Hail Grand Magus!.......2007-01-10

This album makes me think Grand Magus are actually warrior Vikings on a mission to takeover the metal world. The back cover art shows bloody hands with warrior type armour, grasping through the rain. And the track titles - "Kingslayer", "Wolf's Return" and a host of Scandinavian sounding tracks - boosts such vibes.

"Wolf's Return" is the bands third album, following two excellent outings into classic bluesy doom/stoner metal. With this album the band seem to be going into a more classic metal direction, wearing influences such as Judas Priest, Maiden and Sabbath on their sleeves. And this really isn't a bad thing, songs such as the opener with its galloping march and the title track with JB's almost operatic chorus delivery, which is again reflected by "Repay In Kind" with its `old school' sounding chorus. The band also delve back into their roots with the chilling doom mastery of "Nine" which has a really killer lead riff, and the closing "Ashes".

Add some tasty Norwegian atmospherics to the overall mix and you have one excellent Scandy metal CD. My only complaint being the length, it is simply too short to be a 5 star album.

overlooked gem.......2006-08-10

This is doom-flavored straight heavy metal that sounds a lot like classic Danzig, only more "metal" and with a much deeper, heavier bottom end. Gorgeous sinister riffs, amazing vocals (and not the normal high pitched wailing of metal, but real singing), and quite good vocal melodies.

The whole thing is super, but the first half of this disc is really amazing, culminating in "Blood Oath", which is a summary of what makes this band so good. I don't know how to describe it. Smouldering, smoking, muscular, intimidating heavy metal grooves interwoven with sophisticated, wolfish, Nordic lyrics and vocals.

This really couldn't get much better. It's the same old sad story, great bands get overlooked while generic junk dominates the public attention...

Dark Magician Wizard.......2006-07-31

Like several other Miles albums from this period this was a Japanese only import. Some of the others were the best versions of the live sets. Like Black Beauty was from the Live at the Filmore sets, but arguably the better sets. Agarta and Pangea same thing. There are rumors that Miles was pissed at American audiences. The Japanese were bigger fans.

Dark Magus wasn't even released in the US. I think Miles thought this was his best one. So he was going to really punish the Americans by not releaseing it here period.

I happened to get a Japanese copy from a friend. Ultra beautiful ultra modernistic cover. Really beautiful. Very heavy dark rock music sometimes very slow. Three guitar players heavy on the feedback. Miles loved Hendrix and was working with him when he died.

Really a unique Miles album. If you are still stuck on his "cool" period forget it. You'll hate this. However if you are interested in his period of namelessness that can never be named then you might try it.

Ha ha. Some of you know what I mean.

GRAND MAGUS Monument.......2005-04-28

On 'Monument', the sophomore full-length from Grand Magus, we see this Swedish doom-metal trio truly finding its way. Having explored the more rocking end of the doom genre on their self-titled debut, this recording takes a far heavier and grumpier turn with more of a sludge-doom approach. That's actually an understatement, this is possibly the heaviest slab of doom I've heard in ten years. Forget Electric Wizard. Yes I really just said that, forget Electric Wizard, because this album makes 'Come My Fanatics' sound like The Wallflowers. This is full-on creeping, crushing doom like you've never heard. A monstrous guitar sound, massive riffs, skullrattling rhythms, and JB's roaringly powerful but melodic and soulful voice all amalgamate into one indescribably heavy creation. The arrangements are superb, when they aren't harnessing the pure energy of slow-motion doomy groove such as on 'Summer Solstice', they are churning out huge song structures which build into enormous God-like crescendos. Check out a song like 'He Who Seeks, Shall Find' and you'll know what I mean. And the riffs, by The Gods, THE RIFFS! This band has found the sanctity of the almighty riff and made it holy again. These riffs sound like they could be the b*stard love-child of Black Sabbath and Solitude Aeturnus, and if that means nothing to you then you've got some heavy-metal homework to do. And let's not forget the conceptual content, when it comes to the lyrics this also qualifies as Viking metal which is nothing short of a breath of fresh air. Songs like 'Valfadher(Chooser of the Slain)', and 'Ulvastalt(Vargr)' exude far more Nordic ambience than you'll hear in ten strait hours of Norwegian black metal. Lines such as "You can betray me, the pain won't break me. Here I stand I'll never fall. WarGlad will take me, no mourning on my dying day. Let me burn and enter the Hall" would send shirvers down the spine of a 10th century Norse skald. These dudes have read up on their native mythology, that's for sure. The crisp, thick production on this record is perfect for bringing out the bone-crushing quality evoked by such weighty music. Trust me, crank this baby and watch the paint peel off the walls. Yup, it's THAT heavy. But don't take my word for it, hear this record and believe. If you're a fan of quality doom, you simply cannot afford to pass this record up. The BEST doom I've heard in many long years. GODLY!

What I would like to know is why almost every band from Sweden/Norway/etc have to be so good. Is there something in the swedish water that we americans don't have? Slow and Heavy, you will gain 5 pounds and this cd will leave you dumbfounded. While there are only 7 tracks on this cd, they are all remarkable and of good length as well. Since amazon doen't have any tracks to sample as of right now, I suggest that this cd be #1 on your purchase list.

Have you ever heard these guys?.......2006-09-24

I hadn't, until they came up on the recommendations list, but after reviewing the album art (huge beards can never be bad) and the samples, I had to listen to this. I'm not disappointed.

The noise these guys seem to be shooting for is one of a largely "stoner rock" kind of bass-driven and somewhat melodic underpinning largely riff-driven rock. Nothing special, you might think, but it is the guitar/vocalist that makes this CD exceptional. There are enough "air guitar" moments to satisfy any cravings you might have, and the riffs are also catchy enough to maintain ones interest. That Grand Magus aren't bigger is a huge surprise.

One other thing that people seem to comment on that I agree with are their thoughts on the vocalists voice - he really does sing. Not growling, or howling; but singing. And it works! It really does. I've not as yet got any other CD's by this group, but rest assured I will. Go on, give it a listen. You'll not regret it.
