Customer Reviews:
Christmas Carols at there best.......2005-10-18
It does not get any better. This 2 cd set is outstanding.
As one reviewer notes the second disk has many carols not heard by most people in the USA. I heard them growing up, but most are hard to find on an album.
Christmas is not Christmas without King's College Choir singing carols.
A great collection... :)
Nice Christmas CD.......2004-01-10
In my haste for looking for some traditional and exuberant Christmas music, and in my blinding affinity for all things "King's", I purchased this cd. It is a nice compelation, although I, and I daresay many Americans, am not very familiar at all with most of the hymns/carols on the 2nd cd. Morever, I found most of the music lacking in pomp and circumstance. Of course, now, I understand that is not what this cd set is for. If you want big sound and more familiar tunes, try something else.
The Best Christmas CD Ever.......1999-12-19
If you are seeking a CD of traditional Christmas music to help you 1) focus on the true meaning of the holiday and 2)draw near to God, this is it. The choral arrangements are alternately beautiful and powerful, delicate and majestic. There is a rich heritage of European carols which 99% of Americans know nothing of. Broaden your horizons with this disc. You won't regret it.
A masterpiece........1999-01-04
David Willcocks has produced, without question, the most elegant and dignified collection of Christmas choral music available. This CD is a masterpiece.
You need one traditional Xmas cd - this is it........1998-11-30
Yes, most of the stuff was originally recorded in the 50's and 60's and it's not going to win prizes for signal to noise ratio. However, if you, like me break out in a sweat hunting for a xmas cd which won't contain some desperate wannabe modernised rehash of carols or a "listen to me aren't I a good tenor/diva and by the way here are some carols?" tracks, then this is your album.
From the moment track one started, with a belting rendition of "Hark the Herald Angels", I had a grin on my face from ear to ear. Warm memories of xmases past flood back, cooking, carols, snow and presents. Yes - dreamily rose-colored, revisionist and traditional it is, but worth every penny in this cynical cyber world.

Customer Reviews:
Beginning a Survey at the End: Less Familiar British Works for Strings.......2006-07-20
The very fine concept and well-executed 'English String Miniatures' adds great depth to the appreciation of that particular British sound dealing with string orchestras. This Volume Four is most appealing because it offers works unfamiliar to most of us. David Lloyd-Jones conducts the fine Northern Sinfonia in performances that are assured, finely detailed and capture that special mood that suffuses each of these charming works.
One surprise to this listener was the work of Peter Hope whose 'Momentum Suite' opens this concert. The work incorporates tunes and dance melodies in the first two movements and rollicks in the third movement to an ever increasing rapid tarantella-like spin. Frank Bridge, one of the hallowed greats of English composers, is well represented with his 'Valse-Intermezzo' and 'Scherzo Phantastick' (sic), the latter in an arrangement from his string quartet in E minor.
Other less well-known but very fine composers - Adam Carse ('Sketches'), Ernest Tomlinson ('Graceful Dance') and Paul Lewis ('English Suite') provide diversions in the midportion of the recording and the final works include Holst's 'A Moorside Suite' and Delius' beautiful 'Aquarelles' (from his 'songs to be sung on a summer night').
David Lloyd-Jones has a particular affinity for this music and he draws lush string playing from the Northern Sinfonia. It makes an interesting diversion to begin listening to this four-volume set of English String Miniatures with Volume Four and creates a commitment to buy the other three volumes! Grady Harp, July 06
Charming music for strings.......2004-02-27
I picked up this recording on the strength of the first three volumes of the series even though this installment had few titles with which I was familiar. From the opening dance of Peter Hope's Momentum Suite I had a feeling I would not be disappointed. And I wasn't the rest of Hope's suite is as wonderful as it's opener with an Intermezzo that is beautiful and the playful third movement Momentum.
Next up two pieces, from composer Frank Bridge, both of which were new to me in this new string arrangements by Paul Hindmarsh. Fine examples of why Bridge is one of the last GREAT British composers, I'm accustomed to hearing them in their original string quartet formats, but Hindmarsh's effective treatments retain the feel of the original works.
Other famous composers represented on the disk are Holst with his Moorside Suite, written, as were most of his works for string orchestra, for the junior orchestra at St. Paul's Girls School. This work which seems so at home played by a string orchestra was originally composed for brass band... I just can't imagine, especially the gentle and flowing Nocturne movement.
Two other highlights are wonderful performances of Delius' Two Aquarelles, both arranged for string orchestra by Eric Fenby four years after the composer's death. The Lento has more than a touch of melancholy to it that is sure to put a lump in your throat.
Paul Lewis was unknown to me but his English Suite made me an immediate fan. Probably the most recent composition from the four volumes in the English String Miniatures series, composed in 1993, it sounds like both homage and pastiche at the same time. "Neo-pastoral", then? Yet still, the Meditation movement is just another example of how well the British write for string orchestra.
Pick this one up (and if you don't have volumes 1 -3, you'll need them as well).

Album Description
Founded in 1971 by video artists Woody and Steina Vasulka, The Kitchen is internationally known as a leading center for video, music, dance, performance, new media and literature. The first institution to focus exclusively on cutting-edge, multidisciplinary works, it has been a powerful force in shaping the cultural landscape of this country. Over the last thirty years The Kitchen has documented every one of its performances with video and/or audiotape. However, in recent years much of this documentation, primarily recorded on what are now obsolete formats, began deteriorating. In 1999, under the leadership of Executive Director Elise Bernhardt, and with the dedication of The Kitchen9s Board of Directors and the help of numerous donors, The Kitchen began an initiative to catalog and re-master its extensive collection of 3600 videotapes. In the fall of 2001, an additional trove of audio recordings from the 1970s was discovered. While these tapes promised rare and exciting music by such artists as John Cage, Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, and David Tudor (in the first box alone!), none of this material could be accessed without proper cleaning and re-formatting and the funds and facilities to do so. A recent collaborative partnership with The Looking Glass Studios and Philip Glass9 label, Orange Mountain Music, has allowed for the restoration of a number of audio reels. This work has been done with the goal of producing a series of CDs, From The Kitchen Archives, with New Music, New York 1979 as the first release. This 2-disc set offers re-mastered recordings from the landmark New Music, New York: A Festival of Composers and their Music, held at the Kitchen9s 484 Broome Street space in SoHo from June 8-16, 1979. The festival, which set a standard for new and contemporary music, paved the way for New Music America, the annual event that emerged the following year in Minneapolis and ran in various cities until 1990. Now 25 years later, these recordings are an invaluable time-capsule, a privileged view/listen into a historic event, initially heard by only a few hundred people. Beyond their historic value they offer brilliant and exciting music by composers now considered masters of the genre, as well as remarkable performances by figures nearly forgotten. While many recordings from the festival could be restored, several gaps remain: concerts that were either not recorded or whose tapes vanished into the ether of the last 25 years. That said, we feel extremely fortunate to be able to release New Music, New York 1979 as our first CD in a series that promises to make available more lost treasures from The Kitchen Archives, uncovering the origins of new music today.

Album Description
British singer-songwriter David Lewis's 1996, the acoustically oriented NO STRAIGT LINES, was awarded a four-star rating by the All Music Guide, a handful of perceptive and positive reviews, and a quick trip to the cutout bins when his American record label went out of business the following year. Undeterred, Lewis and longtime friend, co-producer and occasional songwriting collaborator, the witty and insightful solo artist John Wesley Harding, worked sporadically over the next five years on FOR NOW. Lewis's sophomore CD alternates a restrained folk approach and more fleshed-out full-band backing on its ten songs, including three Harding co-writes and a cover of the late British songwriter Nick Drake's "Northern Sky."
"We didn't want to make the same album all over again," explains Lewis, "so we thought it would be interesting to work on some band arrangements." Enlisting such Harding associates as alt.country/roots singer-songwriter-guitarist Chuck Prophet (formerly with the band Green On Red), seminal Lewis influence Al Stewart (second vocals on "You Don't Know"), co-producer/musician/power pop maven Chris von Sneidern, and multi-instrumentalist Robert Lloyd, Lewis has succeeded in creating a unified collection of songs that reflects his talent and inspirations. Among the CD's highlights are the rollicking "Rain Stops Everything" (powered by David's gutsy harmonica), the sensuous, mysterious "Ramadan Moon," which features Richard Thompsonesque guitar from Prophet, and the valedictory "Weary Traveller," with regret-filled solos by Prophet and accordionist Lloyd. Enticed by an excellent bottle of wine, Al Stewart, one of David's heroes, joined him in the studio to sing on "You Don't Know ! Me."
Although Lewis's globetrotting experiences inspire some of his material, the various aspects of love - accepted, imploded, frustrated, postponed, denied - dominate the majority of the songs, including "Almost a Stranger," "Your Kind of Madness," "Let the Sunlight Dry Your Tears" and "Too Much Love." The contrast between Lewis's boyish voice and the depth of experience in his lyrics sets up an engaging invitation for listeners to get lost in his music.

It's not as popular as the Second Symphony or the Second and Third Piano Concertos, but real Rachmaninoff fans widely regard The Bells as his greatest work. So did Rachmaninoff himself. Three factors have prevented it from receiving the popular acclaim that it deserves. First, it sets a Russian version of Edgar Allan Poe's famous poems (though it's often done in English translation); second, it requires a huge orchestra, including piano, organ, soloists and chorus, and is thus quite expensive to perform. Finally (and this is the kiss of death), it ends quietly. Most conductors like to conclude a concert with a bang, and beginning the program with a work of this size and complexity would be out of the question. So your best chance to hear it is on disc, in a great performance like this one. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful CD.......2006-09-24
This is beautiful and makes you wonder why it is no longer available except as used disks.
Jarvi's almost mystical reading.......2002-06-18
Rachmaninov's wonderful setting of Edgar Allan Poe's poem "The Bells" certainly does not get enough attention. Jarvi and the Scottish National Orchestra make this abundantly clear in this atmospheric, almost mystical recording of it. When in top form (and he certainly is in top form here) Jarvi is a master of the Russian romantic idiom. He imparts a passion to these proceedings which has rarely been matched. It is almost a sin to compare this excellent recording with others. The only one in the same league would be Dutoit's with Philadelphia. Yet for all of the Dutoit's icy beauty, there is something to be said for the warmth and space brought by Jarvi and his team. The Tchaikovsky Festival Coronation March makes an ideal counterpoint to The Bells. All in all, a great program. Highly recommended.
