This Sony recording supposedly collects his best. It does and it doesn't. The "Danse Macabre"--a perennial Saint Saëns fave--is definitely better than any others on the market--crisper, livelier, and ... er... creepier. And the Bacchanale is also superbly done. (Don't take my word for it though--you can compare these yourself from the various samples.) But as great as these individual pieces are, Sony failed to bring to the "Swan" the rest of the zoo from "Carnivale des Animaux," and, worse, they forgot the "Aquarium," too! Plus, the "Organ Symphony" *must* be heard in its entirety to sound like the serious piece of music that it is.

I haven't found the noumenal Saint-Saëns collection yet. But this one surely isn't phenomenal.

Overall this is a great listen to some of the best trumpet players of all-time in this idiom. All of the pieces are impeccably played by some of the best. I didn't discover this tape in my collection until recently, and boy I'm glad I did.

Lo que sí me dejó un poco decepcionado es que se trata de una recopilación. Los temas fueron extraídos de diversos LPs de cada cantante. Ellos nunca se juntaron para realizar este disco y, por lo tanto, no hay canciones a dúo ni tampoco tocan juntos. Eso es una lástima, porque habría sido algo magnífico. Pero las canciones son tan buenas que dejan esta situación sólo como algo anecdótico.

I know someone who was there, and he says that everyone said that Judith, if anything, has gotten even more awesome than she was with the Seekers - and they were pretty brilliant, as we all know.

I'm not at all sure what she is doing now, but if you listen to this, you might get a good idea of her way of putting her own stamp on the music of the 60's. She has a vocal characteristic that is quite distinguished - a sort of energy and conviction that you just can't match precisely anywher else. Even on the songs here that are covers, her voice, and Athol, Bruce, and Keith, are terrific.

The first time I ever heard the Seekers, I was 8, it was midnight after a long journey to a farm just outside London, and it was exciting, exhilarating, even a bit mysterious - I had never heard anything quite like it. That piece (this little light) is certainly an original arrangement, with that twist in the harmony, that everyone knows and takes for granted now...

Ther are some silly songs here, but it's not too important, and the fault of the record company, noit the Seekers, for goodness sake...
