Mediocre.......2007-06-18
This is indeed a pretty fair representation of the work of Jerry Reed. That is unfortunate because it reflects poorly on this gifted entertainer. The songs are "his" but the recording quality is poor. That's a shame.
ESSENTIAL JERRY REED IS DEFINITELY ESSENTIAL!!.......2007-01-18
I have always liked Jerry Reed's voice and songs. But this CD made me realize just how good of an artist he is. I listened to it for one strait month--over & over & over.... That was just when driving. That doesnt count for the all the times at home it was played.
Mad about Jerry.......2006-06-28
This album is a great collection of his best songs. It reflects his earlier music and later when he worked on the sound track for Smoky and the Bandit. His soulful voice and upbeat lyrics are amazing.
SON!-SATIONAL.......2005-10-28
The so called Alabama Wild Man was a triple threat talent in the seventies, playing hotshot session guitar for everyone from Elvis (who covered both his GUITAR MAN and U.S. MALE) on down, scoring charismatic smashes of his own including the swampy ode AMOS MOSES and the catch-phrase classic WHEN YOU'RE HOT YOU'RE HOT, and serving as Burt Reynolds' motion picture makin' cronie in GATOR and SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT. THE ESSENTIAL JERRY REED is exactly what the title suggests: all the witty, gritty good ole boy antics you could ever ask for, and probably more. From the autobiographical GUITAR MAN to the introspective SMELL THE FLOWERS to the sprightly instrumental THE CLAW, Reed adroitly covers all the bases. Still, it's the novelty numbers he's best known for, and he hardly disappoints in that category. LORD, MR. FORD is one of the wittiest "car-tunes" since Chuck Berry wrote NO MONEY DOWN, while SHE GOT THE GOLDMINE (I GOT THE SHAFT) is as much fun as divorce songs get, and ANOTHER PUFF is the SMOKE, SMOKE, SMOKE THAT CIGARETTE of its era. Toss in SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT trucker favorite EAST BOUND AND DOWN, and THE BIRD, about a biped that imitates George Jones and Willie Nelson, and you've got yourself an album that's both funny AND funky. Make no mistake son, this is the BEST "best of" Jerry Reed that your dollar can buy. RATING: FOUR GUITAR PICKS
Surprisingly good--and what a picker!.......2003-06-24
Jerry Reed has good chops on the guitar, a great singing voice, and nice songs to sing. Sure it's "country," but it's more like Willie Nelson country, i.e., it cuts across musical boundaries. He sings with great personality; I like the man. A real good time.

Customer Reviews:
It IS Skimpy.......2007-07-30
I have to agree with the observation that this CD leans towards the skimpy side, perhaps not for exactly the same reasons as stated by another reviewer, but nevertheless wanting in one respect.
The hit 78 rpm and then 45 rpm single is what made stars out of recording artists back then, and Floyd Cramer had 11 of them on the Billboard Hot 100 between his first in 1958 [Flip Flop And Bop - # 87] and his last in early 1963 [Java - # 49]. Two of those 11 hits crossed over to the R&B and Country charts, and from 1967 to 1980 he added four more to the Adult Contemporary [AC] charts, two of which also crossed to the Country listings [one of those, Stood Up, is here]. In 1977 he also had a # 67 Country with the old Cascades hit, Rhythm Of The Rain, in conjunction with The Keyboard Kick Band.
What we do not get in this "essential" volume, in terms of hit singles are: Hang On [the flip of Your Last Goodbye and a # 95 in 1961]; Let's Go [the B-side to Chatanooga Choo Choo and # 90 in 1962]; Hot Pepper [# 63 in 1962]; Java [# 49 in 1963]; By The Time I Get To Phoenix [# 32 AC in 1968]; Theme From Two-Twenty-Two [# 39 AC in 1970]; Dallas [# 32 Country/# 34 AC in 1980; and the above-mentioned Rhythm Of The Rain.
Also, in the excellent five pages of liner notes written by Colin Escott (which also contains a complete discography of the contents except for chart performances), we learn that, in addition to backing everyone from Elvis to Jim Reeves to Hank Locklin to Don Gibson to The Browns - to name just a few - he also recorded Fancy Pants with backing by The Louisiana Hayride Band way back in 1953 for the Abbott label and it too charted at # 28 on the Pop listings. Including that in this essential CD would have been a nice touch, but instead we get a 1958 RCA re-recording.
Not that there is anything wrong with this particular rendition, but it seems to me that producer Paul Williams could have used just a little more imagination in putting this one together. including adding maybe another 5 tracks.
Floyd, who died from cancer on New Year's Eve 1997, was at last inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2003.

A Good Cross Section of His Early Days As a Star.......2004-12-15
I don't have 40 albums by FC like one reviewer; I bet you don't either. Obsession and single-gaitedness are not my virtues. I do believe that Floyd Cramer had a wider range of knowledge about music than the possessor of so much of his work; witness THIS package of tunes. I like FC music as much as, say, Michael Jackson's mother who was treated by her son to a private FC concert once. Besides "Last Date" and "On the Rebound", Floyd's version of "Java" preceded Al Hirt's version into the market. There are two Hank Williams, Sr. tunes, one from Texas Playboy Bob Wills, two from the (ahem) eclectic Ray Charles (three if you count "Georgia on My Mind", written and first performed by Hoagy Carmichael), and "Corinne, Corinna", a song associated with Ray Peterson of "Tell Laura I Love Her Fame" and blues shouter Big Joe Turner before that and even back to Bo Chatmon in the 1930s before that. (Oddly the same song is on Eric Clapton's "Blues" album as "Alberta, Alberta"; what does HE know?). Anyway, I was there. This is a good representation of Floyd's songs and proves FC was not just a bohunk Nashville piano player. Like most us, he appreciated diverse music, no matter how he may have pandered to the single-gaited who only knew his country music. We lost Floyd to cancer in 1997, but he left us a lot of good music--from MANY sources. Enjoy.
Too Much Variety?.......2002-07-27
The "Essential Floyd Cramer" is a mixed bag of instrumental country. FC's reputation as a top recording session pianist far exceeds his success on the charts. According to Billboard, this Samti, LA native had only 3 chart hits from 1960-1980. That statistic hides his obvious talent at the keyboard. I referred to the CD as a "mixed bag" because FC divides the 20 selections between mellow and upbeat. This reviewer strongly favored the former. These include his trademark "Last Date" plus "Stood Up", "The Young Years" and "Your Last Goodbye". For traditionalists there are 2 solid renditions of Hank: "Lovesick Blues' and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry". The other half of the CD is upbeat, which I don't believe is FC's strong point: "What'd I Say", Corrine Corrina (!) and something called "Flip Flop and Bop" were in sharp contrast to the mellow sounds. Fans of instrumentals may consider this "Essential" a 5 star effort based on the sheer variety herein. Those expecting all mellow music in the "Last Date" tradition will be disappointed. To give FC the benefit of the doubt, 4 stars are a nice compromise rating. Country fans should closely examine the sponsoring "Essential" series for well-produced compilations of our past heroes' best efforts. (The "Essential Skeeter Davis" CD has her sung answer to "Last Date").
Twenty of the Best Piano Pieces I've Ever Heard!.......2002-07-17
In the early '60s, Floyd Cramer had a nice run of hit singles on the charts. Some of those chart hits included here are the obvious - "Last Date", "San Antonio Rose", "On the Rebound", and "Chatanooga Choo Choo". But this collection spotlights more than just those charts. There are great versions of "Java", "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", and many others showcased in Floyd's talented slip-note key style. Great sound quality, great songs, and a great collection!

If you like the music of Floyd Cramer this is a must buy. Clean Multitrack recording. Good mix, the piano rides right on the top.
Easy Listening, beautiful piano work.......1998-10-28
Floyd Cramer came from a humble beginning. He was a mill worker in Louisiana. I do not know very much about him personally, but I have enjoyed his music for many years. The first hit I can remember is Last Date or at least this was one of the first ones. When you are feeling down, you can listen to the strains of beautiful music from his piano and right away you have to feel better.

Reminiscening.......2007-04-01
Floyd Cramer was my parent's favorite musician. My mom is deceased and my dad has Alzheimer's. Sometimes I will play "Last Date", which was their song. It helps me remember and relive my parents happiness. Great CD!
Great gift for my Dad.......2007-01-18

floyd cramer CD.......2006-11-04
Purchase was smooth. The CD arrived in new condition, and has so far, not had any problems with listening to it.
A CD of mixed emotions.......2000-08-18
I was overjoyed when I first learned that "Collector's Series", my all-time favourite Floyd Cramer audio cassette was released on CD.
Let me start off with the good points. I firmly feel that Collector's Series captures the magic of Floyd Cramer more than any other album released. "Last Date", one of his trademark songs, is recorded live and is different (read: better) than any other version released. Specifically, there is more piano, no vocals, and no bells. The version is much more smooth-sounding in my opinion.
The quality of the mastering is very good; each song from the cassette is upgraded nicely to CD with clearer sounds.
However, I am also very disappointed that only eight tracks from the audio cassette made it to the CD version. Only one of my favourite three from the cassette (Last Date, On the Rebound and You Needed Me) got upgraded. Tracks such as "You Needed Me" are sorely missed on this CD because they do not appear on any other Floyd Cramer album.
In summary: Great CD, but it needs more tracks from the cassette version.

NOT the best Chinese music there is.......2004-04-24
'The Butterfly Lovers' violin concerto is NOT the best that Chinese music has to offer, despite being one of the most well-known works in the Chinese repertoire. This goes for any interpretation of this work by any conductor and orchestra, not just this one. The first and the last ten-minute sections of the music (the entire concerto is nearly thirty minutes long) are admittedly just exquisite, but the middle portion, which is supposed to depict the struggles of the heroine against her adversaries, is utterly ruined by the use of the wood clapper, an extremely crude Chinese instrument which should never have been admitted into the otherwise beautiful work. It's as if a large carbuncle were painted onto the nose of the Mona Lisa. The composers He Zhanhao and Chen Gang really should have known better. Much of Chinese music is actually genuinely beautiful, but there are also 'earsores' aplenty -- some of which have been unhappily incorporated into the concerto.
I wish to comment a little incidentally on the uncharitable characterization of Chinese music provided by one of the reviewers below, darragh o'donoghue, to the effect that native Chinese music sounds like 'a lunatic charging through a kitchen'. I really don't think such a comment is fair to Chinese music at all -- there is a great deal of authentic Chinese music that is quite as beautiful as anything by, say, Ralph Vaughan Williams. To make sweeping claims on the music of a cultural tradition on the basis of what one finds in a few films would be about as objective as, say, saying of Western music that it sounds like the screams of barbarians solely on the basis of listening to Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps. Or rap or heavy metal.
A comptent attempt, nothing more........2003-10-04
When the "Butterfly Lover Concerto" was first conceived, it was intended to distill the best of Western classical and traditional Chinese folk music into an well-paced and passionate narrative drama. To bring out its full color and texture, Chinese folk musical instruments were brought in. The concerto divides into "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai studying together", "saying goodbye", "Zhu resisting the arranged marriage"), "Liang and Zhu meeting again in Zhu's house, and finaly "Lovers transforming into butterflies". The violinist here is the voice of the young lovers. In neither the Naxos or Marco Polo version could Ms. Nishizaki convey much emotion through her interpretation. Too many details, when emphasized and refined, would have significantly elevated the interpretation, were sadly neglected. The Bratislava Orchestra in the Marco Polo CD did not provide enough support, sounding perfunctory and all too timid. In contrast, the Shanghai orchestra in the Naxos CD did a much better job in maintaining the dialogue with the soloist. As for other pieces played by Nishisaki, I feel that she was competent, but lacked character.
To this date, Ms. Yu Li Na, the first person ever to play the Butterfly concerto, remains its best interpreter. Technically superb, she never let it overshadow the most important elements in the concerto: love, loss, and devotion. And she made it sound SO easy. Her attention to the details was exquisite and gratifying: I feel like I can hear the lovers murmur, the wills clash and butterflies fluttering in the storm. It takes a lot of guts to display such vulnerability and intimacy in her interpretation.
In a recording from the late 50s (which I think is available on cassettes), Ms. Yu also recorded the pieces which Ms. Nishizaki played in the Naxos and Marco Polo CDs. She brought much more vitality and intimacy to her music. You don't just hear the music, you see vivid images and hear laughters and shouts of joy.
I do not usually write such long reviews. But the "Butterfly Lover Concerto" is very close to my heart. Tapes of her music are usually available in Chinese bookstore. I sincerely hope whoever is interested in modern Chinese music also takes the time to discover Ms. Yu.
Best Chinese music of all.......2003-02-03
This is the best Chinese music of all. Also the performer Takako Nishizaki is the top violin performer in Japan. She is also the best of all performers for "Butterfly Lovers". Highly recommended. If you have any thing connected to China or Chinese culture, this is one you must have and love.
Music to swoon dreamily to........2002-04-25
'The Butterfly Lovers' may be the most famous work in the Chinese classical canon, and its narrative may be derived from Chinese folklore, but there is very little Chinese about it. A conventional violin concerto from the softer Romantic spectrum (cf Bruch, Elgar), its broad melodies, spaces for virtuosic solo playing and orchestral development are overlaid with Chinese folk colour, in the same way a Hollywood film set in China might do. It is no more authentically Chinese than Massenet's 'Le Cid' is Spanish, or 'Madama Butterfly' is Japanese.
For the listener, this is a relief. Anyone who has seen 'Farewell My Concubine' will know that native Chinese music, to the uninitiated Western ear, sounds like a lunatic running amok in a kitchen, all clanging percussion and wailing stutters. 'Lovers' tells its love story in unabashed Western romantic colours that paint pictures and stir emotions - even its rhythmic passages are reassuringly familiar.
The other pieces on the CD follow the same pattern, all soupy, dreamy melancholy, all wonderfully touching, strongly evoking natural or communal worlds. Nishizaki is considered the leading interpreter of this music, but it is surely not because she is Asian, but because of her experience in the Romantic violin repertoire, from Beethoven to Brahms to Berg. What IS authentic about this recording is that she is accompanied by the orchestra and conduuctor who gave the piece's premiere in 1959.
Beautiful and what a bargain.......2001-06-11
It's based on a Chinese Romeo and Juliette story and musically is a blend of East and West. I have purchased probably a half a dozen of this CD and given them as gifts--my favorite is as a wedding gift. I have never done this with any other musical piece.

When Jerry's hot, he's on fire, (son)!.......2001-02-20
Jerry's unique style abounds on this generous offering. His infectious "full on" vocals and his lively guitar playing (brilliant picking and warm chords) are to be enjoyed in a wide and well chosen selection of his best songs. From the fast and furious "Devil Went Down To Georgia" to the gentle "Don't It Make You Wanna Go Home" and the gentler "Sweet Memories", he takes you along for a special ride. Songs made famous by other greats such as Presley's "Guitar Man" and "US Male" are given Jerry's special treatment and and sound great. Likewise, Croce's "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and Rogers' "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love...". If you've heard and liked any of Jerry's songs, take a chance with this album - you won't be disappointed.

Not Bad.......2007-07-29
I would class this music as 'Easy Listening'. It is Floyd at the piano with orchestra backing. Floyd Cramer has his own style - the term 'slip-note style' has been used to describe it. I tend to find that after I have heard a whole CD of this style, I get a bit tired of it. It's easier to take when mixed with other artists and other styles. That is what a number of Readers Digest CDs do - Floyd cramer along with such other artists/orchestras as Henry Mancini (one of my favourites), Roger Williams, Romantic Strings, Ronnie Aldrich and others. I hope that I get more used to Floyd's style as time goes on because I think the arrangements are generally very pleasant and it makes for relaxing, easy listening.
The Beautiful Piano.......2003-01-20
I think anyone would appreciate this man's talent. He plays the piano with such emotion especially with the love songs. I am sure this one belongs in your music library!!!
