The last time Bruce Springsteen gave up E Street for Folk Street, the band of fiddles, banjos, and accordions--sans audience--was recording 2006's We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions in the informality of his living room. This time the Boss takes his American-music foray to Ireland for a three-night stint on the north quay of Dublin's River Liffey. The 23 songs drawn from those performances cover most of the songs from the Pete Seeger tribute, but venture drastically into Springsteen's popular back catalog ("Atlantic City," "Highway Patrolman," "Blinded By the Light") while delving further into his affinity for multiple styles of music, from folk and blues to gospel and country. "If I Should Fall Behind" plays like a tear-jerking last call in a dimly lit pub. "Open All Night" has been shaped into pure swing, complete with pedal steel and sax. And "Jesse James," with its furious banjo, spectator handclaps, and Springsteen howl, could pass for the Pogues, circa 1985. A simultaneously released DVD uses nine cameras to capture every sweat-beaded highlight, from the tin whistle of "Further Up the Road" to an arena bursting out in a "We Shall Overcome" singalong. --Scott Holter

Sinking Down.......2007-07-29
Bruce continues on his road to irrelevance. The further he gets away from his roots, New Jersey, etc. the less he is worth spending time with. He seems to want to be the bard of the new left, to take residence in pretention row. Come back to Wildewood!
The Boss is the Best !.......2007-07-29
Unbelievably great, this CD is the best thing he has ever done. And it even includes the song I now want played at my funeral,"Further on up the road".I wish I had been there!
Great fun with something to think about.......2007-07-28
Bruce Springsteen with the Sessions; Band Live In Dublin.
If you were lucky enough to see Bruce on this tour you have an idea how fun this Cd is. Like any great artists Springsteen can give you something fun with a little extra to think about. In some cases as with Born In The USA most listeners didn't understand what he was saying at all. I saw Sting a fews years back and he mentioned his dismay at how people have interpreted Every Breath You Take as a love song and some couples were actually using it as a wedding song.
The Dublin Sessions is a 2 disc set filled with many of the folk songs from the Seeger Sessions, full of defiance, perseverance and struggle. The hole CD is reminiscent of a John Steinbeck novel. Somehow Springsteen takes all this heaviness and makes it fun to listen to. The live shows were great fun filled with that tinge in the back of your mind reminding you about the horrors of war and the plight of the common man.
I had wondered why Bruce had decided to record the concert in Dublin. I thought maybe he was continuing his trip around the world, Asbury Park, E Street, Nebraska, USA and Dublin. When I heard Mrs. McGrath I knew in an instant why he picked Dublin and it was a great choice.
Some of the best parts of this CD are of Springsteen's own tunes recorded live with the "Sessions Band" Atlantic City, Gowin' Up and Blinded By The Light all have a fresh and unusual that you should find exciting.
Live In Dublin.
Obviously, he was having a good time.......2007-07-22
I almost didn't buy "Live in Dublin" because it contained several songs I already had on "We Shall Overcome." However, due to the fact that my daughter gave me a gift certificate for my birthday and the price was right ($11.99), I felt I had nothing to lose.
Clearly, The Boss was having a good time in Dublin. His voice cracks, croaks and groans at times, but it's still vintage Springsteen. The backup band is outstanding. Normally, you couldn't mix bluegrass fiddles with a horn section on a single recording. But somehow, they pull it off - and it sounds great.
He also completely rearranges "Atlantic City" and "Blinded By the Light" to the point where they're all new songs. You have to play the haunting "When the Saints Go Marching In" a few times to enjoy it.
My personal favorites are "Long Time Coming" and "Further Down the Road," although there are only a few songs that I consider filler crap.
Crank it up. It's summer. It's definitely Springsteen.
Powerful, raucous, joyful, heartbreaking.......2007-07-13
I'll echo the other reviewers and say that this is undoubtedly the best live CD I've ever heard, a testament to a combination of the music, lyrics, players, and timeliness of the message.
Springsteen is almost impossible to review, but I'll just say that, as much as I loved the Rising, Live in Barcelona, and Devils and Dust, the Seeger Sessions and this live album have taken him into a musical stratosphere that maybe only Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson can touch -- pure Americana.
Most of the other reviewers have adequately pointed out the highlights, but I'll say that the mournful dirge that the band transformed "When the Saints Come Marching In" to made tears stream down my face when I first heard this version, especially as it comes in the set after "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live". Folk music is as relevant as it ever was.
If you like any strain of Americana roots music -- blues, folk, jazz, gospel, Western swing, roots country, mountain/Scots/Irish music -- this concert will blow you away and make you sing with the crowd.

If John Mayer has ants in his pants--and, given his many projects and the amount of music he releases in any given year, it appears that he does--his fans aren't complaining. Nor should they be. The Village Sessions, a six-song EP that retools favorites from Mayer's highly regarded Continuum disc, is mostly a way to feel further connected to him; the hurt comes through on "In Repair" both vocally and via expressive acoustic guitar work, making the Continuum version sound clipped by comparison, and the kicked-back version of "Good Love Is on the Way" (the one song here not from Continuum, but from Try!, a 2005 live disc) dispenses with angst in favor of a more liquid groove. Overall, it's a study in intimacy and focus--for Mayer, there seems to be a certain magic within the four walls of L.A.'s Village Recorder, where he laid down these tracks. Then again, maybe not: Prolific as he is, Mayer is no wand-waver. His reputation for musical pureness proceeds him, and The Village Sessions is one more testament to it. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:
The Village Sessions.......2007-07-13
Excellent, John Mayer at his best in acoustic. The songs, most of which are from Continuum are rich and very different in acoustic. Some are almost unrecognizable like they are being played on a different instrument altogether. Very good music from a John Mayer fan.
Slow dancing in a burning room.......2007-06-06
this is a must have for JM fans I'm listening to it right now. I did like "Slow dancing in a burning room" from Continum but this version for some resaon blows it out of the water I can't get enough of this song!!!
Nice to see talent in today's music scene.......2007-05-24
I must admit that when John first appeared with album # 1 a few years back I said to myself "here we go again, another pretty boy with no musical substance". Since then, I have been proven wrong and become a fan. In addition, I must applaud him for being so ambitious. He's released alot of music and covered alot of ground in 5 years. Although I wasn't crazy about the trio record (he ain't Hendrix or SRV even though he is a huge fan of both), the Continuum album really brought me around. Most of the songs are on the mellow side but still are great! This EP contains acoustic stripped down versions of some of those songs and is priced well so I would advise anyone who likes his current album to pick this up as a companion piece.
The Village Mayor.......2007-05-16
There is an apparent transition from the old John Mayer to the new artist that he is becoming. There are a couple of songs that definitely focus on his relationships, but there are also a couple that focus more on his world view and his stance on the current political situation. All of this is wrapped up in his solid musical skills. Ben Harper even makes a guest appearance on these recordings, making this a true underground masterpiece.
Good John Mayer.......2007-05-12
I am not particularly a fan of the live recordings. The people screaming in the background accompanied with hard to hear music is not something I like to subscribe to, but this CD is better than the average live recording. I don't know if it is because it is from a smaller venue or what, but Village Sessions really shines through. Being an acoustic guitar fan, it is nice to hear some of my favorite newer Mayer songs in the acoustic format on this disc.
I liked this CD better than As/Is just because the quality was better (in my opinion.) If you are a John Mayer fan this is a must have, especially for the price!

The premise was simple. Bruce Springsteen invites a dozen or so New York City musicians--packing banjos, fiddles, accordions and the like--to his New Jersey farmhouse for a three-day hootenanny, and tape is rolling. The results are sublime, his 21st album featuring their versions of songs harvested from Springsteen's dog-eared LPs by Pete Seeger. Not all written by Seeger, the songs are how the American folk icon interpreted them, and these organic recordings, with no rehearsals or overdubs, pay tribute with the simplicity and spontaneity he intended. It's not hard to link Springsteen's dissatisfaction with American politics to the protest song "We Shall Overcome" or even the Irish ballad "Mrs. McGrath," where he alters the lyrics to read, "I'd rather have my son as he used to be/Than the King of America and his whole navy." But the beauty of these Seeger Sessions are pieces that underscore the mood of the bandleader, which borders on down-home amusement: the bluegrass outlaw ballad "Jesse James," the Dylanesque "Pay Me My Money Down" and the euphoric "Jacob's Ladder," a gumbo-and-whiskey-fueled romp that could pass for the closing hymn at the Church of Asbury Park. --Scott Holter

Customer Reviews:
Springsteen's best album ever.......2007-07-17
When this album first came out I listened to it non-stop. My favorite track: "Oh, Mary, Don't You Weep." I went to see the band when they toured to promote the album in the spring of '06. Wow. There were something like 15 musicians on the stage and their passion was palpaple. This comes through in the album, too, which was recorded live.
Get American Land Edition.......2007-07-16
This is a great album, but notwithstanding the reviews written here, you should get the American Land version of this album (We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions - American Land Edition). It has all the same songs, plus four more tracks on the audio CD, including "American Land" which is one of the best songs he's done in years. There are also several additional videos. Unlike this version, the American Land edition is not a dualdisc; instread it consists of an audio CD and a DVD disc.
Buy the American Land edition instead (ASIN: B000GG4XJM).
Great fun, don't be turned off.......2007-07-08
I'm a guy with some pretty diverse musical tastes, but quite honestly, I probably never would have gotten into Pete Seeger's brand of country-folk music on my own. But as a lifelong Springsteen die-hard, I put aside any skepticism I might have had and bought the "We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions" DualDisc. As his career progresses, Bruce Springsteen is a constantly changing artist, and he is always drawing influences from new and different sources. But this album is definitely different from any project he's ever done before. The banjoes, accordions, and twangy fiddles might put off some listeners at first, but give it a chance. You'll actually find that this stuff has a lot of similarities to classic rock, with the catchy hooks, instrumental solos, and song structures. Songs like "Old Dan Tucker," "Jesse James," and "Pay Me My Money Down" are upbeat, totally fun tracks. There's a few songs worth skipping on the tracklist, but overall, "We Shall Overcome" is a fun listen of folk standards and covers. I challenge Springsteen fans to go into this album with an open mind, and I think they'll enjoy it just as I have.
Lame Record of Lame Songs.......2007-06-26
If I had a hammer
I'd hammer on the hippies
I'd hammer on some commies
All over this land
I'd hammer on the peaceniks
I'd hammer on lame Jerseyites
I'd hammer out all the rotten filthy dirty draft dodgers
All over this land
Folk Can Rock.......2007-06-19
This is a fantastic album. High energy folk must suits Bruce's style so well; I can't imagine that there's anyone out there who can resist the infectious energy of this well-crafted album. This is a must-listen for those who think that folk is a quiet, downer form of music; these songs will get them out of their seats and up on their feet.
It's really one of Bruce's best albums ever.

Not every 16-year-old white, English girl can hang with the likes of Betty Wright ("Clean Up Woman") and Angie Stone. Joss Stone (no relation), however, is blessed with a strong voice and a will to sing old-school soul. This debut CD is worthy of more than novelty status, though. Wisely avoiding iconic songs by the genre's biggest names, Stone and a production team that includes Wright opt for lesser-known tunes more often by the likes of Laura Lee, Joe Simon, and the Soul Brothers Six--not to mention their digging out (with guest co-producer ?uestlove from the Roots) the great soul lyric in the White Stripes' "Fell in Love with a (Boy)." Joss Stone occasionally misses a connection; her "Some Kind of Wonderful" is listless, and when she develops a bit more subtlety, it'll be welcome. But The Soul Sessions has a spark beyond the album's obvious good taste. --Rickey Wright

Skill way beyond her years.......2007-05-31
I am a Joss Stone fan. I didn't purchase her first two albums until recently, after buying her current release. To hear her voice and the feeling she adds to the old soul covers on this album makes you think she came up in the 60's or 70's.
The guidance of Betty Wright (The Clean-Up Woman) can be heard throughout the album, particularly on Super Duper Love. Her rendition of For The Love of You is something made for candlelight and wine. All in all this was one hell of a debut album. Please check out her other releases to notice her development.
The real deal!.......2007-01-17
I've been a longtime fan of this wonderfully talented Brit for some time now, and have reviewed her album of original material but have as of yet to write my thoughts down for her debut cover album. First of all, before one can even say a word about her musical selection one must mention the fact that this young girl was merely 16 when recording this album so when one first hears the maturity and sincerity in her voice from the start there's an extra layer of admiration for this talented artist. She's not some manufactured beauty displayed in navel bearing shirts and hip-hugging jeans in order to send teen boys into overdrive and teen girls into frenzy but has no actual talent besides the ability to act ten years older than she should.
No, Joss actually has the vocals, the devotion and the maturity to outsing and outperform some of the more powerful voices in the music industry today. Oh yeah, and she is utterly gorgeous, but that my friends is just a perk! `The Chokin Kind' and `Fell in Love With a Boy' are two standouts from the get-go, but she shines on every track here. `Dirty Man' retains all the greatness of the original while `Super Duper Love' seems to surpass its predecessor. This is highly recommended, but if you want a real treat pick up `Mind, Body & Soul' for it showcases everything that makes this genuine talent so utterly brilliant!
Relaxing.......2007-01-12
I cannot say enough good things about Joss Stone. To be so young and to have such a soulfull voice...
Too Raw?.......2006-08-07
I enjoyed this CD, BUT because of her raw sound...sometimes the throaty breathing/rasps do rub the wrong way and if you have the volume up way loud (like I usually do with this quality of voice), you can occasionally hear her smacking, maybe before she takes a breath...it's slightly unnerving. I'm looking forward to more albums to come though!
She's Fantastic! .......2006-06-14
I can't believe some of the reviews here. When I first heard Joss I was blown away by her beautiful, soulful voice. I don't hear anything screetching about it at all and in fact it is very smooth. I also don't think she is trying to imitate anyone. She's got her own style and she's is better than anyone out there right now in my opinion. Certainly much, much better than Brittany Spears who I believe has very little talent and her voice sounds tinny and immature. Also, I don't care if Joss is black or white. She's extremely talented....period. I have this CD and Mind Body & Soul. I listen to them over and over again and I can't wait until she comes out with a new CD.

Frequently bootlegged and now digitally remastered by Jimmy Page, these tapes capture a 25-month (1969 to 1971) arc in which Zep's sound grew to encompass the speed rush and jazz/blues festival stuff of their 1969 debut, the fully developed folkie musings of "Going to California" (in which Plant vowed to make a hejira right up to Joni Mitchell's front door), and the band's modestly popular multilayered epic "Stairway to Heaven." The Sessions also give a glimpse of nearly off-the-cuff invention in an intense take on Robert Johnson's "Traveling Riverside Blues." Most other white blues musicians would've rushed to get this on vinyl; Page and Plant instead used it for parts, most notably taking its profound acoustic freneticism for Led Zeppelin III. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Very please to hear this release.......2007-07-29
I was very please to hear this double cd which include classics of the band. It is really cool to hear other versions of theses songs.
My choices of highlights would be "You shook me", "I can't quit you baby", "What is and what shoud never be", "Hearthbreaker", "Since I've been loving you", "Black dog", "Stairway to heaven", "Going to California" and "Thank you". At last, we have these precious recording of the band with a good sound.
5 Stars Times 2.......2007-07-23
If you love Zep you are in one of two catagories of people. Those who own this and those who need to buy this. Even if you own the complete studio works you still need this to make your collection complete. Jimmy's work isn't recorded onto CD...It's BURNED into it.
Early Zep In All It's Glory.......2007-06-27
This album is so damned good, the musical highlights keep topping each other. First of all I feel the version of the immortal Stairway To Heaven is the greatest all time recorded version I have heard. It is a slightly more muscular yet no less graceful version than the original studio recording and is sans Plant's silly "anyone remember laughter?" ad lib from other live versions. The Whole Lotta Love medley towards the end of side two encompasses John Lee Hooker and Elvis songs and is drop dead brilliant. Going To California and That's the Way beautifully demonstrate their softer side and Page pulls out all the stops on an almost 20 minute version of Dazed And Confused, complete with dive bomb guitar effects and his mad magician touch on the theremin. Since I've Been Loving You is appropriately majestic and the album closes with a warm, incandescent performance of Thank You. My only complaint is no less than 5 songs are duplicated here, although sometimes in much different arrangements. But this is such a petty complaint as this album is a real treat in every way.
Classice Early Led Zepplin.......2007-06-24
This CD is a must have for any Zepplin fan. I do not think that there is any better Zepplin album which demonstrates the improvisational attitude the band had in its early years. With 3 versions of "Communication Breakdown" and 2 versions of "Dazed and Confused", this CD offers a unique opportunity to listen to songs with radically different sounds yet still be the same. For me the almost 14 minute version of "Whole Lotta Love", with a "Boogie Chillun", "Fixin to Die", "That's Alright Mama", "A Mess of Blues" medley in the middle, makes the entire compilation priceless. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
Awsome CD! .......2007-03-25
Really good CD. If your a fan of Zepplin then this is a must own. Remarkable clarity and a different twist to some of the great songs they are known for.

Springsteen Loves Making Music And It Shows Here.......2007-07-26
This CD/DVD combo records Springsteen's tour in support of his album, The Seeger Sessions.
Springsteen tours with a 13-piece band including banjos, accordions, tin whistles, and occasional E-Street fiddler Soozie Tyrell,
The result is a romp through much of the Seeger Sessions album along with some radical reinventions of Springsteen's own material, all performed in front of a super-hot crowd at the Point Theater in Dublin, Ireland.
The crowd starts singing the opening chorus of "Old Dan Tucker" and they go absolutely nuts for the Irish sound of "American Land". In between, Bruce turns "Open All Night" into a raucous big band swing number. He turns the rocker "Further On Up the Road" into gospel and transforms "If I Should Fall Behind" (our wedding song!) into a waltz.
"Growin' Up", "Atlantic City", and "Blinded By the Light" also get new arrangements, and Springsteen sings a straightforward and powerful version of his rarity "Highway Patrolman".
He sings songs from the Depression era such as "Jesse James" and "My Oklahoma Home" and then reworks the lyrics to the 1929 Blind Alfred Reed song "How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live?" into a scathing condemnation of the US government's handling of Hurricane Katrina. A slowed-down "When the Saints Go Marching In" later in the show also evokes the Big Easy.
One of the oddest surprises in the mix is "Love of the Common People", a minor hit for Paul Young in the '80s that Springsteen does pretty much straight-up.
The video is technically excellent. The only thing it adds that isn't on the audio CDs is am impromptu backstage jam of "Cadillac Ranch" as the credits roll.
What I enjoyed most about this album is how much fun Bruce and his band are having. This is a performance by musicians who have a great love of making music and it truly shows.

Springsteen in Dublin.......2007-07-03
This dual disc package (DVD & CD) is an excellent way to get a real feel for what this show in Dublin must have been like. The Boss was energetic and you could tell that he had a lot of fun with this project. The music is fun, yet serious, and so much so that even my 3 and 5 yr old kids LOVE the Seeger Sessions music!
Swing Out , Brothers and Sisters, Swing Out.......2007-06-24
"The fact is when Bruce kicked off at 20.30 pm on that Friday night in The Point Theatre, he played non-stop right to the very end very few performers can sustain such intensity and carry a gig off that would be to us punters unforgettable those night were UNFORGETTABLE!!!!!!!I thought Bruce was never gonna stop and the highlight of the night Bruce lying exhausted over the top of the piano as if he had not a breath left in the world. Dublin was a case of the time the music and the performer - A MOMEMT IN TRUE HISTORY FOR DUBLIN TOWN." IrishJohnny
"Live In Dublin' was one of those once in a lifetime events that we all wish we had attended. Every reviewer sings praise for this CD and DVD. Veteran concert goers and reviewers say this was the best concert they had ever attended. That is all well and good, but in the end Bruce Springsteen and the Sessions Band care about their fans. You can hear the fans singing along, 'Pay Me My Money Down ', 'Further On Up The Road', 'Erie Canal' and then there is 'Mrs McGrath' an obvious Irish favorite. Just when you think this CD could not get any better, the Boss kicks it up a notch. In fact I was singing along with the rest of'em. The ambience that the live audience gives to this CD is palpable. Springsteen and the audience must have shared the energy and the vibes from the Irish. You can feel the excitement in the air. I thought the Seeger CD was one of the Boss's best CD's, but the 'Live In Dublin' is undoubtabley the best. As my best friend has said, "This is one of the top five CD's ever".
Bruce Springsteen's manager Jon Landau said, "'Live in Dublin' charts the development of a band from an informal gathering in Bruce's living room to an onstage powerhouse. It also documents the growth in Bruce's vision of American music; it includes folk music, blues, Dixieland, country, swing, gospel, rock, down to and including his own writing. It's all performed with Bruce's classic energy and focus. I think it's some of the finest music he's ever made." The 23 songs on this CD are the best of the best. Included are many from his Seegers CD. They all belong in Springsteen's chest of dreams.
This CD and DVD are memorial for the emotions that are so evident in every song. Songs like the antiwar "Mrs. McGrath" and "O Mary Don't You Weep" benefit from these in-concert performances, "and a 17-piece band allows Springsteen to freewheel onto back roads" said Marty Lance. "If I Should Fall Behind" becomes a lovely waltz, "Open All Night" swings like Bob Wills, and "Growin' Up" and "Blinded by the Light" are new arrangements. "The high point, however, just might be "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live," the 1929 Blind Alfred Reed song that Springsteen has retrofitted with new lyrics about the government's bungling of Hurricane Katrina's aftermath. Bruce's connection to folk protest deepens, on the rewrite of "How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live". A Depression era classic that Springsteen found on a Ry Cooder album and then amended with his own brilliantly Bush-baiting verse is perhaps the most politically extreme and, as hammered home here, exultant performance of his career." Even more wonderful is "Eyes On The Prize", sung with Mark Anthony Thompson. "If I Should Fall Behind", a duet with Patty Sciafla, is one of my favorites, and "When The Saints Go Marching In" and "This Little Light Of Mine" rock free and easy. "In short, it's everything Springsteen's big-hearted thoughtfully impassioned take on Americana ever set out to be. Swing out sisters and brothers, swing out."

bruce morphing?.......2007-06-23
Back in the 70's and 80's I used to purchase all Bruce's records, collect all his bootleg albums, stand in line sometimes overnight to get tickets to his shows ... Ah! you get the picture.
But once the Born in the USA tour was over, Bruce went down the tubes (in my book). Yeah, he still did some great shows, but those memories faded fast. He seemed to be getting an attitude.
Here, however, he seems to have once again captured some of his earlier energy and commitment to the fans. This double-cd is great! He definitely has regained his knack (here) for musical arrangements that'll stand the test of time.
If you are a floundering Bruce fan, get this one; it'll be one cd you'll wear out. Well worth the money.

While The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou movie got mixed reviews, the soundtrack was universally hailed as excellent. The standout was Jorge, who not only had a role as an actor but also played a handful of Bowie songs solo with acoustic guitar, singing them in Portuguese it was a perfect combination of beautiful songs laid bare with a bit of exotic Brazilian spice to add fresh flavor. This collection features the whole of that Bowie session, which means Jorge's six songs from the soundtrack, seven other Bowie tunes and one playful Jorge original entitled "Team Zissou." Even though 2005 saw the release of his domestic debut Cru (which mostly featured his own songs and a band), Jorge found himself touring the U.S. in front of large crowds of 20-somethings who patiently waited for those Bowie songs. This album obviously gives the people what they want, and the good news is that the other versions are just as good as the ones that are on the original soundtrack. --Tad Hendrickson

A must for any true Bowie fan. If you love Bowie, you will love this. The only thing better would be for David to do it himself.

Today I purchased an album and I have not done this in months if not years. As a result of my love for David Bowie, covers, and Life Aquatic I purchased The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions by Seu Jorge. As Bowie puts it in the liner notes - thanks to Jorge he now knows how "beautiful" his songs are. Sung in Portugese a new melodious (nearly a lullaby feel) version of Bowie's classics are available. It has made my week.
Seu Jorge.......2007-05-12
I like this CD. The songs sound really cool with the classical guitar and the portuguese lyrics and his voice. I try to cover the songs but I haven't got a nylong string guitar and of course I'm singing Bowie's lyrics (but his versions are easier to learn, you know, one guitar so...). Just nice to listen to.
"Repeat All".......2007-04-17
Great CD! Bought both the soundtrack (David Bowie fan) and this. Found the porteguese versions of Bowies songs beautiful. Very melodic! This is a CD you want to put on repeat all and listen to for any occassion!
a little miffed...........2007-03-21
I recently purchased this CD SOLELY because it was my understanding it had a "hidden" track, noted on this page by "15. Untitled Track", SUPPOSED to be Space Oddity, one of my all-time favorite songs & again, the SOLE reason I wanted the CD in the first place... well, its not there. Did I miss something?!!!

As vocalist for the Mavericks, Raul Malo's powerful voice and the band's success in mixing vintage material with originals arranged in "classic" styles helped revive eclecticism in Nashville. Here, he and a first-rate band of acoustic sidemen run through country, pop, and folk standards, most (not all) well-known. Mixing Bob Dylan ("You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go") and Gordon Lightfoot ("Early Morning Rain") with Jimmie Rodgers ("Waiting for a Train") and the Louvin Brothers ("The Great Atomic Power") is quintessential Malo. Having long ago channeled Roy Orbison's vocal dynamics, it's a given that he soars on "Blue Bayou" and the Henry Mancini-Johnny Mercer pop standard "Moon River." He and the musicians rework Van Morrison's "Bright Side of the Road" into a powerful gospel-style rave-up. Good as those three numbers are, the players don't sustain that same level throughout. These supremely gifted pickers, all respected instrumentalists, play it safe with solos and arrangements. Even Malo himself seems uncharacteristically low-keyed. The music is certainly pleasant, but given such a stellar blend of talent, it's also disappointingly predictable. --Rich Kienzle

raul malu has a great voice, the album has good vibes, and is a good listen.

What a great mix of songs. Malo covering Orbison's 'Blue bayou' is unbelievable. Pick this album up a.s.a.p.
CD review.......2006-07-25
I loved this CD! Raul Malo's clear, strong voice blends well with the acoustic instrumentation. What a pleasure to listen to!
What a great album!.......2006-03-19
As I'm writing this, I'm hearin' for... I don't know how many times to this great album. With all the due respect, I just don't understand what does Rich Kienzle mean by "disappointingly predictable". I mean, come on, what's so predictable about it or, even worst, disappointingly? It's a great album! Great musicians, great selection of songs and on the top of it all there's Raul Malo's voice, the best one since Elvis and Roy Orbison. That's the plain truth. Sorry Rich, but that's the way I see. If I'm disapointed is that the album has mere 12 songs. I could hear 12 more, easily. Once a heard a fan saying that he would pay just to hear Doc Watson talk. It wouldn't matter if he wouldn't sing or play anything. I understood right away what he meant, because I would to. The same thing applies to artists like Raul Malo. He doesn't have to do much to please his audience and, in my point of view, he does a lot on this record. I didn't like his previous work "Today", the songs aren't good and so, but still there's a great voice behind them. Well, I think I've said enough. Fans, of course will love it. Newcomers would want more. That's how I see.
Favorites tunes? Louvin Brothers' "Great Atomic Power", Roy's "Blue Bayou", and Hank Williams's "Weary Blues". Although the instrumental is great, I'd love to hear Malo singing Jimmie Roger's "Waiting For A Train". Maybe next time. The weakest try is Gram Parsons' "Hot Burrito", once Malo himself has done it better. Keep on singin' Raul and God bless you.

Offbeat enough to be worth your time........2007-06-02
This adaption of a famous Broadway play is a truly funky story with overtones of science fiction and some of the greatest music ever performed on screen. I never get tired of the soundtrack and play it often.
A great album.......2007-02-04
This album contains must of the song fron 1986 movie. This movie is great the music is fantastic. Unlike the on the movie the song are all unabriged on the track. The final song one the second version of the movie mean green mother from outer space for reason I don't understand was abriged for the movie. The songs running time was drasticaly cut from about 4.5 minutes on the album to about a little over 2 minutes. This originally was not the final song for the movie. When this movie was original first the last song was Don't Feed the Plants from the off brodway play. However six months after the movie was first released the whole ending sequence of the movie with Rick Morransis, Ellen Greeen. Levi Stubs and Jim Bilusie had to be shot over again due to negative audience reactions from several people who were upset and not stastified with director Frank Ozze's original first ending. As a result of the ending being modified from a sad depressing ending to a lovely romantic happy ending the song Don't feed the plants and the footage that went along with it were instantly trimed out of footage and only a small fragmet of it exist on the dealete scenes and out take portions of the dvd. However for reason I could never figure out don't feed the plants is include as the final song one the last track of the album even though it no longer exist in the current dvd and vhs formats of the movie
Little Shop At Its Musical Best.......2006-09-21
The film recording of Little Shop is the best recording of the score yet (despite missing many of the stage version's more superflous and campy ditties)The vocal arangements and orchestrations are the best and most appropriately complementary to the piece. They capture the sound, and spirit in full and with fun and excitement. The cast is superb, and Ellen Greene proved herself quite brilliant in her ability to adapt her stage performance for the small size of film. The performance of Levi Stubbs, criticized on this site, is actually the BEST interpretation and vocal performance of Audrey II to date, anywhere. It is the only performance to truly bring the role to life and is damn funny. The cuts and changes are all logical for the medium of film, and obviously approved of as they were made by Howard Ashman himself. The original off-broadway cast (yes, the show was NOT an official broadway show, therefore could not have won a tony for anyone) is the next best recording. But to those who harp on the film for cutting the stage songs, the original cast album is not the full score, and has cuts made as well. The New Broadway Cast recording, which had great potential and money behind it, is the full stage score. Yet the worst in orchestration, quality, and casting to date. Though bland enough to easily digest, it is no where close to the film's sound and energy.
Great Soundtrack.......2006-07-25
Nice adaptation of the show to the screen. Rick Moranis in the best part of his career. And having Ellen Greene preserved on film as Audrey is wonderful. One of the best musical comedy performances of the 80's. Too bad the original was an Off-Broadway production. She deserved a Tony.
Little Shop of Horrors -The Moview CD.......2006-02-18
If you are a fan of the movie, then you will really enjoy this CD. It revives the memory of the movie in every song that is played. First rate soundtrack.
