In later periods of Western classical music, Spain tends to take a back seat to other European countries, where musical developments grew strong and asserted increasingly dominant influence. But in the Middle Ages, Spain was one of the major centers of the musical world, where courts thrived with artistic activity and where some of the most important manuscripts were compiled. This recording concentrates on some of the most commonly performed manuscript sources, particularly the Cantigas de Santa Maria, the Codex Calixtinus, and the Codex Las Huelgas. Extensive selections from all of these sources are available on several other recordings, but this one offers its own distinctive arrangements and adopts a vocal style that recalls the music's ethnic origins. It doesn't completely work, and the sound places the performers too close for comfort. --David Vernier

    5 out of 5 stars Cantigas.......2001-04-07

The "Cantigas de Santa Maria" of Dom Alfonso X are one of the if not the most perfect ensemble of early music in the whole world. The medieval Spain Songs can be described, in my poor opinion, as the more exciting compilation of songs from the middle ages. And this cd is really faithfull to this point of view, as it gives us an experience we rarely can reach!
