5 out of 5 stars Music for Meditation.......2007-01-04

This is a delightful collection of music appropriate to meditative prayer. It is often my prayer companion, and I like the style and performance found on this CD. I highly recommend it to people who enjoy deeper reflection with a wordless musical background.

4 out of 5 stars Be Thou My Vision.......2005-10-19

Track 3, Be Thou My Vision, was a surprise as the song was the final song played at my father's funeral. It set the closing mood most fittingly. While Be Thou My Vision is my favorite the entire collection is wonderfully mellow. I recommend it for for the mellow moods.

4 out of 5 stars Reverent, beautiful.......2003-09-21

After criticizing Windham Hill in the past for often recycling the same songs over and over in various collections, I have to hand it to them with the new "Prayer" CD. It's a fine set of all-new acoustic versions of hymns or spiritual songs, plus a good number of original compositions. Producer Dawn Atkinson has done an excellent job of lining up a bunch of top-drawer people for "Prayer," and in working with the artists on the song selection.

Things get started with Tim Story's lovely piano rendition of the "Sanctus" from Faure's Requiem. The quiet and reflective tone of that piece carries throughout the CD. Other highlights include Paul McCandless's moving "Lord's Prayer" version and Steve Erquiaga's "Ave Maria." "Prayer" is a perfect disc for background listening if you're engaged in some activity that needs harmonious yet unobtrusive accompaniment.

Album Description

Spirited new sounds from across the sea to the shores of the New Land. From the first colonists to the American Revolution and the birth of our republic Hesperus Early Music Ensemble's music reflects a time of new ideas, freedom and vitality. In town and village, parlor and ballroom, from the Appalachians to the great concert halls hear the musical pulse of early American music performed on a wide variety of folk and early music instruments. Includes: lively country-dance tunes, evocative Shape Note Hymns, old time Appalachian fiddle tunes, graceful European parlor music, French cotillions, divisions and improvisations. Introduction -The English Colonies in America were a patchwork-not just of territories whose boundaries became state lines, but of people from different places and classes with widely different values and experiences. This recording presents music from that patchwork; from England, the Colonial homeland; Scotland and Ireland, the homes of the largest groups of immigrants outside England; and France, the ally of the Patriots, and music written in the United States. More recordings by HESPERUS from Maggie's Music are Celtic Roots featuring Scottish fiddler, Bonnie Rideout and Early American Roots. Hesperus Ensemble is THE sought after musical group for period music that is both authentic, and most important fun, lively and spirited. They are frequent performers at the Smithsonian's Institute of American Music and can be heard on the soundtrack or the Paramount film with Johnny Depp entitled Sleepy Hollow! Excerpts from liner notes:2.A Set of English Country Dance Tunes: Maiden Lane, Jack O'Lent, Chestnut, Bonny Broom - The visionary London music publisher John Playford first published his English Dancing Master in 1651. It was reprinted 18 times over the next 77 years and is still popular today. 3. Parting Friends/Primrose - These tunes have come down to us in choral arrangements called shape-note hymns .

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2007-05-20

This cd travels everywhere with me and you can easily imagine a ball at Monticello given by Mr. Jefferson when you hear it.
Try not to daydream too much while driving as i had done several times..lol..it's hard not to with this cd..:)
Perfect for a colonial reenactment or party.

5 out of 5 stars A relaxing journey into our Colonial past.......2006-03-16

I bought this CD to provide me with another dimension to my studies of period events. It truly contains a wealth of music, and takes it place as an important addition to my musical library. Living in the Mt Vernon area, I often travel with the CD playing while visiting historical places, and it provides a wonderful companion to "set the mood" for the myriad locations in the area. The quality of the sound is remarkable, the musicians superb, and the breadth of song selection provides a musical landscape for the period. Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2004-03-04

I first heard the "Colonial America" CD by Hesperus when I visited Monticello recently (the home of Thomas Jefferson) where they were playing the songs in the gift shop. Imagine my dismay to find that only one cassette tape was left of the fabulous music of Hesperus; however, that tape held me spell-bound all the way home, from Virginia to North Carolina.

It was an incredible journey from the past that has stayed with me since, and every day I drive that one hour back and forth to work. This music has changed everything about the trips, and I can't wait for more.

Thanks to Amazon.com I was able to buy all three CD's, including "Early American Roots," "Colonial America" and the incredible "Celtic Roots" with the most beautiful violas imaginable.

Thank you Hesperus! Please play more!

5 out of 5 stars Cold Mountain type music that's great.......2003-11-15

Novels and movies like Cold Mountain, Oh Brother Where Art Thou? and Song Catchers are showing the growing interest in traditional music and this recording hits the mark. It is music from the days of early America--the time when the first colonists come to America. You can hear the fiddle playing tunes still popular in the Appalachian mountains today and also hear shape note music arranged by Hesperus as wonderful instrumentals. The music takes you to a time when folks were making music in their homes-before TV, before the internet! This recording is good for teachers or educational purposes too- with informative liner notes. All the music is played on folk and early music instruments and it's lively and an enjoyable listen.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Bing CD!.......2005-02-04

I bought this CD on an impulse quite a few years ago being a big Bing fan (and I now have a LOT of his CD's). If I had to have only one, this one would be it. Wonderful sound. I never thought I'd like Irish tunes so much coming out of Bing.

Buy it. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sound quality!.......2003-07-26

Most Bing fans will have all of these songs already on other CD collections, but this set has truly outstanding sound quality. These are remastered takes and the difference clearly shows. When Bing hits the final high note (singing the word "lullaby") on Too Ra Loo Ra Loo Ral, it's never sounded more crisp, clear and beautiful. There is absolutely no superfluous background noise or hiss on any of these wonderful recordings. My favorite is Bing's version of Danny Boy, which is darn near definitive. Many people prefer a tenor's version to this song, ala Dennis Day, but Bing's baritone owns this song. When Irish Eyes Are Smiling is another gem and the phrasing on this quiet song is exquisite.

Another highlight is the somber, haunting Galway Bay. Again, no one sings this song like Crosby. I highly recommend this CD for novice Crosby fans and even for long-time Bing followers. You will be astounded as the high quality sound. It sounds as if der Bingle is sitting in your living room, singing directly to you. Now that's a fine idea!

5 out of 5 stars Maken & Clancy Collection.......2006-11-04

This group has long brought us the songs of Ireland - both sides. And they continue to do it well.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2005-09-22

This music is a collection of heart-felt songs. There is joy and sadness, delight and despair ... the entire range of feelings ... but mostly there is ... fun ... when listening to "The Makem & Clancy Collection".

These numbers are not just a lot of slick productions ... with their impersonal lyrics and assembly-line melodies. They are (to me) music at its most down-to-earth and its most enjoyable.

"A Place in the Choir" starts things off, and we're led to believe that ... what is to follow will be a standard, harmless series of Irish ballads ... but, the very next song ... "The Cobbler" let's us in on the truth ... and we are taken into the heart of the Makem/Clancy appeal ... the deeply held opinions and feelings of men who care about people.

"The Dutchman" is a beautiful and touching ballad about a simple man and his loving wife. "Willie McBride" is an anti-war statement ... and an effective one. "Morning Glory" is a rousing song with a funny twist. "Ballad of St. Anne's Reel" is a nice song about a traveller. "Gentle Annie" is a heart-felt tribute to, well, Annie. "Rambles of Spring" is an appropriately fun and rollicking song to end the CD (tape) with ... but the gem of the collection is "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda". It sort-of has to catch a hold of you (before you will think it's special), but once it does, you are very much taken by the story and they effective way it is sung.

Some of these songs were recorded live ... the CD is a nice mixture of live and studio recorded music ... and the audience clearly has a deep affection for these boys ... as is easy to understand.

But this CD would make a nice gift ... here is some real music ... as perhaps music was intended to be played.

5 out of 5 stars The Quintessential Folk Album.......2003-02-25

I've listened to this album since childhood, and it is probably the most treasured CD in my collection. In particular, "The Ballad of St. Anne's Reel", "Four Green Fields", "Willie McBride", and "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" stand out. A must have for any Folk and/or Irish music fan.

5 out of 5 stars Jubilation, Joy, Poignancy and Power..........2002-02-10

This is one of the best of the "Clancy Brothers, Tommy Makem, all as a group, some solo albums, some with just two singers, some with moms, grandmas and kids" genre. There are now so many "Clancy/Makem" collections, collaborations, compilations and re-issues of original LP's that it is hard to keep everything straight. This one is just Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem getting lucky and putting out an album in the late 1980's that combined wacky fun and bitter protest and made both succeed. "A Place in the Choir" and "The Garden Song" are bright, brief offerings worth the purchase price all by themselves. But then you get "The Dutchman" and "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" and my favorite of the bitter anti-war songs, "Willie McBride" as well! Everything on this one is listenable, but half are brilliant. If you already like these guys, add this item to the collection. If you want a good introduction to the world of Clancy/Makem, one that shows the innocence as well as the somber side of things Irish, you cannot go wrong buying this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Sajex & Philbin Collection.......2001-08-18

I like Tommy Makem & Liam Clancy and I like their CD Makem & Clancy Collection and it is cool.

This is funny? Sajex & Philbin Collection is silly. Pat Sajex is Tommy Makem and Regis Philbin is Liam Clancy and that is funny if Tommy Makem was Pat Sajex on Wheel of Fortune and Liam Clancy was Regis Philbin on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. That's silly.

The songs I like is The Dutchman, The Garden Song, Willie McBride & Ballad of St. Ann's reel my favorite songs.

This is a cool CD of Makem & Clancy Collection.

3 out of 5 stars A "Collection" Of Great Songs.......2005-10-22

The Irish Rovers were the first celtic band I ever heard and left a lasting impression on me. This record consists of revisits on some of their hits and other great irish tunes.

Will Millar and the late Jimmy Ferguson are no longer part of the lineup, but the new version continues the great tradition of wonderful music. "The Last Of The Irish Rovers" opens the album in rollicking fashion, followed by the best track on the cd, "Star Of The County Down". Joe Millar's signature baritone is found on "My Boy Willie" and "Lovely Isle Of Innisfree". The underrated Wilcil McDowell shines all over, especially on "The Jigs".

"Gypsy Rover", "Muirsheen Durkin (Nancy Whiskey)" continue on, closing up with their trademark "Wasn't That A Party". The Rovers still can sing an irish song better than anyone and their instrumentation surprisingly is almost better than older records. The production on this record is quite good, having some songs almost being overdone. Any fan of the Rovers must pick this up, and if you like irish music and haven't heard of them, do yourself a favor and get acquainted.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Irish song-stories.......2005-05-09

I bought this album for "Unicorn" and "Wasn't That A Party", which were as fun as I remember. The other songs on this album were VERY enjoyable. A couple of slow ballads, a couple of pub songs, and the rest are lively tunes about colorful characters. You don't have to be Irish to enjoy this CD. It'll get your toes tapping!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2003-04-09

This is an album that contains remakes of some of the songs the Irish Rovers have recorded over the years. I am not a big fan of remakes, but this album is an exception. The new arrangements of the old songs are fantastic. Their remake of "The Irish Rover" is the best recording they have made of that song. Their remake of "The Unicorn" captures the feeling of their original 1968 version. If you are thinking of checking out the Irish Rovers in concert, this would be a great album to go by as they still sound as great as they did 35 years ago.

3 out of 5 stars Re-recordings of Irish Rovers' classics.......2002-11-25

Though the Rovers' fame as Irish folk-artists has been eclipsed in the past few decades by The Chieftans, among others, their legacy as an immensely popular act throughout the '60s has allowed them to retain a strong following to this day. Having originally formed in Canada (to which they'd emigrated from various parts of Ireland), they quickly found their way into the folk clubs of the early-1960s USA, where they added Irish roots to the then-booming folk-revival scene.

Most American listeners will know the Rovers only from their 1968 hit single of Shel Silverstein's "The Unicorn," or their early '80s recording of Tom Paxton's "Wasn't That a Party?" But their back catalog is filled with Irish ballads, drinking songs and family stories, accompanied by classic Irish guitar, whistle, accordion and multi-part singing. The Rovers typically avoided political statement (being a mixed band of Protestants and Catholics), though songs like "Orange and Green" do comment obliquely on The Troubles.

This newly recorded release finds the Rovers still in strong voice, and as joyous as ever. Only Will Millar is missing from the original lineup (he left the group in 1995), and new members, John Reynolds, Wallace Hood and Sean O'Driscoll all make strong contributions. These tracks appear to have been recorded in the mid-90s (the liner notes to do not say, but with Millar's absence and Jim Ferguson's presence, and noting that Ferguson passed away in 1997, 1996 seems likely), and revisit many of the Rovers' best-loved songs.

3-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful voice and beautiful music that grows on you .......2006-11-10

This is my first Connie Dover purchase and I can't wait to buy all the rest of her CDs. How could this artist's beautiful voice and delivery not be in the mainstream. Thank you again Accuradio/Radiocelt! I love Connie's story telling--her voice is so clear that you can understand every word she sings! The Holland Handkerchief, Shady Grove and Fear An Bhata all impress in different ways. Ned of the Hill is a special song that may not be your favorite at first but gets better and better each time you hear it. La Fontaine is sung in french and is emotional and touching--the harmonics are haunting. Connie's supporting musical cast compliment her vocal presentation perfectly.

This is the kind of music that grows on you and just gets better and better with each listen. Connie, when is your next CD coming out?

Connie Dover is one of the best celtic singers I have had the pleasure to listen to. I loved the album. I was soothing as well as uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars Evocative, enthralling.......2005-12-07

Here is a wonderful voice, full of purity and presence, singing 11 traditional Irish, Scottish and American songs on 60 minutes of music. This means the songs are longer than the usual 3-minutes-and-out you find on the radio. But frankly I didn't even notice, they are as long as they need to be (except the sweet traditional country tune "Shady Grove", which could be longer).

Connie Dover has a full, clear, rich voice that lets the song shine through even as she lets her voice shape it as it passes. You could not find a greater contrast to a voice like Eva Cassidy's. With Eva, I am sometimes overwhelmed at the stunning power and personality she weaves into her songs, indeed, many have commented that she makes a song her own. Connie Dover makes a song everyone's.

Her voice alone merits 5 stars. But the high quality of the (sometimes melancholy) material and the solid instrumentation are not just bonuses. This is effortless music with lots of musical effort beind it. The song selection is basically from Irish, Scottish and American folk music, with instruments appropriate to the genre. You'll hear some Gaelic and French in the vocals. And always with that pure clear voice.

If you're looking for something away from the rushing waters of American pop music, give her a try. There is a great deal of talent to be found off the main road, here in the backroads of folk music, at its best. "I took the road less traveled by and that has made all the difference." (Robert Frost) Take this road, and see where it takes you.

4 out of 5 stars Love Connie Dover's voice..........2005-07-19

...but haven't gotten into the album yet- in part due to not listening to it enough. I was hoping for a more atmospheric sound as on "Cantus" or "Ubi Caritas" so I think it may take me a while to get used to her more traditional stylings on this album. The country number is neat- a different touch. "Fear an Bhata" is a great opener to the album.

5 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed.......2003-12-30

I still haven't found a Celtic artist I like as much as Connie Dover. Her voice is beautiful, and she never has weak moments. Her diction is perfect, as is her intonation. The instrumental accompaniment always enhances the mood of the song- from piano to fiddle to uillean pipes. Her songs are a nice variety of the older and newer, some with lyrics or melodies she has written herself. The harmonies are beautiful, particularly in La Fontaine. I can't say which of her albums is my favorite, but it might be this one. I listen to all of them frequently.

4 out of 5 stars Missing one gem "Time will cure me".......2006-01-14

Apart from missing the best song they ever recorded (Time will cure me) it's a brilliant CD of trad Irish folk music.
Music to relax and enjoy on a Sunday afternoon or in the car on a weekend drive.

5 out of 5 stars One of my desert island discs.......2004-02-09

I simply never tire of this album. I wore out my vinyl copy; now I'll wear out the CD, if that's possible. Trad Irish music just doesn't get better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Erin Go Braugh!.......2002-02-11

What a brilliant collection! Sure to keep you singing and dancing with a bit 'o blarney in your heart! 5 clovers for this one!

5 out of 5 stars Just the best.......2001-04-01

This CD is worthy of being in any collection of any one who likes to listen to Irish music. The fabulous instrument playing and the range and type of music Planxty have put on this album makes it a must for listening to. I have never tired of it since I bought it back in 89.

5 out of 5 stars Still brilliant after all these years.......2000-10-06

I recently heard Raggle Taggle Gypsy on the radio and remembered how I loved this record when it first came out in the 70s. I still have the old vinyl record somewhere in storage (probably unplayable)and I try to listen to new music rather than buying old things again as CDs but this is one exception. It's still one of the finest collections of Irish music ever put together and has not dated at all! If anything it sounds even stronger now compared to much of the newer stuff coming out of Ireland. That segue from 'RTG' into to 'Tabhair..' is magnificent, leaves me exhilirated every time. Oh.. and I've always wanted to thank Planxty for the highest scoring Scrabble word I ever managed to make!!

This offbeat disc of seasonal songs and carols by the Anonymous 4 will delight their fans and please everyone else. The 19 selections include traditional folk melodies and texts, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, interspersed with fitting selections by contemporary composers including John Taverner, Benjamin Britten, and Peter Maxwell Davies, whose ethereal a cappella A Calender of Kings gets its first recording. Andrew Lawrence-King, playing Irish harp, Baroque harp, and psaltery with his accustomed finesse, is a major reason for the disc's success, accompanying most of the vocals and contributing three lovely solos. The disc is crammed with highlight tracks, like the lilting Cornish Wassail song and the Irish Good people all, and haunting numbers like "Flight into Egypt," sung in Gaelic, and "Behold, here is the best morning," sung in Welsh. Excellent sonics and Harmonia Mundi's typically fine production values also help make this a Christmas disc that will give joy in July. --Dan Davis

The recording is fine . . . it just didn't appeal to me personally

5 out of 5 stars lovely and unusual Yule album.......2004-01-06

Anonymous 4 has brought us a beautiful selection of 19 traditional songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. These include a lesser known work by Henry VIII as well as more contemporary songs by John Tavener, Richard Bennett, Geoffrey Burgon and Benjamin Britten, and a piece commissioned for the group from Peter Davies. Andrew Lawrence-King accompanies on Irish harp, Baroque harp and psaltery. There is a short essay on the traditions and legacy of the concept of Yule, a Cetic midwinter celebration, and this and the informative liner notes are given in English, French and German, accompanied by Celtic drawings.

The songs are pure, simple and very beautiful -- a welcome addition to your holiday listening.

5 out of 5 stars Goose Flesh!.......2003-12-09

This is a remarkable quartet, singing with purity and style, from the haunting to the merry, medieval chant to modern settings of Celtic religious texts. Where there are arrangements, they are lovely and the instrumental pieces are simple and beautiful. This is the first time I have heard this group of women, and I am enchanted. It's a cappella at its very best: look to your laurels, King's Singers and Chanticleer, here come the ladies!

Mary is as beautiful as she sings. This CD is fantastic and she has a voice like no other. I met Mary in Branson Mo.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome....The best album so far!!.......2006-06-17

For those of you who haven't had the privilege of hearing this lady sing in concert, you have missed a rare treat! She walks out on stage and claims your heart, she is a lovely, graceful Irish singer whose voice you will never forget. She walks out and sings "Amazing Grace" with little to no accompaniment, and there is not a sound in the theatre and you are left breathless and with goose bumps at the finish. Her fans are devoted and myriad, she is an international star, and still meets her fans personally after a show, is natural and down to earth, a sweet, gracious lady. This is a great two disc CD with 39 songs, and the production on this particular album is phenomenal. On Timeless, a duet with Daniel O'Donnell, it is a breathtaking rendition with horns and a great band backing them up. On songs like More Than I Can Say and We'll Meet Again, her voice is simply made for this kind of music, although I have to say she can sing anything....from American country....I never thought I would say that someone could sing Stand By your Man (not on this CD) better than Tammy W. but this lady can, and does in concert all over the USA when she tours with Daniel O'Donnell (as a regular for over 18 years now) She has been voted Best British Female Vocalist more times than I can count. She is amazing in concert...(Check Branson shows in November) "Time to Learn" and "Cliffs of Dooneen" will stir the emotions....and she simply does the best rendition of Amazing Grace I've ever heard. This collection is great, she has just released a new collection called Time After Time that friends tell me is just as good as this one...
Her duet on this collection with Daniel "Secret Love" is a standard in their concerts together, and it is the perfect showcase for the range of her voice.....and it will amaze you. My husband is not a fan of this type of music (he likes rock) but he is blown away by her voice. I would highly recommend getting this collection as an introduction if you've never heard her. If you're a fan of Mary's, you already know that no words can adequately describe how outstanding her voice is, how she is high and shoulders over the rest when it comes to singing. She does American country songs better than the originals....and that's saying a lot in my book.
I don't think you can go wrong buying this..it is great value for 2 discs with 39 songs, but the greatest value is in hearing this "lady" sing!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Harvest.......2003-06-12

Of the other wonderous titles in this anthological masterpiece, I find one stands out. A mix of modern celtic rhythms and a bit o' electronica makes The Harvest an extremely valuable song to top off the collection at #13. Her old works are very rhythmic and easy to dance to if one must, and I certainly recommend this to anyone in search of a modern interpretation of Irish music.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating overview of Ivers' career -- so far.......2000-12-15

This CD shows Ivers' evolution from a superb fiddler in the traditional style to the virtuoso of "Riverdance." The earlier tracks are fascinating (even if the recording quality isn't up to contemporary standards), and the later selections show off her range and depth as a musician. I felt that "The Harvest" fell rather flat: like other Irish fiddlers (e.g., Tommy Peoples), Ivers incorporates the friction between the bow, the strings, and the neck of the fiddle into her characteristic sound (cf. the "Lament for Staker Wallace"), and the electric pickup doesn't capture this. Otherwise, the CD is enjoyable throughout -- although if you already own "Fresh Takes" and "Wild Blue" (as I did), you'll find it mostly of historical interest.

5 out of 5 stars The epitome of celtic fiddling.......2000-06-14

This album contains recordings from Eileen Ivers teenage years through the mid 90's. It is a wonderful compilation and clearly demonstrates how she has grown as an artist. My favorite track is Kerryman's Daughter/Lord Gordon's for while it lacks layers and sophistication, both traditional songs are played flawlessly. Pachelbel's Frolics comes in a close second though with it's improvisation on a widely played classical piece. The album as a whole, is an excellent example of Eileen Iver's magnificent celtic fiddling.
