About the Artist
Danny Quinn is an American folk singer who has toured throughout the United States, Canada and Ireland performing for the last 28 years. Danny writes much of his own music and has toured with the popular folk singer Tommy Makem.

Product Description
Vacant Chair is a combination of Danny's own music along with some of his favorite Irish and American songs. The title song "Vacant Chair" was written during the American Civil war at the time of the first legal Thanksgiving. A man in Massachusetts wrote about his young nephew who would not be coming home for Thanksgiving ever again. The cheerful and fun "Summer Roads" was written by the wonderful Tommy Makem who has written a song for every season. "They're Going Home" was inspired by the recent trend of reverse immigration of Irish people who have been moving back to Ireland. This cd has been loved by many of Danny's new and more historical fans. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars ROBERT E. LEE COMES TO LIFE!.......2001-01-02

Jimerson has created a recording that gives the listener a wonderful sampling of the music Robert E. Lee would have heard during his lifetime, in a true period style. As a regular visitor to Lee's birthplace, I am impressed by and enjoyed the results of Jimerson's historical research at the Robert E. Lee archives at Stratford Hall.

2 out of 5 stars Not real great.......2000-11-23

Aside from the competent performances of Douglas Jimerson and Jill Worley, the singers and musicians on this CD are rather poor. But the recording is worse - poor quality, and done in such a way as to emphasize defects in the presentation. Whenever David Calib comes in with the drums, everything else is drowned out. Did they put the mike _in_ the drum? Sounds like it. The best numbers were those with Jimerson soloing with only a piano backup. It was therefore very disappointing to hear "All Quiet Along the Potomac" as a trumpet/drum instrumental. All this is not to mention the quibble that the album's connection with Robert E. Lee is a bit strained. Aside from "How Firm a Foundation," most of the songs have very little to do with Lee aside from the fact that his family might conceivably have had the sheet music lying around the house, or they were popular during/after the wars he took part in. Be that as it may, I'm sorry to say that three-quarters of the CD is barely listenable.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album!.......2004-01-13

'Vacant Chair' is the latest CD by the greatest undiscovered singer / songwriter in America. The collection of songs includes Irish folk, originals, and American folk songs and there is not a bad one in the bunch. `House of the Rising Sun' invokes a feeling that Danny is channeling some of the great blues artists of the 20th century, while `Free Mary (In Derry)' and `They're Going Home' are based on actual events and observations of his annual group tour of Ireland. `Long Black Veil' never sounded better, even when sung by the late great Johnny Cash. All of the songs lead up to the traditional `Parting Glass' which creates an excellent ending to an excellent CD.

John McCormack's career as an opera star was relatively brief, though it included a number of engagements at Covent Garden and the Met between 1907 and 1919. It was as a recitalist, from about 1910 until the mid-1930s, that he enjoyed his greatest success. Yet he might have ended up a footnote in musical history had it not been for one thing: the phonograph. McCormack's 791 surviving recordings, made between 1904 and 1942, cover a formidable range of material, showing what a versatile artist he was. His vibrant timbre and clarion brilliance--so refreshing to encounter, even in 70-year-old transcriptions--utterly annihilate the wimpy efforts of such popular modern-day "voices" as Andrea Bocelli. Here was someone who really knew how to sing, who cultivated a burnished beauty of tone from bottom to top, whose delivery sparkled. All of that can be heard on this three-CD compilation from Nimbus, with individual discs showcasing the Irish-born tenor in operatic selections, popular and Irish song, and recital repertory recorded with the violinist Fritz Kreisler. The choice of material proves thoroughly representative, and the remasterings are more than satisfactory. --Ted Libbey
