A decade ago, country acts who sounded more like arena rockers gained hegemony on a Music Row that scorned the success of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack as a fluke. As in the past, many there couldn't see the forest for the trees. Both Bentley's own rootsy self-titled debut and Gretchen Wilson's Here for the Party prove quality modern traditionalism still sells. Bentley's sophomore album offers more straight-ahead amalgams of bluegrass, '60s Bakersfield, and raw barroom fare like the Waylonesque "Got a Lot of Leavin' Left to Do" and the beer-guzzling anthem "Domestic, Light, and Cold." He shows real depth on the sensual "Come a Little Closer." The moving, timeless "Gonna Get There Someday," a tale of a son at his mother's grave vowing to make something of himself, easily trumps the album's cliché-ridden title song, as does his fetching treatment of friend Del McCoury's "Good Man Like Me," recorded with McCoury's band. Bentley's lack of artifice proves his greatest strength. Again. --Rich Kienzle
Customer Reviews:
Love it!.......2007-06-09
I did the oppsite of most people, I bought Long Trip Alone first. I had that cd for probably two weeks before I went out and bought this cd. I love it! All the songs are so good. Settle For A Slowdown (Track 4) is undoubtly my favorite. I also love So So Long and Gonna Get There Someday. And how can you forget the title track, Modern Day Drifter? I don't think there is a song that fits Dierks better. (And surprisely he didn't write it.) Dierks is great. And I defintely recommend this cd!
A young George Strait.......2007-05-28
Dierks has an amazing voice- something in his voice has the twinge of a young George Strait too. Dierks comes out strong with a strong 2nd CD.
Come a little closer is a great track, Modern day drifter, accompanied by other great tracks. The fiddle, guitar is electrifying in a lot of the tracks, as well as his deep mellow voice. Whether is'a more upbeat song or not- the infusion of George Strait, somber sexiness, and innocent self-confidence of his tunes makes them catching, and singable.
It's a CD I have had on heavy rotation.
Dierk rules.......2007-03-21
This is a great country album. It has everything,Classic country song sounds, todays sound, love songs.....it's got it all!
At last!!!.......2007-01-15
Country music is in a sad state. You either have to sing pop songs with a southern accent (Carrie Underwood, Rascall Flatts) or with southern instruments (Keith Urban) or have some sappy Hallmark ballad(everyone else). While all this is going on some of the best country music is being made without a splash on country radio or CMT (Hank III, Wayne The Train). But thankfully Dierks Bentley is getting played. Finally someone is making true country music about true country things. He's about the only person in the mainstream who don't make me dry heave. If you don't think this is as country as it gets, go listen to some Cowboy Troy and reevaluate your life.
A new singer added to my favorites list.......2006-07-06
I bought this album blindly. What I mean is I bought it because I'd heard one or two songs on the radio from it that I liked. I do that sometimes-if an artist has two or three songs I like, I usually buy that album because I know the rest of the songs will most likely be just as good. This album is the same. I'd heard "A Lot Of Leavin' Left To Do" and "Come A Little Closer" on the radio and liked them. Then came "Settle For A Slowdown," which became an instant hit for me. I had to try this album, and I'm glad I did. It's a very good album with an equal amount of upbeat songs to ballads. Not to mention the very funny monologues in a few of the songs. Also, another gem on the album that was not released as a single (yet) is the title track, "Modern Day Drifter." It could very possibly be the best song on the album. Buy it, you'll love it.

Hank - Luke the Drifter CD.......2007-01-10
This is a fantastic album that is a must for all Hank Williams fans.
You will hear songs here that are real, and touching. Who could perform these songs as Hank did? Nobody. Songs like Picture From Life's Other Side, Help Me Understand, Beyond The Sunset, are as relevant now as they were the day they were written. Sung by the Master. Don't deny yourself the opportunity of hearing these masterpieces. They are performances that, once you hear them, you will never forget.
Luke the Drifter.......2007-01-02
So many people don't know or have never heard Hank Williams Sr. do these songs. The upbeat, honky-tonk songs are still on the jukeboxes, but these resitations are deep in the heart of Hank. They offer, as Hank wrote, lifes other side. And that's just what you will get here.
A must for anyone who really wants to try and understand the man. Most of these songs were released under the name "Luke the Drifter" so that he could have an outlet to record these songs without interfering with his better known recording persona. But they are so hauntingly beautiful and gives us a look at the more private and personal side of the man.
Truly beautiful music...and on this, the 54th anniversary of his lonesome passing.
Sunday Morning Hank.......2006-07-29
As Colin Escott said, there were really two Hanks- the Saturday night Hank and the Sunday morning Hank. In the end, Saturday night won the day- acute alcoholism weakened him until his heart just gave out in the backseat of a car on New Year's Eve 1952.
This strange, haunting disc is the songs of a world without interstate highways, air conditionning, the polio vaccine, and civil rights. Yet songs like "Everything's Okay" echo the optimism that the common man had to embrace if he was to cope with life's troubles. "I Dreamed About Mama Last Night" is simply beautiful, and Ramblin' Man is positivly haunting.

a fan.......2005-08-27
I just saw Becky, Gordon Johnson, Brian Fesler, and Susan Christianson play live. Amazingly this CD does not quite capture Becky live. Becky and her band are truly talented. I like this CD, Drifter Like Me, California Night, and Cheyenne are great songs on the CD. They have a bluegrass feel and have beautiful harmonies.
Sweet High Lonesome.......2005-05-15
The high and sweet-voiced bluegrass singer from Minnesota is back with another lovely album, DRIFTER LIKE ME. She appears to still be searching for a stable group of musicians to support her poignant style of high lonesome singing-only one of her players (Gordon Johnson on bass) appeared on her fine 2002 effort, RED LEAF. She's an interesting mix of indie-style songwriter and bluegrass composer. She appears to be influenced by Alison Krauss-as many are these days-and sings with great style and sophistication. Talented musicians here include Brian Fester (banjo and guitar), Clay Hess and Richard Nunneley (mandolin) and Becky herself (guitar). The banjo is a return to the sound of her first album: Becky Schlegel and True Blue's THIS LONESOME SONG. Interestingly, RED LEAF had no banjo player and there is no fiddle on any of her albums. While her players are not as awesomely talented as those in Union Station, Becky's effort has a distinct and personal feel due, perhaps, to her having written every song. Notable among the fine songs here are "Windmill"-a sort of celtic/bluegrass combination-and "No Angel" with an amazing guitar/vocal duet. One additional small point-Becky's song here, "Tell Me Now"," is entirely different than her "Tell Me Now" which appears on RED LEAF. Same title-two different Becky Schlegel compositions.

One More Drifter in the Snow offers a bittersweet--but not downbeat--look at a holiday that represents the height of happiness for some, the depths of sadness for others. Following in the classy footsteps of Miss Peggy Lee, Aimee Mann takes an intimate approach to an increasingly hectic time of year. In other words, the set is a throwback to a slower-paced era. (In cinematic terms, that means more Meet Me in St. Louis, less Jingle All the Way.) There are two fitting originals, "Calling on Mary" (Mann) and "Christmastime" (Jon Brion and Michael Penn). The rest are seasonal favorites, with the exception of Jimmy Webb's "Whatever Happened to Christmas," which may be new to some. On all tracks, the focus is on the tasteful strings--credit Patrick Warren for the chamberlin, celeste, and pump organ--and Mann's delicate delivery. Overall, the artist is more interested in providing comfort than radical reinvention, although a dreamier-than-usual "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" enjoys a slight edge over the other selections. Grant Lee Phillips, taking over from Boris Karloff, provides the theatrical narration on "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Album Description
Grammy winner and Oscar nominee Aimee's first Christmas album is a collection of holiday classics and two original, beautiful, and bittersweet songs written by Mann and Michael Penn. Reminiscent of classic albums of the 40's and 50's, but without any retro kitsch. Like Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, and Peggy Lee, Aimee Mann captures the emotional beauty of Christmas.
Customer Reviews:
good addition to Christmas music.......2007-01-16
This is an excellent, not so typical, Christmas CD that I think anyone can enjoy. I especially enjoyed the Mr. Grinch cover.
Great CD!.......2007-01-11
This is a must for your music collection. Aimee Mann never sounded better.
If you love Aimee Mann.......2007-01-09
This is a must for any Aimee Mann fan! It didn't blow my socks off as far as a Christmas cd goes, but Aimee's versions were nice. I especially liked her "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch", and the original song "Calling on Mary". I just found out her producer and writing partner is her husband, and she is smiling in the pictures inside the cd, so maybe her melancholy is ebbing just a bit!
Mellow Christmas tunes.......2007-01-04
As a hugh fan of the soulful Aimee Mann I had to purchase this Christmas collection and the lady again delivers in spades. Smooth, mellow, and fresh (Calling on Mary), Aimee's CD is just the ticket for a relaxing evening around the glowing Christmas tree with a spiked egg nog in hand.
This is sure to become a classic Christmas must-have just as Vanessa Williams' Star Bright has. And check out the new Hall and Oates Home for Christmas CD as well. Together, these three CD's make for a great evening of Christmas song listening.
One great song and . . ........2006-12-22
Sorry to be negative, I really like Aimee Mann's music. "Calling on Mary" show's her creativity, talent, and brillance. Unfortunately, the other nine songs are safe interpretations of Christmas classics. I was hoping for something more daring and fresh.

NOT One of rhe Best.......2004-11-30
Nobody liked Marty Robbins and his music more than I and while he was with Columbia Records(twice) his music generally excelled. While some of his standard goodies (like "Mr. Shorty") are here, the songs are not his best(although few would argue that he doesn't sing them well). Only the untraveled and unsophisticated who have never heard Marty's OTHER albums (just sticking to the Western ones if you like) would believe this is one of the best. The seldom-seen "Feleena" is included and gives us the middle part of the "El Paso" story but it is cumbersomely written and was not a big hit. Virtually anything by Marty Robbins is worth having but this is NOT his best.
One of the best!.......2000-11-24
I think I have owned almost every recording,Marty ever made. His stories are captivating, and his clear, mellow voice, allow you to hear, understand(and hang on to,) every word.A real pleasure!
This is one of the best western ballad albums ever made.......1998-06-20
If you love western ballads, this is one of the best albums you can find.......All of the songs were written between 1960 and 1966......If you liked "EL PASO"......you will love this album. The recording techniques and the recording itself seem to exceed any expectations you would have from a recording that was made so many years ago.......and I personally think that Marty Robbins was one of the most talented western balladeers there ever was. If you could wear a CD out, I would be worn out this one out by now......

fabulous.......2006-08-03
Waylon's voice is like none other. This is one that you can listen to all day without changing. There's so much emotion and it definately reaches to a deeper soul.
Drifting into Stardom.......2006-01-29
I recently saw Waylon in the Walk the Line movie, he was excellent as Jerry Lee Lewis. I enjoyed his singing in the movie and on the CD...So decided to investigate if he had music of his own to buy...When I found The Drifter I was anxious to see if I would enjoy that as much as I did his singing in WTL...I am happy to say that I did, and also happy that the majority of the songs were indeed written by him. He is a very talented young man and I found his music to be original and clever, I also found it to be from the heart, without being corny.
I hope this young man touches other people in the same way he has touched me.
I look forward to seeing him in the movie "Crazy,"the story of guitarist Hank Garland.
I truly believe that he will have a great following before too long.
Do yourself a favor and buy this CD, you won't be sorry..

I loved this cd. Each song is filled with such strong emotion and sincere expression. The words in each song capture a deep look into life. It is very powerful and moving. Waylon's voice is extremely unique and lends itself to stir up feelings you will not be expecting. The music and words are melodic and haunting at the same time. This is and excellent cd that leaves you wanting more.

Speak No Evil.......2004-09-06
The absolute best album they have recorded. I can't wait for there third cd! You won't be disappointed in this cd! You will love every single song on the cd! You'll find yourself playing this cd the most of all your cd collection. They are even better live!
Blue-Grass, Roots Music, Alt Country?.......2002-08-28
Whatever you call this music, Pinmonkey has a great sound. I'm not much of a fan of modern country, but this CD and this band are great! The many original songs, such as "Black Train," have an old-time country sound and thoughful lyrics. Their covers are also very fresh, especially "Augusta."
I saw the band in Iowa in July 2002 and they sound great live. Their new stuff (catch "Barbed Wire and Roses" on CMT or the better country radio stations) promises that their next CD, due in October, will build their reputation.
best new artist in a long time.......2002-08-19
These guys are great! They have a very unique sound, but are still country. I recommend this cd to everyone.
A Great CD From Nashville's Best New Band.......2002-04-06
You may not have heard of Pinmonkey yet. Don't let that stop you from buying this CD. It will take less than an hour to both listen to the CD for the first time and to become a Pinmonkey Junkie. Ten solid songs of both original material and covers with a sound unique to anything coming out of Nashville. Pick up "Speak No Evil" today and catch them on the road this spring and summer.

A Young George Strait (with questionable hair fashion)!.......2005-05-11
DB is a young George Strait with a rich voice and a bonus ability in song writing. DB has reverence for old timers like David Allan Coe and Del Mccoury band (yet another compilation is on this album) and the whiskey and beer they drank too. DB's sophomore effort is a nice follow-up to his freshman hit CD. Everything from the mainstream radio hit 'Lotta Leaving Left' to 'Come a little Closer'. I look forward to DB's next 10 albums as he attempts to out do his first couple of CD's. Nice job Dierks. Again.

Charlie Musselwhite's is the voice of experience. One can hear it on every note of Continental Drifter, where the relaxed feel of the experienced bluesman is evident in the main harmonica riff of "Little Star" and the smooth, Delta-style guitar of "Blues Up the River." Several of the songs have a strong Cuban-Brazilian feel, and Musselwhite is joined on several of these by friend Eliades Ochoa and his band, Cuarteto Patria. Musselwhite's primarily known as a harmonica player, and it's easy to hear why on this album; whether he's spicing up the Cuban-blues mix of "Sabroso" or soloing over the jumpy rhythm of "Can't Stay Away from You," he's always bang on the note. --Genevieve Williams

Audio Masterpiece from "Memphis" Charlie and Cuarteto Patria.......2004-12-13
Blues-harpist "Memphis" Charlie Musselwhite has consistently incorporated different styles into his already generous repertoire. Continental Drifter is a split session; consisting of "The Band Session" with his touring group, and "The Cuban Session" with internationally renowned musicians Eliades Ochoa and Cuarteto Patria. Recorded between Norway's Grieghallen Studios and Fantasy Studios in San Francisco, CA, the record was released on April 20, (Earth Day) in 1999. On the cuts with his touring group, he explores a few mellow shuffles that remind one of his Chicago days with Barry Goldberg and Harvey Mandel. Musselwhite's mellow tenor vocals have found solid comfort on wax in recent years, and his harp control has matured to unspeakable heights. "The Cuban Session" transports the listener back to a club in old Havana; Cuarteto Patria laying the groundwork for "Que Te Palece, Cholita", and radio hit "Chan Chan (Charlie's Blues)". As a special treat at the end of the album, Musselwhite gives a strikingly proficient Delta interpretation on the guitar. Continental Drifter's amalgamation of musical cultures is an important contribution to the Blues that will be felt for decades to come. All content copyright www.maximumink.com

Traditional Blues Meet The Buena Vista Social Club.......2001-12-20
Continental Drifter is an interesting album because it presents three discrete blues styles in sequence for the listener to consider and enjoy. Musselwhite has a long history with Chicago blues and with Delta blues, both of which are sampled here, but what makes the CD compelling is the marriage of the blues to traditional Cuban musical forms. Chan Chan sounds fresh from the Buena Vista Social Club.
I knew the Cuban songs already and really enjoyed Musselwhite singing English lyrics he wrote for them as the Cubans sang their lyrics in Spanish in response. The amusing part is that although Musselwhite's lyrics bear little relation to the original Spanish ones, it still works out very well.
The band's wailing rendition of No sets the album's tone, but the three Cuban songs along with the classic Lecuona instrumental composition Siboney are the highlights.
I give the CD only four stars because I find the last acoustical cuts to be dull after listening to the musically more robust songs that precede them. Despite that, I highly recommend Continental Drifter as a worthy addition to any blues collection.
A definite must have!.......2000-07-31
An eclectic blend of music consisting of Delta blues with a distinct Brazillian flavor. The few tunes that I heard on WBFO (Buffalo, NY) were simply hors d'oeuvres for the feast that would inevitably follow upon purchase of the CD. I'm listening to it right now and find it hard to keep from dancing around like the blues lovin' fool that I am. This CD is absolutely stunning and truly deserves a rating of 6 STARS or more!
beauty, soul and rhythm.......2000-03-16
I wish you could listen to the other songs on this album, they are my favorites. This is truly beautiful music, gets me dancing, too. I heard one song in the car, pulled into the nearest record store and have enjoyed it many times.

Excellent album!.......2006-11-08
Get this and "Live at Bareback" if you are tired of waiting for the next Eagles release. No, get them if you like honest-to-goodnes great singing, songwriting and playing. If you like the Eagles, CSN, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, America or James Taylor, you will love this. "Running Horse", "Live at Bareback" and their DVD "Keeping the Legend Alive" (also released under different names) are all excellent. Poco is now better than they have ever been! Also check out Paul Cotton's solo "Firebird". These guys are going thru a mid-life explosion!
Blows me away!.......2006-02-20
One of the few new CD's I truly enjoyed the very first listen through. Although I loved the earlier Poco CD's, this CD seems to be a mix of the older and "newer" band members, with great results. Songs like "Never Get Enough" and "Shake it" feature the newer band members along with the heart-felt ballads such as "One Tear at a Time" and "That's what Love's All About". With the hope that years from now the POCO legacy will continue as reminded by the last song on the CD, "Running Horse". As another reviewer said... "Induct POCO into the R&R Hall of Fame!"
Surprising Life in This Old Horse!!!.......2006-01-09
When I found out that Poco had released a new studio album, I had to admit, I was somewhat sceptical as to what the band could do 13 years or so after their last studio offering, Legacy. I think all diehard Poco fans will find "Running Horse" a wonderful album, and a great testament to the durability of this group born back in 1969 (or 68).
Leading the charge are Paul Cotton and Rusty Young-two musical genuises. Think Lennon and McCartney...no seriously...These guys are brilliant musicians. Cotton being the Stephen Stills no one ever heard of. His songwriting is much more direct and compelling than Stills, and his guitar work is certainly his equal. Young, may be the best lap steel player alive. His work is unprecendented. He and Cotton are single handledly responsible for country-rock. There would be no Eagles, Linda Ronstadt or modern groups like Blackhawk or Alabama without Poco.
Cotton and Young have somehow managed to stay relevant and fresh. They have continuously reinvented themselves. In 1989, it was Richard Marx and Randy Meisner that helped make Legacy a huge hit. But it was Cotton and Young who's songs shimmered with pop-rock sensibilities. In the Atlantic years, there were these two albums, Ghost Town and Inamorata, that nobody has ever heard of. There were more should have been hit singles on these discs than on any two Poco albums combined. Radio had gotten away from the Firefall, England Dan, Seals & Crofts sound in favor of New Wave, which certainly did bands like Poco in.
But Poco survived. Their fans can now embrace over 3 decades of music that has stood the test of time. Rusty and Paul continue to write brilliant stuff. They even have a new (19 year) Poco alum, Jack Sundrud, who's added another dimension to the "Running Horse".
The production is smooth and clean on this 11 song collection. The opener, "One Tear At A Time" is classic Rusty Young. A song that tugs at the heartstrings and would feel right at home late night on any soft rock station. "Everytime I Hear The Train" is classic Paul Cotton. A little more emotion, a little more guitar, and a great story. And so it goes..Cotton, Young and Sundrud who pens 2 nifty songs, "Shake It" and "Never Loved.." Other super standouts are "That's What Love is All About", authored by Young and Pure Prairie League/Little Feat alum Craig Fuller and Paul Cotton's "Running Horse" which really is a band biography nicely delivered in western prose. Mike Clute's production skills give this release a smooth, substantive sound. This is an album that can be enjoyed from start to finish.
This horse continues to ride. In light of all the current garbage that poses as music, "Running Horse" reminds us of a band and a sound that keeps going. Poco is an amazing group that should be in the rock and roll hall of fame!!!!
21st Century Poco.......2005-10-16
If not for a few dead spots, this could have been a great record. Poco's first new album in over a decade also has some great moments. Rusty Young breaks out his mandolin and pedal steel on quite a few tracks, and the amazing harmony vocals that herald the return of prodigal drummed George Grantham brought back many memories of the great Poco albums of the 1970's. This album is by no means a disappointment and I would encourage any Poco fan to pick it up. A little more Paul Cotten and a little more vocal energy from Rusty Young could have made this a 4 or 5 start record.
Poco is back.......2005-07-08
Granted. There are many soft ballads on this album. The harmonies, the melodies, the great voices, well just Poco at its best imho. Unlike the other reviewer I like all the vocals even on the ballads and I find this album to be one of the finest Poco albums ever. If you like Poco's softer tunes this is one album to get... And I still got solid teeth and enjoy listening to Audioslave, Metallica, ... I also think that Jack Sundrud blends in very well and even adds a new welcome touch to the music. Not much hardcore country rock but fine melodic music featuring great instrumentation and voices. Jummi.
