Editorial Reviews
Jim Coates, Montana Free Press, 1998
It's extremely difficult to put a label on the music and sound of John Herrmann and Clay Green. The closest I can come is to coin one: New World Music. Behind the haunting metaphorically transcendent lyrics of Herrmann lays the delicate partnership of John's instrumentations and vocals and Clay's fantastic array of percussion instruments from around the world. The duo has woven a tapestry that represents the best of many genres - from rock to folk to new age to world music. John and clay have indeed created a new world of musical experience that cuts across generations and musical tastes. Concerts attract adherents from the ranks of the retired to big brimmed cowboys to little children who have fallen in love with the charms of John and his playful sparkling eyes. Clay provides the perfect partner with his quiet dry humor and innovative use of spangles and wrinkles in time. You'll become a devout resident of the new world music of John Herrmann and Clay Green.
Product Description
Elephant Country is an acoustic masterpiece, blending thought provoking lyrics with haunting, beautiful melodies and first class instrumentation. The range of instruments used on this album is staggering: didjeridoo from Australia, djembe and conga drums from Africa, hand made wind chimes, gongs, fretless bass, mandolin, cello and violin as well as acoustic guitars and keyboards. Elephant Country takes you on an emotional tailspin through upbeat, rambling songs such as "Sun Rose" and "My Merry Go Round" to deep, moving spiritual songs such as "Sothisis" and "Marrach Rong". Percussionist Clay Green paints sonic pictures with his use of melodic drums, cymbals, chimes and shakers, while bassist and keyboardist Ken Nelson fills each song with rich harmonies and tasteful bass riffs.

Slow, intimate, and brilliant, an all-time classic.......1999-02-17
This album is amazing! I love all four Dieselhed albums, but have to say that this one is the warmest, subtlest, and most perfect. Slow, semi-acoustic, with intimate, vulnerable vocals and superbly tasteful musicianship, it takes you through gulps, giggles and tonguetiedness, through losses, mishaps, road trips, bouts of drunkenness, evenings of squandering, and wildernesses, then all the way back home. The songs are funny, sad, sarcastic, sincere, ludicrous and believable, sometimes all at once. While "Trucker's Alibi" leans towards pathos and "Futon Song" towards hilarity, songs like "Tying Flies," "Cold Duck" and "Twin Falls" fuse at least several emotions into something that doesn't even have a word in English. I consider it one of the finest albums I have ever heard.

A Refreshing Awakening.......2002-01-14
This symphony of spirit screams!! This CD grabbed me and my friends with integrity from the start. The next thing I knew I was comforted and willingly danced throughout a holographic musical performance. Real listeners are respected and paid with high quality, dynamic twists and artistic expression that exceeds any of todays expectations. These songs comfort and tangle at the same time. Compassion, Truth, and Strength through Softness await you. I envy your first listen. There is no predicting. I gave in, opened my heart and surrendered my ears to be directed and was gracefully pleased to have done so. Have your cuppa ready and sit between your speakers, this is an adventure! Take my advice, save the shipping and handling fees later by buying two or three copies now...
"A must have...".......2001-07-29
I own a lot of cds. I have five favorites that never stray far from my cd player and "Elephant Country" is one of them! John Andre Herrmann's "Elephant Country" is a must have for any serious music critic. The depth of lyrical quality, the richness of the instruments and the production is flawless. The songs are haunting to say the least. I have owned John's cd for over a year and i never get tired of listening to his heart felt songs. The melodies resonate and stay with me long after the music has stopped playing.I highly recommend this rare gem in the sea of average that we are bombarded with on commercial radio! My other four favorites, just to give you an idea, are: Dave Mathews, Pearl Jam, the Beatles and Van Morrison. Get a hold of John's "Elephant Country" you will not be dissapointed!
Just remarkable.......1999-12-12
This is a superlative effort put forth by Mr. Herrman. I listen to this album over and over. I am so enamored with his work that "Marrach Rong" is going to be my wedding song. If that isn't an endorsement I don't know what is!
This is a CD that you can listen to over and over!!!.......1999-01-31
Every time I listen to this CD I hear and learn more about the songs. There appear to be some very deep and thought provoking feelings in the lyrics. I would recommend this CD to anyone of my friends and family. In short, I love it!!!
Brilliant!.......1999-01-21
This album leaves me wanting more! Re:Joyce is a classic song waiting to be discovered! (If any Hollywood film producers are reading this review and subsequently use this song in one of their films, any chance of a "spotters fee"?). The more I listen to it all, the more I get out of it. The overtones of blues, folk, jazz (and the one ingredient which prevails throughout the music which cannot be categorised) makes this album totally unique.
