Richard Thompson is a big fan of fellow Englishman Jez Lowe, and you don't often get a better recommendation than that. He's got good reason to like him, as Lowe writes some pretty great songs. He and his band then knock them out with British Isles fervor, dressing up arrangements with a plethora of acoustic instruments including cittern, mandolin, dulcimer, harmonica, fiddle, string bass, and pennywhistle. The result is an irresistible, and irrepressibly English, thinking-man's dance party. Lowe scores extra high marks on the lilting yet driving "Glad Rags Again," the gentle "Sod All," and the jaunty "Limping Drinker's Polka." --Michael Ruby

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth Noticing.......2001-03-05

I was fortunate enough to catch Jez when he was passing through Portland, OR recently. He was outstanding. I would have loved to have also seen the Bad Pennies as well, but it's hard to take your group with you when you've got a folkie budget.

Jez has a very fine and expressive tenor. His musicianship and that of the Bad Pennies is quite good. The lyrics of the songs range from very good to outstanding. On this album, I especially like "The Parish Notices", "Glad Rags Again", "Propping", "Idle Time", and "Had Away, Gan On." The rhythms of the songs are quite infectious--in a good sense.

He also has just come out with a double CD called "Live at the Davy Lamp." Hopefully, it will be available in the U.S. shortly. It has the very excellent cuts, "Just Like Moses" and "The Bergen." It's a very addictive double CD.

Check out Jez and see if you like him. If you do, pass the word around. He deserves much more public notice than he's getting in the U.S. I first heard him, like a previous reviewer, on NPR.

    5 out of 5 stars Top Notch.......2001-02-08

I bought this album because it had a sticker on it that said that Richard Thompson thought Jez Lowe was the greatest thing since sliced bread, and gOd bless him, he was right. Lowe is a folkie straight out of the Thompson tradition, with a somewhat more Celtic feel. This is his finest album, excellent from beginning to end. Lowe's fine singing is made more appealing by his accent, which he himself mocks (`a Scotsman said my songs were shite and me accent was a scandal and the only true born Johnny's left were Sting and Johnny Handle'-you have to love lyrics like that!). His songs are insightful and richly detailed, and his feel for the material is obvious. He is especially good with material describing the trials of the common man (More sample lyrics: `you spent your life in the land of plenty while I've spent mine where the bowls are empty...blood's no thicker than the cold no North Sea no more'). It's rare that you find a folkie this good and this lively. His music swoons and it bounces, it is catchy to the point of irresistible and so danceable you'll be tempted to get up and go every time you here it. Will please fans of The Proclamers, Bap Kennedy, The Irish Rovers and Nick Lowe. Standouts include `Glad Rags Again', `Propping' `Spitting Cousins' and `Had Away, Gan On'. Unconditionally recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one!!!.......1999-02-17

Without a doubt, my favorite album from 1998. Jez covers every emotion in this release and a couple I wasn't expecting. After listening to this music on and off over the last six months or so, I still find myself humming tunes from it. Treat yourself!

    5 out of 5 stars brilliant songwriting.......1998-10-29

Jez Lowe is an amazing songwriter who writes his own British Isles folk tunes that sound like old traditional songs as handed down by Elvis Costello. A delight for fans of Celtic music and singer/songwriters alike. A great record.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful lyrics and melodies.......1998-09-11

Heard this artist for the first time on NPR a few months ago. Have been very happy with the CD. Melodies are compelling and lyrics are moving/fun. And - my 9 and 6 year old love it too.
