5 out of 5 stars Must Have 70's UK Punk.......2007-02-11

These guys rocked the dives of the UK. This CD version doesn't have the sonic impact of the LP version. Get past the Clash and Pistols and you'll find that the scene had some other great rockers.

5 out of 5 stars The UK Subs Are Punk Rock Legends.......2003-11-13

It's amazing to see that the UK Subs are still going after all these years, since frontman Charlie Harper was the old man of the original punk scene when the band first formed in '77, which somehow seemed suspicious in a scene that was so youth-oriented and dedicated to overthrowing the old farts. He's now pushing 60 and still touring and belting out the punk rock, which is either desperately sad and pathetic or rather inspiring as the rest of us reach middle age, depending on how you look at it.

Harper was a legend on the early punk scene and could frequently be seen propping up the bar at 100 Club punk gigs in varying states of inebriation throughout the late `70s and early `80s. Throw in the fact that virtually every offstage picture of him includes the mandatory glass or can of beer and it adds to the amazement that he's still alive, let alone that he's continued touring with the Subs all these years later!

I loved the Subs. From the first time I heard the single "Tomorrow's Girls" to the release of their first album "Another Kind of Blues" in '79, I was hooked. I still have both, and they continue to occupy pride of place in my old record collection. The Subs had catchy tunes, great trademark chugging riffs from Nicky Garrett (one of the best guitarists in punk, bar none), Charlie's pub blues with attitude vocals, and a dynamic live delivery. In my very first band when I was 16, we did covers of early Subs classics "CID," "Lady Esquire," and "Warhead."

After the release of their excellent second album "Brand New Age" and a live album "Crash Course," the Subs improved themselves by replacing bassist Paul Slack and drummer Pete Davies with the best rhythm section in the genre, bassist extraordinaire Alvin Gibbs (he of the ultra cool, impossibly low-slung bass) and drummer Steve Roberts. I saw this lineup steal the show as co-headliner with the Damned at `81's Christmas On Earth punk festival in Leeds; Garrett, Gibbs, and to a lesser extent (well, he was an old man even back then!) Harper a blur of nonstop energy up front and Roberts pummeling the hell out of his kit at the back and none of them missing a note.

After the disappointing "Diminished Responsibility" album, which suffered from a muddy production by apparently AWOL Gary Glitter producer Mike Leander which Garratt tried to rescue without much success, the Subs put out arguably their best ever album with `82's "Endangered Species," which featured a slick, clear, full production courtesy of Garrett and musically bordered on metal years before the punk-metal crossover officially took place. Indeed, the likes of the title track, "Living Dead," "Countdown," and the awesome "Lie Down and Die" could be full-on metal songs but for Harper's snotty Cockney punk vocals.

These sessions also produced "Plan of Action," which sadly didn't make it onto the album (though it is on the CD reissue) but was the B-side of the "Countdown" single and is perhaps my favorite ever Subs song, another absolutely blinding up-tempo rocker. The Subs deserve a lot of credit for effectively presaging the punk-metal crossover trend by several years with "Endangered Species."

This album also included "Down On The Farm," which would be covered years later by Guns `n' Roses on their "The Spaghetti Incident" album and happily provide a source of supplemental royalties income for songwriters Harper, Gibbs, and Garrett in perpetuity (or at least as long as people keep buying Guns `n' Roses albums). There were a few experimental post-punk numbers on "Endangered Species" as well, like "Sensitive Boys," "Ice Age," and "Flesh Wound," which don't really work but show that there was more to the Subs than just bashing out three chords.

Sadly, despite hitting their artistic peak, this was to prove the swansong for the best version of the Subs and they split the following year. With Garrett in particular replaced by a series of no-hopers, I quickly lost interest in what had been one of my favorite bands.

The recent resurgence of punk, including the Sex Pistols reunion tours, has led me to rediscover how great these early punk pioneers were. So when I saw the Subs were still going, I did some investigating and discovered not only that Charlie has been touring with constantly rotating lineups ever since I stopped following them, but that -- praise be! -- Garrett and Gibbs rejoined the fold in '96 and they released two very good 20th Anniversary albums in '97, "Quintessentials" and "Riot."

Though separate releases, these are essentially a single double album and were recorded simultaneously in Garrett's new hometown of San Francisco where he runs the New Red Archives label. They pick up where "Endangered Species" left off and feature a crisp, clean production and suitably fierce guitar sound (Garrett has lost none of his chuggability and knack for a tasty lead over the years). Drummer du jour Dave Ayer does a decent job thumping the tubs (though without the distinctive hard-hitting flair of the great Steve Roberts, Alvin nails the bass like he always does, and Charlie sounds like the same old (and I do mean old!) Cockney wise guy we know and love -- no mean feat for a man reaching pensioner age who's lived the kind of lifestyle he's lived all these years. If you love the Subs or old school punk or just straight up power rock, you should pick up "Quintessentials" and "Riot."

What's more, I did a little more digging and discovered that this wasn't the first Subs reunion effort -- Harper, Garrett, and Gibbs got together back in '88 to release a one-off album, "Killing Time," which I also picked up cheap and second hand off the internet. It's very good too, alternating a more metallic, polished sound a la "Endangered Species" with some lighter, more experimental post-punk moments.

Vive les Subs!

5 out of 5 stars Best of British!!.......2001-05-13

I bought this album more than 20 yrs ago, when it first came out, and it's still the real cracker it was all those years ago (makes me nostalgic). This is a great piece of good old-fashioned British poppy punk, with crashing guitars, sing-a-long tunes and a sprinkling of vintage punk anthems, including the absolutely fabulous "Tomorrow's Girls". Great value for money with so many tracks, but then in those days, they were only about 2 minutes long. Rates in the top 100 best U.K. punk albums by any estimation.

5 out of 5 stars Charlie can make good music old and new !!.......2000-09-21

This is still one of their best as all the others, sounds great,it's fun, fast, and Charlie can sing, hope he's with us forever !!!!

4 out of 5 stars Smooth laid back H-Town funk.......2007-01-31

T.O.A.K. hits us in 1998 with a short but sweet album. The beats for the most part are laid back keyboard ridden G-Funk that rivals some of the best G-Funk beats from the west or third coast, although the sound and the bass of the beats are faint probably due to the equipment. "Gulf Is Coming Up" is an upbeat prelude to what we have realized in the past few years (esp. 2005 and on)that H-Town is on top of its game and has blown up big! "It takesa D.I.M.E." and "Rollin' Kandy" also add to the smooth effect. I love the suave, slower "M.oney O.ver E.verything" and the upbeat melodies of "Robbery." "Circle of Society" is an emotional slick slow rolling joint reminiscing on hard times and keeping ya head up. "Get Down" is an odd but interesting track because Flavor Flav kicks in some flava over an old school Public Enemy inspired beat. The club and original of "Say What" however, depart from the overall smoothness with bouncy, mediocre beats, and "Devil's Backbone" could have been excluded; this song is hardcore, but also departs from the smoothness. If these 3 had been excluded or replaced with more smooth funk, this album would have been a classic, and perhaps among the best of the best.

5 out of 5 stars a testament to old blues & hope for new folk.......2002-01-02

Both Another Kind of Blue and Walkin' Around are exquisite testaments to Peter Keane's skill. Both are full of Keane's inspiring versions of songs from artist like Dave Van Ronk, Bob Dylan, and of course Mississippi John Hurt. Gems on Another kind of Blue include "Call it Sleep," "Another Kind of Blue" (like the album this song was inspired by Miles Davis's masterpiece "Kind of Blue"), "Everything's about the Same"... and almost every other song on the CD. Keane is a fantastic interpreter, and his voice can perfectly capture both the raw emotion of old delta blues and bob dylan and a brand of smooth melodic emotion that's all his own. Keane's innovative lyrics and can be playful and subtly funny as well as absolutely heartwrenching. I have seen Peter live twice, and he is a fantastic artist. I would reccomend both his CDs to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars SKILLFUL MARRIAGE OF BLUES AND FOLK.......2001-09-03

On this cd, Peter Keane continues to produce some of the most skillfully played, listenable music coming out of Austin over the last few years. He moved here from New England a few years ago -- and it's been very much to our gain to have the opportunity to hear him perform with the frequency of a 'local artist', but with the finesse and ability of one who should, by rights, be much more widely known and appreciated.

Accompanied on this disc by Charlie Larkey (upright bass, who also did a nice job producing this release) and Richard White (drums), Keane's acoustic guitar playing -- amazing without being showy -- and vocals are framed nicely by the arrangements. With Chip Dolan adding his always-tasteful touches on organ, and some fine pedal steel work from Herb Steiner added here and there, the album has a 'just-right' feel -- the musicianship is excellent throughout, never getting in the way of the songs.

And the songs...Keane's choices run from classic acoustic blues works by the likes of Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James, Blind Willie McTell and Big Joe Turner to the more contemporary blues of master Dave Van Ronk, to more singer-songwriter-oriented material by Steve James and Austin's own Chris Montgomery. Add to these some well-written originals by Keane himself, and you have a cd program that's very indicative of the mix you'd hear from Peter's trio if you're lucky enough to catch one of their live shows. This is not a case of a performer trying to put something into his set to please everyone -- it's an example of someone who knows that good songwriting knows no genre boundaries.

Peter's voice is extremely versatile -- he's equally at home on a Delta blues from the 30s as on a tune he's written himself, or one that he's heard from another contemporary writer that has touched him in some way. Far from making for a disjointed, choppy selection, the songs flow gently and gracefully from one to the next, spanning styles and decades almost unnoticably.

Every track on this cd is great, but I'll mention a few (to me) standouts. 'Columbus Avenue' is one of my favorite Keane originals, starting the album off nicely -- it's easy to hear his blues influences at work here. 'Illinois blues', a Skip James tune, gives us a taste of the music that lives so brightly in Keane's heart -- he calls James' music 'spooky', and it definitely has that feel to it. 'Call it sleep', by Chris Montgomery, is simply a beautifully-written, poignant song -- a working-class man hanging on to his day-to-day life by his fingernails, fighting the dull ache that tells him life should offer him more. 'Talco girl', by the great songwriter Steve James, contains lyrics that are incredibly full in their simplicity -- so much is conveyed so skillfully. The last track on the cd, 'Another kind of blue', is another Peter Keane original -- a beautiful, memorable melody and a great mood piece with which to finish up an evening (or this disc).

Keane's musical heart and soul are definitely rooted firmly in the Delta blues tradition of the great players of the early 20th century -- but he is also his own man, adding his own touches to the classics and writing some of the finest contemporary acoustic music around today. He's an unassuming, un-posing, talented performer/writer who loves the music enough to let it speak for itself -- his relaxed, unpretentious style raises this music to a level that allows the listener to savor it as something special and rare, at the same time receiving it more like a gift from a neighbor or friend than as an untouchable piece of 'art'.

Also highly recommended: Peter's WALKIN' AROUND (1996) on Flying Fish/Rounder. See him if he comes your way -- you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars literate, yet real.......2000-08-14

this is the third album i've gotten of keane's and while they've all gotten heavy play in my truck, this one made the top rotation. really well written and interpretted songs played by expert musicians with great feel. also an excellent choice of material. i keep putting it in expecting to get sick of it but i don't. my favorites are illegal man, sunday street, and talco girl. they represent widely diverse styles that are somehow brought together by keane's distinctively gritty voice and the great music sensibility of the trio.

    5 out of 5 stars I can't stop playing this cd.......2000-08-09

Keane doesn't disappoint with this, his third album. Keane has once again combined re-vamped classic blues (from the likes of Blind Willie McTell) with some contemporary covers (Dave Van Ronk's Sunday Street) and his own thoughtful originals. The traditional folk and blues influences are evident, especially on the tracks which highlight his exceptional fingerpicking technique. If you have ever heard Keane's music, you are left knowing it is only a matter of time before he is the next big thing in the "Americana" scene. Keane, like other singer-songwriters is best experienced live, but this cd captures the mood and energy of his live performances (though you will miss his funny commentary between songs). Another stellar album from a soon-to-be household name.

An intro. to the early Subs. The first half of this cd contains the classic studio album reviewed in the US releases. The second is a live show. Rollicking, intense, and pure UK Subs. The playing isn't too clean, but it doesn't matter. The show wasn't about showing off with guitar heroics. Fantastic live version of Teenage follows a sarcastic plea of the elderly Charlie Harper to "stop rippin' the chairs up. Charlie has had numerous heartattacks on stage, but still continues to tour and make albums continuously. Guitarist Nicky Garrett runs the New Red Archives Label.

Some people think the uk subs are "second generation punk" what ever that means, this is a classic punk album from an original punk band who were one of the last bands to play the now legendary Roxy Club in London (closed december 1977). The uk subs represent British punk at its finest and this album is a must, if you dont aleady have it.
