Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25
First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.
It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23
Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."
His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.
For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.
Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.
He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.
Nostalgic.......2006-02-20
A great trip down memory lane. The selections sound just like I remember them from the movies and the radio. Enjoy
Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits.......2005-07-13
This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,
enjoy!!

Customer Reviews:
Not My Style.......2007-05-11
This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!
Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28
For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.
Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16
This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.
Western Music.......2005-07-29
I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."
A great follow-up.......2003-08-29
This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

High Cost, Little Quality.......2007-06-07
This CD is such a disappointment! I sing with a traveling theater group and thought I could practice to this karaoke disc. Not a chance! The quality is poor-synthesized instruments & wrong notes and chords all over the place!Don't even get me started on the sample vocal tracks! I actually discarded this part of the pack as it was painfule to listen to. The vocals are horribly off key. Please, save your money. I know it's exciting to find this wonderful musical in a karaoke version but keep looking. Don't waste your cash on this one!!!
i'm 13, and i need help. (by the way, GO WICKED! luv it.).......2007-05-29
Hey ya'll.
i'm giving this 5 stars because i love wicked a lot (and it's not my top 1, but top 3.so i'm not biased) but i really need to know if the karaoke part is worth buying. i don't care about the instructional singers, just the music. i want to perform this, but plz tell me if it's worth the MUCHO money? thnx!
Don't waste your money.......2007-02-01
My daughter needed the karaoke version to perform one of the songs for a show at her school. This version is absolutely horrible. Neither one of us can even stand (or sit)to listen to this cd. What a terrible waste of good hard earned money. Everyone who has purchased this should receive their money back plus 10% and an apology for being subjected to hearing this. Shame on the people who produced this cd and are making money from it.
"well-sung, theatrical vocals..." What cast did they listen to!?.......2007-01-07
I bought this CD from the local Wal-Mart for a hefty sum. I was a little nervous, as I always am when I purchase something without listening to it first, but figured what the hey, it's Wicked, it CAN'T be bad. I really just wanted an alternate take on some of my favorite songs, since I can't afford to go see the musical in person yet.
I was wrong. I was very, very wrong. I realized I wasn't going to be getting the same level of performance as in the OCR release. But, after reading the reviews when I got home, I opened it. I popped it into my CD player, and my ears were immediately assaulted by their Gahlinda's warbling. Yes, Gah-linda. No other name fits so well. It's plain the group assembled to sing was trying, in part, to emulate the original cast's performance, and sadly, they failed miserably. Gah-linda's voice was off pitch and screetchy, frequently. Thinking perhaps I was merely comparing her unfairly to other performers, I played it for a friend, who all but begged me to turn it off. It was plain to us both that she was trying to sing far above her natural range. The other cast members, save their Fiyero, were decent. Their Elphaba was amateur good, and their Nessarose was surprisingly talented for the few moments time she got.
On to the music itself.
I have a reasonably high quality speaker system, yet the background music sounded like a midi file someone had made of the real music. Like something out of an old 16 bit game, or perhaps a talented teen trying to coax music out of an old keyboard. Thinking perhaps it WAS the sound system, I tried it in another media player. Same sound. Realizing that perhaps the guide CD might have simplified music apart from the karaoke CD itself, I swiftly switched to CD2. But wait. There was no CD2, because I had recieved two copies of CD1.
This was the final insult, for me. I contacted Stage-Stars and asked for my money back, explaining the variety of reasons I thought I deserved it. The woman I spoke with was polite and understanding, and, after getting my address, overnighted me a new copy of the title, shrink wrapped. It went immediately back to the store, and I got my money back.
On another note, on hearing the samples given on various sites of the CD2 music, I must conclude that it is the same quality on both CDs. In all honesty, you'd have more fun just setting the money on fire. Don't waste it on this purchase.
I could play it better myself on a kazoo.......2006-12-13
I bought this karaoke cd because I was told it was the only one available for the musical and even though I had heard it was bad I figured it couldn't be all THAT bad. I was wrong. It's so bad that it hurts the ears of anyone with an ear for music and can throw off even the best trained singer - even when watching the cd+g graphics. I don't know what solution to offer instead since it's the only karaoke track that I know of... but you may be better off just going without.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

this was the end for me.......2007-07-09
I followed Kansas right from the inception of their career-- I saw them do the warm up spot for Hawkwind when their first album was released and followed them avidly and saw all their tours up through this album. However, I was horrified when this album came out because they butchered "Song for America" with the most horrible editing job I have ever heard on a record-- they literally chopped out the best part of the song! Then the next year they released the dreadful non-prog MONOLITH, and I was fed up. They never really recovered as far as I can tell (Livgren was too key to the songrwriting of their best progressive material), but when violinist/vocalist Steinhardt rejoined them (alas, only to leave again) they could put on a pretty good nostalgia show. Unless they expand this to a double CD with tons of extras and "Song for America" intact, I'd avoid this and look for some of their radio broadcasts from the 1970s.
my FAVORITE BAND OF ALL TI ME ..... ROCKS .......2007-06-10
KANSAS is BY FAR my FAVORITE ROCK & ROLL BAND ............ with the "dueling" lead vocals of steve walsh & robbie steinhart, the AMAZING violin work of robbie steinhart, the spectacular drumming of phil ehart,
the awesome guitars of both kerry livgren & rich williams, & the bass of dave hope...... unfortunately, altho i've seen KANSAS 9 times in concert, i was never "BLESSED" to see "the original line-up". This is where "two for the show" TRULY FILLS THE VOID.....
SPECTACULAR !! SPLENDID !! SUPERB !!
From the first album "Kansas" to "Point of know return"........... only (SOME OF) THE BEST from Kansas............
Definitely worth owning, for any TRUE KANSAS FAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best Live offering from Kansas heard yet!!.......2007-03-09
This is a very good live album from the band Kansas right after their rise to fame with the Point of Know Return album. It showcases Steve Walsh's exquisite vocals, Kerry Livgren's wonderful arrangements and Robby Steinhardt's beautiful violin. The only downpoint is that the album doesn't flow because they took songs from different live shows and put them together. The other thing I didn't like about the CD version is that it was missing one song that was on the original album "Closet Chronicles" -- why remove a song on the cd version?? But all in all, this is a very good live album and deserves more praise than I've seen for it - so this is why I am currently reviewing it!! If you want to hear Kansas in their prime this is the album to buy!!
great sounding live album.......2007-02-03
Kansas, from the very begininng, was a live band. They have an energy most bands never achieve. Having said this, i can say this is the best live representation from them i have ever heard. I classify this with many other great live albums like Deep Purple's Made In Japan, or ELP's Welcome Back, My Friends..even Dire Straits' Alchemy. All great shows from when these bands had a few albums under their belts and knew the score. (excuse the pun)
I heard there was to be a remastering of Two For The Show and i hope its true. An expanded 2-CD set with a few bonus tracks would be the best thing they could do to this album. They could add the live version of Cheyenne Anthem that is a bonus track on the Leftoverture remaster and they could put it right after The Wall, and there is a great live version of Sparks Of The Tempest which is on the Point Of Know Return remaster and could be put back in its rightful place after Carry On Wayward Son.
It would also be nice to have the complete show from the Agora Ballroom in 1975. They have released a few songs as bonus tracks: Bringing It Back, Down The Road and Lonely Street. But this is a pipe dream no doubt.
Anyway, this album is great. Paradox is an over looked classic that sounded like it should have been a single. The version of Icarus performed here is a little bit quicker than the studio version and i prefer this one over the album version. Portrait is well done here as well with alot of energy.
Carry On Wayward Son is the weakest performance here and sounds like they played it by numbers just to get it over with. Journey From Mariabronn is another great song that's filled with passionate and precise playing. Dust In The Wind is another weak song that sounds like the band was just sick of playing it. The acoustic guitar solo and piano solo are wonderful additions and provide a great bridge into a great but shortened version of Lonely Wind.
Mysteries And Mayhem is a thrasher that is done flawlessly and which was brilliantly merged into the instrumental mid section of Lamplight Symphony, which is also merged directly into a awesome version of The Wall.
The live Closet Chronicles was deleted from the CD because of time restraints, but can be found on the 1999 remastered version of The Best Of Kansas. This is also a great performance that really needs to be put back on this CD. The ending Magnum Opus is wonderful and played without flaw. I heard they also played Lightning's Hand as some of these shows and that would be yet another great bonus track to add to a remaster of this.
These guys were good and this album proves it. Listen and be taken by it.
Let's not forget the Dedication of the Album by Kansas.......2006-10-25
There is nothing I can add to the others here, I have enjoyed this since its release and this album really pushed me into the one of the higher realms of Kansas fandom. I had the opportunity to see then live in Philadelphia at the Spectrum (I believe it was 1981 but could be wrong on specific year) and they played incredible with energy and the enthusiasm of this album. But, during the show and anytime I play the album, I can not help but get a bit sentimental about the dedication they provided. They dedicated the album to a 16 year old boy - who lived in the Midwest somewhere; I apologize I do not have the album in front of me to quote it exactly. They dedicated it to that boy, because on the way home from the Kansas concert this 16 year old was in a car accident and lost his vision. Since the Kansas concert was this 16 year olds last visual experience, they dedicated the album to him. I cannot say how much of a class act that was by Kansas. This chokes me up a bit occasionally and certainly caught me off guard the first time I read it.

Let the Buyer Beware.......2007-01-12
I do not disagree on any level with the other reviewers of this CD. However, the content is recorded from piano rolls rather than directly from the artist. This fact is not explicitly presented on the web page. Yes, if one clicks on the CD cover photo to get an enlarged image, one can read "First recording 1924 from rare piano rolls" at the bottom in small type. Not everyone will do this however. For this reason alone I only rate this product 3 stars.
Historical and Pristine.......2006-12-22
This compilation of Gershwin selections taken from the piano rolls of the composer offer a perfect introduction to the music of Gershwin, offering a balance between his serious symphonic pieces and his accessible popular songs. Beginning with two of his concert works, "The Rhapsody in Blue" and "An American in Paris," the CD just hints at what the composer accomplished in the concert hall and the world of serious music. To my understanding, the "Rhapsody in Blue" was originally performed at a concert titled 'An Experiment in Modern Music' in 1924 at Aeolian Hall in New York. The piece was performed by an orchestra with Paul Whiteman as director, and with the composer at the piano as part of a concert experiment in jazz. The version on this CD is a piano adaptation created by the composer based off of the original symphonic work.
"An American in Paris" is also a concert work that did not achieve the widespread adoration that the Rhapsody has garnered. It was intended by the composer to capture the emotions of a tourist visiting Paris, and was purportedly auto-biographical. It was performed in 1928 at New York's Carnegie Hall with Walter Damrosch conducting the New York Philharmonic. It received mixed reviews at the time but remains a favorite of Gershwin's classical works. Like the "Rhapsody," the version included here is a piano adaptation of the original orchestral work.
The remaining works on the CD are those of a popular composer, the flipside of Gershwin's career. No other American composer (or any for that matter) has strattled these two different fields of music with the success with which George Gershwin did. And the popular songs, among them, "Embraceable You," "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off," and "Love is Here to Stay" have achieved enormous pop culture penetration and secure Gershwin's place in history as a master of popular song composition. Notably missing from this CD, however, are Ira Gershwin's contributions, i.e. the words, which add an element important to these songs' true place in history. Along with Ira's contributions come the countless Gershwin vocal interpreters who helped to realize these songs' true significance and their dispersion throughout the American popular music idiom.
On these versions, it is simply Gershwin playing his works (albeit the recordings are taken from his piano rolls, not an actual live recording). In these arrangements, the melodies are incorporated into lush and often convoluted harmonic accompaniment, in which the melody often becomes lost (i.e., the bridge or B section of "Oh, Lady Be Good!"). However, the opportunity to hear the composer express the harmonic possibilities of these disguisingly "simple" American tunes is truly a valuable one. The particular bouncing style with which Gershwin jumps from chord to chord to accompany his melodies is clearly apparent on many of these tunes, and that is an aspect borrowed from Ragtime that contributes to Gershwin being labeled as a uniquely "American" styled composer. The idiosyncracy of his composition and playing are tied together and come to life on this CD. The harmonic statements are sophisticated and evasive to the common ear, and the rhythmic precision and prolificity are legendary. Together with the melody, these elements of the musical composition on which Gershwin demonstrates mastery come together to produce a truly quintessential and essential Gershwin compilation.
"Rhapsody In Blue".......2006-07-12
"This piece (Rhapsody In Blue) seemed to sweep through my mind. It was the heart of America, the feverishness of life, the musical welter of races, of peoples, their joys and their passions, their dissipations and their exaltations." ~ George Gershwin (September 26, 1898 - July 11, 1937) ~
Today, July 11, 2006, marks the 69th death anniversary of one of America's most versatile songwriters, George Gershwin. The birth of one of my favorite jazz-infused-classical pieces, "Rhapsody In Blue" in 1924 made Mr. Gershwin an overnight and sensational star and had gained him a worldwide recognition. He had been my late parents' (and mine, too) favorite composer along with Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern and Cole Porter. His harmonious collaboration with his brother, Ira Gershwin, had produced the most beautiful songs of all-time. They were the most prolific team of songwriters and their compositions have been recorded countless times by famous interpreters of Great American Songbook such as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, Tony Bennett, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, Michael Feinstein, Natalie Cole, Linda Ronstadt, Rod Stewart, Steve Tyrell, Diana Krall, John Pizzarelli, Michael Bublé and Chris Botti, among many others.
This CD is a musical treasure and one that I would strongly recommend not only to any Gershwin enthusiast but also to any new fan for this includes the original recording of "Rhapsody In Blue" from rare Piano Rolls. The sound quality is just terrific. It highlights two of his major works - "Rhapsody In Blue" (1924) and "An American In Paris" (1928). It also features some of his well-known popular songs and favorites of mine, my parents' theme songs "Our Love Is Here To Stay" and "Embraceable You." It has been said that Mr. Gershwin functioned best and had written his very best compositions at 3 o'clock in the morning and when he finish eight bars that he likes, he can finish a chorus in a few minutes, like the songs "`S Wonderful" and "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off." This recording also includes "Swanee," "Walkin' The Dog," "Somebody Loves Me," and "Oh, Lady Be Good."
It's so amazing that he composed frequently and never run out of inspirations for writing melodic tunes that are so pleasing to the ears. He can write three to five songs in a single afternoon. When he completed the melody of a song, he gives it to Ira to write words to it. He was such a genius and played the piano by ear after a fashion, tapping out the tunes with a finger.
Not known to many, Mr. Gershwin had tried his hand at painting. I've seen a portrait of himself that he painted a year before his death from brain cancer, and I would say, it's a beautiful work of art, almost like a work of a professional painter. He could have been a great painter.
George Gershwin will always be remembered as one of the greatest 20th Century composers and his music will always linger in the hearts of music lovers like me who truly appreciate and enjoy fine music.

William Bolcom is my kind of musician. He writes music that is sometimes adventurous but always based in a recognizable American idiom. And he's a terrific ragtime pianist, the best Joplin player I've heard. With these credentials, of course he's a wonderful Gershwin player. These are the best piano performances of Gershwin I know. After you hear those, Bolcom joins his wife Joan Morris for very flavorful versions of 10 George and Ira Gershwin songs. The whole disc is a delight, and the original analog recordings still sound fine. Highly recommended to all Gershwin lovers. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Peculiar.......2005-01-26
I can see how someone might enjoy this album. William Bolcom is a top-flight pianist and the idea of playing the tunes as George Gershwin played them at parties is intriguing.
Because my ear is used to it, I guess, I would like to have heard longer performances of fewer songs. Each one sounded to me like a snippet -- over too soon. Because of that, plus the fact that I'm not a fan of Joan Morris' showy voice, I give the album one thumb up.
Gershwin Never Sounded Better!.......2002-06-25
This is a fantastic CD! Back in the 70's, pianist William Bolcom and his singer wife Joan Morris made a delightful series of albums on the Nonesuch label of old songs from the first half of the twentieth century - just glorious voice backed by brilliant piano. As Ira Gershwin might say - who could ask for anything more? The music is not only beautifully performed, you can hear the joy of the performance in every note. And Bolcom and Morris were never better than when doing Gershwin.
A combination of two albums, the first part of this CD is all piano. The Gershwin Songbook consists of brief (some under a minute) versions of some of his more popular songs in the way that Gershwin himself famously played them at parties. They demonstrate that Gershwin was as gifted a pianist as he was a composer. The other instrumental tracks are some of Gershwin's solo piano pieces, including the wonderful Rialto Ripples, a rag written when he was just seventeen. For me, the pinnacle of both Gershwin's and William Bolcom's artistry is reached on the second of the three preludes - a classic study of a bluesy mood.
Just when you think things can't get any better, Joan Morris arrives. She effortlessly sings and swings her way through ten of Gershwin's best songs from the cheeky comedy of By Strauss to the smoky moodiness of Someone To Watch Over Me. Maybe I'm just an incurable old romantic, but the ballads are the best of all.
No Gershwin collection can be complete without this CD. Now if only I could find a copy of that Bolcom/Morris song about Humphrey Bogart...

Nostalgia Trip.......2005-09-24
Helps you remember these great and atmospheric movies. Only Nino Rota writes better movie music.
Sweet and Sublime.......1999-06-13
"La valse de Francois T" makes my heart want to burst. Never has sweet melancholia been so sweetly and lyrically expressed. This entire album is a godsend, but "La valse" - it is something else, far beyond my power to convey.
The aural equivalent of Truffaut's films: humane, touching........1998-10-03
Hitchcock had Bernard Herrmann, and Spielberg has John Williams, and Francois Truffaut had Georges Delerue. "Jules and Jim" jauntily evokes the delicious problems of one woman in love with two men. With "Shoot the Piano Player" you can almost see Charles Aznavour in his seedy Paris cafe. And most gloriously, for Truffaut's Oscar winner as Best Foreign Film, "Day for Night," Delerue composes a chorale that celebrates the endlessly repetitious, endlessly varied rituals of filmmaking. A wonderful collection of themes from nine films (plus "La valse de Francois T."), performed by the London Sinfonietta under the direction of Hugh Wolff.

Album Description
The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps is the only musical unit of its kind in the United States military. Because it is charged to represent the musical history of the Army, the Corps extensively researches all of its music, and much of what it performs is arranged from original sources dating as far back as the 17th century. The Corps uses arranging techniques and styles of the 18th century to promote the maost authentic performance possible. The uniforms worn by the Corps are designed from regulations of the Continental Army and represent what fifers, drummers and buglers would have worn during the 18th century. The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps is a special ceremonial unit in The Old Guard, the ceremonial escort to the President. In addition to ceremonies, the Corps performs traditional fife and drum music throughout the National Capital Region, including performances for visiting heads of state at the White House.
