Possibly the single best collection of Shopski music, sung by one of the greats.......2006-08-02
While Snejanka Borissova might be best known today for her eforts in the pop-folk/chalga genre and film music, she was a member of the Philip Koutev ensemble for two decades, from 1982 to 2001, and is a passionate supporter of the Shopsko vocal tradition. This entry in Gega New's "Bulgarian Folk Heritage" series contains twenty-seven songs from the Shopsko region performed by Borissova, accompanied by the Ochestra of the Bulgarioan National Radio Folk Song Ensemble, the Orchestra of the Philip Koutev Ensemble, various independent instrumentalists, and several supporting singers.
Most of these songs appear in sophisticated Communist-era arrangements which are polished enough to take away overall their authenticity as folk material, much like the music on the "Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares" series of recordings. However, the range of unusual traditional vocal techniques on this album is vast. Five songs are diaphonic, where Borissova leads the melody while Kunka Zhelyazkova (with also Sorina Bogomilova on one song) accompanies. The interval between the vocal lines are major or minor seconds, considered dissonant in the Western tonal tradition but an ordinary part of the Shopsko heritage. Quavering and whooping embellish several songs. In rhythm, too, the music here is very exotic, with songs in 11/8 time, 7/8, etc., many linked to xoro, the Balkan folk dances. The material here covers all manner of genres, from epics, to work songs, to seasonal songs,
The CD is not only worth getting for any who like traditional Bulgarian music, but also for those interested in the dialects of Bulgarian. The songs here are a wonderful way to get acquainted with Shopsko dialect, where one finds "e" instead of standard Bulgarian "ya", initial x- is lost, and a whole host of rustic-sounding vocabulary is used.
The CD comes with informative liner notes in both Bulgarian and well-translated English. As a lover of Shopsko, it's dialect, and its music, this CD holds a special place in my collection. If you like Bulgarian music, do try it.
