4 out of 5 stars little-known gem.......2005-10-09

Prairie Oyster is off the radar in the States--which is too bad for the band, and what could be a large fan base here. One listen to this group and you can tell that they would list "Don't Worry" by Marty Robbins as one of their favorite songs. I first heard P.O. because I picked up this cassette from the free bin at my local used record store, which I now consider one of the more profound serendipitous acts of my life. Well written, sung and played, this is a record which will make you want to both hoe-down and cry in your beer.

4 out of 5 stars Old time country album.......2002-02-25

This group is a wonderful blend of different influences that come together in an old time country/rock sound. Each song can motivate you to get up and dance or pickup that old guitar that's been collecting dust in the corner and play along. It's just one of those albums where everything comes together for an enjoyable experience. If you like country and want to dance or just play along, this one has everything you need. Although this is the only album I have of this group, I'll be looking for others and can only hope the next few are as good or Lord help me, even better.

4 out of 5 stars Canadian country.......2001-01-05

Prairie Oyster is a great Canadian country band. They are also great songwriters, having penned 7 of the 10 songs on this album. The group consists of 6 members, Russell deCarle on lead vocals and guitars, Keith Glass on guitars and vocals, Joan Besen on piano and vocals, Denis Delorme on pedal steel and dobro, John P. Allen on fiddle and mandolin, and Bruce Moffet on drums. They have a unique sound, ranging from traditional country to honky tonk, and Russell deCarle's smooth vocals shine.Highly recommended album for country fans. And 12 page booklet features photos of the band as well as all the lyrics.

Easy going bluegrass that does not get stale. You can listen to this stuff over and over, with or without your best cold cerveza.

5 out of 5 stars A ripper if there was ever one!.......2002-12-31

I have searched and searched and been going on searching across the net for this album, and thanks to amazon.com, it's here! "Lucky, Lucky Me" is indeed, a real get-down CD. I love hearing "Another One", "Picture Perfect", "Katie and Rufus" and the title track, especially those electric guitar and bass solos.
But best of all, I love hearing "Lover's Lament" and "Will You Miss Me?" two more of Marcy Morris's compositions. Barry Hembree is an expert on violin, guitar and mandolin, as is Bill Gebitz, a hot guitar virtuoso. But most of all, I love Marcy Morris, who has a really sweet singing voice and plays the most gorgeous double bass you ever saw. Yeah, she's on fire, especially with her bass by her side. Really, you should get this one for yourself. I love it!!

Album Description

With the release of Sometimes…, a primarily acoustic work that crosses over the alternative/country line, Mary Kate has worked hard to step beyond her requested standards. She ties together, both vocally and personally, emotions ranging from loss and love to pride and indifference. With a single voice, each song expresses how we can all be - sometimes.

5 out of 5 stars I'm biased - but this CD is still a fine work.......2001-11-11

As producer of this CD I can't help but be biased, but after hundreds of hours of working with Mary Kate in the studio I still love the CD. Her voice is perfect without the processing that too many contemporary artists rely upon, and the selection highlights her personally.

5 out of 5 stars It's great!.......2001-09-14

If anyone is wondering about buying this CD, you should! It is really great and there are so many good songs. Mary Kate has a pretty voice and the guitar parts are really cool. I'm going to give it to my friends for Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars What a surprise!.......2001-09-13

I ordered this CD off the Internet because I liked the MP3's on the website...and when I got it, I was amazed at how pure her voice is. I was just wonderfully surprised by the entire CD!! I recommend it to anyone. The quality of this singer is as good as any I've heard on a major record label. I hope she gets the breaks because she definitely has the talent!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2006-09-13

I do agree that the name of the CD is really silly, and detracts from the overall quality of the work. The CD would better have been named for Jackson Berkey's composition, Native American Ambiances. It is a beautiful and usual work that is well worth hearing.

4 out of 5 stars What is up with this title?.......2001-09-08

It seems a shame to use such a stupid title for a CD of great music recorded by a great ensemble. 'Tis a pitty to be silly.

5 out of 5 stars It's Definitely One of My Favorite CDs... Make It Yours Too!.......2001-11-30

I first heard the Love Sick Prairie Dogs playing live on a Sunday afternoon, April 2001, on the shores of Sunny Long Beach, CA. They sounded so great live that I bought their CD on the spot. They were nice enough to even autograph it (Thanks!).

The lead singer, Karin Konnoff, has an incredible voice that I never get tired of listening to. Although they bill themselves as a country band, I believe their songs provide enough musical variety to please rock n'roll lovers like myself as well as those who like their music a litte bit slower and softer. In one of their slower songs, Where Are You Tonight?, in addition to having "country-style" lyrics you can't help singing yourself, Karin clearly demonstrates she should be ranked along with other top female vocalists like Faith Hill, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Madonna, etc. The control and range of her voice brings a thoroughly enjoyable depth to each and every song she sings.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the song, Don't Tell Anybody, shows how this band can belt out a good old, fun and fast-paced, foot-stomping country song. It picks me up better than a strong cup of coffee. If you're not a country music lover, take a chance and expand your CD collection with the Love Sick Prairie Dogs. As a rock person, I guarantee you won't be disappointed. And if you ever get a chance to see them live, GO! [...]
