undoubtedly,a great blues cd one of the bests of my collection. I really recommend this cd,and i can say that Bernard is really one of the best emerging artists of the blues!!!! A Gem,A Gem,A Gem.....!!!!!

all.......2007-03-08
Cool Cool Water and Whuskey brought me back to the 1940s when alot of music meet something in a better life than now with music going no where. Today Country music has little in it .Too BAD.But I'm just a country boy of middle 60's in age.
An excellent 25 track collection of the Sons' RCA 1940s work.......2003-05-07
These tracks were recorded for RCA Victor from 1937-1951 and ASV as put out this excellent sounding compilation of their best from this period. Roy Rogers only appeared on 4 tracks of this CD but of course, with and without Roy, the music is great and some of the highlights include the RCA Victor recordings of "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and "Cool Water," the WWII war song "Stars and Stripes on Iwo Jima," "Wagons West," "The Last Roundup," "Red River Valley," and "Cigareets, Whusky and Wild, Wild Women," but the entire CD is full of great music. If you already have their Decca recordings on greatest hits CDs and can't afford to shell out the Bear Family boxed sets, this is the CD to buy for their 1940s RCA recordings as the music is timeless and they are one of the greatest vocal groups of western music ever.
Sons of the Pioneers.......2003-05-01
If your a Sons of the Pioneers fan,ya gotta add this one to your collection. It does have some of the standard "Sons" songs, but there are some gems on this C.D. "Serenade to a coyote" is my favorite on this C.D. It seems that the more i look for sons of the pioneers music, the more i appreciate what they did for "Cowboy" music

Customer Reviews:
My Desert Island CD series........2000-05-02
If the "desert island cds " permit series productions, then this Burns complete songs is definitely my first choice.Since I'm a desperately song fan, as new numerous records prevail, in fact few really allure me beside the Hyperion Schubert and CPO Loewe. But when I first listened to the songs here, I was trembling! What a excitement! What a great project to record all Burn's 350+ songs! Even more, the performance, recording, singing, arranging here are all incomparable. I eagerly wait for the rest of this series.
I was very impressed.......2000-01-11
I was very impressed with everything about this CD. The artists, songs and styles were the best I've heard. Needless to say, I will go on to purchase the remaining vols, and suspect you will do the same.
Unbeatable.......2000-01-11
What can I say about this CD, and the other available volumes that I purchased immediately after hearing vol 1. The collection is simply unbeatable, and I can't help but feel that others will hold it in the same regard. Wether you have expressed an interest in Burns before or not, the sheer quality and composition of these volumes will hold you in awe. Their's only one thing further I can tell you: buy it, you won't regret it.
