Rosa Mundi is a celebration of the rose in song, as singer June Tabor pays musical homage to the famous flower through musical selections dating from the 15th century to the present day. Tabor integrates words and poetry from sources foreign to many of the pieces. Throughout the album, Tabor is accompanied by various combinations of piano, violin, viola, and cello. For the most part, Rosa Mundi is a low-key affair, featuring many delicate numbers with a slightly melancholy air, such as "Roses of Picardy" (a sentimental World War I song) and "Winterrose" (a 15th-century German carol). Displaying true versatility, Tabor even includes a musical selection by Tchaikovsky. There's no denying the romanticism behind her performances here. Rosa Mundi is a charming album perfect for curling up with your loved one by the fire with a glass of Merlot. --Bryan Reesman

In May by Ludwig Senfl is instrumentally performed by Fretwork. The singing of Charles Daniels, tenor, is very special as I imagine Herr Senfl intended it. Fretwork and Charles Daniels are most balanced and lovely. I say it is as pleasing as Cipriano De Rore's Missa Praeter Rerum Seriem by the Tallis Scholars -a true gem. This would make a most excellent gift if one wishes to share it.

Wonderful!.......2004-06-12
I have always enjoyed listening to masses and requiems. This is one of the best masses I have ever heard. The chorus and orchestra are well balanced and both are filled with an overwhelming amount of emotion. The soloists are perfect. I love Rosa Mannion's voice, her high notes are amazing, she is by far one of the best sopranos I have heard. The Credo, usually a boring section of the mass, is without a doubt the most uplifting. The Sanctus is amazing! I love the way the soloists fade to nothing only to be overcome by the powerfull "pleni sunt coeli". I also love the Benedictus. The violin solo is absolutly beautifull! The Benedictus is by far the best part of the eniter mass. Beethoven definetly accomplised his goal!
Wonderful!.......2004-06-12
I first heard the Missa Solemnis while watching a concert on tv. I found many problems with it, the orchestra and chorus was not well balanced and the alto soloist sounded like a man. However, when i found this recording I was thrilled! I have heard a few others and this is the absolute best! The soloists are amazing, I especially love Rosa Mannion's beautiful voice. He high notes really complete the sound. The chorus and orchestra are well balanced and one never overpowers the other. I am also very fond of the Benedictus. The violin solo is very emotional and and serves as an excellent intro for the soloists. The Agnus Dei ends the entire maserpiece perfectly, leaving you with an overwhelming feeling of faith.
understanding of Beethoven.......2001-11-22
Although Gardiner's period performance is crystal-sharp, Herreweghe is able to blend the simplicity of period instruments with a deeper understanding of Beethoven's spirituality which is, on the whole, more convincing. At the same time, he is likewise able to bring out the full richness of Beethoven's counterpoint, particularly in the Kyrie and the Credo. His closing fugue ("Et vitam venturi saeculi") is among the best I've heard (and one of the fastest!).
Wonderful, deeply felt live recording........1999-05-26
Reflects an understanding of Beethoven at his most spiritual. Reverent and highly musical.
A most beautiful performance.......1999-05-01
Beethoven' s greatest work (according to the composer himself), has had many good recordings. But this new one from the great Belgian conductor Philippe Herreweghe, most deffinitely demands to be heard. The most striking thing about this recording, is how beautiful it sounds. Those who think period instruments make an ugly sound should hear this recording to eat their words. A beauty.

Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-13
'Mary Magdalene at the feet of Christ' is a rare gem of Baroque sacred music by Antonia Caldara (1670-1736), who ranks among the most prolific of the late-baroque composers associated with the Oratorio. There are 6 characters in this oratorio: Maddalena (Maria Christina Kiehr-soprano); Marta (Rosa Dominguez-soprano); Amor Terrano (Bernarda Fink-alto); Amor Celeste (Andreas Scholl-countertenor); Fariseo (Ulrich Mesthaler-basso); Cristo(Gerd Turk-tenor). The part of 'Amor Celeste' was given to the countertenor (sexless,so to speak) to denote the heavenly spheres. The part of 'Amor terrano' in the sensual raiment of a woman, is supposed to represent worldly seduction. It is these 2 protagonists, moreover, who motivate the plot. 'Amor terrano' metamorphoses from a figure cast in neutral terms at the beginning to a "devlish" but defeated seductress at the end. In the process the merit of having conquered the depths of evil devolves upon Maddalena. She is elevated into a position which exemplifies Christian salvation. The modest share allotted to Christ as a "dramatis persona" (not a bass, but a soaring tenor) emphasizes Maddalena's merit all the more. The voices on this recording are superb!!!!It is actually the first time I heard Turk's marvelous tenor voice; it overwhelmed me with its resonance. This is a stellar production with Rene Jacobs' magic touch.
Impeccable!.......2004-03-17
It took almost a year 'till I finally got this CD and it was worth while waiting. This is undoubtedly the best CD in my collection (out of 400 titles), and I would highly recommend it to any Baroque lover: pure celestial voices, perfect direction and an amazing music which brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it, eventhough I'm not religious nor christian.
Dear reader, trust me on this - you must have it!
Thrilling and luxurious masterpiece.......2000-09-26
Action-packed and luxurious.
Despite the title of this piece, this is not 'churchy' music. It has everything that good drama has, and if it were a book it would be unputdownable. Caldara gives us action, showing himself to be every bit as much dramatist as composer. The story and the pace never flag for a minute. René Jacobs moves it along at a cracking pace and makes it a memorable event. It must have been wonderful to take part.
Amor Celeste and Amor Terreno are battling for the heart and soul of Maddalena. It opens with Fink's stunning Amor Terreno, seductive enough to capture the heart of a stone. In trying to win Maddalena, her ornamentations paint vivid pictures of "drunk with pleasure". Then, in charges Scholl's Amor Celeste, powerful and confident of winning the battle hands down - but then so is Fink's Amor Terreno, full of strength and depth. You can't take sides at their declaration of war, the duet Alle vittorie, because both are convincing - and their voices blend perfectly. The sheer strength of Scholl's voice in this piece brushes aside the familiar accusations of "too ethereal".
Their awesome battle duets punctuate the unfolding drama as Maddalena agonises - in dialogue with her sister - over her choices, and the orchestra supports them with real fire. The chest-thumping opening provided by Chiara Banchini's string band in the duet La mia virtude/Il senso è un nemico makes an impact that would lift you off your seat in a concert hall (if only). When Amor Terreno is finally defeated, the colours of her fury are so vivid you can taste it, and it's clear that the only destiny for such rage is Hell. Amor Celeste's victory-celebration Su, lieti festeggiate has the earthy gusto of mens' peasant dances. A rather earthy sound for Amor Celeste at this point... even the metaphysical Mr Scholl sounds as though he could stomp his feet.
This recording made Maria Cristina Kiehr a star, and she has never sounded better than as Maddalena. Her clear voice expresses longing, indecision, passion and tranquillity with equal facility, and is never less than completely beautiful. Her expressions, as Maddalena changes course, develop brilliantly. Her cry of "Signor, pietate!" is the pivot of the whole thing - high drama indeed.
All the singers are now stars, and every performance is stunning. Un-improvable.
So many of the tunes are completely original and whistle-able, even dance-able, that I am surprised they are not better known. They certainly stick in the memory, if only because the repeat button on the CD player gets a lot of use. This composition is a masterpiece and the 2-CD set a great Baroque luxury.
The very last note is a complete surprise -- pure genius from Caldara.
What a discovery!.......1999-12-09
Antonio Caldara is one of those names record companies have ignored for too long. So it was a delight to see Harmonia Mundi interested in this very important baroque composer. The work itself is a masterpiece, the music is gorgeous, this must be one of the most significant discoveries of the 90's. Conductor Rene Jacobs has a superb ear for textures, his pacing is just admirable. The soloists couldn't be bettered, with the pure adorable voice of Maria Cristina Kiehr as Maddalena, and Bernarda Fink and Andreas Scholl as the Amore Terreno and Amore Celeste. If you don't know this oratorio, you are in for a big surprise!
Maria Cristina Kiehr is incomparable!.......1999-02-18
This is an incredible recording: it is well worth buying just for the marvelous singing of Maria Cristina Kiehr, who is my candidate for the best baroque soprano. She sounds like nobody else: more like a boy treble (with adult lungs) than your typical female soprano. This characterization may strike you as strange, but it is intended as the highest praise. Reportedly, "She sings like a man," was the first sentence di Stefano uttered when he heard Callas for the first time. The rest of the cast doesn't disappoint either. Bernarda Fink and Andreas Scholl are excellent "Amors," especially memorable in their duets. Fink's alto voice is beautiful and controlled. If you haven't heard her Arnalta in L'Incoronazione di Poppea (Gardiner), make sure you buy that recording. Fink's "Oblivion soave," a deceptively simple aria which requires a perfect legato, is the best I've heard. Scholl is great as usual (although I never quite bought into this Scholl hype). Gerd Turk who sings a small role of Cristo has a fine tenor voice, although he suffers from a common baroque tenor "defect" - he sounds kind of "choked," like he has a tight rope around his neck. Obviously, this is not really a defect, but rather a part of a vocal style which calls for the tightening of the voice in order to achieve a higher pitch and to stifle the vibrato. Still, I prefer tenors like Agnew or Padmore who manage to achieve that same characteristic baroque sonority while also sounding relaxed. Anyway, like I said, "Maddalena" is really worth buying. Another recording (from the same series) that will also be worth every penny you'd spend on it is Cavalli Vespro della Beata Vergine. If you like "Maddalena," I guarantee that you will like the Vespro too.

Rosa Mundi is a celebration of the rose in song, as singer June Tabor pays musical homage to the famous flower through musical selections dating from the 15th century to the present day. For the most part, Rosa Mundi is a low-key affair, featuring many delicate numbers with a slightly melancholy air, such as "Roses of Picardy" (a sentimental World War I song) and "Winterrose" (a 15th-century German carol). Sharing two passions with her listeners.......2004-12-10
Singing and gardening are Tabor's two lifelong passions. If I were to compare her voice to a rose, I would have to call it Jackson and Perkin's "Voluptuous." The color is rich and strong and it's the old tea-rose you have grown up with at its finest. However, the background playing is almost black and white. Pianist Huw Warren is a genius at finding just the right place to punctuate Tabor's 'peaty' contralto and make the song bloom rich in your heart.
This album returns to Tabor's traditional roots. "Rose of Picardy" a popular WWI song about everlasting love is the newest of the songs. A notable cover is her "Barbry Allen." Tabor's interpretation highlights Barbry's emotions in a way that no man's version could.
A celebration of June Tabor - the English Rose.......2003-06-24
From the Queen of English folk music, this is a wonderful album celebrating the rose. It's packed full of traditional songs from across Britain and beyond. I also like the CD booklet which gives a bit of information about each songs.
Her vocals are, as usual, beautifully clear and you can hear every word - and the arrangements are simple and brilliantly played (less is more, here).
I don't know how she does it, but June Tabor just keeps producing fantastic albums. I thought "A Quiet Eye" was a sensational album and was a little frightened about buying "Rosa Mundi" - how could I have doubted you, June? You're the English rose whick we should be celebrating.
A Return to Form for the Grande Dame of English Folk Music.......2002-08-30
"Rose Mundi" is a return to form for June Tabor, after the disappointing "A Quiet Eye". Part of the reason for this lies in the fact that, with "Rose Mundi", June does more of what she does best: Sing traditional English Folk ballads. No one in the world (NO ONE) can match the expressiveness of her rich baritone. No one puts as much emotion into these types of songs as June. A case in point is the pauses and accents she inserts in "Maybe Then I'll Be a Rose", which beautifully convey the feeling of love's longing. I believe that another reason for June's return to form is the fact that the format of this disc as June's first "concept" record challenged her to greater heights. Finally, June's band is outstanding. As on previous efforts, Huw Warren should receive a medal for his work on piano. One listen to the delicateness of his introduction to "Paint Me, Redoute" will soften the hardest of hearts. Listen to Rose Mundi and experience perhaps the greatest English Folk balladeer ever at the peak of her powers.
Tabor is still a marvel..........2002-03-15
The reigning grand dame of English song is back, with a typically rich, multi-faceted album which explores her country's fascination with the thorny, flowering briar known as the rose. If you're a Tabor fan, this record will be a delight; non-fans may find her a bit stuffy, but of course, that's part of the charm. Tabor's current style of chamber music accompaniment (cello, piano, violin and viola) suits her well, and is employed with a sparing yet stately sense of beauty. Lofty, but well worth checking out!
Outstanding! - As Always.......2002-01-02
June Tabor is one of my favorite singers. Her skills as a vocalist and interpreter are unique and without peer. The range of selections on this recording is proof (that is if one needs proof) that Tabor is in a league of her own when it comes to communicating through song. This work is a subtler piece than some of her previous efforts, but then a rose is a subtle affair. While other albums have had strong political/social moments (i.e. her version of Richard Thompson's "Pavane"), "Rosa Mundi" is more about romance and the goodness and sadness of it. However she does make a clever statement about the male chauvinism of the old song "Babary Ellen" with the final song "Maybe Then I'll Be A Rose". So grab this CD and treat yourself to some outstanding singing and musicianship. I feel very blessed to have June Tabor's voice, vision and art as a part of my musical life.

Thank you Paul Schleuse. Your review is right on, and most importantly, I paid $113. (including shipping) from amazon.com/uk to Boston. Less than halk the price here.
Wonderful Set, but why pay this much?.......2005-07-30
This is a landmark set: the complete works of one of the most important composers of the 16th century, in performances of grace and clarity. However, you can get it for less than half of the US price by buying it at Amazon.co.uk. At GBP65.20, it works out to just over $100, or about $10 per disc--quite a bargain on a major addition to any serious early-music collection.

Customer Reviews:
WORTH EVERY PENNY!.......2003-11-30
EVERY COMPOSITION ON THIS ALBUM IS A KEEPER. THE VOICES HARMONIZE IN THE MOST PLEASING WAYS; I NEVER GET TIRED OF LISTENING TO THESE MOST BEAUTIFUL FEMALE VOICES IN HARMONY. THIS IS ONE OF MY TOP LISTENING CHOICES. ORIGINALLY HEARD THIS ON A FM CLASSICAL STATION, AT NIGHT, WHILE THE MOUNTAINS BURNED ALL AROUND. STAYED UP LATE TO LISTEN AND GET THE INFORMATION SO I COULD GET THE MUSIC-SACRIFICED NEEDED SLEEP BUT IT WAS WORTH IT, EVERY MINUTE. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED IF YOU LOVE THE FEMALE VOICE....
