Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19
Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.
My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.
The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12
Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.
Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.
And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.
Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.
This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.
Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.
So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

Album Description
"What happens when you pluck five 19-year old country boys out of the desert and dump them into the pile of coke and condoms that is the LA music scene? The Mean Reds" - NME. "Live shows have seen them dress up like rotting zombies, dead Andy Warhol associates and, most terrifyingly, the cast of Lizzie McGuire" - Alternative Press. "Anthony Anzalone has never seen footage of Germs legend Darby Crash performing live. Yet, writhing on the floor of Spaceland wrapped in cellophane and tape and naked but for a pair of vintage gym shorts and black eyeliner, the 19-year old Mean Reds lead singer recalls the 80's punk icon. The normally aloof 30-something music fans packing the club smile and press up against each other to get closer" - LA Weekly.

Customer Reviews:
The wrong drummer.......2006-10-26
Too often the drummer works against Grappelli's fluid sense of swing and drags the group into a "Cotton-Eyed Joe" groove. Still, it's Steph and Vassar, so one bright shining star for each of the masters.
Truly One of a Kind!.......2003-08-05
This CD swings from the first cut to the last. The solos between Vassar Clements and Stephan Grappelli are different styles but compliment each other. Guitarist Martin Taylor and Pedal Steel Guitarist Doug Jernigan really work together well on tunes like "Bluesette". I believe this album is one of a kind with the instrumentation used. It is my understanding most of the album cuts, the arrangements and the other players on the album were dictated by Mr. Grappelli and Mr. Clements. It is truly a CD from the artists creativity and not necessarily the demands of the producers.
Unfortunately, a disappointment.......2002-12-02
I've been a big fan of both Stephane Grappelli and Vassar Clements for years, and have seen them both play live, and so I was quite excited to find that they had recorded an album together. While waiting for it to be delivered, I imagined Grappelli's virtuoso runs in the upper register soaring above Clements' hot rhythmic chording and tight harmonies. Unfortunately, I reluctantly have to say that this CD was somewhat of a disappointment. The two great musicians rarely play together on the same song for very long, and in any case both of them are generally forced to play "second fiddle" to the pedal steel (Doug Jerrigan), amplified guitar (Martin Taylor), electric guitar (Davis Causey), and drums (Kenny Malone). It's as if the greatest jazz violinist and the greatest country/bluegrass fiddler were brought together for a historic recording, and then just tossed in here and there almost as an afterthought. Still, I have to give at least three stars despite all of this, because any recording with two musicians such as Grappelli and Clements is bound to have at least a few special moments, and even this one does have have a few. But it could have been so much more....
These two gentlemen are masters of the violin........1999-05-14
It has been a long time since I heard this - I can't wait to hear it again.

This dashing and intelligent tribute to Walt Whitman's poetry as art song puts commitment to artistry at center stage. With uncommon sensitivity and magnificent voice, Thomas Hampson lovingly interprets 22 songs by various composers, successfully capturing the emotional range of the American bard's verse by delicately caressing the poetry and, alternately, igniting its every nuance. These song settings enhance the innate music in Whitman's poems, giving them passionate expression in another dimension. Craig Rutenberg's stellar accompaniment is a lesson in effective collaboration. Hampson's interspersing of four poetry readings is below this recording's interpretive caliber, but it's a nice touch. Non-Whitman-heads may find the entire recording a bore, though. - -Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
A labor of love, but the songs aren't first rate.......2006-12-31
As a concept album, Hampson's 1997 tribute to Walt Whitman earned critical praise for its sensitivity and musicality. There's no doubt that the singer is in rare form here--it would be hard to imagine any of this repertoire better sung. He isn't a good reciter of poetry in the four spoken tracks. The major drawback, however, is that none of these songs are close to being masterpieces, and quite a few are decidedly minor. The avid listener can cncentrate on the poetry instead of the music, I suppose--Hampson's enunciation is crystal clear--but after six or seven items couched in the same rather timid Anglo-American art song form, this lavor of love becomes rather taxing as a listening experience. Taken a few at a time, however, these are intriguing choices that combine into a unqiue recital.
Couldn't find another place to ask, thus this line........1999-02-03
Am looking for the bugle calls commonly used when raising the flag and lowering it. Specifically, I am looking for "To the Colors" and "Retreat" in bugle calls. Do you have it?

A match made in heaven........2002-05-14
"Together At Last" is one of the best and hottest albums I ever heard. The selections are mostly jazz and gospel, but presented in a format that really swings. Pat Yankee is a great blues singer who worked for many years with the great Turk Murphy Band in San Francisco. The Hot Frogs, from Los Angeles, were a very popular dixieland and swing show band who, for 20 years, were favorites on the jazz festival circuit, Although Pat and the Hot Frogs only performed together at a few jazz festivals, they sound as if they had worked together for 20 years. The album is mostly Pat with the band providing superb backing. However, there are four cuts (out of 17) where the Hot Frogs show what they can do without Pat. If you enjoy dixieland, swing and blues, with a little gospel thrown in, this album is for you. It is truly a match made in heaven.
