Very Fine Title.......2001-04-02
This very fine title, though not his best, is a good sample of Nelson's skill and diversity, both on saxophone and flute. Best songs are the title song "Playing For Keeps", the feeling song "From one to Another" and "Ten Worlds", this last one with a stunning alto sax solo at 3min 37sec, the best moment of this great title.
Nelson Rangell - Keep your good work!.......1998-12-21
Great misic, great player. Especially "Ten World" and "From One To Another" Nelson Rangell - Keep your good work!

Customer Reviews:
The kind of music I love to dance to..........2001-05-11
I love going out to clubs and listening to great blues bands that swing. I saw the Mellow Fellows after Big Twist had passed away, and believe me, they still rocked the joint, but listening to this album, I really wish I'd gotten the chance to hear Twist sing live and in person.
"300 Pounds of Heavenly Joy" has got to be one of the most joyful and rockin' blues tunes ever recorded. I can't tell you how many times I hit 'repeat' on that song. Just unbelievable.
Must have CD for R&B fans.......2000-12-07
"Big Twist & The Mellow Fellows" is one of the consummate Chicago R&B bands. Why they aren't known outside of Chicago and the midwest is a mystery to me as well as the rest of their fans, I'm sure.
Larry Nolan (otherwise known as Big Twist) handles the vocals on a full R&B band with horn section. You only need to listen to "300 Pounds of Heavenly Joy" to know their style of music -- *powerful* vocals from Larry, a solid bass line and plenty of horns thrown in for good measure. Big Twist's enormous vocal talents are displayed on many of the tracks, in particular "I Brought the Blues on Myself" and "I Want Your Love".
I was fortunate enough to see "Big Twist & The Mellow Fellows" in concert before Big Twist's untimely death. "Playing for Keeps", even though it is not technically a live album, captures the power and immediacy of their live concert quite well.
I own both "Playing for Keeps" and "Big Twist & The Mellow Fellows" (their debut album) and would recommend "Playing For Keeps" as the first Big Twist album to purchase. In my opinion, "Playing for Keeps" is their best work but the debut album is worth puchasing if you like what you hear in "Playing For Keeps".

Customer Reviews:
Best of the Eddie Money Albums.......2005-01-19
I happened to see Eddie Money in concert a few weeks before his very first album came out in 1977. I was in college at Bama and since he was unknown at the time the crowd was very small. In the years following I played all the early albums quite a bit and noticed the progression of sound as the albums went by. This, the third, (summer of 1980) was my favorite. It best blends the songwriting team's strenghts and understated but creative guitar work of Jimmy Lyons. The first 3 albums appeared to me at the time as a strong collaboration between Lyons and Money. The songs "Trinidad," and "Million dollar girl" form a combination (the first and last tracs) that are only matched by the "Two tickets" and "Jealousies" tracs of the first album. The characteristic early years hint of optimism in the lyrics, coupled with the tasteful mix of clean + distorted guitar stylings (Lyon), makes "Playing for Keeps" Money's most listenable album. (nothing fancy, but consider for example the treble guitar riffs in Trinidad). Others may favor Money's later efforts, but this reviewer will hold-on to the third album as the one to keep.
Great Stuff from a guy who doesnt get much credit.......2003-07-03
well first I want to say Eddie and his band doesnt get enough credit for their tunes. this album is a great one. from the tracks "The Wish" and to others as "Get A Move On" the last track "Million Dollar Girl" are all good driving songs. and as always his voice is ever amazing. people ask me how I get into this kind of music because im pretty young. I tell them well this is when music was music and when it was done for the pure enjoyment and the fun of just writing and making records. and they always say back yeah you're right. I looked for this album for a looong time and finally got it off ebay for yah 22 bucks but well worth it. if your a fan of this group then if you see it somewhere pick it up bc its out of print. so grab it and spin it. keep rockin.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Jazz Piano.......2002-07-27
Stride piano demands great virtuosity, and only a handful of players in the world are able to play it with the necessary technique, power and rhythmic tension. In Europe Louis Mazetier, Bernd Lhotzky and Mike Goetz are keepers of the flame. In the US the pre-eminent Dick Hyman is joined by Mike Lipskin, Tom Roberts, Henry "Thins" Francis and now, Andy Fielding.
This solo disc demonstrates Fielding's great strengths as a stride / mainstream pianist. He demonstrates his independence through unhackneyed choice of repertoire. He avoids the overplayed warhorses of stride (with the exception of a fine rendition of "Carolina Shout" reminiscent of James P. Johnson's "Spirituals to Swing" version) and instead offers an eclectic range of tunes including an original rag ("A Ride on the River"), a piece from the TV series "Peanuts" ("Freda with the Naturally Curly Hair), a delightful "One Note Samba", a couple of Gershwin standards, Johnny Guarnieri's lively "The Gospel Truth", and, best of all, a Wellstoodian stride version of bebop classic "A Night in Tunisia". His style is attractive, mixing Dave McKenna like single note base lines with rich harmonisations, a solid swing and that rarest of things, a musical sense of humour.
Fielding is his own man, pulling together a range of musical influences into a satisfyingly coherent whole. This is intelligent piano playing by a significant new talent. Arbors is to be commended for this release, which will hopefully be the first of several solo CDs by Fielding. This is a release to be relished not just by stride fans but by all lovers of swinging mainstream jazz piano. Highly recommended.
