Customer Reviews:
Excellent harp playing, orchestra falls short.......2002-08-15
Listening to the Gliere Harp Concerto you would probably be shocked to learn that it was written as late as 1938. The orchestral scoring and musical development comes straight from the Russian romantic school of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. Melodies and harmonies are straight-forward. The harp greets you right at the outset, making the first musical statement with rolling chords topped by sweeping scales. It is very moving: Rachel Masters very very craftily helps the harp stand out from the orchestral texture, making you hear what is important. Having now said wonderful things about the music and the harp player, I must report that the orchestra falls a bit short. Textures are thin, failing to match the sweeping and rich nature of the music, and intonation is always questionable (there is a dreadful chord in the slow movement). There is a recording of this work by one of London's better orchestras (the LSO) on London records, and I would hope that recording is superior to this one.
The Gliere piece for soprano receives more justice than the harm concerto. Eileen Huse, sustains her lines very well, leaping large intervals effortlessly. Her voice is neither overpowering nor throaty; it glides and blends with the orchestra wonderfully, especially with the woodwinds, every phrase has a beautiful arch. Her entrances on high notes are beautful, so soft sometimes that you don't hear the entrance. WOW, can she sustain the high notes in a beautiful line! She also has great command over articulation. Really incredible, and this is the best performance on the CD. (The last note is the F above the treble staff!!)
The Ginastera Concerto is another masterpiece, and again I wish the orchestra could muster more power and crisper articulation. Ginastera's music is tantalizing, making use of Latin American rhythms and a wide range of percussion instruments. Again, the solo harp part is beautifully written and beautifully played. There is excellent balance between the orchestra and the harp--the harp's presence is always felt and never overpowered. Some of the more mysterious sections are very effective, strings and woodwinds at the opening of the second movement are exquisite.
But in the tutti orchestral sections, it would be nice to hear fuller, sharper, and more driven playing from the orchestra.
A very nice album with great music and great soloists. You will enjoy it.
Must Buy!.......2001-04-11
I first heard this recording on a local FM station, and had to buy the CD. It's a beautiful work, and an excellent performance.

Alwyn (1905-85) is one of the more neglected British composers of this century. His music, as presented on this Chandos state-of-the-art release, successfully avoids the lushly lyrical specter of Vaughan Williams. (Alwyn sometimes takes deep bows to Vaughn Williams with his occasional use of atonality, particularly in his symphonies and works for string orchestra). These works are for string orchestra and harp (Lyra Angelica), cor anglais (Autumn Legend) and viola (Pastoral Fantasia). If Alwyn has a soul-mate, it's probably his older (and just as cranky) contemporary Arnold Bax. This disc is an excellent introduction to Alwyn. --Paul Cook
Customer Reviews:
Wow!.......2005-02-23
I first became interested in Alwyn's music after watching Michelle Kwan skate to Lyra Angelica in 1998. The CD quickly became on of my all-time favorites! Alwyn's music is ethereally gorgeous yet at the same natural and refreshing. I am a violist and would love to learn the Pastoral Fantasia. Buy this CD. It will lift your spirits!
Majestic.......2003-10-10
I first heard this music on my clock radio. I had tuned in the local NPR station to help me fall asleep, but as soon as the "Pastoral Fantasia" played, I couldn't possibly sleep with such majestic and soulful music playing. I had never heard of Alwyn, and struggled to find the CD, but now I play it every day. I find the music penetrating my life in so many ways, and it resonates in my mind constantly. Putting this CD in my stereo in the morning is like heaven on earth. Even my friends who do not care for classical music find the Alwyn CD addictive!
Wonderful recording.......2003-06-22
This recording is truly beautiful. Buy it!
Wonderful!.......1999-05-07
I had never heard of William Alwyn until I happened to catch a recording of "Lyra Angelica." It had such an etherealness to it, such beauty and joy, reminding me of the sky and clouds, etc. It has so many subtle treasures hidden in it that it deserves repeated listening...the rest of the cd is wonderful, too, but I'd give all of the five stars for "Lyra Angelica" itself.
Fantastic journey into the composers mind........1999-03-12
William Alwyn has captured pure beauty in his music. The Pastoral Fantasia embodies much of what Debussy tried to capture in his music; sunsets, trees, waves, clouds, and all that represents beauty and majesty in the natural world. The quality of this CD is excellent, just make sure you play it loud and with maximum bass capability! It will touch your soul.

Album Description
A triple cd set featuring world renowned virtuosi performing W.A. Mozart's Complete Wind Concerti.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent and unique........2006-09-30
This is one of the best collections of Mozart's wind concerti played on original instruments. Thomas Crawford's Orchestra of the Old Fairfield Academy plays with beauty, gorgeous tone, transparency, grace, enthusiasm and apparent love of the music. The soloists are without exception excellent, and play either on original instruments or (more commonly) on instruments reconstructed from period models. Sandra Miller does a wonderful job on the flute concerti (playing with a sweetness and love unusual in performances of these pieces), as does Marc Schachman on the oboe concerti and Dennis Godburn on the bassoon.
But special mention has to go to the two unique concerti groups in this release: the clarinet concerto and the horn concerti. For the clarinet concerto, soloist Eric Hoeprich reconstructed Mozart's original performance version for the bassett clarinet, and went so far as to build his own bassett clarinet based on an engraving of the one played by the concerto's original soloist, Anton Stadler. Not only does Hoeprich's instrument sound gorgeous and mellow, it permits him to play several passages an octave lower than we are used to hearing. The result is not only one of the most beautiful performances of this gorgeous piece I've heard, it is also one which, after the initial shock of hearing something unfamiliar, just sounds completely "right." Listening to other performances based on Mozarts' revision of the piece for standard clarinet, I am now aware of how Mozart had to split octaves on certain phrases and how much better it sounds in the original, "un-split" version. For this reason alone one should buy this set.
The horn concerti were also gone over, revised based on Mozart's autograph versions where available, and in some cases reconstructed and rescored by Mozart specialist Robert Levin. Levin has played improvisations on Mozart's piano pieces and he seems to have absorbed the composer's musical language and spirit to an astonishing degree. The pieces sound new and fresh, in many cases more "Mozartian" than the versions we've come to know (several of which involved revisions by Mozart's pupil Sussmayer -- I've got to say Levin seems to know Mozart better than Sussmayer did!). The performances by RJ Kelly and the orchestra are all first-rate. In addition, the disc includes a separate performance of the Rondo-Allegro to the Concerto K412 which includes Mozart's written running commentary of insults to the original soloist Joseph Luetgeb -- fun to listen to once at least.
I'm sorry to see this set is not as easily available as it once was. It really should be at the top of your list for all of these concerti. Buy it if you can find it.

Better in the less-familiar works.......2007-04-22
Yan-Pascal Tortelier produces a surprisingly French timbre from the Ulster Orchestra (in contrast to the women's chorus in "Sirenes," which wafts to the ear as endearingly and beguilingly--if incongruously--Irish), and this conductor clearly knows his Debussy. Yet like another Frenchman who recorded a comprehensive survey of Debussy's orchestral music, Jean Martinon, Tortelier makes a stronger impression with the lesser-known works, many of them orchestrated by hands other than the composer's. As fluent as the music-making is, all too often there's something tossed-off and careless about it. This manifests in overly-smooth phrasing and inconsistent orchestral balances--sometimes tellingly transparent, sometimes skewed to over-emphasize a particular strand at the expense of coherence. For this reason, Tortelier's "La Mer" and "Nocturnes," unfortunately, cause me to think of other, more successful performances I'd rather be hearing, and likewise "Jeux," although "Images" is a winner. Throughout the cycle, I'm not too crazy about Chandos' very resonant and distant sound, which gives the music an opulence that is foreign to its character--and creates its own intereference with details registering properly. Moreover, "La Mer" has been recorded with an exaggeratedly wide dynamic range, so that the opening bars are nearly inaudible. Still, there isn't too much competition for Debussy sets that offer this much music at a bargain price.

The ballade was Frank Martin's specialty. The Swiss composer wrote six of them throughout his long career, each featuring a different solo instrument or group of solo instruments. They are all from about 10 to 15 minutes in length, and like Samuel Barber's Essays for Orchestra, they pack a great deal of concentrated, communicative music into a very small space. The work for viola, wind, harp, harpsichord and percussion is a particularly colorful and evocative work, but then all of them are marvelously written and all too rarely encountered in the concert hall for the simple reason that they're too short. These performances are terrific. --David Hurwitz

LITTLE MARTIN MIRACLES.......2003-06-06
Eclectic Swiss composer, Frank Martin [1890-1974], inhabits a sophisticated and moody sound world, and these six "Ballades," collectively unavailable until now, offer us the broadest view of his art and emotional predilections, with each work in fascinating contrast with the other. Thus, the lengthy Ballade for Piano and Orchestra (16:56), a composition that, not unlike Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2, abounds in tense, bare-boned lyricism steeped in sardonic humor, when juxtaposed with the following brief Ballade for Trombone and Piano (8:00), a dark, focused, jazzy, Stravinsky-like piece, and then the extended Cello Ballade (15:56), the most mysterious of Martin's utterances, akin to Bloch's ruminations in Schelomo, rivets the listener and demands that he attend each work in turn. The sheer aural diversity of these compositions is fabulous. The Saxophone Ballade (14:45) opens like some ethereal "haunting," as does the Viola Ballade (12:23), and both proceed to mutate and develop in titillating, unpredictable neo-classicist ways. The Flute Ballade, very much in the style of Martinu, and spiritedly neurotic, maximizes the instrument's enormous potential in effect and display, song and stringency. Matthias Bamert leads The London Philharmonic, and various brilliant soloists, with a firm grip on authenticity and balance. The sound is extraordinary.

An Excellent Collection of Beautiful Instrumental Works.......2000-06-10
"It is in the romantic sense of the term that I have taken this title 'Ballade' - in the spirit of the ballads of Ossian. There is in that the evocation of something epic: one is telling a story...." These works, ranging in length from 8 to over 15 minutes, contain some of Frank Martin's loveliest instrumental inspirations, & the 1-movement, multi-tempo form seems to suit his unique blend of Classical & Romantic temperaments beautifully.(The Ballades for flute, trombone & cello also exist in versions with piano accompaniment.) It's wonderful to have all 6 Ballades on a single disk, especially in these excellent performances - one of the best in Bamert's Martin series for Chandos. And this is the only currently available version of the Viola Ballade, one of the extraordinary works of Martin's last years.

Pastoral Concerto Offering.......2002-05-02
This composer is new to me, and glad that somehow I became aware and dared to purchase this CD.
Alwyn was himself a virtuoso flutist and composer, thus he very much can relate to the woodwinds. Hence, the great Oboe Concerto played masterfully by Nicholas Daniel. Learning that this was composed during WWII to reflect the British countryside for which Alwyn longed, one gleans the pastoral sounds that emanate from this peaceful, flowing work, gracefully played.
The three Concerto Grossos are fine, especially the third, with its full, rich complement of brass, winds and strings. This exhibits one of Alwyn's strengths, the blending of the various orchestral sections.
One of the most beautiful Oboe recordings ever made!.......2001-05-04
I was listening to a program on NPR from the University of Southern California called the "Record Shelf." At least, I think that was the name. In any event, on that particular day they were playing what they considered to be the very best recordings available featuring the oboe. This CD was on that list. After hearing it on the radio, I purchased it immediately. It is not my absolute favorite Oboe recording but it is my second favorite. This is the premier recording of this Oboe Concerto. The Chandos sound is marvelous. Nicholas Daniel on oboe and Richard Hickox as conductor of the London Sinfonia create a haunting fantasia of sound on the first track of this recording. This Oboe Concerto was initially performed at a Henry Wood Promenade Concert in 1949 by Evelyn Rothwell. It is one of the finest pieces of 20th century music. The remaining four tracks on this disc are equally beautiful but my favorite is the Oboe Concerto. If you want to get to know William Alwyn better, if you love the oboe or if you're just looking for beautiful and mysterious melodies then you'll enjoy this recording.
