About the Artist
Storyhill was an acoustic modern folk duo composed of singer-songwriters Chris Cunningham and Johnny Hermanson. They began playing together in junior high, and released their first CD while they were in college in 1991. Over their 6-year professional career, they independently released a total of nine albums, which have sold, to date, roughly 35,000 pieces total. They were known as Chris & Johnny for several years, until they changed their name to Storyhill in 1996. They played roughly 100 shows a year for several years, mostly at colleges and coffeehouses around the Midwest and Pacific Northwest. In June 1997, they played their final concert as a duo, in their hometown of Bozeman, Montana. Intricate and intertwining vocal harmonies and acoustic guitar parts defined the Storyhill sound.

Product Description
Clearing is one of Storyhill / Chris & Johnny's best-selling CDs, and features some fan favorites like "Steady On" and "Somewhere in Between." Their second professionally-recorded studio CD, it provides a thoughtful and introspective complement to its immediate predecessor, 1994's Miles and Means.

5 out of 5 stars Gordon Bok, the voice of "Down East.".......2007-05-12

This is Gordon Bok at his best, though probably any Gordon Bok is his best. Bok's guitar and and vocals, alone are pure beauty, a joy to the ear. Add to this the fact that his songs reflect his intimate knowledge of "Down East" (Maine coast) water-men. Whether he's singing of a schooner warping into the dock, Frankie, a local fisherman struggling to free his trawl from rocks on the Sheepscot one snowy winter day, or a drunken captain who almost loses his boat and crew off Cape Ann, his music and his boats and the sea are real and true. True and real yes, but always with a bit of magic to soften the edges. The magic of gulls wheeling and dipping in the morning sun, Peter Kagan's struggle against an icy wind that alternately backs and veers around the compass until he lies freezing in the bottom of his dory, - - - and is finally rescued by magic, his lovely wife, a Silkie.

4 out of 5 stars A very good CD.......2006-12-18

I bought this CD after hearing "Old Fat Boat" and "McKeon's Coming." I found these weren't the best songs on the CD. "Mrs. Macdonald's Lament," about the death of the fishing industry and how some men refuse to accept it, is thought-provoking. "Frankie On The Sheepscot" makes me want to put on a sweater even in the middle of summer since the image of fishermen working in a blowing Maine snowstorm is so vivid. Bok's singing of "Western Boat" while not as good as Stan Rogers' version (called "Cape St. Mary" on the CD "For the Family"), is a better than average folksong. The only song that I don't like is "Peter Kagan And The Wind," a telling of the silkie legend. It just goes on and on and on (it's over 15 minutes long).

"North Wind's Clearing" is a CD that I listen to more than most others that I own.

5 out of 5 stars Simply brilliant from beginning to end.......2005-01-07

If I had to recommend one Bok CD, I would not hesitate to choose this one. All of the songs have previously appeared elsewhere, but many of Bok's old albums have not yet been rereleased on compact disc; with the exceptions of 'McKeon's Coming' and 'Old Fat Boat,' none of the songs here are otherwise available on CD as of this writing. And in any case, the thematic unity makes for a more immersive listening experience.

The level of quality here is staggering; amost all of the songs--most of them originals--are classics. Bok's oeuvre does not consist exclusively of nautical songs, but I think they're what he does best. Most of them are very exciting and dramatic, and Bok's acoustic guitar and distinctive baritone brilliantly evoke the savagery and desolate beauty of the ocean. He's also a gifted storyteller, as demonstrated on 'Saben the Woodfitter' and the epic 'Peter Kagan and the Wind' (if you like those--and you will--you should also check out Seal Djiril's Hymn).

I envy you if you have yet to hear this music for the first time. Even if you normally shy away from folk music, I'm almost certain that you will enjoy this, and indeed, that it will become an integral part of the soundtrack of your life.

5 out of 5 stars Great sea songs.......1998-05-12

Bok's rich, deep voice takes you onto the swells of the ocean. On this album he mixes traditional songs ("Western Boat," "I's the B'y") with his own pseudo-traditional tunes (e.g., "Mr. Eneos," "Clear Away in the Morning") and his thoroughly modern folk songs (e.g., "Mister, I Don't Mind," "Old Fat Boat").

In the extreme, he weaves a spell of words and sound in a 15-minute storytelling piece, "Peter Kagan and the Wind." Liam Clancy did a fine cover of this on one of his albums, but Bok's original has a quiet intensity that highlights the nautical tension.

The arrangements are simple, leaving the way clear for Bok's voice to carry the impetus. That's the way I like 'em, when it's a voice like his. I can't imagine the dirge-like "Bay of Fundy" with any better orchestration than the simple guitar.

This is vintage Bok at his best.

Producer (The Insider, The Pelican Brief, Heat) Pieter Van Brugge's first directorial effort is this thriller cum psychological mural about a successful businessman (Robert Redford) suddenly kidnapped by a casual acquaintance (Willem DaFoe). Composer Craig Armstrong wisely underplays the story's cloistered landscape and tension-wracked personal revelations in his synth-orchestra hybrid score. But while many contemporary fusions of the electronic and organic have gotten a bad rap for their often soulless sturm und drang, Armstrong's deft, less-is-more tack -- and a willingness to occasionally blur the boundary between strict musical underscore and mood-enhancing fx track -- effectively creates a mood of brooding, sustained tension. But he also seasons the eerie moodiness of his score/soundscape with stark passages for solo piano that smartly mirror the film's intensely personal human dimensions. Not as hauntingly beautiful as his work on The Quiet American perhaps, but smartly compelling in its own right. --Jerry McCulley

2 out of 5 stars Aside from a few piano solos this is drek!.......2006-09-22

overloaded with soulless synth noise, this score gets it's two stars for the few moody solo piano cues included..One wonders if,in this new century,film-makers now go out of thier way to hire"composers",like Armstong, who define"music"as being a few computer keyboard taps rather than something written for humans with both talent and real instruments,to actually play?I,for one, long for more John Williams, more James Horner,More James Newton-Howard,guys who write REAL MUSIC!I cannot, for the life of me,imagine why ANYONE would want to sit around FOR ALMOST AN HOUR,and listen to an album of"music"which, aside from a few piano solos, consists mainly of BUZZING COMPUTER SOUNDS ,all sounding very much alike....

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars for The Clearing.......2006-01-31

I'm not too familiar with Craig Armstrong. I know what movies he's scored, and I own the occasional track from his music, but I don't own too many albums of his. The Clearing is a darn good movie that opened with little fanfare, as did the score. This score is better than you'd think. True, a lot of it is background music. There are some tracks which could be excluded from this almost hour long album to make it tighter and more attention grabbing. But if you're a fan of electronic suspense scores that are underscored with tragic strings and heartbreaking pianos, then this CD is for you. It doesn't jump out at you, but gradually lets you know of it's presence. Besides, if nothing else, you should get it for the I Have Everything I Need track, which is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

Clearing is guitarist-composer-improviser Fred Frith's first solo guitar recording in over 20 years, and it's a dazzling disc. While its 11 pieces vary considerably, they hang together beautifully. Frith fully exploits the traditional qualities of his instrument but he also expands its sonic reach. Case in point: the lovely "White" recalls the playing of Nick Drake and John McLaughlin, but "Chains" could be the work of a Hollywood sound-effects artist with a particularly sharp ear. The percussive string-tapping on "Minimalism" creates a shower of dancing tones that reverberate with each other and bathe the listener in a wash of all-encompassing sound. Asian music is clearly an influence, both directly and by way of psychedelia, on a number of tracks. Clearing is a thoroughly pleasurable experimental album that will compel listeners to return to it again and again. --Fred Cisterna

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars wondrous imagination from guitar innovator........2004-08-02

Fred Frith has done just about a million things in the music world, although he remains known primarily as a prime experimental guitarist. He released the groundbreaking _Guitar Solos_ back in 1974, and _Clearing_ is the first release since then that presents to us Frith unaccompanied in the spotlight.

As is to be expected, _Clearing_ is outstanding. Like the classic _Guitar Solos_, _Clearing_ explores the tonal boundaries of the guitar and draws sounds from the guitar both ugly and beautiful -- lots of sounds one might not attribute to the guitar were it not for the obvious fact that _Clearing_ is a solo guitar album. "Chains" indeed sounds like numerous chains of various sizes being dragged across a stone floor.

Although the sound is unfamiliar, Frith never fails to merge the avant-garde mind with sublime craftsmanship. He always uses the peculiar sounds of instrument to create imaginative, mesmerizing compositions. At its simplest, there is "Minimalism" -- a repetitive piece of layered, super-fast prestissimos with a truly foreboding, tense atmosphere that true black metal bands should take note. The edgy, Eastern sounding "Theatre" is the longest piece on the album, and it intuitively flows through evocative motifs comprised of complex arrays of interlocking guitar patterns, with a middle section that sounds like industrial dance music gone completely insane and "broken" (all on guitar, mind you). "This Earth Is a Flower" has a title that makes you think it will be a pretty song, but it opens with sharp, rasping noise accompanied by low machine-like grumbling that makes you think of having an acid trip in steel factory. Not pretty, but good. This song follows "Road Movie", which is downright funky in a Frithian way.

It's quite strange, but the opening piece, "White", Frith uses an unembellished guitar, and he crafts a bittersweet, somber atmosphere with unusual chord structures and erratic harmonics. Then there is "Not With Love But With Fear", my favorite piece on the album. It is a complex mix of bizarre melodies forcefully plucked over a backdrop of agitated, squealing arpeggios smeared with feedback. And it ends with some mellow Frith that makes me think of the beach. Also evocative is the appropriately named "Open Ocean", a surreal synaesthesia that uses atonal guitar sonics to evoke a vivid ocean scene. Even though lack tonal centeredness and consisting largely of scratching sounds and alien-bird-like sounds, it is somehow very beautiful, especially on the hair-raising, sporadic showers of acoustic guitar chords.

This is a must for Frith fans, but also worthwhile for fans of avant-garde guitar playing and those seeking a good introduction to Frith's massive catalogue of music.

5 out of 5 stars fred's a genius.......2003-11-15

There is so much atmosphere to be found here, it could fill the space for every planet in the solar system. Frith's guitar sometimes slices, sometimes twangs, but is consistantly incredibly beautiful. I think this is his best album in recent years; his vast soundscapes (created only by his guitar!) will draw you in...please listen.

5 out of 5 stars Astounding player!.......2003-01-24

For those of you that do not know the legacy of Henry Cow, Fred Frith is one of the most inventive, creative and daring with an acoustic or electric guitar beyond anything you could ever imagine. This album is an acoustic triumph for this all-too engrossing virtuoso! Some selections are simplier than others. Fred uses space to its upmost advantage. Then there are also selections of superbly placed natural studio effects intermixing with the natural guitar. If you like avant gaurd or not sure about it, but you appreciate acoustic playing, this record is a must! Awesome spin!!!

This is a wonderful album. It would be an excellent introduction into avantgarde music for those who generally find the genre too shrill, disturbing or disjointed. Every song here, though devoid of traditional harmony, hangs together and sounds beautiful. If you are a guitar player yourself, you will recognize many of the sounds as those which are often incidental to your playing - a scrape on the strings, an accidental hammer-on, an overtone - used to create amazing soundscapes. Good stuff.

Taking chances and mixing innovation with tradition, the Sinch boys have been dubbed the "brothers of invention" by Philadelphia Weekly, and continue to evolve their intriguing live show with every performance. With "Clearing The Channel", recorded with maverick producer Drew Mazurek (Dog Fashion Disco, Linkin Park), Sinch's future looks brighter than ever.

5 out of 5 stars Sinch does it again, even better!.......2006-07-24

Well I can say I'm very satisfied with Sinch's most recent release "Clearing the Channel". The songs on this one seem to have much more emotion in them. From the start you just seem to get the feeling that you are drifting through space or over the ocean in some kind of bluish haze. At first I was skeptical though because it's not a record that sucks you in right away. Just as with their last album it takes a few listens until you actually realize you have an amazing thing in front of you. My favorite tracks on this one are "Silence Broken", "The Power of Suggestion", "Hydroplane", and "What They Mean When They Say".

What's funny is that they are still a great band and again I had to learn about Sinch's newest cd from their website because of lack of radio play. Corporate radio should give the little guy more of a chance to make it rather than crush them with what they think is good or "the popular stuff". Seriously though, most Sinch fans will find something they like on this new one and if you haven't heard of the band you probably should have.

2 out of 5 stars From Innovative And Fresh To Generic In No Time Flat.........2006-03-14

I can't say how dissapointed I am in Sinch's "Clearing The Channel". Seems an obvious attempt to sell out and make radio songs. What some reviewers are calling "mature", I'm calling "cookie cutter" and "generic". Most of the songs sound almost the same with horribly generic (theres that word again) lyrics and vocal presentation. The only reason I am giving this 2 stars is that I think the band did a good job as a whole and "Identity Theft" is a decent tune. But the lead singer (forgot his name) really mailed it in on this record. He used the same vocal approach in almost every song apparently fishing for a radio single.

Sinch's debut was filled with power and innovation. I can honestly say I liked every song on that disc. The album has so much range and emotion, it never gets old. "Clearing The Channel" almost doesn't sound like the same band. Really too bad since I was extremely excited to get the new album to see what new sound they came up with. Well the new sound they came up with was to sound as much like "Default" as they could. No emotion, no imagination, no range and nothing to set them apart.

    Paint me dissapointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Unrivalled.......2006-03-11

Most definately one of the best albums I own.Every song is filled with such power and emotion its hard to believe this is only there 2nd album.I loved the first release & "something more" is probably one of my all-time favourite songs but overall I think this album is better, more rounded, better organized & most importantly, better songs.lyrically & musically this is the closest thing to a modern day masterpiece that your likely to find...

    5 out of 5 stars solid.......2005-12-28

This band is overlooked. Sinch has a great sound. This album sounds more tight than their first, you can tell they've matured. If you are looking for a great rock album this is it.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Genious!.......2005-10-26

The first times that I heard SINCH's Clearing The Channel I got that funny special feeling, like there is something special here, but I really don't know what it is. Now I know that the only aspect that I could use as judgement for art, is whether there is something truly divine about the artist, or not.

What I could easily say is that Silence Broken (the album's first track) was not easily expected as an opening track for the album. It is weird. Explosive, but not in the usual sense. Explosive in an emotional nature, Silence Broken is succesful in bringing the whole album under a different light. After this track, the album just bursts with emotion all over.
My favorite track here is surely Dead Sentinels, I consider it to be one of the best songs I have ever heard. It is hard for me to point out as to which in here are my favorite songs, though, because the whole album is simply amazing. Even the ballads (Sails and Hydroplane) are well thought and perfectly performed.

The album gave me the impression to be divided in two sections, separated by the interlude (Vanishing Act). I see no other use for Vanishing Act but to divide these two phases in the album. I am sure that in such a well thought album as this one, this division has also been well planned and probably plays a part in the whole message the album tries to convey.

SINCH's Clearing the Channel can only be defined as perfect hard rock. This band has evolved in a real direction, achieving much better expression of emotion through mesmerizing vocals, inspiring and devoted guitar riffs, and mature and elegant drum and bass. This is not a surprise, for their last album was also a jewel, but in my opinion, Clearing the Channel is simply more elegant and evolved. A true lesson for those who think that the only direction in which rock can evolve is in the speed at which the bass drum can be kicked... SINCH has proven you wrong with this one and brought rock into a whole new dimension.

      4 out of 5 stars very good!.......2004-02-13

comical, buttersmooth flow, on point, great production, nice tight rhymes, more hits than misses. A good listen and when you know his cell, it makes it that much better...

I really enjoyed this cd and definately recommend it, the production is DEFINATELY a step up from Kutmasta Kurt from that Master of Illusion steez.

      peace,

5 out of 5 stars Real MC. Real DJ. Real good........2002-10-21

Motion Man's style, summed up, cannot be summed up. His rhymes go off-beat, straight-up, humorous, metaphorical, and/or b-boy. I mean this guy is not really a story-teller, but if you want stories, then turn off the CD player, go outside and make some. He's more of the abstract Kool Keith school. At first, many of the songs sound similar... a three or four-note oscillation, measured stanzas, Motion shooting off the top of his head... and therein lies the beauty. The more you listen to this CD, the more the lyrics and Kutmasta Kurt's polished and IMPOSSIBLY musical beats creep inside of your skull, until you find yourself humming them inappropriately to your parents, co-workers, pets, strangers, etc. You also realize how entirely calculated this album is: a near-perfect slice of self-aware underground-style rap for people who enjoy wordplay, bravado and life in general. Even the guest appearances (Biz Markie, E-40, Kool Keith) are few and well-selected. If these guys drop nothing else for the rest of their lives, with this and Masters of Illusion they have already done more than 95% of the acts out there ever will. p.s. - Buy this.

4 out of 5 stars The Amazing Motion Man.......2002-10-20

Motion Man does it again. The tracks are high quality brillant rhymes. If you like trashy radio rap avoid this album but if you like some real [stuff] then this is for you. If you've heard motion man then you should've already ordered this. If you haven't heard motion man then this will get you into him. Exceptionally incredible tracks include Hold Up (feat. Biz Markie), call da national guard, and the hidden track... Enjoy.
Only 4 stars due to lame skit tracks that interrupt the vibe.

      3 out of 5 stars Could've been better!.......2002-09-10

I've waited a long time for this CD to drop, ever since I heard Motion catch wreck on several Kool Keith albums. Now that I've heard the album I must say I'm a bit dissapointed. This dissapointment hasn't got anything to do with Motion, cause he drops some tight lyrics and flows on his first solo-project. It's his producer KutMaster Kurt that somehow slips up. Don't get me wrong he drops some ill beats on this project, actually all the beats are dope and fit Motion's style well. The problem is Kurt's sound gets too repetetive, because all the beats are produced in the same style (with exception of "call the national guard pt.2" and the hidden tack "come hack this", wich I think are the best tracks) and the album starts too get boring with it's large amount of tracks. If you like albums like GangStarr's "Moment of Truth" and Non Phixion's "The Future Is Now" I recommend this one to you, but if you're expecting this album to sound like anything from Kool Keith, don't buy it.

The debut EP from San Diego's Weatherbox is a stunning first step from a band destined for greatness. Gigantic hooks and earth-shattering guitar and drum work burst through a cloud of smoke. The EP serves as a bit of a teaser to the bands debut full length due in 2007 on Doghouse Records.
