5 out of 5 stars Every Song Inspires.......2002-03-26

The CD starts out with plenty of energy with The Lord Reigns! and makes you want to play the first song over and over again, but the only thing that will stop you is that the next song is powerful in its message and tender to the soul. You can keep these spiritual songs on your lips throughout the day. If these two excellent songs aren't enough, there are 8 more that have inspiration throughout. You won't want to skip over any of the songs. Although I had not even known of Damaris Carbaugh until recently, every one of the 6 CD's I now have of hers draw me nearer to the Lord. Her voice is unique: you need to hear her.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A mixed bag, but mostly good.......2001-11-21

"Apology" is an interesting album, in that it contains several excellent songs that have already been released on other albums, along with a very mixed crop of songs that haven't been released previously. Of the new songs, my favorites are "I Awoke in Iowa", the "Iowa Apology" song (an "apology" for "I Awoke in Iowa"), and "Apology" (which is an apology for the "Iowa Apology" song and just about every other song Ratshin ever wrote).

My main criticism of this album is that the new material is too heavily weighted toward the humor, without the depth of emotion I usually look for in Uncle Bonsai material. Most of the emotion comes from tracks repeated from "Doug" or other sources.

Also, many of the songs are musically weaker than usual. Even though I know the endless repitition in "I Love You I Love You I Love You I'm trying to Read" is intended to be part of the joke, it just gets annoying after a while.

All that said, this album is too good to rate only 3 stars, though it probably doesn't quite deserve 4 stars, either. Call it 3.5 stars.

This is what all the modern jazz lovers and new jazz naysayers should be listening to. Don't waste your time with another musty wynton marsalis record. These compositions are tasty to no end, a sonic buffet if you will. If you want name-checks - there is a little Mingus, Coleman, Pastorius, Raymond Chandler, James Baldwin and bill Frisell in all of this. wait, Bill frisell is on this record. and so is julian priester. sweet jesus, check it out.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-02-07

Climbing is by Matt Russell, who, so far as I can tell, is a Chicago native -- according to his website, he did a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago and before he left, turned his apartment into a studio and recorded Climbing. This makes sense: the album is all about transitions, about moving from one place in life to another. There is some beautiful music here. Check out "Daybreak", the title track, and "My Way Home." Impressive debut.

5 out of 5 stars A Hidden Treasure.......2007-02-07

Matt Russell's "Climbing" is the hidden gem of 2007. This album is evocative, poignant, and thoroughly charming. If you are looking for a record that will lure you in with subtle beauty, this is the one. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful record..........2007-02-06

By turns quiet and haunting Matt Russell's 'Climbing' is a stunning debut. Sparse arrangemen--I hear guitar, harmonica, various woodwinds, piano--surround subtle and often quite stirring lyrics. If you love Springsteen's 'Nebraska," Elliot Smith or Tom Waits check this out. You won't be disappointed.

              Product Description

Another indie band, another record. What else is new? Well, these Maryland boys known as The Payola Reserve actually have something here. A mellow "Music is Not Music" begins the record. At first listen it may sound bland, yet midway through the song it pops into a nice piano rock song. Later on in the song comes a harmonica. As funny as that may sound, it actually works really well with the jam they have going on. The third track titled "Brave New Radio" reminds me of a Panic! At the Disco like song mixed with an 80s rock song. The chorus' are very fast paced and the back ups are interesting to listen to "wooooooah." The breakdown is what got me, I felt like I was in the middle of a police chase. I enjoy the choice of instruments that TPR have chosen. "Illegal" begins with a shaker, staying through the majority of the song. "Lay in Wait" is a much slower track in which lead singer Ben Pranger sings beautifully over the lighter music. The ending tracks are nothing but good ending songs. The songs continue to get quiet, leading into "Antiquing" in which the instruments headed into a major jam session for a great outro. Overall, they have a very clean sounding record. I don't know if they could be the next big thing (see: Fall Out Boy) but at least they are going in the right direction. --Anthony Dobrini / themusicedge[dot]com
