If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.

Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22

I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...

My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.

I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!

I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Do yourself a big favour..........2007-05-07

It has been the best part of 30 years since this album was originally released. It is astonishing that a record of this quality has taken so long to get a re-release. Doll By Doll were, without question, the most visceral, stunning band I ever witnessed live. They were brutal and uncompromising - which may go some way in explaining their failure to succeed. They simply wouldn't follow the crowd or pander to the ridiculously influential (and, in hindsight, incrediby shallow and conceited) English music press. It's a pity, as if ever a band deserved a wider audience it was Doll By Doll.

The key to the album is, of course, singer Jackie Leven, a man with the voice of an angel and a devil wrapped in one. His voice soars and swoops, passionate and beautiful. His songs are just wonderful. Just marvel at The Human Face, Stripshow or Hey Sweetheart and feel your blood rise at finding trhis marvellous record. But this is no solo effort. The band is pugnacious and powerful, with second guitarist Jo Shaw complementing Leven wonderfully.

Do yourself a big favour and buy this cd today. It marches over the majority of rock music with Jackie's big gaffer taped boots. essential.

I have always been a lover of classical music, but had never been truly introduced to the waltz until my wonderful father sent me this CD. After one time through it...I was in love. The romance...the feeling...the images of days gone by. Ladies in long, flowing gowns, men in black tails and white gloves...swirling around a ballroom floor. It's all right there for you to hear. Just lovely. My personal favorite is Song of Vilja, composed by Lehar. I think this to be the most beautiful piece of music ever written. This collection is a must for any lover of the classics....but for waltz enthusiasts, it is Heaven !

I am a great fan of Andre Rieu and his Orchestra and this in possibly their best. I changd the CD's in the changer in my vehicle about once a week but this one usuallly occupies the honored number one spot for months at a time.

A wonderful find for any lover of Viennese music, particularly of the "Silver Era" of operetta. Great renditions of operetta fare by Strauss, Lehar, Kalman, Stolz and Benatzky. Also charming Viennese songs, such as "Die Engeln Kommen auf Urlaub Nach Wien," "Meine Mutterl war eine Weanerin," and other "heuriger" wine garden favorites. The whole thing is a delight!

"Ferenc Fricsay: A Life in Music" consists mostly of top notch 1950s mono recordings in excellent sound, from DG's back catalog. I knew of Ferenc Fricsay (1914-1963) mostly from his recording of Bartok's Piano Concertos 1,2,and 3 with pianist Geza Anda. Fricsay also recorded Mozart's operas "Don Giovanni" and "Die Zauberflote", both with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in the cast for DG; also Beethoven's 9th Symphony; Bartok's "Concerto for Orchestra", and "Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta", all for DG. Fricsay did not live a long time, dying at age 48 from cancer, but he made alot of recordings from 1949 until his death in 1963, many of them sadly hidden in DG's vaults for decades.

DG has given the public a great release with this 9 disc set of Fricsay recordings, mostly in mono, but excellent sound. Do not be afraid of the mono sound: it is very clear and balanced, in many cases better than many stereo and even digital recordings made more recently. Included are Beethoven's Symphony 1; Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with the vocal duets included; Prokofiev's "Classical" Symphony; Franck's Symphonic variations and Rachmaninoff Paganini Variations with Swiss pianist Margrit Weber; Haydn's "The Seasons" (complete, live performance with Maria Stader, Ernst Haeflinger, and Joseph Greindl); works of Falla, Francaix, Hindemith, Frank Martin, Hartmann, and others. There is a wide variety of music and you will not be disappointed.

Most of these recordings are with the RIAS Symphony Orchestra of Berlin, which Fricsay conducted for the majority of his conducting career. The RIAS orchestra was "Radio in the American sector" of Berlin, a part of West Berlin during the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Some tracks are with the Berlin Philharmonic, others with the Berlin Radio Orchestra. In all cases, the orchestras play very well, responding with great precision to every nuance of Fricsay's direction.

I believe Fricsay would have wider recognition had he lived longer. He was roughly a contemporary of Karajan, Solti, Giulini, and Bernstein, and is sadly underrated today. Perhaps this collection will help to boost his reputation with a new generation of music lovers born after his time. Highly recommended.

A great conductor's legacy of great performances of music of a wide variety of composers........2005-09-18

Some two years after Mr. Richman posted his review, I wish only to support his high rating of these masterful performances by one of the greatest conductors of the mid-twentieth century. These recordings are gifts of grace. The fact that this collection remains available is little short of a miracle. And in addition thre is a Fricsay set in the series of "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" also still available. Many other recordings of performances under the baton of Ferenc Fricsay are to be found if one searches under his name on Amazon. His recordings of Verdi's Requiem and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on DG remain among the greatest ever made of either of these two eternal masterpieces.

Try the $12.00 2CD "great Conductors" set first. At that price you can't lose. I predict that having heard those recordings you will quickly seek out and purchase "Ferenc Fricsay, A Life in Music." Too expensive? Not at all. It's worth every penny. It's easily worth several months of anyone's budget for buying CDs. And the recorded interview with Fricsay, already ill and seemingly knowing his death is approaching, will inspire you even as it breaks your heart. His death as he approached his 40th birthday was an incalculable loss to the Western classical tradition. Yet we do have the recordings -- go and listen to them!

Brilliant "Life in Music" Rescued from the Vaults.......2003-08-13

Now that Deutsche Grammophon is part of Universal, we have seen some interesting things happen, and not all of them bad. What I'm referring to in this case is the new "Original Masters" Limited Edition Box Set series. Finally, the classical music world has taken a page out of the jazz reissue handbook -- put out a quality product featuring rare recordings but make its availability limited, and people will snatch it up.

Now in its second round of the "Original Masters" box sets, DG has chosen to follow-up on the success of the "Great Conductors of the Century" series. They have just released two glorious 9-disc collections of the performances of conductors Ferenc Fricsay and Igor Markevitch, the vast majority of which have been previously unavailable on CD.

This particular set, "A Life in Music," showcases some of the numerous recordings made by the great conductor Ferenc Fricsay for Deutsche Grammophon, many of which have been rare (and expensive) collector's items for years. As the track information is non-existent above, I will try to be of assistance.

The first disc contains Beethoven's 1st Symphony (1953) and the Overture and Incidental Music to Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream (1950) both with the Berlin Philharmonic (BP), and Prokofiev's 1st Symphony with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (BRSO) from 1954.

Disc two features Mahler's Ruckert-Lieder with Maureen Forrester (BRSO, 1958), and Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony (BRSO, 1959).

Discs three begins with Respighi's orchestration of Rossini's La Boutique Fantasque (BRSO, 1955) and ends with Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade (BRSO, 1956).

Disc four features the great Waltzes, Polkas, Overtures and Marches of the Strauss Family (all with BRSO from 1949-52). Included here are The Blue Danube, Vienna Blood, Musical Joke, Pizzicato-Polka, Die Fledermaus, The Gypsy Baron, Voices of Spring, Roses from the South, Morning Papers, Annen-Polka, Chit-Chat Polka, and the Radzetky March.

Disc five focuses on Fricsay as an accompanist with pianist Margrit Weber (and the BRSO). Together they tackle Falla's Nights in the Garden of Spain (1957), Francaix's (1956) and Honegger's (1955) Concertos for Piano, Franck's Symphonic Variations (1957) and Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (1960).

Disc six shines the spotlight on 20th Century composers. Here we get Von Einem's Zwischenspiel Interlude (1949), Hindemith's Symphonic Dances (1950), Hartmann's 6th Symphony (1955), and Martin's Petite Symphonie Concertante (1950), with Gerty Herzog on piano, Sylvia Kidd on harpsichord and Irmgard Helmis on harp.

On discs seven and eight, Fricsay performs a memorable account of Haydn's The Seasons. This is a live recording with the Berlin RSO from 1961 featuring soprano Maria Stader, tenor Ernst Haefliger, bass Josef Greindl and the St. Hedwigs Cathedral Choir, Berlin.

The final disc, number nine, wraps things up with "Ferenc Fricsay: A Life Retold," a 57-miunte interview complete with excerpts of memorable performances.

Despite the fact that most of these recordings are in mono (only the selections on disc two, and the Paganini Rhapsody are in stereo), the first rate performances more than compensate for any audio shortcomings. Well, I guess the consolidation of the music industry isn't so bad after all, as long as I can look forward to more reissues like Ferenc Fricsay: A Life in Music.

Alive & Well.......2006-05-17

To answer Billy Austin's question, Mason is alive and well and dividing his time between homes in Norway and Thailand. Still gigging constantly (Europe in the summer, Thailand in the winter) and practicing five hours a day. A lot of musos are making Thailand their home these days ...

My favorite Mason CD is You Can't Win. Agree that the production of this one, Gypsy Blood, is a bit too 1980s, but the songwriting is top shelf as always.

Half good, half not so good.......2005-07-09

This is Mason Ruffner's second album. It was released in 1987 and has been out of print since the 1990's. The songs are 3 to 4 minutes long and the total length is 40 minutes. The sound quality is good but not excellent.

Mason Ruffner is a straight ahead rocker with a hard, in the vain of John Butcher, Dave Edmonds or Rick Derringer. This album was produced by Edmonds.

Ruffner says he is influenced by Jimi Hendrix. More like he tries to copy Hendrix's vocal styles, especially on songs like Red Hot Lover. His guitar playing is adequate but does not come close to Hendrix. On Baby, I Don't Care No More, he sounds like 10 Years After when they do rockabilly.

Ruffner is basically a one hit wonder, with Gypsy Blood getting some mild air play. It is a nice, driving rock song. But, come on, "Gypsy Blood" is such a cliche.

There are 5 enjoyable tracks on this tracks on this CD: Gypsy Blood, Courage, Runnin', Red Hot Lover and Baby, I Don't Care No More. The remaining 5 tracks are not very good songs.

So, by my rating system, 20 minutes of OK songs, this deserves 2 stars. If you really think this great and have to have it, you can always buy my copy.

Gypsy Blood.......2004-06-28

This is a great CD. I checked this CD out from the library system and was not expecting much. Boy was I amazed! Mason Ruffner rocks! If you like the blues and you have an opportunity to aquire this CD, get it. You won't be disappointed.

Where's the First Album ?.......2004-01-30

Ok, so Gypsy Blood is Mason, and that's a big deal in and of itself, but let's get some perspective...

Its sometime around 1983-84 at the Maple Leaf bar in Uptown NO (Carollton for the strict purist). Mason is trying out his wireless guitar for the first time, and wanders out onto the street to solo while leaning on the fender of a 58 Pontiac. Mike Stanley and Willy Cole lays down the tighest rythm in uptown (and that's pretty tight), while Willy belts out backing vocals that give you shiver.

That's a long way from all the synthesizers that obscure Mason's real talents here. Why some producer felt it necessary to obscure (My god, its Dave Edmunds! How could HE do THIS to a great artist like Mason?) what Mason does best, I'll never know.

So what's the solution? Get the first album on Columbia (titled simply "Mason Ruffner", and recorded shortly after Jimmy Page came down to NO and proclaimed him "God" and Bruce came down and carried his amp). Why is this not available on CD? I'd buy it just to hear "Gravediggers" and "Gamblin man" again. He still does those songs live (at least he did four years ago, when I last saw him in Brussels, of all places) and those recordings need to be available again.

Meanwhile Mason, God bless you, how about taking some time off at your ranch outside Austin and recording that straight blues album you promised us that night in Brussels? I'm waiting for with baited breath, hoping that the guitar will jump out the speakers and grab my brain cortex like it did the first time I heard you while walking down Bourbon Street- I missed seeing Miami lose the superbowl to the Redskins that day because you were to damn good to walk away from- now how about giving us another jolt like that? And no synthesizers this time...please?

A Brief Glimpse of A Great Talent.......2004-01-05

Someone needs to get this disc back on store shelves! Ruffner won many accolades back in the late 1980s when this album hit the racks. His guitar reminded people of Jimi Hendrix, his lyrics had a little of that Dylanesque flair (not too much), and for some reason, people who wrote about him at the time spoke about his love for French poets like Baudelaire. Now, I'm not going to tell you that his lyrics are always of that caliber, but many of these songs are marvels. The opener, "Gypsy Blood" is a-may-zing, and remains one of my favorites to this day - great guitar solo. Elsewhere, you'll hear strains of boogie-woogie piano, funky New Orleans organ, and much much more. Gypsy Blood was produced, if I recall properly, by Dave Edmunds. Mason never had another major label disc that I can recall. I do know he played on Bob Dylan's "Oh Mercy" a few years later. I also recall him playing on a few TV shows with a great display of fretwork, plus playing the guitar with his teeth. Does anyone know where Mason is today? If so, please let me know!
