There's an old quote of St. Theresa's that goes something like, "More tears are shed over answered prayers than those that remain unanswered." In other words, be careful what you wish for--you just might get it. Don McLean, like any other singer-songwriter, no doubt wanted a hit, or some degree of success. "American Pie" gave him that and more. McLean's ode to Buddy Holly began with a folky intro that sounded like a protest song. Almost nine minutes later the song finally ends. Sure the song's poetic, sure it's a touching tribute, and sure, it's undeniably a classic. But it also became the bane of McLean's existence for many years as it was the only one of his songs that people wanted to hear. American Pie the album sold well on the strength of the title track, and even propelled the comparatively weak "Vincent" into the Top 20. A fine release rooted in folk, American Pie is a classic, whether anyone actually pays attention to the other songs or not. The 2003 reissue includes two bonus tracks—"Mother Nature" and "Aftermath." --Steve Gdula

Don McLean's great use of rhythm and verse make this album a true treasure.

His songs remain unforgettable. His style completely distinct and seperated from his contemporaries.

Lastly, the emotion, his own emotions are captured so precisely and sweetly poetic.

It would be a shame if today's youth were not exposed to this collection of his songs.

This album is totally underrated and to some, forgotten. It is not only a classic for the gifted Don McLean; it is a heartfelt piece of poetry that you will listen to over and over again. I find some nuance, some depth of understanding and musical beauty each time I listen.
Songs like EMPTY CHAIRS, VINCENT, and even SISTER FATIMA are poetry set to music, and life experiences that most of us can identify with.
BRAVO, DON McLEAN - You still rock after more than 30 years!

Doubters who expect little from Celine Dion but turgid ballads will be surprised by her return to recording after several years. On A New Day Has Come, the big production numbers most associated with the Canadian superstar's name ("My Heart Will Go On," "Because You Loved Me") are evoked by the two versions of "I Surrender" and somewhat lifeless covers of "At Last" and "Nature Boy." At the same time, though, Dion shows her willingness to stretch on the classic-house homage "Sorry for Love" and the unavoidably catchy "Right in Front of You" and "Ten Days." The album's unexpected, often low-key production allows Dion to emote in a straightforward way that gracefully skirts the chest thumping of past days, and the relative subtlety works in her favor. Still, New Day will hardly prove a shocker for her many fans. Crowning the conservative Dion a forward-thinking diva seems a bit premature, but this agreeable record opens the door to such a possibility. --Rickey Wright

In 2002, a year after her son Rene-Charles was born, Celine Dion offered the album which marked an interesting change in her career. While in the 1990's she gradually rose from a talented, already successful singer (witness the 1992 eponymous album) to the superstar of the highest high rank (thanks to her best ever "Falling Into You" and blockbusting though too saccharine Titanic-propelled "Let's Talk About Love"), this CD appeared after a hiatus of over two years. This interruption was initially planned to last longer, but the songbird clearly could not wait to return to the studio and share her fresh-mommy joy with the world.

The album debuted on No.1 slot of the US chart alright and in other countries it was also expected with feverish anticipation (too many of us missed her), but received rather a cold reception from the critics and, interestingly, did not get a single Grammy nomination. Despite this, Celine's "New Day" was really new -- in a positive sense!

Put simply, Dion's new situation life obviously helped her infuse the generous set of 17 songs with an incredibly believable dose of palpable emotions. Beside the title track, an ode to the relationship with the new baby, this is nowhere more evident than in the ode to motherly love, the Mutt Lange-penned "Goodbye's (The Saddest Word)", where Celine, the youngest of 14 siblings apparently draws from a relationship with her own mom. Dion's singing on ballads is less melismatic (and thus less annoying -- this was a problem with "Let's Talk About Love"), ballads are sublime, many of them truly beautiful ("Have You Ever Been In Love", "Prayer"), and faster songs are more numerous than on "Let's Talk About Love", making the record varied and not too long even at almost 73 minutes (European version) of playing time. Nice, if not particularly memorable are the diva's shots at two standards -- Etta James' "At Last" and "Nature Boy", fresh off the then film-hit "Moulin Rouge".

A year after this, Celine put out another, this time a too ordinary CD for her standard, "One Heart", and her devotion to motherhood cause continued on Anne Geddes mono-thematic collab "Miracle". None of the two achieved the overall quality of "New Day", which, although employing less-known songwriters and having spawned no major hits, still remains the best Celine Dion CD of the new millennium so far.

This has turned out to be the best CD i own. All the songs are awesome. I listened to celine before but never bought a cd of hers. Now i want to buy all of them. It came quickly and it's amazing

It's because she's good. Celine Dion has become one of the most famous diva popsters of all time, and this album showcases some of her most satisfying and memorable songs, from the soaring "I Surrender" to the rivetingly catchy "I"m Alive" and "Right in Front of You". Her hauntingly beautiful rendition of "Goodbye's (The Saddest Word)" is an enduring classic, and virtually every song on this disc can be played over and over without losing its flavor. She does descend into showy histrionics a few times("At Last" and "The Wrong One Loves You Right") but overall an intensely satisfying and glorious collection. Her "A New Day has Come" and "I'm Alive" are two of my favorite songs of all time, with their rhythmic affirmation of life and hope. A good introduction for new fans and a must for any old one.

This is Definetly My Favourite Album from Celine Dion, From 2002, and Ultimatly One of my Favourite Albums of All Time...
The Album as a Whole is Extremely Solid, with not just Great singles, but Great music throughout the Album.
This Album was obviously very personal to Celine. This was the start of a New Chapter in her life. The Song "A New Day Has Come" is about the birth of her baby son, whilst tracks like "Goodbye" is about the loss of her mother. This is one of the reasons why it is such a Masterpiece, because Celine felt the songs and because the songs were personal they are able to touch the people listening to them, who may be in the same circumstances.
I Am Writing this Review as I listen to the album and here is my rating of my fave tracks - 15 out of the 17 Tracks on the Album.

1."I'm Alive" - This song is just that. It makes you feel Alive. It is Upbeat and Uplifting. It has a Beautiful Melody and Rhythm. The lyrics are also beautiful, and it's no wonder this song became a single, as it is one of the best on the album. It's my 2nd Fave on the Album.
It talks about the feeling you get when the one you love is around you and you get an energy of them. The Song captures this Feeling Perfectly.

When You look At Me I Can Touch The Sky.

2. "Right In Front Of You" - Is Another great song about having faith to find love in your life. It just sounds great and uplifting like the previous track. "Love Can Withstand A Storm. In The Final Hour We'll Find The Joy In Living." It sounds very Canadian. 4/5

3. "Have You Ever Been In Love" - This is a Beautiful Ballad and a single from the Album.It sounds very Jazz type and has A Beautiful Melody. The Lyrics are Even more beautiful

4. "Rain Tax" is a good Pop Song. The Lyrics aren't great, but it has a good tune. It's Inevitable she would fall in love with the man in the song she is singing about. "When You See What I Want. What I Want Is You" - 4/5

5. "A New Day Has Come" - This is the Radio Version, and is my Favourite version. My Favourite Track On The Album. Its A Pop Ballad, and has A Wonderful message. It talks about the Birth of her New Son. It has the Most Beautiful Lyrics

6. "Ten Days" - This is Quite A Good song. It's not the best on the album, but it's good. - 3/5

7. "Goodbye[The Saddest Word]" - This is a song about Celine's mother, who passed away while she was recording this album. The song is Beautiful, but I Can't help but feel sad when I Listen to it.

8. "Prayer" is a Beautiful song that says how Children are Our Future, and how they should rejoyce and cherish life. Even though Sombre at times it is still Happy and Uplifting, with a Blatant Message of Hope. 4/5

9. "I Surrender" is a Good song about Surrendering everything to have A New Love, and Begin a Better Life. It's A Pretty good song. Geline Sings Well In It Too. 4/5

10. "Super Love" is Quite A Good Song, that Borders on Pop and Dance. It Talks about not settling for less in a relationship. "Some People Never Find Out, How It Feels To Be Feeling No Doubt" It's Not Great, nor Is One Of The Albums High points, but It's not Worth Skipping either. 3/5

11. "Sorry For Love" is one Of The Albums High Points. It's A Great Dance Song, and has A Great bridge where Celine holds a Powerful note for at least 10 seconds. One of My Favourites. 5/5

12. "Aun Existe Amour" is a Beautiful Spanish song. Celine's Vocals sound beautiful in this song. It also has Beautiful Instramentation. Beautiful Piano Chords and Sounds very Spanish and Lush. Beautiful is the only word that will describe it. This is Another Favourite of Mine. 5/5

13. "The Greatest Reward" is Another Beautiful ballad. The Lyrics are also Heartfelt.

The Sound Of Your Voice. And The Touch Of Your Hand.
You Make Me Who I Am."
A True Essence Of Love Is Captured In This Song. 5/5

15. is The Original Version of "A New Day Has Come". This Version is Beautiful, But I Preffer The Radio Remix.

Overall This Is A Great Album, and ALL CELINE DION FANS AND MUSIC LOVERS SHOULD OWN IT. The Best time of Day to Listen to this Album is The Early Morning, Just as The Sun Is Rising. A New Day Really Has Come When You're Listing to this Record...And You'll Be Glad To Be Alive!

There is a difference between being an inspired musician and an informed musician. Sting is the latter. As always, he surrounds himself with ultratalented artists: this time around Stevie Wonder, Branford Marsalis, James Taylor, guitarist Dominic Miller, and the prince of rai Cheb Mami, fill the roster. Brand New Day exhibits about as many musical styles as there are tracks, all encased in dense, meticulous production. The album begins promisingly. "A Thousand Years" pulses atop a lush, two-note foundation. "A Desert Rose" folds trilling Algerian pop into trip-hop. Melodic, late-night jazz ballads dominate the middle portion of the collection. But Sting's preoccupation with odd-numbered time signatures prevents the songs from grooving, while the choruses are yawns. "Fill Her Up" (no, not "Fill 'Er Up"), a country tune, represents Sting at his most self-indulgent. Listening to one of the wealthiest musicians in pop singing "Got no money to invest / Got no prospect / Or education / I was lucky to get the job at this gas station" requires a heroic suspension of disbelief. The song morphs into this gospel number where Sting and a supporting chorus chant "You gotta fill 'er up with Jesus! / You gotta fill her up with life!" Being the Sting fan that I am. This has become my favorite Sting CD. Aa a matter of fact this is my second copy, I wore out the first one!
There is something on this CD for everyone, every mood and a great long drive CD.

How can you not like Sting? I happen to really like this CD. His selections of songs on this CD are great and wonderful to listen to.

Better than what I was anticipating........2006-08-30

However, rather bland sounding at best. I found "A Thousand Years" a rather good piece, "Desert Rose" was decent, but not all that great, the rest was all forgettable, and showed that this was just an excuse to put out an album to fufill a record contract. The album comes to a horrible end with the title track which paralyzed me in depression. I'm not sure wheter the single version, or the album version is worse, but to me I know that anyway you slice it it's just enough to make me cry. I know that pretty much Sting made the comment in 1988 that he didn't give a F**K about rock and roll, but in 1991 he comes back with a more pop sounding album, and it continues in 1993, and in 1996 he comes out with "Mercury Uprising", and it has a rock sound to it, but here he decides he's caught in a lie, and now decides to cover it up with numerous musical influences, and it doesn't wash.

Is Sting worse than Billy Joel ?.......2006-08-22

10 years ago I would have said " no it is impossible for anyone who has not actually committed a serious crime to be worse than Billy Joel". Today I know better. Sting has almost single handedly destroyed the ears and the soul of an entire generation of yuppies.

On the other hand Clapton probably stinks louder than even Sting.

Sting - BRAND NEW DAY (1999).......2006-07-12

Sting seemed to be on a roll in the early 90s, with his masterpiece THE SOUL CAGES and the outstanding TEN SUMMONER'S TALES. Unfortunately, his winning streak ended with 1996's MERCURY FALLING, a pretentious, unextraodinary addition to Sting's musical portfolio. In 1999, however, Sting made his comeback in a big way with BRAND NEW DAY. It was the ex-Police frontman's first venture into techno music, which he would continue to explore on his subsequent release, SACRED LOVE. Along with the exotic "Desert Rose", a surprise smash hit for the 50-something musician, there's a variety of delightful songs, including the hyptonic "A Thousand Years", the irresistible "After The Rain Has Fallen", and the mega-upbeat title tune. The album has a few oddities - "Tomorrow We'll See", about a transvestite hooker, redeemed by its shady bass line, and the cringeworthy, pretentious "Fill Her Up", undoubtedly the worst song of Sting's entire career - but for the most part, it's a delightful melding of jazz, alt rock and techno. Over thirty years after a band called The Police burst on to the music scene, Sting still rocks.

This show that Celine does in Vegas, is a must see show. She is outstanding, and performs outstanding. She wears the most beautiful clothes. I have seen her show 8 times, and going in August, and have tickets for her last show on Dec. 15th. This will be the show of all shows in Vegas. There will never be an other singer that will TOP CELINE DION. Susan

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Super Hits of the '70s: Have a Nice Day, Vol. 1- The initial release of the series made a solid splash for its consistency and musical diversity.

The volumes become a portable jukebox with any selection a memory of yesteryear. The opening track "More Today Than Yesterday" by the Spiral Starecase could be a Stevie Wonder composition. The production is tremendous and the vocals resonate from the speakers.

"Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" from Steam became not only a hit single but a sports anthem. Played at hundreds of venues after the home team would have a victory in hand the tune is going to soon celebrate its fortieth birthday but not look older than one.

"Venus" - (The Shocking Blue) The opening second keyboard sound is hypnotic. It had hit written all over.

"Come Saturday Morning" By the Sandpipers has one of the best vocal performances ever. A timeless tune that could never outstay its welcome.

The only pitfall with the entire series is the playing time should fill up a CD. That is why bonus track were invented. Excluding the clock, this a wonderful ride to the past.

In my opinion: Twenty Three out of the Twenty Five versions of this, Super Hits Of The 70s; Have A Nice Day, series have their ups and downs and some are better than others and there are several one and two hit wonders on them but the bottom line is this.... Volume One IS Number One and Volume Two is right along beside it. In otherwords; if both volumes were playing against each other in a ballgame the game would most definitely end in a tie. From start to finish those two are solid and the quality of the music is nothing less than fabulous.
This Vol. One starts out with Spiral Staircase's, More Today Than Yesterday, and it most definitely will have you singing along with it.
The second song is, Baby It's You, from the excellent band Smith. Gayle McCormick's bluesy vocals sound fantastic on this tune, which was also a good song for The Beatles on their American LP called The Early Beatles from 1965 plus it was a huge hit for The Shirelles.
The third song is a very beautiful tune which made it to the top five in November 1969 and will melt your heart being, Smile A Little Smile For Me, by The Flying Machine. Folks;I think I remember a slightly different version of this song by The Flying Machine then what is on this disc. Correct me if I am wrong.
The fourth song is by the great Billy Joe Royal called, Cherry Hill Park. Billy Joe Royal a one or two hit wonder?.....No Way! .The fifth song is Steams immortal, Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye. This gem is an Anthem and reached # one in December 1969 and most all of us have sung it at one time or another. Especially at a ballgame. Bannarama had a hit with this song in the 80s.
The sixth song is, Venus, by The Shocking Blue which was a huge smash for this band. Bananarama also had a smash hit in 1986 with this one.
The seventh song is Vanity Fare's charming, Early In The Morning. Vanity Fare also has a timeless classic on Vol.Two.
The eighth song is by Mark Lindsay being, Arizona. That song was Mark's first solo hit. As several of you already know; Mark also sang lead vocals for Paul Revere And The Raiders.
The ninth song went all the way to # Two in March 1970 being, The Rapper, by The Jaggerz. A fantastic song by a great band from Pittsburgh.
The tenth song is a beautiful romantic ballad that was nominated for an Oscar called, Come Saturday Morning, by The Sandpipers. It was also featured on the Motion Picture The Sterile Cuckoo with Liza Minilli.
The eleventh song is a very nice bubblegummy like tune by The Cuff Links called, Tracy. This Gem was sung by Ron Dante who also sang lead for The Archies.
And last but definitely not least this disc also has the rockin, Mississippi Queen, by Mountain.
These songs hit their peak between June 1969 and July 1970 and this is definitely a five star disc. As an aging Babyboomer I can say that I still love the music and these twelve songs are twelve more reasons why I still do.
Do I have a favorite tune on this Volume One compilation?.....Yes.....All twelve of them! If you like music from this era this Volume is a must.

Before the advent of online services like imusic.com, Rhino Records was THE label for re-releasing old material. As a lifelong music junkie (I own every Top 10 song from 1963 to 1975), I bought at least twenty of their Have A Nice Day series. Not every song is a winner, but many of these songs were not--at least at the time--heavily anthologized.

Were all of these big hits? No. But it's nice to hear Vanity Fares first hit, "Early in the Morning" (No. 12), than the overplayed "Hitchin' a Ride." "Mississippi Queen" only made it to No. 21, but the song rocks! "Come Saturday Morning" (from the movie The Sterile Cuckoo w/ Liza Minnelli) didn't fare much better at No. 17, but again it's a song you get on few other collections.

The big hits were No. 1's like "Venus," "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)," and the million-sellers like "The Rapper" and "Arizona." One of the most enduring songs of the bunch is the one-hit-wonder "More Today Than Yesterday" by the Spiral Starecase. [Check the spelling on that one...amazon.com has it right! It is NOT staircase!]

What would motivate anyone to buy this? Simple...nostalgia. I was a teenager when these songs hit the charts, and they all have a sentimental value to this day. My only gripe is that the playing time on these is pretty short with only twelve songs filling up less than half the disc space. [It was even worse on the cassette version when you got only 10 songs.]

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Volume 2 tries to equal the predecessor. While Volume 1 has better consistency, there are enough essential tracks here. Spirit In The Sky - Norman Greenbaum is still getting airplay today not only on the oldies stations but on classic rock. Reflections Of My Life - The Marmalade with some of the most intense lyrics ever presents a song of both beauty and articulation.

"Hitchin' A Ride"- Vanity Fare is an example of the great days of Top 40. There would be a plethora of memorable tunes that we would call on decades later.

As you give each of the twelve songs a listen see if it brings you back to a specific event or time in your life. Excluding the CD not being filled to capacity, you'll LOVE THE 70's!

All in all a great anthology. Minor correction on the Tony Burrows comments; he had nothing to do with Hitching A Ride (by Vanity Faire). However, he was also the lead vocalist on Beach Baby (First Class) and My Baby Loves Lovin' (White Plains).

All good songs on the CD! As for them being AM Radio tunes, thats where Top 40 was located. Many cars did not even have FM mono radios in them yet by 1972! Also nice to know, Tracks 1, 8, 9 and 10 are ALL sung by the same artist. I believe his name was Tony Burrows & he was from Great Britain. He also had a hit with a little novelty tune titled "Gimmie Dat Ding".

This Is A Very Good Volume Of The Have A Nice Day Series !.......2005-09-16

This Volume 2 of the Have A Nice Day series is another nice trip down memory lane and to me it is definately the co-star of the series with Volume 1 being the other. Every song on this Volume 2 peaked in 1970 and I previously owned most of these songs either on Vinyl or tape back in the day and it is great to hear them once again. Vanity Fare's Top Five Smash, Hitchin A Ride, and The Poppy Family's, Which Way You Goin Billy, have always been all-time favorites of mine along with the # 1 hit, Everything Is Beautiful, by the great Ray Stevens and the Top 15 smash, United We Stand, by The Brotherhood Of Man. Everything Is Beautiful, and, United We Stand, are songs of Love, Peace, Hope, Beauty and Unity and they still touch me when I listen to them. Both have very Powerful Lyrics and they Stand Tall even today. Every song on this Volume from the first which is Edision Lighthouse's, Love Grows ( Where My Rosemary Goes ), to the last which is Robin McNamara's, Lay A Little Lovin On Me, is great.
Final Note; As good as a lot of the music is today; these tunes of long ago are still very special to me. Like all Rhino compilations this CD sounds great and evidently this Volume 2 is out of print and starting to become rare.....Why?.....I don't know because I still think it is one of the two best of the series !.....Highly Recommended

Not total garbage but mostly one hit wonders that were really light weight AM radio fare when they were first released. Who knows some of these songs will probably end up in a Tarantino movie I suppose and then they will be cool...

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

It's not a bad CD. There are songs that would pair well with Radar Love, My Girl Bill and Rock Me Gently aren't two of them. That said, it's not a bad disc from which to make another. Burned it to my hard drive and made a great CD using this others from the "Have A Nice Day" series. Wish I could afford them all.

unusual mix.......2006-01-08

You have the great- Golden Earring, Dave Loggins,Maria Muldaur and the good, Jim Stafford, Wet Willie, mixed in with the just awful. Andy Kim would top the awful list with bo donaldson getting 2 turkeys on one disc. Theres a reason we haven't heard further from First class and Billy Swan too. Just like listening to the radio in 1974 I guess- the good the bad and the ugly.

This 70's collaberation of pop hits is one of many in this series. This particular one just so happens to have some titles that are really hard to locate by themselves. You can also impress your friends with your uncanny ability of music knowledge when you rattle off the artist when you hear these songs on the radio. Bill Whitt

I initially purchased this CD by accident as a speedy checkout buy. I was concerned about the quality of the CD, but was very pleased when I was able to play through "my songs" without incident.

I'm mystified about how this can be one of the biggest selling HAND volumes. I think "Smoke From A Distant Fire" is passable 70s shlock, but the rest looks pathetically bad. I guess it's "Disco Duck", "Devil Woman", and "Get Closer" that reels them in.

This is by far the worst volume in this entire series.There's nothing here even of remote intrest or talent. This CD rates a zero(A CD full of one hit losers!)I believe it's OOP. Thank god.

Since there are so many good songs on "Super Hits of the '70's - Have A Nice Day Vol. 20", hitting the continuation button on your stereo is highly recommended for a number of reasons. Volume 20 of this 25 volume series spotlights the pop/Top 40 hits from 1976-'77. There are untimely classic ballads of the tear-jerker variety found in Peter McCann's "Do You Wanna Make Love" (released in the late summer of '77) and in Engelbert Humperdinck's "After The Lovin'" (released at the beginning of '77). Continuing through the ballads, Seals & Crofts feature one of their final chart hits from late summer '76 with the up close and personal "Get Closer", while Mac Davis's "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me" predates this collection of hits by some four to five years, with a release date of 1972. A hits collection wouldn't be a hits collection without the smooth, mellow vocal stylings of Cliff Richard, whose ghoulish smash hit "Devil Woman", is featured in this wonderful array of mostly late '70's favorites. Of David Geddes' two 1975 chart hits titled "Run Joey Run" (which can be found on Vol. 15) and "The Last Game of the Season (A Blind Man In The Bleachers)", the former tune is just downright crude and horrible, while the latter track is warm and sentimental, and therefore, fits rather snuggily into this collection with ease. Boomer Castleman's "Judy Mae" is the only weak entry of the bunch, whose lyrics sound a bit too "Hatfields and McCoys"-ish to suit me. Los Angeles based trio Hot had their only hit titled "Angel In Your Arms", which shows up here, and is yet another delightful ballad. This wouldn't be a true '70's collection without at least one disco song - that being "Disco Duck (Part I)", provided in a wacky style that only Rick Dees And His Cast Of Idiots can bring to the disco table. One-hit wonders Smokie had a major hit with "Living Next Door To Alice" in early '77. "Alice" was written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, both of whom went on to even bigger glory as songwriters in the late '70's/early '80's for such artists as Exile, Bonnie Tyler and others. Smokie frontman Chris Norman teamed up with Suzi Quatro on the later hit "Stumblin' In (found on Vol. 22). If you're into '50's nostalgia, there's Dean Friedman's "Ariel" to whet your appetite. If there is a best song on this CD, that honor should rightfully go to The Sanford/Townsend Band's one and only hit smash, the jazzy-bluesy "Smoke From A Distant Fire". With so many good songs to choose from in this stalwart collection of marvelous compositions, "Have A Nice Day Vol. 20" is one CD you'll definitely come back to time and again. If you're a completist, you'll need this one in your must have, must own collection. Keep in mind that each CD in this series has its own style of songs to suit different musical tastes, so it's not necessary to collect all 25 CD's. On that note, it is most wise to pick and choose your favorites as you go along. "Vol. 20" is a sure-fire winner!

For those of you who can remember the 70's, this CD provides some great memory releasers (assuming you have fond memories of the 70's). It's a nice collection of some of the hits of the 70's that were not necessarily Blockbusters. Some of these songs are seldom played on radio stations these days, so you may have forgotten all about them (again, assuming you were there in the first place). So, if you are a very young man like me in your late 40's, this CD may just push your buttons! And if you are much younger, well, you may just catch some great music that your parents listened to decades ago!

+ 1/2 stars...More Big Hits Than the Previous Volumes.......2004-02-29

What Rhino's Have a Nice Day series does, is put together a collection not of the biggest hits by the biggest stars, but rather an eclectic collection of big (and not so big) hits by artists who for the most part had very brief careers on the charts. And with volume 10 (which focuses mostly on 1973), they continue to do a very good job.

A noticeable difference with this volume, however, is how many of these were in fact huge hits. All but two of them cracked the Top 10. The first that did not is folk artist Loudon Wainwright's tribute to road kill, "Dead Skunk." [Though this was his lone hit, he continues to record to this day and has a legion of rabid fans--myself included. (Check out my review of his latest SO DAMN HAPPY.)] The other answers the question "What did Looking Glass do to follow up with their No. 1 hit "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)?" The answer is their No. 33 (and last) hit "Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne."

Sometimes it's better to have been just a one-hit wonder. Albert Hammond had a million-seller with "It Never Rains in Southern California," and Stealers Wheel (which included Gerry Rafferty) hit the Top 10 with the infectious "Stuck in the Middle With You." But does anyone remember either of their follow-up hits? [Answer: It was "I'm a Train" (No. 31) and "Star" (No. 29 ) respectively. ("Star" shows up on vol. 12.)]

A couple of the one-hit wonders pulled off the ultimate by taking their only charting single all the way to No. 1. Vicki "Mama's Family" Lawrence did it with "The Night That the Lights Went Out In Georgia," as did Stories' song of interracial love "Brother Louie."

Other one-hit wonders that seldom get anthologized are the 30s-inspired "Oh, Babe, What Would You Say?," Edward Bear's heart-wrenching "Last Song," and Skylark's romantic "Wildflower." [Trivia alert: David Foster, a member of Skylark, went on to be a top producer of hits like "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" and "St. Elmo's Fire."]

All things considered, there's a lot of memories in these songs--some you probably haven't heard since they were hits on the radio. The only reason I've never been able to give any of these a four-star rating (or higher) is the limited bang for your buck that Rhino gives you. Yeah, the smiley face CD is cute, and the liner notes are filled with trivia...but the bottom line is that you are only getting a dozen songs! With that in mind, it's simply a matter of how many memories does THIS particular batch of songs have for you?

Good old Rock and Roll.......2003-07-29

It is hard to find a bad CD in this anthology series, if you are a true fan of 70's Rock and Roll. The diversity of selections in the series is extraordinary. This volume has a number of songs that make you want to sing your heart out along with the group. The best in this category are "Cover of the Rolling Stone" by one of my favorite groups, Dr Hook, "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray, and "Oh Babe, What Would You Say?" by Hurricane Smith. But almost all the songs in this volume have their good points and I would rate 9 of them in the "I want" category. This CD is well worth the price as are most of the other CD's in this series.

I had been searching for a song that has been running through my mind since the 1970's. I found that song on this cd, it was Oh, Babe, What Would You Say?! This cd has IMO 7 very good songs.(1,2,3,5,7,8, and 12) It also has 3 decent songs. (6,9,10). It has one below average song, (4) and one song that I had never heard before. (11) The two biggest surprises to me were 8 and 12. I very much like both of those songs, but I didn't reconize them by song title. Drift Away goes like this Singing:: Give me the beat boys, to soothe my soul...I want to get lost in your Rock N roll and drift away.... I would also recommend vol 14 and 21 in this series and THE BABYS ANTHOLOGY with great songs like ,"Isn't it time, Back on my feet again, and Midnight Rendezvous" Everytime I think of you and Anytime is good too. If you liked John Waite in the 1980's, you should like the BABY'S as John was the lead singer of the Baby's in 1975. John's 1984 hit was Missing You. Indy :o)
