Our Daily Bread: Hymns of Grace.......2006-03-15
I ususally never buy this genre of music. However, after receiving a similiar item of Our Daily Bread for a gift, I purchased two others of this series. Beautiful instrumentation, arrangements, and styling. Very relaxing and inspiring. I listen at home, at work, and at school.

Album Description
Corey Harris is a griot for modern times, a musical alchemist who has found a unique place on the world stage through constant touring in the U.S. and abroad. Following his starring role in Martin Scorsese's PBS series, 'The Blues,' in which he traveled to Mali to explore the links between African music and the blues, Corey began working on new material that reflected the full range of his experience. As he established himself early in his career as one of the pre-eminent young bluesmen, and as his recent work has embraced an ever-widening circle of black musical vibrations, he emerges on 'Daily Bread' with an accessible, song-oriented sound that simultaneously expresses his roots and his own voice.
Customer Reviews:
Daily Bread.......2005-09-15
Corey Harris' latest offering is solid throughout. Corey is able to blend a lot of different types of blues together with some other genres of music. There's some reggae touches on a few songs; some "world music" touches thrown in some others. This makes the disc nice and varied and not-repetitive.
The songs themselves are mostly very good and very catchy (but not catchy in a corny, lame sort of way). You may find yourself singing the chorus/humming the melody while you're sitting at your desk.
There's a couple songs I wasn't too crazy about - but they were just decent - nothing on here is bad.
So, overall, it's a very good cd. I found mine used and it was well worth that price. Daily Bread is a good cd in a time when music, in general, is lacking in talent. Keep up the good work, Corey!
Not your "traditional'' blues disc .........2005-07-20
Most blues fans know Coreys name by now , he is one of the more interesting roots musicians of the current crop , i.e Keb Mo' (Kevin Moore) Alvin Y Hart , etc . this effort is not styled on Charlie Patton or Robert Johnson or Big Joe Williams , but on Corey Harris . His musical journey has taken him to this recording . I love the variety , the reggae feel on some tracks; his treatment of O.V. Wrights soul classic Nickel And A Nail is cool . the nice thing is the inclusion of Olu Dara on a couple of cuts .. nice move! Great sounds/instrumentation .. nice to hear a Hammond Organ again ..a great listen .
ludicrous.......2005-07-16
corey harris is certainly one of those so-calld bluesmen of the XXIth century: overpretentious, without any knowledge of blues history and ungifted. In fact, he played anything but blues until he realized there was some bucks for him to grab posing as a true bluesman. This latest opus is the worst: no feeling, no passion, not the single authenticity. Shun this one and give a listen to the true bluesmen
Fantastic!.......2005-07-15
There is not a weak track on this delightful new recording, a combination of West African, Delta acoustic and Reggae roots music. They flow together in a soothing and uplifting way, a blend of playful songcraft and masterful instrumentation. Corey Harris, like fellow Coloradan Otis Taylor, is the real thing - making modern music firmly rooted in the African/Delta acoustic blues sound. This is the music to cure all your blues and make you whole.
From Mississippi To Mali Continued.......2005-07-03
Corey Harris has journeyed into the past and discovered the future. He has managed to find the roots of the music he loves so much and at the same time, give it a gentle nudge forward. This album of African folk blues and reggae is strong from start to finish. Corey's in this amazing, creative place that few artists ever reach. I look forward to each and every release of his. Along with fellow bluesman Otis Taylor, he's one of the most important musicians of our time. You shouldn't miss out.

Refreshing and Inspirational.......2006-06-17
Instrumental music for quiet times with God is an excellent idea which is masterfully accomplished in this collection of well-known hymns. With sixteen songs, this CD can be played repetitively with no concern about too much frequency. The choice of songs fits in perfectly with the theme of hope. It starts with "Be Thou My Vision," and ends with "Holy, Holy, Holy." Consequently, the hope is based on the Giver of Hope, Jesus.
The Scripture on the back cover, John 14:1-2 reminds listeners to trust in God and not let their hearts be troubled. Musically, another positive feature of this CD is that the volume and tempo of the songs are all similiar. There is no abrupt jarring from soft to heavy then back again, like is found in some collections. One can put this CD on, relax, prayer, meditate, and even drift into sleep undisturbed. This is an excellent work.

Customer Reviews:
... recalls the primordial sounds of Shrek.......2004-05-16
Scelsi Morning finds guitarist Marc Ribot exploring the possibilities of "classical" forms in adherence to the rhythms of modern dance. The tracks on this album are taken from scores Ribot wrote to accompany both Wim Vanderheybus dance piece Inasmuch as Life is Borrowed and Yoshiko Chuma's Reverse Psychology. Tribal percussion, brittle electric guitar, ominous pump organs and droning clarinets all combine to make a sound not unlike Marc's old band - Shrek.
In the mid-80's, Ribot found himself in demand as THE avant garde guitarist for personalities like Tom Waits, Elvis Costello and the Lounge Lizards. Currently, just about any John Zorn gig needing a guitar features Ribot. In between, Ribot founded Shrek, a powerful unit that transposed the energy of Albert Ayler's 1960's free-jazz maelstrom into a rock guitar context. After signing with Atlantic Records for a few albums to explore his more accessible Los Cubano's Postizos band, it seemed as though Ribot had abandoned Shrek's primal sound. Apparently not; if anything, this album is a throwback of sorts.
Opening with blistering guitar work and settling into a familiar tribal pattern of ritualistic percussion, Scelsi Morning takes the listener back to Ribot's Shrek days with a vengeance. Further tracks reveal a compositional maturity un-hinted at in those halcyon days. Clarinets play interweaving harmonies, organs bubble and drone while Ribot coaxes out ethereal as well as discordant shards from his guitar. Although having been conceived as music to accompany dance, these pieces more than stand on their own.
Brilliantly mixes Nu Jazz, Downtown, Noir, & White Noise.......2003-10-15
Most definitely not for everyone, Scelsi Morning presents some of the most interesting and challenging music being performed and recorded today.
Originally composed for two different dance pieces, the music resonates with other performance-oriented music, such as soundtrack recordings, having suite-like sensibilities and a vingnette-like feel. Dedicated to Giancento Scelsi, a modern Italian composer, who also creates uniquely atmospheric soundscapes, this discs stands out by virtue of its drama, menace, and beauty.
What I especially like about Scelsi Morning is its gloriously varied and unusual sound palette. Ribot not only employs a wide variety of instruments, he places them in unique settings. Thus you get Ned Rothenberg making his bass clarinet sound like a didjeridu and honking goose on "Geese," backed by intriguing string and pump organ voicings interspersed with mesmerizing fugue-like passages. Much of it is very atmospheric, like a soundtrack to a noirish sci-fi movie (check out esp. "Our Daily Bread," with its blasts of fuzz guitar, Chinese-water-torture percussion, and very in-your-face violin playing). I especially like the faux-anthemic, Chinese-tinged "The Youth Brigade Triumphs Again (and Again)." All in all, garage-soundtrack-Nu Jazz might best describe what's going on here.
As I say, not for everyone, but highly recommended for those with big ears and not afraid to encounter a truly different music experience.
buy it now.......2003-10-14
i must say that this album is one of my favorite ribot works...his guitar playing is top notch and the compositions display yet another side of the musical chameleon that he is...no more words, buy the record.
Poor effort - Not my cup of tea..........2003-08-28
I've been a big fan of Ribot's (even met him once) especially in the Zorn realm. Filmworks 8, his Cubanos project - both ablums are very good, even some of his other Tzadik releases are intersting but this album just seems to fail on many levels. I don't understand this type of stuff. First of all, it's been done already and secondly, here it's not done all that well.
For a real Ribot album try Filmworks 8 or Circle Maker by John Zorn. Ribot tears up the fret board on those - or look for Los Cubanos projects he did for Atlantic. All are great. He even did some great things with James Carter on "Layin' in the cut" - and his "Saints" album isn't bad either... Pass this one up though. It's not likely I will listen to this album again in the near future. I couldn't even get all the way thru it the first time...
