Editorial Reviews
Chicago Parent, Oct. 00
Ever since hearing Rick Scott¹s multi-award winning 'Philharmonic Fool' I've been waiting for his next album release! Four years is a long time to wait -- but well worth it. Some things take time, you know...
Product Description
'Making Faces' is the long awaited follow-up to Rick's 1996 Juno nominated 'Philharmonic Fool', Combining his hallmark Appalachian dulcimer with string instruments, horns, woodwinds and duck calls, Rick creates a smorgasbord of sound that delights the ear and tickles the funny bone. "Winner 2000 Parents Choice Award"

Minimal electro-funk at its best..........2006-08-02
Chicken Lips (a.k.a. Dean Meredith and Andrew Meecham) have been mery much hyped a few years ago when they unleashed their semi-hit "He Not In", whose bombastic intro blasted every discerning dancefloor when selected. At that time, they were also mistaken as being part of that so-called "Electro-Clash" dance scene, while their style was far less rock-influenced than most of their peers at that time. Mostly instrumental, their sound was an exciting architecture of electronics, dubby effects and live playing (for that matter, check their 2002 "Extended Play" CD). This time, things got tightened up a bit within the arrival of singer Jonny Spencer (featured on all of the eight tracks here); what you get here is actually real songs instead of four-to-the-floor fillers (even if these were brilliant most of the time).
Obvious influences rank from early Prince (remember those classic first five albums ?) or David Bowie circa "Scary Monsters" (as evidenced on the exquisite "Lovin' Cup") and even at times they sound like a Martin Hannett-produced combo who would have had a black singer instead of a dark one (kidding). Even if this looks like a curious melting pot, it results in one of the most original sound I've heard in recent times. Spencer's voice diversity is really convincing and the duo's musicianship is clearly more affirmed than on their first two long-play efforts and even if it is cohesive as a whole, "Making Faces" (in its cheer 36 minutes) displays a wide range of club-friendly tunes and... oh, i didn't mention those highly suggestive lyrics ("I'm known for my pleasures / I'll treat you to my treasures / Don't sit down just yet / till it gets as good as it gets" in "White Dwarf" or "I know you're feeling down / No place lower than the ground / All you want is to be loved / Makin' love without sound" from the deeply contagious "Without Sound").
And if you still can't understand why I think all this act is about is so special, "Making faces" features the only love song to a... cow (or is it...?), within the single "Sweet Cow" ("She may not look divine / But she's fine / And I love the way she moves me / Make me feel like a king / She don't sing / But her moo knows how to groove me"... oh God).
Japanese version features 4 bonus tracks, including a tremendous remix of "White Dwarf" by Josh Wink.
Highlights include: "Sweet Cow", "Without Sound", "Lovin' Cup" & "White Dwarf".
BUY THIS.

Album Description
Japanese 2006 pressing in a digipak with earliest release adds 4 bonus tracks 'Sweetcow' (dub), 'Twiggy' (dub), 'White Dwarf' (freakslastdaysofdiscoredo) & 'White Dwarf' (wink vocal reinterpreation). After four years, countless hit remixes for the likes of Morcheeba, Tiga, The Kills and Playgroup, three huge preceding singles and a lot of blood, sweat and tears Chicken Lips return on London's Adrift Records for their third studio album `Making Faces'. This album is the production duo's first foray into full vocal territory and sees the veteran producers explore their soul, dub, funk, electro and disco leanings in their own inimitable style. Teaming up with Spanish-based vocalist Jonny Spencer, Chicken Lips (real names Dean Meredith and Andy Meecham) have yet again created a masterpiece, but for the first time songs are key elements of each and every track. Spencer's ability to sound like a wonderful mixture of David Bowie, Prince and Curtis Mayfield is pure aural delight while his songs are both vivid, surreal and packed with emotion as well as hooks.
