About the Artist
Riley Baugus began playing in 1976 at age 10. Met fiddler Kirk Sutphin around the same time and they began learning and playing Old-Time music together. Later they started visiting Famous North Carolina Fiddler, Tommy Jarrell. There Riley honed his craft as a banjo player, singer, guitarist and fiddler. Riley has traveled and taught throughout the US and Europe. In 1997 and 98, he toured Germany and France with The Farmer's Daughters, a Grayson County, VA based band and in 2000 he toured Ireland with Dirk Powell and Tim O'Brien, and England with The Konnarock Critters. Riley will tour England and Wales with dancer, Ira Bernstein in Fall 2000.

2 CD set.......2005-05-11
Advertised as 1-CD but mine is a 2-CD set (certain sellers say 2 CD so look carefully) Not a dud in the bunch, wonderful collection from Time Life.
Good Songs, Aimless Collection.......2001-09-18
This volume of the Time-Life CLASSIC COUNTRY collection lacks a thematic cohesiveness that one may expect. It offers two sentimental songs, Eddy Arnold's "Make the World Go Away" and Elvis Presley's "Crying in the Chapel" that seem past their time--these songs would have blended well in earlier volumes, had Time-Life not followed chronology so strictly. George Jones' stately "Walk through This World with Me," Loretta Lynn's "Don't Come Home a'Drinkin' with Lovin' on Your Mind," and Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" represent traditionalists, while Haggard's "Okie from Muskogee," Cash's "Jackson," and Waylon Jennings' "Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line" suggest the driving country to come during the "outlaw" movement of the next decade. Social relevance (Henson Cargill's "Skip a Rope," Jeannie C. Riley's "Harper Valley PTA," and Kenny Rogers' "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town") round out the collection, along with Glen Campbell's "Wichita Lineman," in order to represent the diversity of country music in the late sixties. The sound is pristine, and the disc makes a worthy addition to a country music collection.

breathless.......2006-05-31
The sound from harnoy;s cello is enough to make me cry. she produces such tone and anyone that doesnt agree is uneducated. what can i say elanor rigby the phrassing outstanding ofra has been and still is one of my favorite cellist.
Beatles Like I've Never Heard Before.......2005-02-10
I borrowed this CD from the library out of curiosity and what a delightful suprise. The interpretation of Beatles music is wonderfully simple - I especially love the different variations done with the same tune in some of the pieces giving them a fresh sound. Harmonies between cello and violin in "Norwegian Wood", "Across the Universe" and "Girl" are mesmerising. Mostly played with a slow tempo, this is great soothing music after a stressful day. This CD is definitely worth purchasing for a twist in popular Lennon-McCartney compositions.
4 stars for song selection, otherwise 5 stars for interpretation.
Interesting Cover, but Bad CD.......2004-06-05
I can not believe that Ofra is even famous. Her playing is so stiff and lacks phrasing. Her tone quality is horrible. The only reason that she makes recordings is because her father is rich and he bought her a several million dollar cello and paid symphony orchestras to let her play solos with them. But, it is interesting to hear a cellist play the Beatles. Only buy this CD if you have boughten every cd on this webstite and have a little money left over.
Beautiful and Relaxing.......2004-05-21
The Beatles and Ofra Harnoy! The best of both worlds! What more could you ask for? A friend gave me this CD, and I have enjoyed listening to this right before bedtime every night. Ms. Harnoy, I applaud you for making some of the finest renditions of my favorite Beatles tunes. If you're a semi-professional classical musician like me and you don't have this in your CD collection, you're missing out--Big Time!!! 5 + stars for a wonderful CD!!!!
Lovely and powerful.......2002-01-01
Before you write this off as another attempt to "muzak" the Beatles, listen to Harnoy's lovely playing on "She's Leaving Home," "Across The Universe" and "Girl" and see if you still feel that way once you've heard them. A great set of interpretations by a most evocative cellist.

Great Band!.......2007-06-30
This CD ROCKS! I have also met the band members before they got a record label, and they are really cool. I honestly like some of their older stuff the best: Killing Me, Changes, and Simple deffinetly need to be put on a CD. I have listened to those songs over hundred times and still am not tired of them.
This record really grew on me - it's worth the $$!.......2006-09-10
I heard their first single, "When We Were Young" one night on KTBZ radio in Houston, and so I wanted to check out more of the full CD. I listened to the song samples, and though is was worth the $12 bucks. I got it home, and it really grew on me - I like "When We Were Young", "Somewhere in Between" and "Feel"... My gilrfriend is now into it,and she's digging on "Revealed" and "Collide". She actually wants to use "Collide" in our March 2007 wedding!

Album Description
"The Life of Riley's Brother" is the third album from the modern Celtic folk group Colcannon. The band has been performing together for about a decade, evolving from a beer-mugs-banging-on-tables pub band to the quirky, often introspective performing unit evidenced on this recording. The members of Colcannon draw on diverse backgrounds to present a music that can best be described as New Acoustic Celtic Folk Music. While remaining true to the essence of traditional Irish music- with all acoustic instrumentation, traditional tunes, and songs sung in the Irish language- Colcannon strives to reconcile these elements with the barrage of musical influences that come with being a musician in America today. The result is not a hybrid fusion of styles, but a style of playing and writing that is informed by diversity rather than ruled by it. The music, if you will, of someone who has been around the world and decides they like it just fine at home. Folk music, and the Celtic musical tradition in particular, has always spoken eloquently of the human condition, and the music of Colcannon speaks to modern humans in a way that is both contemporary and timeless. Laughter and longing, despair and hope, frustration and joy... These are the common threads of human experience; the threads that bind us together, that weave through our lives and "The Life of Riley's Brother."

I am humbled to have the privilege of writing the first review of this CD. I don't have enough superlatives in my vocabulary to express how pleasing to the ear, this particular compilation of Gaelic tunes is . . . if you only buy one of Colcannon's CDs, buy this one. You will not be disappointed.

Album Description
Keys of Life represents the finest of contemporary piano music. This release offers an excellent sampler of the music of Celestial Harmonies' most celebrated artists. According to Stephen Hill and Anna Turner from Music From the Hearts of Space, "Keys of Life is an elegant collection of solo piano music selected with great care and understanding from the last five years of Celestial Harmonies releases". Without any intellectual pretensions toward doing so, Keys of Life documents the twentieth century European post-Romantic attempt at the direct stimulation of consciousness (rather than emotion) through music. From Cecil Lytle's sensitive performance of six miniatures by Russian mystic composer Alexander Skryabin, through the enormously dignified pan-Eurasian temple music of G.I. Gurdjieff and his pupil Thomas de Hartmann, to the latest just intonation piano experiments of Terry Riley, we hear a living artistic tradition unfolding through time. Florian Fricke's spacious and beautiful Spirit of Peace, Hans Otte's hypnotic, delicate music from The Book of Sounds, and the rippling, minimalistic patterns of Peter Michael Hamel's Transpersonal complete the collection. For those who appreciate clarity, intelligence, and the unique aesthetic world of refined subtlety, Keys of Life will completely satisfy.
Listeners will enjoy this beautiful combination of styles and artists that celebrates music as the key to life.
Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly consistent.......2007-06-21
I purchased this CD simply because it was cheap, it had a piece by Hans Otte played by Hans Otte and I was unaware of the other composers. I have since purchased music by Peter Michael Hamel and, no doubt, will investigate the other composers. Each time I play the CD I am amazed. It is moody, dark but strikingly beautiful. Any CD with a piece from the sublime Book of Sounds is aspiring to great heights and the other pieces on this particular compilation do not leave that Hans Otte masterpiece alone in the dark.
