Minutes to Midnight stands to defend Linkin Park's status as the hardest-rockin' softies in mainstream music. Very good album........2007-08-02

A lot of complaints are being made about this album not being what people wanted out of a Linkin Park album. I can understand that. It is still a very good album. Everything changes. Everything grows and evolves. Few bands can start and end their career using the same sound. Listen to it and appreciate it for what it IS, not what you want it to be.

End of Linkin Park.......2007-08-01

When I first saw that Linkin Park had a new album, I was psyched to get the copy. I bought it at a Target (which only sold it coupled with one of their books) for over $20!! I played it about 3 times and can honestly say if you like the traditional Linkin Park, then you may find 1-2 songs worth while. Other than that, it was like listening to a band that once ruled the metal world for 25 years and now they wanted to do a "personal" album. However, these guys have not been around long enough to claim this type of work. If I could return used CDs, I would have. Not a good buy, save your money for a 1995 Led Zeppelin album.

I understand why die hard Linkin Park fans are flipping out this is a much softer album then they are used to. I think bands should change things up a bit and show their musical range and thats exactly what they did with this album. This was a great album from top to bottom.

Nice and powerful rock songs became a rarity in today's world, dominated by hip-hop and electronic beats with some vulgar lyrical content. Thank God, Nickelback is around to rescue us from this perverse world that we live in today.

"All the Right Reasons" is a long-standing Billboard Top 40 album for almost two years in a row and not by fate. These guys really play good music. They remain consistent to their roots. They are competent musicians. They are one of the few remains of the true rock music spirit with an advantage: these aren't nasty or poser guys.

Honestly, the entire album is a pleasure. Picking one or another song and call it a favorite is just unfair to all of the others. Most records can be described in a few words and have a couple or so of good music. This one is truly an exception - a happy one.

The Creation Of Pop-Metal.......2007-06-15

Nickelback has never failed to amaze me. Even though their newest catalog release has more of a pop essence than their previous attempts, they have managed to do something else: ride the new pop-metal wave. Pop-metal, first created by newer alternative bands such as Seether or Evanescence, has seen it's share of ups and downs. This is most definitely an up. It has amazing riffs, powerful vocals, and an arsenal of great radio tunes. Normally, I don't condone the pop revolution, but in the case of pop-metal, these guys have given it a decent name in recent years. Granted, you eventually get a little worn out by constant airplay, but it never stops me from occasionally popping this disc in my drives and just rocking out. Even the over-played "Rockstar" has it's kicks. Other than that sad attempt known as "Photograph," I can honestly say that every track on this album is worth hearing.

Nine Inch Nails' sixth studio release, Year Zero takes the concept album further than it may have ever gone before. In advance of its release, URLs were hidden in tour t-shirts, music- and image-filled USB drives were 'found' at concerts, and dozens of websites have been packed with conspiracy stories that all involve the year 2022 or 'Year Zero.' Each clue is part of a cohesive whole, requiring a listener to follow an exhaustive web trail to grasp the entire tale. Focusing specifically on the music, "The Beginning of the End," the powerful first vocal track, is like the sonic and lyrical equivalent of an emotional ascension to a rollercoaster's peak, with the last few cacophonic seconds equaling the fall of individual freedoms. "Survivalism," Year Zero's first single, follows with guest vocalist/Slam artist Saul Williams pumping up the passion in its urgent chorus. While still industrial in genre, it's clear that Trent Reznor's musical evolution finds him bringing more mellow songs to the mix than he has on previous discs ("The Good Soldier," "The Greater Good," "In This Twilight") as well as an increased number of funk-affected rhythms, specifically in standout tracks "Capitol G" and "Me, I'm Not." Devotees of NIN's harder sound will appreciate the metallic crunch of "My Violent Heart" and "Meet Your Master." High energy music with powerful lyrics.......2007-08-01

This superb collection of noisy music from NIN really makes your body move while making you think about how government and religion abuse power. Reznor's well crafted lyrics really captures the spirit of the United States today, even though his album claims to be about a time a decade or more in the future. As usual, he pulls no punches when characterizing the attitudes of both presidents and prelates. This disc should be required listening for anyone elected to public office.

If you like NIN, you'll love this new release.

NIN legacy continues.......2007-08-01

A nice new album from NIN. Kind of a mix between old and new. It has definetely a different beat to it...but the classic Trent Reznor lyrics and vocals. Some say that NIN has lost it...I say they just adapt and overcome. They always come out with something that's different than the crap that's already out there now...and they haven't conformed to mainstream junk. If you're a NIN fan, atleast buy it and give it a shot. For me, for just about every NIN album, it took me a couple listening's to start to dig it. At first it's kind of like...what the heck...and once you absorb it all in...it's pretty tight.

THIS IS HORRIBLE!
Remain calm please. I've been a big NIN fan from way back.
This album just proves to me that Trent has lost his spark. Yes, I love a concept album as much as the next guy. But what do you do when every album you release has pretty much THE SAME CONCEPT EVERY TIME!
We all deal with the same fears and concerns that mr. reznor brings up every album. Yes we all feel alienated often, we all feel depressed often, we feel angry often. Is he breaking any new ground lyrically? NO! Has he broken any new ground since The Fragile? NO! I think he has regressed. I believe "With teeth" was a ghastly album. I believe this album is very much a BORING album.
When trent released the song "The perfect drug" I was under the impression that the sky was the limit! I was SO excited about hearing the journey I thought he was going to undertake. On a technical note Trent was a master of innovation in the mid 90's with his GROUNDBREAKING work with the Pro Tools recording system. Some of the layering and effects on "The Fragile" are mind blowing. That's all gone now. "Year zero" is FLAT! Trents so called angst and aggression almost sounds like satire now. Perhaps I'm jaded, but when I listen to his earlier works especially "The fragile" it seems very intense, and urgent, and REAL!
Maybe he realised the limitations of the sound he had a hand in creating. Maybe he just feels that it's asking too much to push the boundaries these days. This is a similar feeling to how I'm feeling about the new Smashing Pumpkins album. Not moved, not excited, not challenged. Nice cover artwork though. That's where my two stars are going.

I'll be brief. Every time I listen to this album is like revisiting the dark side of the US (and the world) in our times: pseudo-religious fascism, jingoism, savage capitalism, the need to belong to something (even if odious). I could go on. Mr. Reznor has given us another masterpiece, full of poignantly insightful lyrics and music that is at the same time beautiful and powerful enough to blast your brain to pieces. I love it.

The only good thing about this CD is the song they play on the radio. Too bad, really.

Latin for "common era," Era Vulgaris holds a pair of common threads with the four Queens of the Stone Age records that preceded it. One, it crosses colossal guitar chords with the most volatile of hard rock melodies. Like most of their albums it took a few listens for me to fully enjoy it. Now this isnt their best effort but its still good. It just didnt hit as hard as their other albums did. It reminds me of Lullabies just because of the fact that it took awhile for me to get into it. If you have never listened to them then I suggest Songs for the Deaf, Rated R, or their Self-titled before this one. If you have those then Id say buy this.

Different style but still awesome.......2007-07-28

This CD is awesome, as are all QOTSA cds, but definitely different. I can't believe it is getting bad reviews because it is a different style, just give it a chance, it takes a few listens to get used to it, but it gets better with each listen. People apparently just wanted this cd to sound exactly like earlier QOTSA releases, but that's one thing I love about QOTSA, is the fact that all the CDs sound different.

So just give it a chance, listen to it more than one time before you decide you hate it. I love this CD, and if you're a QOTSA fan, you probably will too.

Wonderful.......2007-07-26

Queens of the Stone Age is nothing if not consistent when it comes to their musical style (their lineup is a different story all together). From the minute that "Era Vulgaris" kicks in, you know what you're in for, and you get it in spades. Incredibly catchy, somewhat gritty quality, and a just plain groovy mood that gets orchestrated throughout the album's eleven tracks. Witness opener "Turnin' on the Screw" which bleeds into rip-roarers like "Sick, Sick, Sick", "Misfit Love", "Make It Wit Chu", "3's & 7's", the instantly memorable and catchy "Suture Up Your Future", and the excellent closer "Run, Pig, Run". There's not really anything here on "Era Vulgaris" that you haven't heard before from Josh Homme and co., but if you're a longtime fan of the band, this isn't a bad thing one bit. As far as providing more than solid and inventive rock, "Era Vulgaris" delivers in all departments, and is yet again another wonderful entry in what is a very impressive and underrated discography. All in all, whether you're a Queens of the Stone Age fan new or old, "Era Vulgaris" won't disappoint.

A New Era For Queens.......2007-07-21

I've listened to the cd 5 full times and these boys are all over the map.
The biggest thing lacking is the drive on all but one song (sick,sick,sick). The rest is a jumble of misc. garbage. Not worth the price or time and makes lullabies sound like a 5 star album. Maybe the loss of Nick Oliveri is catching up with the band in the song writing department on the second release since his firing.

Losing their edge?.......2007-08-03

Just like everyone else...this album is ayyyight. Nothing new here folks and with Head out of the band and David taking a break...the band is really losing their steam. Here the songs are okay, its good to listen while you're driving but Jon Davis and whatevers left of the crew seem kinda tired. Not to mention now that they're all in their 30's with a family its kinda hard to relate to Jon's lyrics like the good old days. TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR still remains as the worst album they put out. This one is a just a step above it. the KORN i once knew and loved is dead. Say hello to the new "I don't give a sh** anymore!" KORN. This album defintely felt sloppy. But its still a good listen when you want to kill some time.

When Keeping it Real...goes wrong........2007-08-03

Who could've figured that Korn's opening lines to their debut album, "Are You Ready?" would foreshadow for what was to come for their 8th untitled album. Korn has never been a stranger to experimentation from the concept driven Issues to the chorus filled synth tinged Untouchables, they've still somehow always managed to keep a signature sound. The appropriately titled untitled album really shows the band trying to do something new. Unfortunately, this is just another example of when keeping it real goes wrong.

From the online preview of "I Will Protect You" and the lead single "Evolution", I had my fears over what exactly Korn was trying to accomplish. On the Untitled, Korn is too progressive to have signature anthems or catchy choruses, yet it isn't progressive enough to join the ranks of something like The Mars Volta or say Tool. The energy for the most part is absent throughout the album. Its disappointing considering there are some really songs that shine like the pounding "Killing" and "Hold On". The pacing of the album is also something that is really lacking. Korn has always had the ability to pace their albums perfectly. In the middle of the album, the record just drags due to Kiss, Do What They Say, and Ever Be all being around the same mid tempo pace (excluding Ever Be's ending).In fact, dragging would be a perfect one word review for the album.

As a band, the results are very mixed. On one hand, this album does feature Fieldy's finest work yet as a bassist. On the album's more funkier songs, Fieldy's bass playing isn't just slapping and really shows he is on top of his game for this album. This could be due to the addition of Terry Bozzio who adds a real jazzy presence to the album. Terry really shines throughout the album but at times overshines the band. Because of this, Munky really seems like the weak link of the group. His guitar riffs are for the most part pretty bland and not very energetic. Is it just me or does Innocent Bystander's intro straight from the bridge of "Getting Off" from See You on the Other Side. I've always enjoyed Munky's effects use, but I can honestly say I was bored stiff with his effort here. Last but certainly not least, Jonathan's performance is varied shifting from the whiney and unnecessary "B*tch, We Got a Problem" to the emotional "Starting Over". It shows that he is trying to do more with his vocals but i've been more intrigued with previouis efforts.

I want to like this album, I really do. However, I find the album's title to be very similar to the album's sound as a whole. You just don't know how to label it because it seems like a lot of mush. After their Unplugged performance *which was always a lot of hit and miss*, Korn really wanted to aim high for this release. In doing so, they've abandoned a lot of what they stood for. I'm not one of those Korn kids begging for another raw outing like the debut. I just ask that Korn be...Korn.

Korn have been one of my favourite bands for quite some time now. Perhaps they do not mean as much personally to me. I love them more for their origionality and how the fearlessly experiment in their music. This is no exception.

If you are looking for anything like their debut, then look somewhere else. This is probably korn's lightest album to date, however the mind drawing riffs, the hip hop influenced beats and Davis's haunting vocals that almost mock the simple melody he is singing makes the album distinctively their own.

After the intro, Starting over immediately draws you in with its catchy chorus, and is a good demonstrtion of where the album is going because the catchieness, and industrial style gets more extreme in "Bith we got a problem". The choruses are what really makes the album so effective.
Even if you have not already bought the album the single "Evolotion" is probably still in your head. The same is done most notably on "kiss" and "Ever be" While some will call this annoying and label them as commercial sellouts, you can tell just by the lyrics that Korn are still so much more than this.

It also struck me that as korn do not sound as heavy any more, can they still be called nu metal? or are they more of a funk rock band now? As a fan of the Red hot chili peppers, this does not bother me, but as said before, metalheads will not be impressed. However, if you listen with an open mind, you will see that this album does show the talent and raw emotion that Korn have always possessed

This album has to grow on you. When I first listened to it for the first time I wanted to throw it away and forget about it but after listening to it some more it started to grow on me and now i like it very much. so give it a try it wont dissapoint you

How can anyone rate this 4 or 5?.......2007-08-02

I couldn't wait to get this after reading the preview that stated this was the heaviest korn to date by one of the band members. This was the first time I can honestly say that I wasted money on music. I never thought it could be this terrible. The SYOTOS album took a bit of getting used to, but still it was tollerable once you listened to it a few times. On every song it seemed to start out dull and about mid song, just when I thought they were going to pick up, they just stayed the same. I have every Korn song out there, not just holding onto the past, this really sucked!

well here it is i think this album rocks being a huge fan i guess i would but it really is likeable. second i HATE AMAZON! i preordered this album and look two days later i still dont have it. i had to download it because i couldent wait for amazon to send it. that off my chest back to the review the album has this really trippy sound wich i like some lyrics are very catchy overall i fell this album has a much better lasting appeal that syotos. favorite tracks evolution, [...] we got a problem,killing, and innocent bystander. ive been with korn since day one and will continue to truge the long haul! It gets a little old hearing people comparing Korn's new music to their old stuff. Korn have said that in losing 2 members (only 1 perminant), they have changed as a band and in this the music they create. I have been a Korn fan for 10 years now and I have never been disappointed, and I can say this with "Untitled." This new sound is heavier than 2005's See You on the Other Side and resembles 2002's Untouchables. I can listen to this entire album with only skipping one track (Do What They Say). It isn't a horible song, I just don't care for it. Overall, if you are a Korn fan pick this Limited Edition up if you can (it is sold out in most retail stores). Die hard Korn fans should love this album and I cannot wait to see these guys in Orlando.

Disappointed...but still must have for Korn fans..........2007-08-01

I bought the Special Edition CD with DVD, because I love watching behind the scenes videos of the recording process. I also was a little swayed by the free T-shirt offer with this package (by the way it is $10 for shipping and handling which is far from free...the last time is sent a package of this size it cost $.99 for the envelope and $2.10 for the postage).

Be careful when you open the packaging...you could drop the contents easily. There are 3 cards for each of the remaining band members (Brian "Head" Welch left the group before the last CD as he found religion and got clean from drugs, and now David Silveria has had to take a hiatus for surgery to relieve nerve pain in left arm), there is a card with code for free T-shirt, there is a pull out poster, the CD booklet, a cardboard jacket for the CD and another cardboard jacket for the DVD...seems a little much to shuffle through if you just want to grab the CD and play (so if you hate packaging and just want the tunes stick to the jewel case regular CD version). I do have to admit that the artwork with this CD is very cool. I think that is why I spent the extra cash on it.

Now on to the music...this is a different release for Korn. Don't expect to hear the same sounds from See You On The Other Side or Take A Look In The Mirror. This is a less guitar driven album. It is more like Korn meets Pink Floyd and Nine Inch Nails. This album is more processed with keyboards, sound effects, layering sounds, etc. The drums are very different here...some of the tracks were recorded with Terry Bozzio (which is really a treat as he is a great drummer) and some are Jonathan Davis...and I think they had another drummer enlisted to finish off the record. The sound is very dense and melodic, but not as raw and grinding.

It is really different, and that is the key to my disappointment. I am used to loving every song and every sound from Korn as in the past. I love the complex rhythms and sounds that Korn has always produced, but this time around I am not immediately drawn to it.

If you love Korn, then go for it! If you are a casual Korn fan, then listen to sound bites first or borrow from a friend to check it out. I think for me it will take some time and a few more listens to get into this one.

The touring band that they have set for Untitled looks amazing...They have Slipknot's drummer and Sevendust's guitar player to round out the line up...should be good to see live!

.......and then there were three..... a strong 4 1/2 star album.......2007-08-01

If 'See You On The Other Side' was the bridge to get there then 'Untitled' is the other side. Most of the album is filled with artsy experimental music that is truly evolutionary as far as Korn goes. With Head devoting his life to God and David on hiatus all that is left of Korn are Jonathan,Munky,Fieldy. Ofcourse once again the boys from Bakersfield surround themselves with many talented individuals. From the production team of The Matrix to producer Atticus Ross to session drummer Terry Bozzio. Most of the tracks were created all together in the studio with ideas flowing like a geiser. Most of the album comes off noisy but yet clean. But gone is the Korn your grandpa used to listen to. It is less heavier than 'SYOTOS' but flows much better. The continuity is there with tremndous confidence and from track to track it is easy to tell that this is the new Korn for all. Some may like it and some won't. If you are wanting to hear the 'S/T' or 'Life's Peachy' or even 'Take A Look In The Mirror' then go and listen to those albums. But if you enjoyed 'SYOTOS' as much as I did then give this album a try. For it is better than its predecessor......and as far as this Deluxe Limited Edition goes you get a 47 minute DVD documenting the band in the studio and photo slideshow which is cool. Fantastic artwork throughout the package. A bonus track called 'Sing Sorrow' which is a very strong track. Three postcards of each member drawn which is also very cool. A two sided poster of the album art that comes with creases(that sucks) and a coupon to redeem a free t-shirt from the band. Very very cool...and it all comes in a nice hard box. Korn really did a great job with this package. Big props go out to them.....for me the only down side is the unablilty to read the small wavy print in the sleeve.....very difficult to read.

Think Pink Floyd does Heavy Metal.......2007-08-01

I found this album to be very similar to SYOTOS first time around. It does have the 'artsy' sound to it and my first reaction was 'Pink Floyd does Heavy Metal'. Very trippy cd with a mix of melody and goth intertwined in each song. Favorite song on the album after first couple of go rounds has got to be 'Killing'. Very militant and heavy 'old-school' KoRn feel to it and great to jam along with. This album isn't for everyone, and if you didn't really like Issues or SYOTOS, you might not like this one. Every album has a message, and the message delivered in this album is very clear, KoRn hates God and fixed religion. But overall, I give this album a 4 out of 5, just because it had to grow on me after about 4 listens and it just didn't 'grab' me first time around.

This album defines great Rock 'N' Roll music........2007-07-30

In my opinion this album is the greatest Rock 'N' Roll album ever. I strongly recommend you to buy this if your a rock fan, it is a must have. On another note I read some of the 1 star reviews and I urge you to disregard what they have to say for a few reasons. One reason is they put some false facts in their reviews (not all but a few) which clearly shows their lack of knowledge concerning this great rock band. Also I saw some of their other reviews for other cds. They gave 4-5 stars for bands like greenday and I think Beyonce (some crap like that)though their were a few who gave great bands like Metallica 4-5 stars. One more thing is that AC/DC makes great rock music, think about it. Its powerful yet simple and usually about the definitive rock 'N' Roll topics which are women/sex, alcohol, and good times. The songs of Back In Black are great rock songs which many people love, from credible rock/metal musicians to the average person.

I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song). Unfortunately, iTunes doesn't carry any AC/DC songs at the moment.
This CD is perfectly priced. 10 great songs for $10. If you don't already own the CD, the popular songs you'll know are Hells Bells, Back In Black and You Shook Me All Night Long. If you like them, then the rest of the songs on this CD won't take long to grow on you. Especially, Let Me Put My Love Into You. I promise that this CD will not disappoint.
This is one of my three favorite Hard Rock/Heavy Metal albums from the early 1980's. The other two are Judas Priest's "Screaming For Vengeance" and Def Leppard's "Pyromania".

Simply put, THIS is rock and roll!.......2007-07-11

I can't really think of anything too specific to say about "Back in Black". One day, I bought the album, listened to it and had one of the biggest musical joyrides I can recall! Critics may despise AC/DC, but that's no reason to neglect this album! In fact, this qualifies not only as being one of the biggest-selling rock albums of all time, but one of the greatest. That being said, "Back in Black" is probably the first album people will think about whenever AC/DC is mentioned, and while they have a great selection in their catalogue, this is, no doubt, their finest hour.
From the guitar crunch of the Young brothers, from Malcolm's rock-solid rhythm playing to Angus's legendary riffs, licks and solos, this no doubt qualifies as a great guitar album. Then comes in the rhythm section of Cliff Williams on bass and Phil Rudd on drums, and while Phil Rudd may not have the same chops as John Bonham, Phil still makes his drums sound larger than life, which makes for a great cornerstone of the AC/DC groove. And then...Brian Johnson. Who would have thought after such a great lead singer as Bon Scott passed away, Brian Johnson would be able to fill in his role, and fill it in greatly, as well. His voice may take some getting used to, but he definitely sounds best on this album.
In addition, the remastering is excellent. The volume is up and there's no static or unneccesary noise that ruins the sound. After all, there's nothing as disappointing as hearing a great song like it was recorded a mile away! Anyway, this album is just flat-out excellent for those who dig such a sound. Ten songs at a little over forty minutes, and a cross between a hard-rock crunch and an old-school groove for each song, AC/DC did just about everything they could right on this album.
As a summary, this album will make you forget your problems, imagine these guys on stage at night in a big, sold-out arena, playing these rockers loudly and proudly, and, of course, prove to be a testament of time and rock and roll. And remember, take no pressure from the critics. Be your own person! Rock out and feel good about it! And remember, "rock and roll ain't noise pollution...it just makes good, good sense!" Peace!

One of the best CDs ever...REMASTERED.......2007-06-27

I owned an original copy of Back in Black and played it constantly. It's an ideal CD for road trips and just incredible rock from beginning to end. I didn't think anything could possibly improve it until I heard the remastered version. Suddenly the bass comes out more, the drums are even more in your face, the vocals are clearer, it just ROCKS even more. There are plenty of bad remasters out there of various classic albums, but thankfully, this is not one of them.

The rebirth of AC/DC .......2007-05-16

Hands down the best AC/DC CD. This is the cream of the crop, and it doesn't get any better than this. To this day, each song rocks loud and hard, and vocalist Brian Johnson was never better. A must for any hard rock collection, your ears will be bleeding.

Still Dream Theater in the deep.......2007-08-03

First, I am a devoted fan of the band so I may not be as much impartial as I would want to. Still, I think that it is a very good album. Like I read from other review, it is what "Train of Thought" should have been. It is different from other Dream theater albums and definitevely more heavier, but it keeps that prog vibe on the deep. Particularly, I prefer the more prog-melodic style of "Images and Words" and "Scenes From a Memory" and I hope the next album to be a "Metropolis part III", but I still think that "Systematic Chaos" is a very well developed album.

Don't Like As Much As The Last 2, But Still AWESOME!!!!.......2007-07-29

This band still rules!! Just saw them in San Diego on the first nite of the tour.(July 24, 2007) They played every song on this CD. Great stuff!!
I bought the CD that comes with the Bonus DVD. It has all behind the scenes at the recording of this CD. Pretty cool stuff. Portnoy is funny, with his Ali G impersonations. This is a great CD!! A must for all Dream Theater fans.

A Magnum Opus after 20 years of Prog-Metal.......2007-07-26

I have been following DT since 1994 when I was introduced by a friend who played Images and Words in a car ride home from school. That was 13 years ago and DT remains the only band I simply do not get tired of listening to.

They were formed in 1985 and here we stand in the year 2007 and 10 studio albums later with Systematic Chaos which I think is arguably their finest work to date.

Some of their previous releases took a little time invested listening for the tracks to grow on me. They always did and I always grew to love the music. Systematic Chaos stands out for me as a DT album which I LOVED on first listening. I mean I think I nearly blew the speakers out in my house the first time The Dark Eternal Night started piping through my system.

Some standout tracks on Systematic Chaos:

In the Presence of Enemies - Part 1: First track on the album and a great opener for DT as it has a very progressive feel to it with a complicated riff that they play with in several different forms leading up to James LaBrie cutting into vocals at 5:13. For some reason, 'clean and crisp progressive metal' comes to mind when thinking about this track.

Forsaken - Opens with a creepy sounding piano sequence from Jordan Rudess which would find itself at home in a movie like "The Exorcist" and then explodes with the rest of the band playing a variation of that theme. The lyrics are very creative and spell a story of a person being visited at night by a 'forsaken' who tempts the victim to give themselves up. This song has a more ballad type feel and you are tempted to sing along with this one.

The Dark Eternal Night - If In the Presence of Enemies is clean and crisp, then this song is its antithesis sounding grungy and ballsy. It starts with John Petrucci on a seven string guitar playing a filthy riff. The vocals cut in at 1:11 with LaBrie and Portnoy together distorted and angry. This is a song where your volume knob has a mind of its own and speaker companies may make some money in replacement parts. This wouldn't be out of place on a Megadeth album and I think DT may find some new fans with this tune.

A note on the 5.1 mix on the bonus DVD...this isn't just the music cloned on the surround and center speakers. The music has actually been mixed. You will hear panning and splitting of vocals and instruments. The bonus DVD is well worth having if you are fortunate enough to have a surround system.

The documentary on the DVD is the only thing I wasn't entirely happy with. While it was cool to see how the songs take shape, there were a few things that bothered me. For one, if you watch this with a good sounding subwoofer, be ready to turn it down during the interviews with John Petrucci as they were done in a very windy alley and subwoofers will lovingly reproduce all that wind making the interview almost impossible to sit through. The second thing is a bit nitpicky, but I feel they should have future proofed the documentary a little better by filming it in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Widescreen TVs will be ubiquitous in the near future as prices continue to tumble. It would have been nice not having to watch it in pillar box format on my tv.

Most bands don't last 20 years. If they do, they are tired sounding and probably ready to hang it up. DT is in their prime after 2 decades, and if they continue to make albums like this, the fans will respond with good album sales and sold out shows. I hope to see a 30th anniversary tour in the future.

If you are new to DT I can't think of a better way to start than picking up Systematic Chaos

Unlike the promo songs, In the Presence of Enemies (the split-up epic) is the most memorable, magnificient song I know. Repentance has emotive power of a steam roller. I can't get enough of this album.

Four-year career hiatuses followed by sprawling double-albums could spell trouble for a band of the Chili Peppers' stature: consider they'd originally recorded enough for three discs. The restless, trouble-plagued outfit that helped break alternative rock into the mainstream with a potent fusion of punk 'n' funk in the '80s finds itself two decades on almost completely devoid of the former's energetic abandon, while the latter's effusive rhythms are considerably subdued over the course of this two-hour, 28-track collection. It's not so much that the Peppers have lost their muscular, often uber-macho edge as they have willfully tamed it in service of mature reinvention here. The mellower, often introspective, if no less potent pop ethos that characterized the crossover hit "Under the Bridge" blossoms fully here on tracks like disc one's "Snow," "Wet Sand," and the jazz-cool of "Hey."

The title track, "Desecration Smile," and "She Looks To Me" finds them venturing further into laid back pop ballad territory, while the tricky rhythms of "Dani California," "Charlie," and "So Much I" eventually kick into familiar top gear on the pop-savvy "Tell Me Baby" and hip-hop seasoned "Storm in a Teacup." It's not that there's a paucity of musical adventure here ("If" and "Animal Bar" finds them wafting into Floydish neo-psychedelia while "Make You Feel Better" seems to channel no less than Joe Jackson) but that it's delivered with a subtlety--and dare we say it?--tasteful musical restraint that's a stark contrast to the band's early, overly overt nature. There's perhaps too much mid-tempo simmering and reflection going on; like most double-albums it could be focused into a much more compelling single disc. But that seems largely beside the Peppers' hooks-over-histrionics point here: an unlikely record to kick back to, and one that both challenges assumptions and eases the band into middle age with an oft languorous, if undeniably savory groove. --Jerry McCulley

This is coming from someone who music typically runs a short half life.

If you are reading this about this album, and don't yet own it...then do yourself a favor and buy it!

The cynics of this album are the overly-cynical type that find a flaw in just about anything. Do not listen to (the very few) of them.

Snow..the hit from the soundtrack.......2007-07-11

Okay, I am going to review one song, and not the entire album (yeah, yeah. Go ahead with the negative votes). But please read on.

For the past two days I've been listening to one song, Snow, over and over. The cool thing is with iTunes repeat, it's the kind of song that just undulates into highs and lows, mellow and rapping and metal and back to mellow; like it never ends (and by the way, I DON'T do drugs anymore. Just want to clarify).

This is what the Chili Peppers represent to me. They have that definite sound that's been imitated ad-infinitum. But they started that sound (at least for white people) and added the heavy guitars to rapping found only in Run DMC's second hit, Rock Box back in the early 80s. Punk? Yeah. Well, that's just part of their story. Much more multicultural than that.

But what I want to say is, you know how there's that song that represents a certain time in your life? I call them life soundtrack songs. They're powerful and give you goose bumps, and you remember that time when you were, say, just walking down the street, and this beautiful serene rhythm took over from hearing that one song. Two years from now I'll try to recapiture this song's impact, but it will be second hand by then.

So, thank you Chili Peppers, for coming up with what I see as tPart II of that beautiful/desperate epic of pain and resurrection; Under the Bridge. That's when I knew you guys were incredible, and that you'd been there.

You know.

And that it made you better in the long run.

RHCP have been my favorite band for years. As you can imagine I was hungry for their new material. I bought this immediately after it came out and all I can say is WOW! This is, by far, their best work. THey show such a range of musical talent from balladry to hard rock to funk (often in just one song). Even thought it is a double CD set, they have left me craving for more. Let's just say, I have had a year to totally wear it out.

Russel Allen is without a doubt one of the most powerful singers of our times, and Michael Romeo is pure genius in how he has crafted this album and he slays on his guitar! Symphony X Does It Again!.......2007-07-29

It's a great CD. Any Symphony X fan who hasn't picked it up yet should. And kudos to Amazon. When I first received it in the mail, opened the fancy jewel case and no CD was in there! I called customer service and they quickly shipped me another one at no cost to me.

Russell Allen Truly Shines Here.......2007-07-26

It is not hyperbole to declare that 'Paradise Lost' was worth the five-year wait, and nearly a month since I purchased it remains in heavy rotatation on my MP3 player. Few bands have the kind of staying power that allows them to take that amount of time off and still be relevant, or have as loyal a fan base. Then again, Symphony X has always appealed to literary maven in me, from V: The New Mythology Suite, (based on the myth of Atlantis) to The Odyssey (Homer would have loved these guys), and I've adored them not only for making great albums, but for treating the listeners like intelligent human beings.

This is NOT a remake of 'The Odyssey', so don't expect it. 'Paradise Lost' is darker, richer and deeper in tone and texture, including the artwork (which is worth the price alone). From the sweeping 'Oculus Ex Inferni', which opens this grand epic depicting Lucifer's rebellion against God, to the blistering 'Set the World On Fire/The Lie of Lies', to the heartrending Revelation (Divus Ex Pennae Tragoedia), it's cinema of the mind done through music, and what music it is. I do believe that John Milton would indeed be proud.

It seems that most of the reviewers are budding guitar gods, which is why they focus on the almost inhuman stylings of Michael Romeo (and believe me, they ARE simply jaw-dropping--does the guy have extra fingers on his hands?). Me, I'm all about vocals and personally, it's Russell Allen's intensity that really stand out here and showcases his incredible range. For some fans, the heaviness Allen uses here may be somewhat disconcerting, but for the overall theme of the album, it's perfect. While we're not talking unintelligible death-metal growls, it is a much darker and harsher sound. Russell Allen is the ultimate actor, managing to convey the seductive evil of ultimate power. He's both wicked and alluring as he snarls with fiendish venom: "I will forsake you/destroy and unmake you/with all my might/I will take you down..." His delivery reminds me of Jon Oliva's Mephisto from 'Beethoven's Last Night'. Of course, Allen does go softer on such tracks as `Paradise Lost' (my other favourite) and `Revelation' (I love the ending which incorporated melodic lines from Divine Wings of Tragedy--it's a trope that I've noticed most progressive/power metal bands seem to use).

There's nothing else to say except that I truly LOVE this album and can't wait to see them live. This is American Power Metal at its finest!

Update 8/1/07 - In case there are any doubting Tthomases who don't think Russell Allen can reproduce the heaviness on the album live, I saw Symphony X last night at House of Blues and not only was he absolutely PERFECT, he truly set the world (and stage) on fire!!! The band closed with 'The Odyssey' including the orchestration and the crowd went absolutely IN-SANE! I also got to chat with him, Michael Pinella and Michael LePond after the show. All of the guys are truly down to earth and really appreciate their fans. Russell's also really tall and I'm not a short woman by any means (I got a hug too).
