From the country hoedown stomp of "Lunchtime at Rosie's" to the childlike whimsy of "Rocking Horse," Adrian Legg's second Red House Records release is sure to please fans of this wonderfully dexterous acoustic guitarist. While nearly every song showcases his unbelievably quick, fluid finger playing, Legg never sacrifices melody to virtuosity. On songs such as "Shorelines" and "Cradle Songs," Legg establishes tranquil, even hypnotic atmospheres that serve as perfect counterpoints to his uptempo material. On "Tiddles," a little comedic discourse about a cat's unfortunate encounter with the neighbor's dog, Legg puts the guitar down as he tells us of the cat's sad demise ("Finally the whiff of his decomposition made plain his condition..."). A special bonus for those with CD-ROM drives: Legg includes a selection of his photographs to illustrate each song. --Percy Keegan

3 out of 5 stars My favorite Erasure song but not my favorite remixes.......2001-10-05

I had a lot of expectations with the remixes for my personal favorite Erasure song. "Fingers & Thumbs (Cold Summer's Day)" is so irresistably catchy, I'm constantly playing the song over and over a few times at work when I bring the duo's self-titled album to work. I always thought the song would sound great remixed. Now that I have the second part of the two cd remixes for the song, I must say I was left a bit annoyed that the remixes left a bland taste on my mouth. Out of the three remixes of "Fingers & Thumbs", I liked the Tin Tin Out Remix. That's probably because the vocals remain intact and no annoying dub beats like on the Dub On the Moon mix. The unavailable track "HI NRG" was cheesy and mediocre for Erasure. Hopefully someday I can find the other half of the two cd set of remixes for my favorite Erasure song 'cause part two disappointed me.

3 out of 5 stars I Liked the album version better:.......2000-06-19

"Fingers & Thumbs (Cold Summer's Day)" is one of my favorite Erasure songs of all, and I was thrilled when I bought this. The Tin Tin Out Remix was the only version I really liked and at 8+ minutes was a little much. The Electrofinger Remix was fair. I wished they would've stayed closer to the album version and used more of the lyrics cuz they're excellent. Some of the versions just lost me after a while.

4 out of 5 stars typical erasure helped by snappy remix.......1999-06-04

This is your basic Erasure track, strong vocals, lots of bleeps and blips, and a chorus that gets stuck in your head for weeks. The reason to pick this one up, is the Tin Tin Out remix, it keeps all of the vocals intact and adds a ton of energy to make it very accessable for the dancefloor. Easily my favorite Erasure single.

4 out of 5 stars Copy & paste Review #1.......2007-07-07

The follow-up to 2004's Scissors In My Pocket, Paulusma's second long-player sees her adopt a different approach to the first, the acoustic guitar banished to a corner in favour of something a little more electric. As if to drive the point home, opener `Godgrudge' is surely her loudest offering yet; a solid body of indie-based pop building to a noisy crescendo, her folk roots almost undetectable, and just to assure us the electric approach can also be used for the tender parts too, `Where I'm Coming From' drops the tempo down almost immediately, adds an organ to the mix and throws Paulusma's voice to centre-stage for a three-beat tale of temptation.
But however you dress it up, there's just not enough about Fingers & Thumbs that stands out. In making the step up/down/back/forward from acoustic to electric, it's robbed of a lot of the things which could have made it special. The tender songs aren't really that tender by the time you've added a few layers of instruments, and so the songs which began so emotional seem to have been stripped of this quality by the final cut, leaving Fingers & Thumbs falling painfully short of its true potential.

    3 out of 5 stars A little bit different.......2001-01-02

I agree with the other reviews. Adrian Legg is a real artist, and one who really deserves to be called artist. On this cd he mixes in some american influences, where Eric Johnson helped him, adds a poem, and kind of surprise song. While perhaps not the best place to start with Adrian Legg, a very enjoyable listen. And for me a very welcome variation of his other cds. Again 3 strong stars, which in my rating system means VERY good.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent selection from the guitarist of the decade.......1999-05-18

Adrian Legg has done it again! From the opening of "Lunchtime at Rosie's" (featuring Eric Johnson) to the closing of "Mdrundgum", Guitarist magazine's "Guitarist of the Decade" takes us on a journey through a range of styles and moods. Two years after the release of his previous Red House CD "Waiting for a Dancer", Legg has chosen to deliver a more textured album including some percussion, keyboards, bass and subtle vocals. There's also a poem "Tiddles", and a multimedia track "Shorelines" which will give you a set of shoreline pictures to showcase Legg's photographic talent. Guitarists will also be particularly interested in "Hymn for Jaco" and "(Pace Doc)", both of which are featured in his new Homespun video, "How to Cheat at Guitar". There's something for everyone here, and Adrian Legg should make many new friends this time around as well as pleasing his existing fan base.

Whomever edited this great song down to its 7" version absolutely BUTCHERED it, the album version stands well on its own and could have been a hit as it is. And the dub versions just go nowhere. Avoid.
