The scratchy Dobro riff that kicks off "Why Is the Road So Long" pretty much sums up Eberhardt's stripped-down, passionate, blues-inflected folk music. It's an approach that worked wonders on his critically lauded Red House Records debut, 12 Songs of Good and Evil, and, if anything, it works even better this time out. It's a concept album of sorts, and every song examines the borders that divide and keep people from those they love and the things they desire. It's a vague enough idea and one that allows Eberhardt plenty of space to exercise his impressive songwriting skills. From the easy-groove-driven "Fix Your Blues" to the ominous voodoo blues of "Everybody Knows" (in which he conjures up the ghost of Chicago blues great Otis Rush), Eberhardt covers a fair amount of musical ground. When the journey is over, you'll probably wish the road had been a bit longer. --Percy Keegan

5 out of 5 stars LTJ at its best.......2006-07-28

I've been listening to less than jake for like 6 years now, they've been my favorite band ever since and this is in my opinion is the best record they have ever made, don't get me wrong less than jake has never put out a record i that i could'nt listen to straight through or that wasn't incredible with the exception of "goodbye blue and white" which had about 4 good songs on it and was pretty much a waste of a record. This record was a lot like a rebirth of less than jake into a more rock style of music and not the ska that they had been doing for quite sometime. This record was also the begining of Vinnie's lyrics becoming more personal and more meaningful that ever before. The record features some of the best songs ever written by less than jake, Look What Happened-best song ever written by LTJ adn this version is a 1000 times better than the "anthem(another incredible record)" version, due to the fact that the whole instrumental intro is taken out on anthem when live LTJ still plays this version, ganieseville rock city and last hour of the last day of work are also 2 of the best LTJ songs out there if your really into alternative music buy this record, if you are in need of a cd that will really make your day buy anthem, if your just starting to get into LTJ i'd recommand this record or "hello rockview" and then anthem and in with the out crowd.

5 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2006-02-01

This album contains a lot of my favorite Less Than Jake songs, Gainesville Rock city, Look What Happened, Magnetic North, among others. Overall it has a great sound. The horns are awesome, there is some really cool guitar, and vocals/lyrics are great. This album is most definitely worth the money, it will keep you dancing for years.

5 out of 5 stars LTJ's Best.......2005-12-23

Actually, I'm 16, but I don't want too log in. Anyway, yes this CD is less ska than previous efforts, but I still like it the best. This pop-punk sound works really well for them. Yes, there aren't as many horn parts, but I wouldn't want horns to appear just as filler, only when the song needs them (okay, I do think the awesome guitar leads on Kenhoe and Pete Jackson is Getting Married should have been done with horns, but they are still good). As the reviewer below me said, J.R. admitted that their next album will have only 6 songs out of 12. That isn't quite correct (it's worse-for him). They are recording 15-20 songs for In With the Out Crowd (next album, due March 2006), and only 6 have horn parts, but a couple of them might be cut (12 songs were cut from the Anthem sessions, remember?). But I don't care. It will still kick rear. But I'm getting sidetracked. here is a summary of the tracks (@ indicates ska song, % indictates "hornless" song, to be helpful. (C) indicates Chris-sung song, (R) indicates Roger-sung song).
1. Magnetic North: A Good opener. Gets you pumped for the rest of the album
2. Kenhoe: B+ This song would have gotten an A if the lead was played on sax and trombone.
3. Suburban Myth: A @ Sweetness. Sounds like it would fit perfectly on Losing Streak or Hellow Rockview)
4. Look What Happened: A+++++ This is LTJ's best song (the remake for Anthem did not do it justice at all: the intro is longer (and more touching) here). Lyrics are well written/sung, horns are flawless, and guitars & bass are top-notch
5. Hell Looks a Lot Like L.A.: C- This song never really clicked with me. Don't know why.
6. Mr. Chevy Celebrity: A- % Good song all around. Fast, yet bouncy at the same time.
7. Gainesville Rock City: A+ See the review for Look What Happened, except it is their 5 best song as opposed to THE best (All My Best Friends are Metalheads, National Anthem, & Automatic are the other 3)
8. Malt Liquor Tastes Better When You've Got Problems: A Good song. That's all I can say
9. Bad Scene and a Basement Show: A Creeps me out for some reason. Don't know why. That's why I like it.
10. Is this Thing On? B % Needs horns.
11. Pete Jackson is Getting Married: A % Not a song you'd expect from them but great nonetheless.
12. 1989: A- Houston, we have horns!
13. Last Hour of the Last Day of Work: B- % Okay...
14. Bigger Picture: A % I like it. A lot.
15. Faction: A+ @ Perfect closer. Wouldn't change a thing if I wrote it myself.

Overall: A
This is a great CD. It definitely shows LTJ going in a new direction. The horns and Ska and whoa-whoas are disappearing, but I'm not mad about that, as long as the stuff that they put out is still good. Buy it if you like ska, pop-punk, orboth, you needs this.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best, but still great.......2005-12-08

Okay this has been my first Less Than Jake CD. I bought it about 2 years ago, and since then I've gotten Hello Rockview, Anthem, Losing Streak, and a couple cool live clips off their myspace. This album is in the stage before Less Than Jake decided to be "pop-punk" but tried to blend the two styles. Overall this CD is not their best, but still fun to listen to. Its definately more poppy than Losing Streak and such, but its more ska than Anthem and their new CD is gonna be. (Holy cow, theres only gonna be 6 out of 12 songs with horn parts on that CD according to JR. WHAT THE DEUCE IS THIS?!?!?) My favorite songs are Suburban Myth, Gainesville Rock City, Magnetic North, Bad Scene and a Basement Show, and whatever the last song is. I forgot what its called, but i love it. So don't be turned away by people saying this CD is pop-punk. It has pop-punk bits, but still has LTJ's great lyrics, speed, and the horn section is still there (for the most part) "So strike a match. I hope it lasts. Heres to following your own lead."

2 out of 5 stars WHAT HAPPENED???!?!?!?!?!?!.......2005-04-23

hey guys. this album is kinda boring.... there are only like two ska songs. less than jake is a ska band... what happened? chack out sublime... they are the definition of ska.

Though John Platania's renown is mainly limited to close readers of liner notes, his long association with Van Morrison has found his guitar gracing classics such as "Moondance," "Into the Mystic," and "Domino." His association with songwriter Chip Taylor began in the early 1970s as well, and has sparked this album celebrating Tex-Mex border culture, co-produced and largely co-written by the two. Lucinda Williams sings lead and Alejandro Escovedo provides narration and harmonies on "In Memory of Zapata," with actor Jon Voight (Taylor's brother) offering a capsule history lesson on "Running with the Dogs." Yet Platania's guitar serves as the dominant musical voice throughout, with a command of tone that rarely resorts to show-off licks. Whether he's exploring the cantina side of the border on "Child Heroes" or powering the roadhouse blues in "Texas Sexy Ways," Platania does what he always has--provide the perfect accompaniment to serve the song. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Masterpiece for the 21st Century.......2007-05-28

This album is incredible! I cannot remember the last time that after listening to a cd I immediately played it straight through again... and again.

Platania, as some of you may know, has been the right hand man for two of the most well-respected musicians of the last thirty years, Van Morrison and Chip Taylor, and I am sure that some of his talent was derived from his association with these men. However, I think it may also be said that these two legendary songwriters got as much from John as he did from them. In fact, Van Morrison credits Platania as the co-writer of several of his songs.

This album is exeptionally strong all the way through, and can be thought of as a symphonic composition with a series of movements, much like Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, a master work of musical genius to which it can easily be compared. The only fault I can find with the album is I think the second and third tracks should be the last two songs on it, and that is exactly how I have arranged it on my IPod.

Platania still has his golden gift to work magic with the guitar. Blues, Waltzes & Badland Borders will stand the test of time as a 21st century classic.

4 out of 5 stars enjoy with tequila.......2007-05-16

This veteran master sets an undeniable groove with every style he plays. I first got hooked on the ballad, I Will Be Standing. Then the rest of the tunes just got absorbed through my pores like west Texas dust. Definitely enjoy with your favorite tequila.

3 out of 5 stars Okay but not great.......2007-05-05

I am a big fan of Brian Eno's early abstract work. I like the way he took simple ideas and explored them until they became transformed into something completely different. For example, on "Music for Airports" he recorded women singing single notes, made tape loops of varying lengths from those recordings and let them circulate until many different combinations of notes and silences emerged. The result was beautiful and other-worldly. So, when Eno recorded an album of "soundtrack material" (for non-existant films) it seemed that he had stumbled onto a great outlet for his music. Instead, this is a collection of pieces that sound like floor sweepings from the "Another Green World" sessions. The pieces are short and often sound like passing thoughts that never developed into anything of substance. There are some nice moments on this recording, including some great bass parts and guest appearences by people like Robert Fripp but overall this is one of the weakest of Eno's early recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Eno...........2005-08-01

This isnt really an ambient recording...it was done before "ambient music"...very ethereal pieces...love it. Its a great recording if it doesnt go over your head.

1 out of 5 stars Remastering errors.......2005-07-05

Does anyone have the final word on the degree to which Astralwerks (sic) have screwed up these Eno 'remasters'?

'Another Green World' has the first bars of 'Everything merges with the night' missing, 'Climate Study' is missing from 'More Music For Films, and someone below states that the intro to
'Quartz' on this album is also truncated. Are Astralwerks just a bunch of amateurs or something? Eno must be well pleased with this mess..

2 out of 5 stars Difficult, undeveloped ideas........2005-06-14

A collection of 18 pieces, some intended for specific films, some evidentally not, Eno's "Music For Films" is one of his most difficult ambient records. The music contained within this disc is moody and cinematic, but its also fractured. With most the tracks less than two minutes long, ideas often do not get the chance to develop to their fullness ("Aragon", "Alternative 3").

Having stated that, there is some fanastic material on here ("From the Same Hill" with some great guitar/synth interplay, the Frippertronics piece "Slow Water", edgy and bizarre "Quartz") that makes it worth seeking out for fans of Eno. For the more curious, try "Discreet Music", "Music for Airports", or "No Pussyfooting" (Fripp & Eno) for a better introduction.

2 out of 5 stars Another Mastering Screw-up.......2005-06-02

The music here rates 5 stars, but be warned: the opening sustained note at the beginning of track 10 (Quartz) starts late, cutting off about half of the note. If that's not important to you, order away.

5 out of 5 stars Keiko Matsui is Awesome! .......2005-09-29

This is the first Keiko Matsui cd that I've purchased. She is an incredible artist and so are the other musicians who collaborated on this cd.

4 out of 5 stars A great mix of music.......2000-03-30

This is Keiko's 3rd release. I think it is better than her first two. There are some wonderful songs on it, and anyone wishing to obtain lots of her music should definitely buy this CD. I rate it about in the middle group of all of her CDs. I gave it 4 stars, but would like to give it 4 1/2 stars if available. For those only experimenting with her music, half of the songs on the CD, "The Keiko Matsui Collection" are from "No Borders". So try buying "Collection" to get a sample of the best songs from "Borders".

2 out of 5 stars Keiko Matsui.......2000-02-25

I got this CD for a friend as a gift. She likes it but not too crazy about it. Brain Forst, try Full Moon and the Shrine. It's beautiful.

2 out of 5 stars Overproduced.......2000-01-13

I became an instant Keiko Matsui fan when I saw her perform on a Session at West 54th Street on public television. Soon after, I purchased this CD; after all, four reviewers give it 5 stars. Big mistake. This CD sounds like Kenny G with a better keyboard artist. OK if you like Kenny G. I don't. Can anyone point me to a Keiko Matsui CD that strips away all the reverberating horns and hi-tech percussion noise?

5 out of 5 stars Great sounds.......1999-11-09

I love the track "Kappa" (water elf) it reminds me of some chinese fairy tales movies. Too bad that in Malaysia there's hardly any promotion of her albulms like Kenny G.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique Musician.......2004-06-15

When I first bought this album,I just couldn't get over the sound. It's definetly something out of the ordinary.Jane Siberry is a very talented performer with her own special and unique style.I remember hearing the short version of Mimi On The Beach on the radio a few times back in 1984,and I loved it.Then I recall seeing the video of the full length version of the song on TV.I love the full length version even more. There is not a dull moment on this album.Every song is very entertaining.I even have an aunt who lives near Jane Siberry in Toronto. They're even in the same fitness club. What a small world!

5 out of 5 stars An Ever Changing Artist.......2004-02-10

Having been a Jane fan since 1985 (with the US release of "No Border Here"), this is still one of her best collections. It carries the purity of her early days along with the complexity that Jane retains today. "Map of the World (Part I)" is so ethereal, layered with such gossamer vocals. "I Muse Aloud" is about those moments when being in love expands to being in love with the whole world in an innocent way and the lover is seem through blinders... yet as often occurs when the blinders are removed the relationship ends and the two artists no longer work together. Don't expect any two Jane CD's to have a similar sound, you will be very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Men & Women, listen to..........2003-10-22

"I Muse Aloud," its amazing lyrics, in apparent sincerity and with no irony. I absolutely so appreciate the freedom of the message and attitude here. With her sweet smile all the while, she tells of how she fills her guy up with so much love that he naturaly wants to share it with the other women he's around. Love *is* everything, isn't it, and it doesn't deplete with the sharing, but grows. The video is also very fun. This song sold me on Jane Siberry.

5 out of 5 stars Sonic Poetry.......2002-12-02

The artist's singular vision manifests here in nine varied and textured songs, of which my favorites are Dancing Class with its snatch of conversation (in German and English) in the middle, Follow Me, a fast rousing song with cinematic images, the complex little symphony called Mimi On The Beach, and the atmospheric Map Of The World (Part 1). There's a cinematic quality to the music - the songs are like crafted sonic poems but no less warm and moving for that. Siberry's talent is to communicate with the higher regions of the soul - her best songs all have a spiritual resonance. This may not be considered her best by the fans, but it deserves five stars for the above-mentioned classics. It's my favorite Siberry album, along with When I Was A Boy and The Speckless Sky. Truly timeless music and an uplifting listening experience.

4 out of 5 stars A new voice dazzles.......1998-09-01

In all honesty, I have to admit that I heard "The Speckless Sky" (her 3rd release) before I went back and discovered this release. No Borders has the same attributes of Speckless and is in many ways it's little sister. Still, a stunning peice of at time ethereal new wave. In line with Lene Lovich cum Kate Bush. This is to Jane Siberry's canon, what Cowgirl With a Larait is to kd lang's. From the whimsical lyric-poetry of Waitress to the now trademark heart in your throat simple balladry of You Don't Need..this is the groundwork that all serious Jane fans should experience.

2 out of 5 stars We've Heard This Before..........2007-01-01

What I disapprove most about James Horner is that he borrows from the works of others or reuses his previous scores (Titanic and Deep Impact, anyone?) for inspiration for his newest scores. As for this soundtrack, James Horner completely ripped the title score "Ethiopia, Pt.1" from The Prayer Cycle's "Movement 6: Innocence" which featured the vocals of Salif Keita and Alanis Morissette and was showcased during the opening credits of "The Affair of the Necklace". If you listen to the two, there's almost not a single bit of difference - except that the latter is far better.

As for the soundtrack, its good - I just disapprove of the uncanny resemblance of this piece of work with already previously released works from other artist's.

5 out of 5 stars a THRILL to listen to! .......2005-05-20

This soundtrack is a very moving, blood curdling thing to steep yourself in. It brings to life the drama, aching sadness, anger, and deep love that are all present in the film.

I HIGHLY recommend the film.
The love story is a love story.
The REAL story is the one of the people of Africa, Cambodia, and all the other third worlds. They are the ones we should really be watching the movie for.

5 out of 5 stars Most beautiful and moving...........2005-02-10

...not only is the movie very specil but the soundtrack by James Horner is amazingly beautiful and moving! the title-melody is short but 'pregnant' with emotion!

a tremendously inspiring and great movie with a very fitting and beautiful score!

5 out of 5 stars Above average score from Horner.......2004-06-24

This along with the Missing was Horners best from 2003.
The synths although dated worked really well in establishing the otherworldly feeling and atmosphere. The film of course while having the best intentions just didn't click for me. I certainly didn't feel that the films foreign footage was exploitative, no it gave us a good look at the suffering of those worldwide from famine and war. The best music that James has written has been for films by Martin Campbell, Edward Zwick, and Ron Howard. These are the type of events we should look more forward to. But alas James won't be scoring Cinderella Man, a Ron Howard film, which composer Thomas Newman is attached to. But that probably won't be a bad thing since Thomas Newman is great too.

Non Profit Music (NPM), a privately owned record label, was born with the vision of helping people through humanitarian programs using the music sales of new emerging artists in the New Age and Contemporary Instrumental genres. Non Profit Music started in the Nineties when several indie music portals, such as mp3.com, provided many artists the opportunity of sharing their music while obtaining revenues from their digital downloads. As part of a personal self-commitment to humanitarian causes, one of these artists, Jorge Grundman, donated all proceeds obtained from royalties for music downloads on mp3.com to Doctors Without Borders (DWB) in Spain. After a resounding success on the Internet, Grundman decided in 2002 to create the Non Profit Music record label to officially launch his artistic career by releasing his first album We are the forthcoming past, take care of it. He also donated all profits from the sales of his album to DWB and opened new horizons to artists with similar interests. Non Profit Music artists have had continuous success online since the creation of the label. They have appeared on many mainstream TV shows, on radio and in press interviews in Spain and also internationally in Europe, Japan and, with the help of Only New Age Music, in the USA. NPM has been featured on many panels in Spain (Madrid and Barcelona) to present and explain the NPM philosophy and achievements with the support of the Spanish retail chain FNAC Music Superstores. In 2005, Non Profit Music signed an agreement of collaboration with Doctors Without Borders in Spain, and NPM made a formal donation to DWB. In addition, several humanitarian promotional activities were established including the permission to use the DWB logo on the NPM products packaging and the production of ongoing benefit concerts. Non Profit Music also has created the NPM Foundation, with a broader scope in its aim of music promotion and humanitarian help. Thus, a number of solidarity concerts have taken place with renowned artists such as Ara Malikian; and, in addition, the NPM Chamber Orchestra has been formed. Their album, Tears of Beauty, was launched in 2006, as well as the audiobook Con Los Nueve Sentidos (With the Nine Senses). This compilation, eMotive, is a selection of the most representative works of Non Profit Music artists, including music from already released albums as well as new tracks from upcoming releases.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2004-06-02

This is the best new young group I have heard in years. If they aren't HUGE soon, what a waste of talent that will be. This is like city meets country - love meets lust meets angst - all wrapped up in the some of the most poetic lyrics i have heard. And Daniel Ahearn, the lead poet-singer, is really gorgeous!!

    -Loving them in NYC

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated, like country music in 2035.......2004-04-27

An exquisitely crafted collection of songs. I bought this record the other day after hearing about them on NPR's Weekend Edition and I am just blown away. Lives up to the billing, for sure!

4 out of 5 stars more like short stories than music.......2004-04-26

ill lit's second full-length, i need you., combines the melancholy-drifter sounds of Americana - lonesome acoustic guitars, on-the-verge-of-tears vocals and strong melodies. The lyrics on i need you. provide such detail that they almost seem more like short stories than music. This is an album for anyone who has ever felt lost; ill lit might not help you get found, but it will give you some beautiful songs to light the way. R.I.Y.L.: Will Oldham, Beth Orton, Clem Snide

Cuba Without Borders is a collection of contemporary Cuban music--from both the island and the U.S., specifically the San Francisco Bay area. It showcases the Afro-Cuban musical mainstream and its tributaries into jazz and American popular music. Compiled by Greg Landau and Robert Leaver, two Grammy-nominated producers who turned their famed Latin music store into the critically acclaimed record company Round World Music, the CD rides on the heels of the Buena Vista Social Club and highlights a new crop of Latin musicians. The elder statesman of the group is the legendary conguero Carlos "Patato" Valdes, who shows up on "Lenguaje Del Son" and on club-dub remix "San Francisco Tiene Su Propio Son." His is the melodic drumming style that bewitched musicians from Herbie Mann to Tito Puente. The percussionist and former Havana dockworker Pancho Quinto, a mainstay in Jane Bunnett's Spirits of Havana, teams with Oakland-based keyboardist Omar Sosa and Cuban santero Octavio Rodriguez on the funky rumba "La Gorra." Quito plays a more traditional rumba on "Lenguasa," while Sosa takes center stage on the festive "Marimchacha." Cuba is a nation of musical families, and Los Terrys, a vibrant clan headed by Eladio Terry, shows off its sibling vocal harmony on the velvet charanga "Y Manana Que." "Estos Dias" features saxophonist Yosvany Terry fronting an ensemble of young Turks called Columna B. San Francisco pianist Rebeca Mauleon-Santana's elegant danzon remake of Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight," flutist John Calloway's "Aprovecha Que Me Voy"--which sports a bassline partially lifted from Dizzy Gillespie's "bebop"--and Puerto Rican-Cape Verdean conguero John Santos's take on the Ellington-Juan Tizol standard "Caravan" are other highlights. --Eugene Holley Jr.
