Classic[al] Stones.......2007-07-10
As both a huge Rolling Stones fan and a lover of classical music, I have to say this is one of the most enjoyable and interesting discs I own. Here are 11 of the Stones' best songs, as you have never heard them before. This cd is certainly a tribute to the melodic and lyrical genius of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and crew, but the impeccable London Symphony Orchestra and guest vocalists transform these catchy rock tunes into incredibly haunting and powerful musical sagas. The versions of "Ruby Tuesday" and "As Tears Go By" are really amazing and even tragic. "Sympathy for the Devil" has an operatic feel to it. The child-like innocence of "Dandelion" is really quite entertaining. Considering the Stones were really a blues band at heart, one wouldn't think initially that their repertoire would translate well into a symphonic format. But it does. There is only one way to enjoy this rare musical treat-buy this cd now!
Best CD I own........2003-11-04
I've had this CD for what seems like a lifetime now, and I still can't put it away. By far the most timeless CD I own.
Classical classics.......2002-11-12
The lively levi clad rebel music of the Stones is traded in for high brow tuxedo's and an orchestral sound with mixed results. Through the years I've played this disc for a different rendering of the familiar rock anthems. As stated by another reviewer you must not compare because one is rock and one is a classical treatment of a rock song. The problem is that it is hard to seperate comparisons. Beginning with "Street Fighting Man" the Stones anthem that was banned because of the resulting violence it incited, the disc is a subdued and barely recognized shell of the original Richards and Jagger penned number. The translations work at times like the interesting versions of "Paint It Black"and the hauntingly beautifully dark "Symphony For the Devil" that sounds like a theme from play. For the most part the pure musical numbers are better than the others where vocals exist becuse of the inevitable vioce comparisons. An exception might be Marianne Fathfull's rendering of "Ruby Tuesday." Mick Jagger is featured on one song, "Angie," for a slightly different vocal interpretation that is slower and more dramatic. The London Symphony Orchestra produces a lush backdrop for the familiar songs associated with guitar and rock and roll. Taken alone it is a nice sampling of the Stones music but it is very hard to not make comparisons. They are two different genres and should be treated as such. Nonetheless I prefer the original versions but find these songs to be more soothing and sophisticated. As alternatives to the originals it sounds good but not great.
Excellent choice.......2002-08-27
If you enjoy Classical versions of rock music, this is one that you must get. I love it. They have excellent version of the songs. This album is THE album that turned me on with Classical version of Rock music.
Forget the original Stones stuff--just enjoy for itself.......1999-07-23
Interesting form of Stones music--definitely not for the Stones purist, but not bad if just taken as music to enjoy by itself.

ANOTHER RENDITION BUT WORTH IT.......2002-06-08
There are too many renditions of these two songs but its seems Europeans love this material. And there are many investors and labels out there who only want the old material. Now it's great for any Melanie hardcore collection but I wouldn't recommend it to the beginner.
Melanie has recorded many great albums over the past 15 years. Unfortunately the small labels can't compete with the big boys and these great recordings are lost in the course of time. It's a shame a Geffen or Arista or Warners doesn't have a label for great artists like Melanie that could reach a significant audience and still be profitable for them.
3 versions of Ruby Tuesday????.......2001-06-12
Ok, Melanie offers us 3 "NEW" versions of "Ruby Tuesday", this makes 10 versions of this song recorded by Melanie. Why?? The original version on "Candles In The Rain" is the best one. Melanie keeps on recording the same material over and over and over again. Why? Well, maybe lack of new material. Maybe she thinks one day she'll get it right again. Please NO MORE versions of Ruby Tuesday. Another version of "Candles In The Rain", this makes, what 5? This "new" version is horrible, her voice is incredibly weak and trite. "Shine On" the only new song starts out promising, but loses it's punch as Melanie reaches for notes far out of her vocal range. This is "Shine On" # 1, I'm certain by next year we'll have "Shine On" # 4. Melanie get with it, please, write some new material or at the very least cover songs that you haven't done before. This is getting very old & boring already. I understand she has a new live out & you guessed it, old songs done over again. Melanie if you do what you've have always done, you will be what you have always been.
Top Notch, Contemporary Pop Melanie.......2000-03-15
Very cool renditions of "Ruby Tuesday." Three of them, in fact. The "pop" version is best, as the rap in the reggae(? ) version is not really rap at all and rather pointless ("here we go, here we go, here we go, here we go!") and the rock version is something of an outdated cliche'. Still, they're interesting to listen to and one can only imagine the incredible album possibilities utilizing these up to date production values. An updated version of "Lay Down" is interesting as well, and yes, much better than any other recent artist's cover. Melanie's unique voice, of course, still shines. The last cut, "Shine On," is the new one here which is an excellent song still in search of an excellent rendering.
~*~Melanie is Rockin'~*~.......2000-03-03
WoW! This is truly a modern Melanie listening experience! I love the radio edit of "Lay Down"....Melanie's new version of "Lay Down" outshines the Meredith Brooks & Queen Latifah attempt. Hey, there is only ONE melanie after all! The feat, big reggie version of "Ruby Tuesday" is terrific....something that will throw some groovin' into my old VW bug when it putters down the street! The pop mix & rock version of "Ruby Tuesday" SHOULD be on U.S. radio...a lot of people are missing out on Melanie at her best. "Shine On" is really great, I don't think that I've heard it before. All I can say is buy the album before it's too late, you ~~will never~~ regret owning this masterpiece of Melanie's Rock n' Roll heart!
New Melanie for 2000.......2000-02-02
This is a 5 song CD. 1 new version of "lay down" 3 new versions of "ruby tuesday" and 1 new song. It is an interesting musical expierence. The rap versions of Ruby Tuesday sounds pretty damn good!

Customer Reviews:
On second thought..........2005-08-18
I reviewed this album and originally gave it two stars. When I first heard the album (in its original incarnation, "Melanie Recorded Live @ Borders"), I didn't think much of it. Well, the review began to haunt me and I realized that I needed to listen to the album again. And again, and again.
As a result, I've developed a tremendous fondness for the disc. This is Melanie in concert, and it's a real concert recording. There was minimum overdubbing, if any, so the performances are sometimes raw - irresistably so. And Melanie chose to include some of her strongest early songs, ones you don't necessarily hear a lot: "Baby Day," "The Good Book," and "Close To It All." And, of course, there are the hits, too: "Brand New Key," "Peace Will Come," "Look What They Done To My Song, Ma," "Lay Down." The songs are interspersed with great stage patter.
Melanie is joined by her daughters, Leilah and Jeordie (known as "Safka") on background and harmony vocals, and her son Beau Jarred on guitar. The strongest track here is the version of "Lay Down (Candles In the Rain)." What a great song!!!
Thank you, Melanie, again, and again, and again...
