"This studio album captures brilliantly the musicality, the eclecticism and the sheer fun of a Raisin Picker show!"

Product Description
Followers of the band will be delighted to hear "Which Way's The Wind Blowin", a long-time live favorite, open proceedings. Mosher's spirited vocal delivery of this tale of a traveling man is matched by some hot breaks on mandolin, guitar and banjo, and so the direction of the album is pointed. Then two equally impressive originals by Mark Palms follow soon after, the jazzy "Bourbon Street" and the touching narrative ballad "Shiloh's Hill", a tale from the Civil War. While back on a flying visit from New Zealand, James Sneyd (former fiddler) found time to take lead vocal honors on Eric Bogle's "Nobody's Moggy Now". Sneyd was always a larger than life stage presence and few could match his delivery of this hilariously stomach-churning ode to a squashed cat. Mosher's vocals are back to the fore again on the hard-driving, bluegrassy "Gonna Row My Boat", turning in a blinding guitar break for good measure. When they're not writing, they have a talent for choosing some catchy and memorable songs, "The Lady From 29 Palms" and "I'm Helpless". Both enjoy an appropriately whimsical delivery from Carol Palms, the latter with some inventive studio touches as the sound "emerges" from a scratchy old 78. So just as I listened to this CD for the first time and track 12 died away leaving me with a big smile on my face, I realized there was the small matter of the album's title track remaining. "Drivin'" turned out to be a song I had to play again and again, a brilliantly comic, autobiographical three-way dialogue of exactly what it's like getting a band to a gig. This studio album captures brilliantly the musicality, the eclecticism and the sheer fun of a Raisin Picker show!

5 out of 5 stars Rocks today just like it did in the 90's.......2005-12-21

I grew up on this disc. There are albums out there that when you listen to them they take you back. This is it for me. Virtually the whole album is significant. The Innocent and Fly Me Courageous are just about as good as it gets. If you have never heard Drivin' n Cryin', do yourself a favor and at least listen. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars "Mainstream" Rock from dnc.......2005-06-22

dnc's label, Island, pushed Kevn Kinney, et al toward mainstream hard rock with this release, hoping to get a band that would both rock and possess universal appeal through superior, socially-conscious songwriting (like Midnight Oil or late-80s rem). The result is the band's best-selling record, _Fly Me Courageous_. The increased contribution of hard rock guitarist Buren Fowler and the paring down of the softer side of dnc's personality led to a solid rock record which featured memorable, melodic riffs and rock radio tunes such as the title song, "Build a Fire," and "The Innocent." The country-fied "For You" balances the bombast, as does the Petty-esque "Let's Go Dancing," but mostly the band goes for the "Rockin' in the Free World" approach. Producer Geoff Workman (whose credits include Motley Crue) adds considerable polish to the band's sound, but while it almost put them over the top, the record is not quite as unique as their previous two efforts.

4 out of 5 stars Great rock record!.......2004-04-29

This is how rock records should sound - fresh! Listening even today there's no sign of cliches or recycled ideas. It's a great sound - a twinge of the south and a crunch of arena rock blended together.

5 out of 5 stars great cd.......2002-08-05

anyone who thinks that this cd is terrible compared to earlier dnc albums is insane. if all your looking for is the same song structure as everyother previous song, than you should stick with the old ones and not insult an awsome peice of artwork. dnc are probably the best song writters in their genre. this cd just shows more of their flexibility to create great music and not bore the world with new lyrics to the same old songs. this cd is a great change yet keeps with their poetic nature of previous material

4 out of 5 stars Stupid lyrics, great songs.......2002-04-26

The previoulsy mentioned stupid lyrics make no real sense and make recomending this cd a little risky if your friends listen to the words closely. But the cd easily redeems itself with its [good] melodies and gutiar work. Okay it is a little comercial compared to their other cd's but who cares it does rock (just don't try to find inspiration or logic in the lyrics).

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2006-11-06

I first heard the group on a radion station while living in the South and loved the way they sang. When I moved back to the West Coast I decided to buy the CD and love the whole thing.

5 out of 5 stars MYSTERY & WHISPER IN TOP 30 EVER .......2006-07-11

Drivin n Cryin and Led Zeppelin are my two favorite bands ever. Mystery Road & Whisper Tames The Lion are DNC at their best.

This and Whisper include some of the best southern/bluegrass/folk/laid back music on the planet.

All the songs are great! My absolute favorites are:

AIN'T IT STRANGE
TOYS NEVER PLAYED WITH
WILD DOG MOON
PEACEMAKER
MALFUNCTION JUNCTION

5 out of 5 stars Brings back memories.......2006-01-04

This was the current release when dnc played the yearly Winterfest concert at my high school in Chattanooga, TN. That was probably the loudest show hosted at the school up to that point, and one of the biggest names to play one of the Winterfest shows.

I was a sophmore at the time, and found their music to be different than most of what was popular at that point. While it's possible to mindlessly sing along, most of the words of all the dnc songs have some sort of meaning, like the helplessness of an elderly man losing his home in "House For Sale," and pride in Southern scenery found in "Honeysuckle Blue." And who hasn't been drunk and belted along to "Straight To Hell?"

While this album was the current one at the time of the show, the band treated us to some cuts from the soon-to-be-released "Fly Me Courageous."

This album is a good one to look at the band when their reputation was building, and their sound was evolving toward the hard-rock sound that brought them onto MTV.

5 out of 5 stars Classic dnc.......2005-06-22

This record remains the favorite of most dnc fans, since it comes from their most creative and unique period. Continuing the previous record's ("The Whisper Tames the Lion") balancing act between hard rock and folk, "Mystery Road" brings these two aspect's of the band's sound closer together by delving into southern rock--"Toy Never Played With," "Wild Dog Moon," and the anthemic "Honeysuckle Blue"--and by upping the ante on the folk/country side with the top-notch writing (veering from story-song and socio-political rant) of "Ain't it Strange," "With the People," "Peacemaker," and the band's signature song "Straight to Hell," a trash-country sing-along if ever there was one. And I haven't even mentioned "Wild Dog Moon," a "Rocket Queen"-style anthem. In 1989, reviewers were apt to mislabel the band as "southern rock," but it's more than that. If your tastes include Neil Young, Son Volt, or like bands, then you might like "Mystery Road."

3 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Great.......2005-06-10

For the longest time the only DNC album I had was "Fly Me Courageous". This album was so out-
standing I couldn't believe this band wasn't huge. After hearing "Mystery Road" I think I have a
better understanding. This isn't a bad album by any stretch, but it doesnt have the same
infectious grooves as FMC. The best songs on this album can be found on other compilation albums,
most notably, "The Essential Live Drivin N' Cryin" which I own; "Honeysuckle Blue", "Straight To
Hell", "Peacemaker" and "House For Sale" can all be found on the live album in much stronger
form. For the just-curious or beginning DNC fan I would recommend this route.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2006-07-02

I am a new fan to this old band and the music is timeless. Because they are from Georgia and never received national air play, at least not in my home town of Dallas Tx. I never heard of them until I moved to Atlanta. Every track is good and great to jam while on the road or chill to around the house.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music, Weak Packaging.......2005-06-22

While this contains most of the songs that casual fans would consider dnc's best (they were actually selected by the band to please the fans), it's not the most well thought-out greatest hits collection I've ever heard. Heavy on cuts from the most popular records ("Mystery Road" and "Fly Me Courageous") the record nearly skips the last two releases and steers clear of rarities (except for the excessive live version of "Toy Never Played With"), never persuading the first-time listener that dnc was/is a great band by giving a sense of their uniqueness or their trajectory through 15 years (in 2000) of constant touring and recording. Some deep cuts or rarities might have helped with that. Also, I am disappointed with the quality of the mastering. Still, this material roughly coincides with their greatest hits live album and at least touches on all seven studio albums.

4 out of 5 stars Fallen angels and growing up........2003-01-03

To be honest, though I love this band and have met Kevn Kinney a couple times, I only listen to this CD for the first song on it and the last two songs on it. Those songs, particularly "Telling Stories," remind me of what I like about the band. Evocative lyrics, fun if wistful tone and a nice, homegrown acoustic feel to the music. When Drivin N Cryin start to rock out more, though, they lose me. I like it better when it's just the guitars and Kinney's gravelly voice.

4 out of 5 stars Hard Band to Anthologize.......2002-11-21

Drivin'n'Cryin' is one of those bands whose career does not easily lend itself to summarizing, mostly because of their idiosyncratic songwriting and a lack of real hit singles. That said, "Ultimate Collection" does a reasonable job of presenting this quirky band of modern southern rockers in a favorable light. Contemporaries of R.E.M. and the B-52s on the 1980s Athens/Atlanta rock scene, the band's music had of a regional flavor and they carried the torch of southern rock laid down by 1970S luminaries Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers.

Highlights on this package include five tracks (numbers 10-14) from their 1991 breakthrough "Fly Me Courageous," early classics "Honeysuckle Blue" and "Straight to Hell," and later triumphs "Indian Song" and "Telling Stories." As with any band that lacks obvious hits, it is always possible to quibble. Most obviously missing are "Check Your Tears at the Door" from "Whisper Tames the Lion," the lovely ballad "Right Side of Town," from "Wrapped in Sky" and their smokin' version of "Leaving on a Jet Plane" from their final, self-titled album.

Overall, a decent career retrospective from a horribly overlooked band that always deserved a bigger audience.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Cd, But...........2001-05-31

I love Drivin and Cryin. They always have been a southern, gritty, hard rock kind of band. All their songs have great hooks and the lyrics are deep. All the hits are on this one. Build a Fire, Fly Me Courageous, Straight To Hell, HoneySuckle Blue,etc...I would have given this cd 5 stars, but they left out a song that should have been on it. Around the Block Again should have been on there off of Fly Me Courageous. Other then that, its a great cd, and I would recommend it to anyone....

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Sound Track For Race Day.......2003-03-14

This is a must for the CD player while you are sitting in race day traffic. "What Else Would I Do On Sunday" is my favorite, along with the song about Dale, Sr.

Warning -- if you are a fan of the "new age" of NASCAR, this isn't for you. It's country to the core, and respects and honors the sport's "Old Dawgs." If you like Tony Stewart and rap music, buy "Crank It Up."

4 out of 5 stars A Greatest Hits Collection, Live.......2005-06-22

This live album captures most of what dnc is about. Mixing heavy rock with folk/country numbers, like a weird mix of the Dictators and John Denver, Kevn Kinney and his bandmates rip through nearly 20 of their greatest hits, warts and all. The band, with help from Joey Huffman on organ and David Franklin on guitar, is typically rough and spontaneous, delivering blistering versions of classics such as "The Innocent," "Build a Fire," "Straight to Hell" and the great unreleased song "Dirty Angels." The only weakness derives from the track list, which evinces the band's intention in making this a "greatest hits" affair. Some of the songs, such as "Honeysuckle Blue" and "Scarred but Smarter" don't come off very well here, but as "greatest hits" they're indispensable. In short, a less predictable track list featuring more rarities would have made this fan happier. But if you like rough performances from earnest bands or remember fondly waking up with ringing ears, a hangover, and the stale cigarette smoke in your clothes after a night with dnc, you'll like this one.

4 out of 5 stars Fun night at Liz Reeds.......2005-05-31

I worked at Elizabeth reed Music Hall in Macon where some of this album was recorded. In my 5 years of working at this once great venue, Drivin N Cryin was one of my favorite live acts. I miss the band and the venue. ....Im pretty sure I can hear myself yell.."Get used to it!!...Its an awsome disc..just like all their albums are...DC Liz Reeds 08/94 to 10/99

5 out of 5 stars Excellent live album ..........1999-10-21

As a rule, I've eschewed "live" albums. However, my knowledge of DNC's strengths performing live pushed me just enough so that I purchased "Essential Live." I was NOT disappointed. This quite possibly is the best live album I've heard. By "best" I mean that it accurately portrays what it's like to see DNC live. The production is great; and each song warrants playing over and over.

DNC, see you in Murfreesboro, TN, and on Thanksgiving!

5 out of 5 stars Play this one loud on a good sound system, and you're there!.......1999-09-29

This album is second only to seeing DNC live yourself. The quality of recording is excellent, and really captures Kevn Kinney's guitar punch. Finally, an album that totally captures this great rock band's potential. I personally was at the Atlanta show (one of the three represented on this album), and am now ready to see them again ASAP!

5 out of 5 stars This album shows how great DNC is live.......1999-09-28

This Album shows how a Band from Atlanta can really rock at a live venue. I have followed the band for many years now, This is a true album that shows how a great band sounds live without a lot of noise interfearance. Anyone from Atlanta and the south knows the band and has more than likely seen the band before and this album has tracks from all the albums we love. In other words, BUY THIS LIVE ALBUM!

3 out of 5 stars Backs against the wall . . . .......2005-06-22

As mosh-pit success loomed ever closer for dnc, Island Records pushed them into this riff-heavy follow up to regional smash "Fly Me Courageous." The resulting affair continues the trend toward AC/DC-style brain-pounding rock that had begun with "Malfunction Junction" on the "Mystery Road" album. While the band owes debts to the Stooges, the MC5, the Dictators, other heavy bands from the 70s, much of "Smoke" veers too close to the spandex sounds of the 1980s. Tracks such as "She Doesn't Wanna Go" and "1000 Swings" sell the band short of their nouveau-Crazy Horse potential. Only half of the songs, including "Turn it Up or Turn it Off," "What's the Difference," or "Eastern European Carny Man" does the Georgia quartet remind us what kind of band they had been. The album failed to "break" dnc to a nationwide audience, but it did "break" them with Island and with guitarist Buren Fowler. When dnc returned after "Smoke," they steered as far away from the hard rock excesses as possible. For an interesting comparison, listen to frontman Kevn Kinney's 1994 solo album "Down Out Law," which showcases a number of songs squeezed from "Smoke" to make room for more head-banging.

4 out of 5 stars Very Underrated DNC Album.......2005-06-10

I recently purchased this cd through the Amazon marketplace for only a few bucks. It was well worth it. Granted, this album may take a few listens to appreciate, but it is well worth the patience. It is harder rockin' than "Fly Me Courageous". My favorite tracks are "Turn It Up Or Turn It Off", (which I think has some poignant lyrics despite its hard rockin melodies),"Eastern European Carny Man","Whiskey Soul Woman" and the quirky "Patron Lady Beautiful". Definitely worth it if you can get it cheap like I did.

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2004-08-19

This is probably my second favorite D&C album. MYSTERY ROAD is my favorite. If you like heavy guitar riffs, than this album is for you. To me the best tracks are "Back Against The Wall", "Patron Lady Beautiful", "She Doesn't Wanna Go", and "Whiskey Soul Woman". The songwriting may not be the best, but, the guitars really rocks!. So if you like the hard-rocking version of D&C check this album out.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely have a Smoke!.......2002-12-12

Coming off the success of 1990's metallic Fly Me Courageous, which included two FM and MTV hits, Drivin' 'n' Cryin' returned in 1993 with Smoke, another collection of heavy, riff-oriented songs. Although both records were produced and engineered by Geoff Workman, Smoke had a less-polished, raw feel that should have fit right in to the new post-grunge world. But, as they'd done on many prior albums, they (or the label) made a horrible choice for the first single, the uninspired "Turn It Up Or Turn It Off," and the album never took off.

Which is a shame. While not as lyrically strong as prior albums, Smoke still contains some great songs; meaty riffs on insanely heavy opener "Back Against The Wall," the driving title track, the soulful "Whiskey Soul Woman" and Zep-homage "All Around The World."

And while the album is pretty heavy as a whole, fans of the band's lighter (crying) side will find some nice stuff here as well: the haunting dirge "When You Come Back," the wistful feedback of "What's The Difference?" and the slowly building Civil War epic "Patron Lady Beautiful."

Lead singer and songwriter Kevn Kinney has dismissed Smoke as too riff happy, and says he wrote the words to fit the riffs instead of the other way around, but it's still a classic album from one of rock's most underrated bands. Light it up.

2 out of 5 stars "Smoke" Doesn't Catch Fire.......2002-07-15

Quirky southern rockers Drivin'N'Cryin' followed up their best album, 1991's masterpiece "Fly Me Courageous," with the album that is easily their worst. Whereas "Courageous" is loaded with top notch songwriting and killer hooks, "Smoke" is marred by a decided absence of the same. Even when it starts to take off, like on the intermittentaly powerful "Patron Lady Beautiful," or the beautifully accoustic "What's the Difference," inappropriate sonic intrusions mar the groove. It's as if the band deliberately sabotaged their strengths in an effort to avoid merely repeating their past success. The second half is considerably better than the first, and the best song on the disc is rocking "Whiskey Soul Woman."

Overall, a failed effort that marked the beginning of DNC's unfortunate fade into obscurity. At their best, they were a force to be reckoned with.

4 out of 5 stars 80s Indie/College Rock.......2005-06-22

Originally released on an Atlanta punk club's eponymous label--"688 Records"--drivin' n' cryin's debut record is a great example of college rock in the 1980s. While the aesthetic is similar to that of the Replacements, and the whole sounds as though recorded in someone's bathroom, Kinney's remarkably mature writing makes it essential listening for fans of the band or its leader nearly twenty years later. The top cuts include the title song, the punk thrash of "Keys to Me," the Garage/Folk/Psychedelia of "Another Scarlet Butterfly," and the blue-collar anthem, "Stand Up and Fight for It."

5 out of 5 stars Another Virtually Unknown American Band.......2002-03-13

Kevn Kinney creates a landmark 80's, American release. Beautifully crafted, furious tunes that grab you by the scruff of your neck and toss you right into the tumultuous, mid-80's pit of Americountry/Punk-n-roll. If you appreciate bands like The Replacements, X, or Camper Van Beethoven you have to obtain Scarred But Smarter without hesitation. Here's your chance to add an amazing release of yet another virtually unknown American band to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars their best cd that I've heard (I haven't heard ALL of them).......1999-11-07

There have been a few rock bands to come out of the Atlanta area over the years like The Black Crows, R.E.M., and stuff like that, but Drivin' N' Cryin' are definitely Atlanta's best in my opinion. Their sound is a little bit of a mix between alternative and maybe country rock. They're well known in Georgia, but I'm not sure how known they are in the rest of the country, so pick up this cd and give them a try! More than likely, you won't be disappointed.

Album Description

Released in 1967, Red Simpson's Truck Drivin' Fool continued the focus of his debut album: examining the good and the treacherous, the amusing and sobering sides of trucker life. Today, Simpson, considered a Bakersfield legend, continues performing around his hometown.

4 out of 5 stars Truck Drivin' Fool by Red Simpson.......2006-11-10

Continuation of his debut album, so very happy they are in reproduction on CD. Days of a bygone era, where truckers were so admired and Red brings them to life in his music. Get's better the more you listen to it. A classic CD for the country western enthusiast. If you like Junior Brown, you will certainly like this.

4 out of 5 stars Second volume of superb trucker country.......2004-12-25

Simpson's fourth album reverts to the successful trucker-themed concept of his 1966 debut. And much like the debut, his Bakersfield roots shine through in twangy backings that echo the sound coined by his occasional songwriting partner Buck Owens. As on the debut, Simpson sings of the road's hardships in a matter-of-fact manner that works well with his limited range and adds a convincing note of authority.

The album opens with "Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves," Cal Martin's tale of a hard-charging driver on a winding mountain road. Unlike Doye O'Dell's original 1952 waxing, Simpson's is understated, with steel guitar providing the sound a truck hanging on to the curves and an edgy lead guitar to heighten the drama. There's plenty of truckin' lingo (which differs from the kitschy CB buzzwords of 1970s trucker hits) on tunes like "Sleeper, Five-By-Two" and "Jackknife," bringing to mind the mid-60s car-song collaborations of Brian Wilson and Roger Christian.

Though Simpson focuses on the wear-and-tear of the trucker's life on "Born to Be a Trucker" and "Piggyback Blues," there's a lighter, happier side to be found on the Simpson-Owens co-write, "Truck Daddy," and the title track is as contented as a driver on a wide-open road with a full tank of gas. The only real misfire in this collection is a rendition of "A Tombstone Every Mile" whose happy-go-lucky delivery loses the gravity of Dick Curless' original.

Simpson's engaging songs and everyman delivery, his band's twangy arrangements and Ken Nelson's crisp production elevate this far beyond a novelty collection of trucking tunes. Along with Buck Owens classic Capitol albums, this is an essential element of the Bakersfield canon.

5 out of 5 stars Truck Drivin' Genius!!.......2004-08-13

I first heard this in about 1968 when a friend bought a copy - I loved it then & have tried for YEARS to find it.
At last it's re-issued on CD & when it arrived my wife & I played it three times straight off!
It's absolutely wonderful, Red's voice is perfect for this kind of material, his songs are good, & his choice of covers immaculate. The backing on this is perfect Bakersfield, both guitar & steel (musicians uncredited - who are these guys, they're superb!)If you like Country music (before it got sidetracked down a pop alley), you owe it to yourself to get a copy

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Truck Drivin' Psycho!.......2005-01-12

This album is perfect for long, late-night, cross-country drives. Soaring down the highway at 75mph, amped-up on coffee, chain smoking and intermittently pissing in an empty "big mouth" Mt. Dew bottle; this is the perfect up-tempo CD to keep you awake and haulin' ass at 4:00 a.m.

Not only does Goad croon like the dreamy masculine heartthrobs of yesteryear, but the geetar pickin' is wicked, and it's damn near impossible not to tap one's foot to the beat or bob one's head along with the infectious basslines. Dig it!

5 out of 5 stars Ballads from the Redneck Manifesto.......2004-12-21

Jim Goad puts the mic where his mouth is. This seems like a reasonable thing to do, but when you're an infamous journalist it's a bit of a novelty. Luckily the author of The Redneck Manifesto pulls off this collection of convoy tunes.

5 out of 5 stars RED SOVINE, STEP ASIDE!.......2004-11-11

If you're a stranger to trucker music, or have maybe only heard Red Sovine or "convoy", you're in for a treat with this album. Big Red has chosen the very best of the best trucker songs, rockin' boppin' ditties that will leave you longing for the open road. Songs about Americas unsung heroes, the pill-popping, coffee chugging MEN who make it all happen. This ain't for no three legged beavers, Good Buddy!

The unfairness of it all. For better than a decade DNC had pursued a recklessly idiosyncratic set of conflicting impulses, equal parts metal, southern rock, bluegrass, whatever. Made no sense, but they came gloriously close to pulling it off. Finally, with Wrapped in the Sky and (briefly) a new label, they concentrated on a smaller palette of musical colors and produced their finest, most coherent album. Nobody much cared. Kevin Kinney has evolved into a fine singer and songwriter (with two splendid solo albums), a curious synthesis of everything on Georgia radio while he grew up. Bent to their task, DNC choogle and bounce and languish in the shade, gracefully framing Kinney's songs. The result is a classic, durable, proud record, and all the more so for its comparative obscurity. --Grant Alden

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Back from the hinterlands . . ........2005-06-22

"Back from the hinterlands" of spandex rock, dnc delivers the goods on this under-appreciated 1995 album. Produced by ex-Smiths' knob-twister John Porter, dnc largely avoids balls-to-the-wall, Marshall-at-11 crunch on this record. While they erred on the side of caution here, sometimes allowing a flatness to creep onto the tape, this is one of Kevn Kinney and his mates' strongest collection of songs. The folk/psychedelia of "Wrapped in Sky" showcases such standouts as "(covered by an) Underground Umbrella," "Indian Song," "Telling Stories," and the title track. Mostly about growing up, and mostly revealing Kinney's Patti Smith influence at its height, "Wrapped in Sky" was shamefully under-promoted by Geffen and failed to capture the public's ear. If you like laid-back, psychedelic folk-rock, however, you will like this record.

5 out of 5 stars perfect title for a close-to-perfect album.......2004-07-12

i hate to give this five stars, because it isn't perfect, but i like it more than four stars, so there you go. i believe it's the band's most successful album by far. and a surprisingly experimental and emotionally comfortable record at that. "right side of town" may be my favorite drivin' n cryin' song of all, and the experimental "underground umbrella"--as strange as it is--works surprisingly well.

4 out of 5 stars A Fine Comeback.......2002-11-05

Drivin'n'Cryin made a play for arena rock stardom with their 1993 album "Smoke," and fell flat on their faces, ending up with the worst album of their careers. Fortunately, they then chucked the excessive guitar jamming and returned to their strengths for "Wrapped in Sky." Unfortunately, the album tanked commercially.

Nevertheless, "Wrapped" challenges 1991's "Fly Me Courageous" as D'n'C's best album. Sonically, it is also the most diverse, with elements of Latin music thrown in on "Seniorita Louise" and "Pura Vida," for example. But its the typically idiosyncratic songwriting that really puts the album over the top. "Right Side of Town" is perhaps the band's best ever ballad, while "Indian Song" is social commentary sands heavy-handedness. Other first rate songs include the midtempo tracks "Telling Stories" and "Saving Grace," as well as the excellent closing title track. Only "Underground Umbrella" sounds like an unfortunate outtake from the previous album.

Overall, an excellent final album from the band that kept the torch of Southern rock burning in the 1980s and 90s.

4 out of 5 stars Playin' n' savin'.......2001-05-26

I got this CD off the 1.99 rack. What a bargain! DNC have always been pretty much unknown and I have to admit I only discovered them myself last year when I purchased this CD. Wrapped in Sky is pretty mellow, good for listening to as background music while you're busy doing something else. Most of the songs don't stand out by themselves, but as a comprehensive collection are pretty impressive. The comical Senorita Louise (is insane) is my personal favorite.

5 out of 5 stars You're my saving grace..........1999-10-15

This is, quite simply, the most beautiful album of a decade not known for beautiful music. Drivin' N' Cryin' by now knows the score, and they are not bitter. They sound grateful here. Grateful for life, liberty and time in the recording studio. Not a wasted moment on this CD. Every song shows the development of Kinney's songwriting and the group's understanding of the power of the material. It would be unfair to point out a single song on this collection, as it breathes as one cohesive unit. This album is alive with a rainbow of characters, situations and emotions. Kids: you wanna grow up to be a good person? Get this album.
