Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

A Review of Classical Guitar- Terry Muska.......2000-04-15
One of my favorite instruments to listen to is the classical guitar. I currently have all of Terry Muska's CDs in my collection. These CDs are relaxing and inspiring and I often listen to them when I am drawing or webdesigning.
Beautiful work, Terry!

Customer Reviews:
Great Music, Poor Sound.......2007-02-14
The choice of pieces is exceptional but the sound quality of the recording is pretty awful. It sounds like the microphone was covered with a thick blanket. The guitar Russell plays is a Dammann but the quality of recording is so poor it might as well be a cigar box. Shame, and you know what, it's just as bad on the other CD I have of his: "Baroque Guitar." I like your playing and taste but David, please get a better engineer.
Something for everyone here........2007-01-31
This is a great CD. What really blows my mind is the quality of musicianship found here... it was my first introduction to David Russell, and he has come to be recognized as one of the modern guitar greats (thank goodness - had it been just another guy I'd have been forced to burn my guitars!)
There are certain tunes on here that I don't particularly care for, but there are others that you just don't hear performed on classical guitar very often, if ever. I tend to prefer uptempo stuff since I don't feel that classical guitar carries the weight to "fill the space" well enough on slower numbers (just my opinion... some composers can use the empty space for dramatic purposes very well, but I probably judge more harshly than most in this regard: there are only a handful of slow tunes in the entire classical guitar repertoire that I really enjoy). With that said, there are too many slow tunes here for my liking, which is why I give it 4 rather than 5 stars. It's not a huge complaint, otherwise I'd dock it even more, and it's not all slow, either... when Russell uncorks something like "Cherish the Ladies," it really is a thing of beauty, and there are several others that are particularly exciting and fresh compared to the almost entirely romantic or baroque collection we all already have sitting around. Get it: you won't regret it.
Superb Musicianship.......2006-09-21
These are traditional Irish and Celtic tunes, played on the guitar by one of the great guitarists of our generation. Some tunes are familiar, others not, but every note sounds "just right." A very enjoyable listen from the first. Repeated listenings reveal many subtleties in the music. You really can't go wrong with this recording. Highly recommended.
Captivating.......2003-07-25
David Russell is recognised as a master of romantic guitar music, and on this beautiful recording he pays homage to his Celtic roots, with his own arrangements Irish reels, Scottish lullabies, and folk songs.
From the opening track, the blistering Bucks of Oranmore, to the lush title track Message of the Sea, Russells playing is never less than truly captivating, as always with meticulous attention to detail. Every ornament is crisp and consise, and standard classics like The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond sound here as though they were written for the guitar.
Very good, but not excellent.......2002-12-21
Many of the pieces on the CD are terrific, and played in the celtic style. However, there are several pieces that sound as though it is a classical guitarist playing the pieces (that's to be expected - D. Russell is a classical guitarist). Those pieces are the poorest on the CD (e.g. Fantasy on a Scottish Air). Despite that, I'd still recommend it.

Misleading CD.......2005-01-15
Only the first half of this CD is Carlos Montoya on guitar, the other half is Mario Escudero on Guitar (which is why tracks 10-19 sound so much better!)... I'm glad I realized this early on, because enjoying the 2nd half of the CD was giving Montoya too much credit, he's not that good. Only 3 stars because the first half is a 1 and the second half a 5.
Stark and smoky.......2001-08-20
If you like your flamenco in a smoky bar late at night, then this is great. The first half is just solo Carlos Montoya -- complete with buzzing strings, etc. The second half is more varied with some singing and castenets. This is first-layer flamenco - no producer polish added. Not a lot of information about the players or music itself is included.
The untied soul of Spanish Flamenco.......2000-08-06
Carlos Montoya brushes his heart along the strands of his instrument in this 19 track CD. I've listened to it for years and would gladly plunk down another fifteen clams for a new one if I ever lost it. His rifts through Variacones Por Tango set one's heart thumping, and his soulful pining in Cante Minero is enough to woo any corazon (heart). Noche Granadina and Zapateado De Las Campanas tell the true talent of this master as he unleashes his mastery and lets rhythym run wild. If you want pure Flamenco guitar, The Art Of Flamenco is it.

Much Better than Volume # 1 !!!.......2007-02-27
Flamenco Arabe Volume # 2 is a far superior recording session that outshines the 1st Flamenco Arabe in about every way possible... much better recorded & w/much more accomplished flamenco guitarist as well as adding a talented violinist to the mix all contribute to making this a completely satisfying experience of "flamenco arabe" music... i still don't hear much odd meter arabic /indian rhythms being played by flamenco guitarists [5s, 7s, 9s, 11s,etc] & therefore am still wanting to hear a more complete fusion of these neighboring cultures thru the music in future recordings BUT this is a grrreat recording that creates the basic environment of this fusion beauty-fully !!! Even their harshest critics can't accuse Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops of not trying to have fun. On The Latin Album, they tackle a repertoire that includes big-band favorites and compositions from Piazzolla, Perez Prado, and Aaron Copland (in the form of El Salon México). These are mostly dance tunes, filled with crashing percussion, Latin rhythms, and familiar melodies. To their credit, the Boston Pops get this fiesta right about half the time--opening with Alberto Ginastera's "Malambo," they set a furious, rollicking mood that's heavy on the percussion. They shine on Jacob Gade's "Jalousie" (an early hit for Lockhart predecessor Arthur Fiedler) and on the more atmospheric "Mi Cambio" by César Villalobos. Unfortunately, their arrangement of Piazzolla's "Oblivion" is about as subtle as the music found in soap operas (and about as exciting) and "Perfidia" is a disappointment, "smooth" but hardly sultry. Still, the Pops know how to play their brassy, rhythmic showpieces, and the recorded sound here is excellent. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Good background music, but a little tame for latin.......2002-08-19
I expected a little more action. I tend to think of mariachi and I got village pan pipes.
Don't Bother!.......2002-04-15
I bought this CD at a stoop sale for one dollar, and then sold it at a stoop sale for a dollar or two. I am very glad that I did not pay full price (or even half price) for it. I did not think it was a bad CD, but a bland CD. Every track on it I have heard performed better elsewhere. They are like Muzak versions of great Latin works.
A mood-lifter!.......2001-03-29
Keith Lockhart, the Boston Pops, and the guest artists have a hit in this one! I can almost forget the snow outside when I listen to it. I loved "Jalousie!" And Mariachi Cobre stands out on "Granada" and "Son de la Negra." Five star tracks, both of them, with Steve Carrillo's great vocal work on "Granada" and the spirited interchange between the Pops and Mariachi Cobre's brass sections in "Son de la Negra." Purists may object to the combination of Latin music and an orchestra, but I think it's a treat!
A great CD from the Pops.......2001-02-07
The Boston Pops due a great job on this CD. I really like Batuque. If you are looking for a great CD that will really make you dance this is the one.

Album Description
Sam Pacetti grew up in St. Augustine, Florida. At age 13, he saw Chet Atkins on TV and thought, "Yeah, that's the way guitar should be played." So Sam bought a couple of finger-picks and grew his nails. "I was terrible," he admits. Fate intervened shortly afterwards in the person of Gamble Rogers, the legendary picker and raconteur from St. Augustine who took the young Pacetti under his wing. After hearing Pacetti play, Rogers asked the high school student if he'd like to get together and pick a little guitar. Pacetti and Rogers met and played weekly for the next year. Tragically, Rogers died while trying to rescue a tourist caught in a rip current at Flagler Beach, Florida. Pacetti played at Rogers' memorial service and still counts Rogers as his most important influence. Tradition and innovation neatly balance in Sam Pacetti's music, the whole infused by a relentless intelligence. Martin Simpson and Merle Travis are touchstones to Pacetti, and while there are strong elements of the Leo Kottke/John Renbourn school of guitar wizardry throughout his work, there is a powerful raw emotionality evident as well - an earthy sensuality more reminiscent of a Greg Brown or a red-dirt blues master than of a musical academic.
Customer Reviews:
Incredible Guitarist.......2005-10-13
There's not much I can add to the other reviewers because they're all right on target. I first heard "Brian's Rapier" on a sampler CD put out by Waterbug Music, which is organized by Andrew Calhoun (another great musician). When I first heard it, my jaw dropped open in amazement. I couldn't wait to get the full CD and was not disappointed. Check out the Waterbug website to find other great folk musicians. If you like Leo Kottke, you'll be similarly impressed with Sam Pacetti.
Update 7/6: Sam has just released a new CD called "Union" a collaboration with Gabe Valla, who produced his first CD. They make an incredible duo. Unfortunately, it's not available yet on Amazon but check out Andrew Calhoun's website, Waterbug. If you thought this CD was good, wait 'till you hear Union! He's more controlled and it really showcases his real talent as a musican. Leo Kottke, for the most part, never seemed to graduate beyond his manic playing (at least the ones I heard).
absolutely top of the world class.......2004-12-21
I promise you none of the 5 star reviews of Sam Pacetti's "Solitary Travel" are exagerations. In fact most are understated. I caught Sam live at Cafe 11 in St Augustine, Florida as the opening act for the artist I went to see. I had never heard of Sam before that night but the treasure of his music was one of the most fantastic discoveries of my lifetime. Sam is a master guitarist who's every note rings clear as a bell. Some one needs to drag that lad back into the recording studio because there is a legacy in that man's soul that is hugely untapped. The world needs to hear Sam's music.
Outstanding!.......2004-05-05
As a folk and bluegrass DJ in northern Indiana, I am always on the lookout for artists that fall under the radar. Sam Pacetti certainly qualifies. His guitar-work on "Solitary Travel", is exceptional with an Irish flair, and he proves that he has a more than adequate voice to back up his own picking. His high-speed flatpicking instrumental numbers are the best on "Solitary Travel" -- "Brian's Rapier," "Merrily Kissed the Quaker's Wife," and "Triple-Sec" are outstanding, and Pacetti owns up to an obvious influence from Martin Simpson with his version of "Shawnee Town." While it seems he has a local stature in his native Florida, it appears that his following does not necessarily follow him out of the Sunshine State. This is a shame. I would glady list Pacetti in my "Best Folk Musicians Few Have Heard Of" category and would encourage more people to find and peruse his work, so that I may evetually take him OFF of the list.
Sam Pacetti.......2004-03-17
This man is the unsung hero of the guitar world. Sam is one of the most "mindful" musicians I have ever met in my life. Period. You have not lived until you hear his music. He touches the heart and will enlighten your existence. Not just with his herculine technical ability, but with his emotional delivery that is easily and most comfortably felt through this entire work. If you're ever in St. Augustine, FL at the Milltop Tavernon Monday nights... you'll be thankful you witnessed him live. Thanks Sam!
Live at Cafe Eleven.......2003-02-17
I have seen Sam play at Cafe Eleven in St. Augustine Beach and he is AMAZING. Having studied under Gamble Rogers he has taken his God given talent and expanded it to an extrordinary level. While seeming so relaxed, he plays with abandon and it sounds like two or more people are playing. He is a gentle, humble performer who loves to play, and is trying to help others by hosting singer soungwriter nights at the cafe. If you are a guitar player or just a music lover check out Sam and you will not be dissapointed.

Customer Reviews:
Well delivered.......2007-03-13
I am a fan of the Beatles. This sounded like something I would like. The seller did everything well. I was not as enthusiastic about the music as I thought I would be.
