Spritely and sweet-natured, richly tuneful, lyrically playful and comforting. That's the like-no-other Groovelily in a nutshell.

5 out of 5 stars Are We There Yet.......2005-11-30

They certainly are THERE! You can't squeeze Groovelily into any conventional box. They are outside of the box and they are AWESOME!! They are the best new music I've heard in a very long time. It is electrifying and energetic. You can hardly sit still and you certainly can not be depressed when listening to one of their albums.

    5 out of 5 stars A gem!.......2005-04-12

This is a wonderful disc! I saw this band about a month ago, and listened to the disc for three weeks straight in my car. I thought I ought to go back to my other music, but I keep returning to this disc.

The musical styles vary from song to song, but the musicianship is rock-solid and always on target. The lyrics are smart, clever, and evocative. Although the songs vary widely in subject, they are connected by themes of love, longing, and their resulting journeys.

This disc, along with "Striking 12", Groovelily's new musical, attests to the promise of this band. Great, substantial music!

5 out of 5 stars I love this group. .......2005-03-25

Particularly for music lovers, GrooveLily knows how to bring unique songs to their highest level of beauty.

Apocalyptic Love Song is a can't-be-missed rock and roll extravaganza. I'd put it up there with Hendrix. No Room in Your Bag is extraordinary in its music and its lyrics. Diva Girl and Happy, Happy, Happy are satirical, funny, well-composed pieces about current American ways of thinking. All in all, every song is worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars There's No Room in Your E-Shopping Cart for Regret, Try This.......2005-03-25

GrooveLily rocks and this album is no exception. It is possibly the best of their discography to date. Check out "Apocalyptic Love Song (I Don't Care)" for a passionate rocked-out ballad. For something funny try Gene Lewin's self-penned "Diva Girl". Be challenged into action by "No Room In Your Bag" both written and sung by Brendan Milburn.

"Are We There Yet" includes songs honed by live performance and refined by the recording process. This is a quality independent album. The music is refreshingly mature with many layers to appreciate over repeated listening. At the same time it is also fun and lively with an internal energy to grab the listener. Try it out today, you'll be back for more tomorrow.

5 out of 5 stars You've got to see this band.......2005-03-17

Simply a superb album. The lyrics are intelligent, the musicianship faultless, and the singing powerful. If you can't feel the tugging during "Apocalyptic Love Song" or during "All I Want Is What I Do Not Have", have them pull the sheet over your head. A perfect conjunction of pop, rock, and a touch of jazz. The only thing better is to see them live, and experience their "Quality Music Revolution" for yourself.

John Reuben's freshman release Are We There Yet? contains the seeds of creative virtue. Intriguing the ear from the beginning, the stylized mix of drums, guitars, background vocals, and electronic textures is the source of this CD's originality. For being in his early 20s, Reuben has a lot to say. He delivers both serious and humorous commentary on the typical issues of the struggle, growth, and victory in a Christian life. The majority of this project takes on an easygoing dance style of hip-hop. Occasionally, when the subject matter requires some aggression, Reuben pushes his voice toward an in-your-face rap-core expression. But no matter what the mood is, the fun hits the roof as Reuben tears through these songs. A guest appearance on "God Is Love" by DC Talk's Toby McKeehan makes this effort a sure hit. --Israel Button

      5 out of 5 stars yeah!.......2007-04-10

This is the best Reuben album. In my opinion, his music started out great with this CD, but went pretty much downhill from there. Actually, I stopped buying them after Professional Rapper, which was only OK, and I really regretted that because I had a lot of respect for him after his first and second. Bring it back to HERE, man!

4 out of 5 stars this is one sweet cd.......2005-07-14

this cd isn't quite as good as hinsight and pro rapper, but this was extremely good for a first cd. this cd never gets old and it's awesome, and if u have any other john reu cd's and like em u MUST HAVE THIS ONE TOO!!!!!!!!

all his songs are good. if ya dont like the music you will like the lyrics and the same the other way around. good "christian eminem" alternative. hes got talent. ive seen him live twice...whos that knockin! whoa! la dadada dadatda! im john reuben on behalf!

5 out of 5 stars John Reuben- Unusual but he rocks!.......2004-06-29

Unfortunately, "Are we There Yet" is the only John Reuben CD I own, but it stinkin' rocks. Its really hard to decide on a favorite song...and when a CD does that to you...its a good sign. My three favorite are "Divine Inspiration", "Him, Her, He or She", and "Ego". They are so... I don't know... exciting and snappy they just rock. And you can totally tell then John Reuben is a Christian artist, because he never says anything rude or crass and, though some of his music might lean towards a hint of self praise, he still rocks... in short I guess I'm trying to say he is the best Christian rapper in the business... and he could kick Eminem's butt anyday.

5 out of 5 stars john reu rocks!!.......2004-01-26

This is definately John's best CD of his 3. You just don't get tired of listening to it!! I used to hate rap with a passion, but now John Reuben is my one exception! It's fun music, and God is Love is an incredible spiritual for me. Buy it, and you'll be glad you did!

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine

          Customer Reviews:

          3 out of 5 stars A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27

Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barker's Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasn't a large italianate soprano; the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.

She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.

Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.

This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.

This is thoughtful music making from two talented composers, playing together on a European concert tour without the distractions of horns and drums and developing a rare intimacy in the process. Carla Bley plays piano with a Monkish deliberateness, a depth of attention to structure that leaves nothing out, and she's finding new dimensions in some of her strongest material. "King Korn" first appeared on a Paul Bley record in 1962 (with Swallow playing bass), but Carla's playing here emphasizes its potential for swing. She once orchestrated Kurt Weill's "Lost in the Stars" as a feature for altoist Phil Woods, but it becomes a much more personal statement here, as does "Musique Mecanique," a witty suite that sometimes mocks mechanical repetition, which was first recorded by her big band in the 1970s. Swallow's "A Dog's Life" is a blues played with such purity it invokes Jelly Roll Morton, and "Playing with Water" is a memorable original ballad. Swallow's electric bass playing is always remarkable. He's long been able to match the grain and nuance of an acoustic, but here he's opted for an instrument that also moves easily into the guitar range. He actually sounds like a guitar--playing melodies and solos with a flow and clarity that can suggest Jim Hall. This is warm, reflective music, etched with rare wit and lyricism. --Stuart Broomer
