Product Description
Long established as a cult classic and collector's grail, Mick Burgoyne and Leigh Dolphin's sole album is presented here with their full co-operation. Originally recorded in 1971 when they were just nineteen and fresh to the studio, Fresh Maggots is one of the best distillations of folk and psychedelia ever recorded. Varying in tone form heavy rock 'Frustration', to protest 'Everyone's Gone To War', social commentary 'Dole Song' and pastoral 'Rosemary Hill', it's a highly unusual and powerful record that enjoyed extravagant acclaim on release but sold poorly and has never been officially issued since. Comes complete with a fully annotated and illustrated 8 page booklet. Sunbeam Records. 2005.

Album Description

Despite selling poorly initially, it has gone on to acquire a major reputation amongst acid folk fans, who will be especially eager to hear the seven bonus tracks included here (including the duo's rare non-album single and a previously unheard live radio session from 1971). The package is rounded off with rare photographs and detailed sleevenotes, making this the most comprehensive collection of their music ever. Sunbeam. 1971.

3 out of 5 stars Bent folk.......2007-02-15

If you can get past the horrifying inanity of the lyrics, there's actually some cool music on here. The "fuzz guitar" is really the make or break ingredient; the songs which lack it (probably about a third of them) tend towards silly, boring, generic hippy acoustic drivel about love and . . . well, mostly just love. BUT (and this is a big ole' butt)there's really some great guitar work on here, particularily on the tracks which alternate between the blazing, ahead-of-it's time distortion and the tranquil, pastoral, one-with-nature finger picking. It's a great dichotomy, demonstrative of some real imagination and an appreciation of the fact that (in spite of their lyrics) all life is not just flowers, kisses and sunshine - and that there is beauty in ugliness as well, as reflected in the admittedly somewhat off-putting name of the group. It's challenging music, but if youre into seminal, esoteric, quasi-psychedelic classic rock stuff, it's worth the effort.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Melancholic yet uplifting.......2005-08-30

The genius of this albumn lies in its simple, rustic melodies. Each tune exists as a microcosm of all the songs which nest a detached melancholy, capable of creating subtle emotional responses in any listener and accessible to anyone. It would be a grave injustice to begin to describe the uplifting effect that "Rosemary Hill" can elicit or the innocent intent of the beautifully pastoral "And When She Laughs": prepare yourself for an intense journey into an ethereal realm commoditized only once...you'll find it here.
