Some inspired music has arrived in the wake of Hurricane Katrina (mainly on New Orleans-themed benefit albums), but nothing as audaciously ambitious as this cross-generational collaboration between Crescent City mainstay Allen Toussaint and former British upstart turned adventurously eclectic veteran Elvis Costello. As a songwriter, producer, and arranger, Toussaint has been responsible for hits from artists ranging from Irma Thomas, Ernie K-Doe, and Lee Dorsey to the Pointer Sisters and Labelle. Costello, long a huge fan of Toussaint's music, sings relatively familiar fare such as "On Your Way Down" and "Freedom for the Stallion" from Toussaint's extensive songbook along with obscurities mainly recorded by Dorsey. Toussaint supplies his distinctive piano and horn arrangements--as well as lead vocals on "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further?"--with Costello's Imposters serving as the rhythm section. Yet the real revelation comes from the new material, including the title track (a searing Costello composition in the Toussaint soul-spiritual mode) and five new Costello/Toussaint compositions that spotlight Toussaint's signature sound without diminishing Costello's creative contributions. What could have been a curiosity is instead a hallmark in the catalog of each artist. --Don McLeese

Album Description

The River in Reverse is Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint's spirited and deeply soulful new album, including seven songs from Toussaint's remarkable catalog; five newly written by the two; and one new song, the title track, written by Costello. Sessions for the album took place over a whirlwind two weeks late last year in Hollywood, CA and at Piety Street Studios in Toussaint's hometown of New Orleans. Produced by Joe Henry, the album masterfully combines Costello's band the Imposters with Toussaint's horn section (Amadee Castenell, Joe Smith, Sam Williams, and Brian Cayolle) and guitarist (Anthony Brown).

Toussaint led the ensemble from the piano, with Imposters keyboard player Steve Nieve switching to Hammond B3. The majority of the tracks were cut with the entire group in the room and Costello singing live, occasionally adding his guitar to the mix. Costello selected songs from deep within the Toussaint catalogue such as "Nearer To You," "Freedom for the Stallion," and "Tears, Tears and More Tears." Toussaint kicks off the lead vocal on his composition, "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further?" and trades vocal lines with Costello and bassist Davey Faragher on several other tracks.

All of the horn arrangements are marked with Toussaint's distinctive style and, commented Costello, "add a second voice" to the title track, the one song that Costello wrote alone. Just before the recording began, the duo holed up in New York to write together throughout October, a quick-moving process that resulted in four songs on the album of various combinations of words and music.

The songwriting collaboration began with Costello writing lyrics for Toussaint's beautiful minor key variation of Professor Longhair's "Tipitina." The resulting piece is now entitled "Ascension Day." Other new titles include "The Sharpest Thorn," "Broken Promise Land," and "International Echo."

Toussaint previously produced a 1983 Costello cover of Yoko Ono's "Walking on Thin Ice" with the Attractions and the T.K.O. Horns, and also contributed piano to the New Orleans-recorded "Deep Dark Truthful Mirror" from Costello's 1989 album Spike.

Immediately following Hurricane Katrina, Toussaint relocated to New York City, where the two renewed their musical friendship at several benefit concerts and club gigs during a seven-day period from the 17th of September, leading to discussions of this new album. The powerful song "The River in Reverse" was written by Costello on September 24th, 2005, and performed by him for the first time at that night's "Parting the Waters" benefit event organized by the The New Yorker magazine.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Overlook The CD/DVD Combo.......2007-05-05

Yes indeed! So you're thinking about getting this great collaboration that came out in 2006 on CD, which is a wonderful thing to be thinking about, as most of the other reviewers here will attest to. But hey, please don't forget to look in the next bin at THE EXACT SAME TITLE IN THE CD/DVD COMBO PACKAGE (ASIN: B000FBH476) AND IT'S FOR THE *EXACT SAME PRICE*!! What was that? Well SOMEBODY you know must have a DVD player, and they can invite you over for dinner! It's worth it on so many levels, just to see them starting the project in LA, see them at Sunset Sound breaking out the ever-so-soulful song "What Do You Want The Girl To Do" (not on the CD), see them talking about actually going to The Big Easy soon after Katrina and debating whether it's a good idea or not since it could be seriously discouraged by the authorities, not to mention real upsetting for Allen Toussaint (having just lost his house and possessions there), see them flying coach from LA to NO, and then see them pick up the sessions again at a studio right there in the Crescent City! The material from the CD comes to life ten-fold, and the city by (and still in) the river welcomes them with open arms! As Toussaint says at one point "There will always be a New Orleans, and now.. there will be a Very New Orleans!" It's a joy to watch.

So to re-cap: the CD's great, 4 stars. But don't forget to look one shelf over at the CD/DVD combo, an easy 5 star package. And at zero extra dollars, it's a no-brainer!

5 out of 5 stars More than easy listening from the Big Easy!.......2007-03-15

Elvis Costello teams up with legendary New Orleans jazz pianist Alain Toussant for a collection of beautiful songs with a quiet dignity beneath the riffs. A portion of the profits go to help New Orleans musicians who were Hurricane Katrina victims. But I never knew Big Easy jass could be so thoughtful and sophisticated.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars. .......2007-03-13

my, mr costello is certainly prolific in the recording studio. yet another album. and hooray, i say. the man rarely, rarely lets one down. this time out he is paired with new orleans great allen toussaint. together they have crafted an extremely fun recording. rock, blues, and funky soul ring out here. mr toussaint's piano playing is filled with infectious enthusiasm and mr costello's vocals are filled with emotion. that costello voice, to me, is stunning. it's ablility to express different moods and a variety of emotions can hardly be bettered in rock music. his songwriting has always gotten attention, but i feel his singing has not recieved the full appreciation from critics that it deserves. anyway, this is a fantastic piece of work. selected by "no depression" magazine as the 4th best album of 2006, don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars real music...real songs.......2007-01-11

very refreshing. Real songs and real musicians. Great live feeling. Great horns, keys, drums arrangement.

Thank god Costello is around to keep it high and real!

5 out of 5 stars Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint...it doesn't get much better than this...........2007-01-06

This collaboration is totally AMAZING.....soulful...meaningful- probably on a personal as well as on a more alturistic/socially relevant level..and finally, very sexy. I've been a fan of Elvis since the late 70's...GOD am I that old?? He has always inspired and made me think beyond the borders. Now I am a fan of Mr. Toussaint's as well. The CD starts off wonderful and keep giving more and more. Even when you think you have already heard the best it can possibly offer, it then crescendos and ROCKS you with SIX FINGERED MAN..! It's really hard to pick a favorite on this one. FREEDOM FOR THE STALLION will make you stop in your tracks and THINK. It's is one of those basic...true...important pieces that make you take notice. THE SHARPEST THORN is extremely melancholy, and personal. BROKEN PROMISE LAND, THE RIVER IN REVERSE, ASCENSION DAY, and INTERNATIONAL ECHO (Love that one!!) have Elvis' print all over it...and can ONLY be made even better and just absolutely perfect with Mr. Toussaint's contribution. Mr. Toussaint's ALL THESE THINGS is totally amazing!!! Very true and just damn sexy. WONDER WOMAN will make you smile and just want to get up and dance. Just give yourself a gift this new year....and treat yourself to this CD. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful surprise.......2007-08-01

We nearly always avoid non-operatic material being performed by opera singers because they seldom keep their "instruments" from dominating the material. I beg Placido's forgiveness for avoiding him for so long. His absolutely marvelous, musical performances here found me weeping from the sheer beauty of his voice and his understanding of the beautiful songs chosen for this album.

5 out of 5 stars love songs easy to listen too.......2007-05-07

I love a classical voice singing this type of mustic, or sacred (from the operas (in English), or, out of print sacred. Wish I could find a source for some of my old tapes (some recorded from 78s) of artists like Jerome Hines (Holy City, 1962-3, 78 record I transferred to tape), Russel Davis (1970 or early 8os record I coped, of tape my Dad had copied), William Harness, Kathleen Battle, etc. etc. I enjoy a wide range of music, but had operatic training, so understand the requirements for superior vocal skill. John Denver had much of the quality. Music for me is part of the fabric of life.

4 out of 5 stars This is an oldie but a goodie!.......2006-11-09

One of his first albums of "popular" songs and one of the best of the songs we have loved for years with a fresh, new Domingo treatment. Just as his album with John Denver was a something new for him, these songs are out of the opera world. You'll never hear any of them performed by anyone up to the "gold standard" of Domingo. That being said, I love this album, but - the accent gets in the way on the English songs. You have to be able to accept the accented English and just listen to the gorgeous voice singing some very romantic songs. I highly recommend!

2 out of 5 stars Great for boring candlelight dinner or quick ride in an elevator........2006-10-31

As much as I enjoy listening to Placido Domingo's popular recordings this is not one of his best performances. Missing the full-blooded belting that can be heard on his other albums ("Be My Love" for example). The orchestration is very mediocre and uninspired.
For a romantic mood, "Perhaps Love" (simply fabulous) is much better choice.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2006-02-23

I have been looking for this title for a long time...in all the wrong places.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of Gilbert And Sullivan.......2004-03-15

At the end of the 19th century (1870's, 80's and 90's) the compatible duo of librettist and composer Gilbert and Sullivan popularized the pre-Broadway entertainment of Savoy opera. These were light operas or operettas whose content was satire and comedy, full of bouncy melodies and beautiful singing, highly entertaining theatrical works staged at London's Savoy theatre. Gilbert and Sullivan did not always get along and in fact there was a time when they ended their professional relationship because personal conflicts surfaced. But they managed to create the world's most beloved light operas, over 40 of them. Their most famous are what I call the Big Three- The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance and The Mikado. Other works include their first hit Trial By Jury, The Yeomen Of The Guard, Princess Ida, The Gondoliers, Patience and several others. A standard signature of Gilbert and Sullivan was in the colorful cast- a comic actor with a special kind of baritone voice, a canary-like and sweet-voiced coloratura or lyric diva, a mezzo soprano with strong chest register and a lyric tenor as the romantic hero. On this album, English conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, a popular figure in the classical music scene and opera, guides the Chorus and Orchestra Of the Welsh National Opera in generally well-delivered performances of excerpts from the operas The Mikado, The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance, Yeomen Of The Guard and Trial By Jury. Although I feel that the recordings made by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, with Isodore Godfrey conducting and starring the best cast of the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire- the singers of the 60's and 70's- tenor Phillip Potter, soprano Valerie Masterson, baritone John Reed, Donald Adams and mezzo soprano Christine Palmer. Their version of the Pirates Of Penzance and the Mikado far outshine the Welsh National Opera in technical mastery and vibrant tone color.

But these are fine excerpts. Especially appealing is the famous and cheerful "Three Little Maids From School Are We", a trio that imitates Japanese style melody. Most of the Mikado does this, for it was inspired by Japanisme or the new fashion in Victorian England- everything Japanese, from prints to paintings to poetry. Gilbert and Sullivan simply "Japanized" their English operettas. The Finale "For He's Gone To Marry Yum Yum" is an ebullient and pleasant finale. Not featured here is the domineering and powerful Katisha, a figure who stands out in the Mikado.

The H.M.S. Pinafore is Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular work. The sea chanty "We Sail The Ocean Blue" opens the opera with appropriate atmosphere and it seems to fit perfectly with the other scene in which the Captain greets his crew and they sing his praises "My Gallant Crew..I am the Captain Of The Pinafore". A beautiful melody that seems to come out of a romantic Offenbach tune is "I"m Called Little Buttercup". The finale, not featured here, is also very engaging "For He Is An Englishman" which can almost resemble a British national anthem. The Yeomen Of The Guard was Gilbert and Sullivan's "serious opera" eventhough it remains very Savoyard. The plot deals with Tudor England and takes place at the London Tower. "I have a song to sing" makes use of what can be taken for an English ballad of the Renaissance. Trial By Jury, about the eccentric and hilarious activity of a court trial, has a sextet that although different in composition, has the sextet "Che Mi Frena" from Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor in mind. All in all, an excellent recording sure to delight young and old.

5 out of 5 stars Pure delight.......2003-08-02

--Gilbert & Sullivan--
William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were a match made in heaven, yet on earth their pairing seems even with hindsight a most unlikely coupling. Both were destined for other things, Gilbert in fact for decidedly non-musical careers. Introduced by a mutual friend, Fred Clay, the fledgling lyricist Gilbert met the military-band-leader's son Sullivan and together continued to conspire to inspire the delights of audiences from high Victorian times down to the present, as their work in musical theatre comedy continues to provide merriment throughout the English-speaking world and beyond.

--The Music--
This collection includes highlights from five of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Yeoman of the Guard, and Trial by Jury. The arrangements and orchestrations are delightfully energetic and clear; the characterisation and vocal qualities of the leads are perfect for their roles. The haughty if misplaced Lord of the Admiralty has the perfect combination of insecurity and pompous officiousness. The Plaintiff and the Defendant in the Trial are perfectly cast. This is a collection of highlights - at least three but no more than seven songs each, but this gives a good flavour of the music. The recordings on this collection come from complete performances by Mackerras and the WNO.

--Sir Charles Mackerras--
Mackerras is one of the geniuses of the twentieth century musical scene. Having a conducting career that includes the Hamburg Opera, the English National Opera (formerly Sadlers Wells Opera), and the Welsh National Opera (the performers for this piece), he has also conducted major orchestras on the continent of Europe and in the United States. The holder of many major awards and honourary doctorates, he has devoted much time and energy to the preservation and performance of eighteenth and nineteenth century music, as well the restoration of historical musical venues, such as the Estates Theatre in Prague, scene of the original production of Don Giovanni (Mackerras conducted the opera there to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Mozart).

--Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Chorus--
The seeds of the WNO were planted in Cardiff during World War II by music lovers; the first performances occurred a year after the war's end, with Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci on the bill, with Faust the next night. Popular appeal was so great that the WNO was established, later adding choruses in both Cardiff and Swansea. The professional chorus was established in 1973, with a strength that matches the orchestra. They continue an ambitious performance schedule for recording and live events; Mackerras remains the Conductor Emeritus, as the WNO continues under the direction of Carlo Rizzi. The list of awards the WNO has won over the years is staggering - they are a world class institution by any measure.

--Other performers--
Notable singers such as Richard Stuart, Rebecca Evans, Felicity Palmer, John Mark Ainsley and Anne Howells lead the chorus with stunning vocals and clever characterisations of the parts they play. Many (such as Stuart and Evans) play the leading roles across several of the pieces of the disc.

--Liner Notes--
The liner notes give a good introduction and biographical information about Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as synopses of the five pieces presented here. It does not, unfortunately, include any information about Mackerras, the WNO Orchestra and Chorus, or the other special performers. It also does not include the lyrics to the songs. Were the quality of the CD not so great, this might cost it a star in rating.

--Overall Impressions--
I play this CD in my car, in my home and in my office frequently. It is a great sing-along work and a great comedic relief from the stresses of the day. The music is bubbly and clear; the recording quality is excellent and crisp. I recommend this to any Gilbert & Sullivan lover, any fan of musical comedy, opera and operettas, and anyone who delights in good music.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious G&S samplings abound here........2003-05-06

The first thing I should be saying is "What an infectuous G&S CD." Indeed this is, with this fine sampling of the peppy and bright Mackerras series. I know I have praised its "Mercedes-Benz quality" elsewhere on these pages, but that doesn't stop me from saying that everyone is in fine voice. This generously filled CD may only focus on five operas, but at least you can savour a reasonable choice sampling of delights from each one. Of particular interest is Richard Suart's patter-baritone parts and the soaring lyric soprano of Rebecca Evans. The selection on this disc is filled with a mixture of familiar favourites and lesser-known gems such as the female choruses in Mikado and Pirates. Mackerras is a true G&S conductor, but one who always springs rhythms crisply, and adopts peppy tempo for the fast bits. The one drawback is that this selection is far too infectuous that you'll want to shell out money to buy the full 5-CD Mackerras cycle - an incredible bargain with most of the operas fitted onto one disc each. But still, this is at least a decent G&S sampling for beginners, capped with Steven Ledbetter's copious liner notes. It will leave you wanting to say "dammit I'm going to play it again."

5 out of 5 stars Fine Intro to G&S.......2000-12-30

This is the perfect CD for those who may not be familiar with G&S, or for the initiated who want a smattering but don't have the mother of all CD changers. The difficulty with any G&S Greatest Hits CD is determining which pieces to leave off; while one could easily point to any number equally good bits, it would be difficult to argue about the quality of the choices included. The only problem, such as it is, is that after listening to it I am usually induced to go back and listen to the whole opera anyway. The Mackerras recordings are uniformly excellent. I have read elsewhere the criticism that they are too 'operatic' for light opera. If by this it is meant that the singers are too good, then I leave it to the discretion of the listener when the singing becomes too good to be enjoyable.

Under Cold Blue Stars, the third album from native Nebraskan Josh Rouse, is full of elegant, melodic pop songs that are deftly understated but carry hooks as catchy as Coldplay's (whose music the opening song, "Twilight," uncannily evokes). This is music for folk in love with Americana and timeless pop; it's a gentle hinterland of melancholy and hope. The loose concept behind Under Cold Blue Stars is that of a fractious couple in the late 1950s, trying to come to terms with their lives and relationship. "Christmas with Jesus" is an unashamedly beautiful realization of their struggles, as is the upbeat title track, which touches on sources as diverse as Nils Lofgren, the Cure, and even Bruce Springsteen (albeit, a Springsteen shorn of all pride and aggrandizement). All this adds up to make Under Cold Blue Stars rather special. --Everett True

5 out of 5 stars Seek no more... Josh Rouse is it.......2005-09-13

If you feel that America has lacked a good singer-songwriter to fill in the shoes of the Bob Dylans and the Cat Stevens of the past, seek no more. With thought-out lyrics and a blend of alternative with bits of folk, pop and a country feel, Josh Rouse leaves an indelible mark in all his albums I have had the luck to listen to. But having also heard his productions "Nashville", "Home" and a good part of "1972", I feel confident when I say that "Under Cold Blue Stars" (2002) is perhaps his most solid production to date.

Some claim Rouse has a sound that reminds of Coldplay. I think this is a very shortsighted description of his music. His poetic and musical palette flirt with your imagination transporting you to the places that his songs visit, whether they are a dark country road late at night "under cold blue stars" or a bright and upbeat evening under the lights of a downtown. If you are seriously searching for a blend of folk and country with a pop touch, stay away from Jack Johnson. Rouse's unique art is what you are looking for. If you want to listen to more music like his, try Joseph Arthur and Paul Brill.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Album by an amazing performer..........2004-07-13

This is one of the most hypnotic alternative albums of the decade! I love this cd. There really are no words to describe how great the music is. The songs are all beautifully performed and the melodies are all intoxicating and catchy. I'm not usually a fan of male vocals but I love this album. Definetly one of the best cds I have ever owned.

5 out of 5 stars No question, one of the best.......2004-06-22

If you like heartfelt acoustic rock, this is the album for you. Josh's laid back, matter of fact voice blends perfectly with the funk rhythm on Under the Cold Blue Stars (think almost Remy Shand) and the moving Nothing Gives Me Pleasure. I can shut my eyes and imagine myself walking through Manhattan late in a January evening with the wind nipping at my face. Despite that, no matter what my mood is, there is something on this album that speaks to me each time I play it and the complex layers always keep me coming back to this album, time and again. You won't go wrong with this album, there's not a weak song on it.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2003-10-22

I first heard Josh Rousse on a Various Artists album, and this was the first Josh Rousse album I've purchased. I was dissipointed to find out that it wasn't much like the song of his that I heard (Laughter). The album itself is not bad, it has a easy-going, laid back feel, similar artists would be Jack Johnson and Duncan Sheik. The tracks mold together, giving it a somwhat bland feel to it, but overall worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Listening.......2003-06-17

Under Cold Blue Stars is one of my favorites. Josh Rouse has a talent for writing wonderful songs and he shines on this disc.
Every tune is a keeper...The highlights are:

2. Nothing Ever Gives Me Pleasure
3. Miracle
4. Christmas With Jesus
5. Under Cold Blue Stars
6. Ugly Stories
8. Ears To The Ground
10. Women And Men

7 Excellent songs out of 11 great songs. Not Bad.

5 out of 5 stars A Joyful Rage.......2007-06-23

This tribute to New Orleans and the work of Allen Toussaint in the aftermath of Katrina is powerful and uplifting. A great collaboration - Elvis' agnger informed by Toussaint's humanity
The DVD is excellent as well. Typically, these are just a few videos and some scenes in the studio. The footage here of Toussaint returning to his hometown, as well as some hot live performances, could easily have made a compelling feature documentary. (And have we ever seen footage of Elvis recording an album?)

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-05

This is an excellent arrangement of talent. The songs are great and the DVD provides enriching context. For those of us living along the mighty Mississippi, the music strikes deep. Allen is a terrific pianist and these guys sound very good together. Best song on the whole thing is "All These Things", with River in Reverse running a close second.

2 out of 5 stars Such a waste..........2006-10-06

If you could find a way to remove Elvis Costello's voice track from the recording, this would be a very good disc. If you could replace him with a competent R&B or soul singer, it would be a fantastic one (especially if he slurred the lyrics). As it is, it's just unlistenable. EC never was much of a singer, but here he's way out of his depth -- off-key whitebread bombast is not what this kind of music calls for. His voice is fingernails on the blackboard bad, and it's relentless... there's not even a single instrumental track to relieve the pain. It kills me to toss any disc with Allen Toussaint on it, but this one's got to go.

5 out of 5 stars Another Sharp Collaboration for Costello Who Gains Gravitas With the Soulfully Erudite Toussaint.......2006-08-24

Renaissance musician/troubadour Elvis Costello partners this time with legendary New Orleans R&B musician Allen Toussaint, and the results on this disc are quite fulfilling, often languorous and melancholy, all the more fitting given its context after the devastation of Katrina. Even without the relief aspect, the timing of this collaboration somehow feels right perhaps because Costello at this juncture of his career seems to be gaining more gravitas as a musical presence. Produced live and without overdubs by Joe Henry, the crisp-sounding recording effectively combines Costello's band, The Impostors, with Toussaint's guitarist Anthony "AB" Brown and the Crescent City Horns to produce frequently transcendent moments. Costello wrote the searing title tune, a biting sideswipe against the Bush administration's slow response in hurricane relief, and he performs it with his familiar angry-man vigor.

Together, Costello and Toussaint wrote five tracks, the best of which are the swinging, sardonic "Broken Promise Land" and the jaunty, inexplicably titled "International Echo". However, the best cuts are definitely the Toussaint compositions beginning with the opening song, the mournful "On Your Way Down". Several, well-turned love songs add to the texture of the blend, such as "Nearer to You" and "All These Things". It's not all dark moods as the driving "Tears, Tears and More Tears" makes a nice contrast, and Toussaint effortlessly takes the lead vocal on the soulful "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further". There is an invaluable DVD included, the half-hour documentary, "Putting the River in Reverse", which chronicles the recording sessions, one of which took place in New Orleans, the first major session after Katrina. Visually as well as aurally, an erudite, impeccably dressed Toussaint makes a striking contrast to the still-grungy Costello. Just as he proved with his wonderful Burt Bacharach collaboration and his orchestral work, Costello can complement his eclectic style in the most unusual of settings.

5 out of 5 stars Soulful masterpiece.......2006-07-14

This is damn good stuff. It's the kind of album that you listen to while sitting on the edge of your bed, smoking one cigarette too many or maybe staring out your window while the sun sets. After all these years, Elvis Costello is still knocking them out of the park and with Allen Toussaint as a partner in crime on this recording, the result is an album that's so good that it almost hurts. The piano work is exquisite on this album as is Costello's singing.

"Nearer to You" is a great track, as well as "Tears, Tears and More Tears", which somehow reminds me of old Motown without trying too hard. "The River in Reverse" is probably the best song in the album but then again, all the songs are really good anyway so it's almost like saying that a beautiful woman in a room full of them is the prettiest.

This is a strongly recommended purchase, not to mention that there is a nice behind the scenes dvd that comes with select pressings of this album.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

2 out of 5 stars Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

Originally recorded in 1971 and composed during a time of intense creativity, anguish, and physical and mental exhaustion, Eric Andersen's ode to despair and cry for renewal is widely acknowledged to be his masterpiece. Along with Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks and Joni Mitchell's Blue, it is a defining moment for the singer/songwriter genre. Andersen delivers these nine country- and gospel-flavored songs as if in a trance; a fragile and flowing analog warmth threads them together. All the airy, spacious lyricism of Norbert Putnam's delicate production is now before the listener, and the musical experience, even for those who know the album well, will be a revelation. The smallest details--Grady Martin's gut-string guitar on "Faithful," Weldon Myrick's steel guitar and Joni Mitchell's intricately phrased harmony on "Blue River," and Farell Morris's barely audible but finely textured vibes on "Florentine"--arise as if for the first time. Columbia has also unearthed two unreleased tracks--a soulful reinterpretation of the early ballad "Come to My Bedside" and a Cajun vamp-up of Hank Williams's "Why Don't You Love Me Like You Used to Do?" If it's a crime that an album this moving ever went out of print, it's also a triumph that it has returned meticulously remastered and elegantly annotated and presented. --Roy Kasten

3 out of 5 stars Growing Artist.......2007-05-07

I discovered Eric Andersen music recently.
This is a good album. In any case I would prefer the more mature sound of recent records like 'Blue Rain' with reinterpretations of old pieces from Blue River.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Album.......2007-04-05

One of the rare albums that achieves perfection right down to each note, a quiet, peaceful album that carries you gently like floating down a river under starlight. I saw Eric Andersen in concert one night in 1974 in a small theater, maybe 400 in the audience, at Michigan State U where I was a freshman. His performance was as quiet and simple as his albums. I remember particularly the song "Liza Light The Candle" (from a later album), where he enjoined the audience to sing along with the chorus. The song enveloped the audience and carried us away in the darkness, and when it quietly concluded no one made a sound; no clapping or applause, no one wanted to disturb the silence. You could have heard a pin drop. Eric eventually said something like "well...", and only then did everyone finally start applauding. I've never seen an artist hold his audience like that. That was 35 years ago and I still remember it as one of the most amazing concert experiences of my life.

4 out of 5 stars Better Late Than Never.......2007-04-04

The only shred I can remember from this album's original release is the chorus from the title track. But it stayed with me for over 30 years.

So I saw the CD in a store about a year ago or less or more, and bought it. The title song is as great as the chorus that kept cropping up in my brain lining over three decades told me it would be. Everything else seems so slight and unmemorable...but you play it again and again, and you pull back a new layer every time. It doesn't tell you it's deep. You have to find that out.

And now I see this guy's been, well, busy. I have some more Eric Andersen to buy. My ear knew I made a mistake not picking up on him back in '72. I'm glad it kept reminding me 'til I finally fixed that.

5 out of 5 stars The Romantic Troubador.......2007-03-11

Eric Andersen emerged from the same folk scene as Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs, but was much more of a romantic troubador than his contemporaries and seemed like an innocent in a cynical world.
"Blue River" is probably his best album and it should have brought him the recognition he always deserved. He had been recording for years when this album came out and the depth and maturity of the songs showcase an artist at the top of his game. While James Taylor and Cat Stevens were getting worldwide acclaim Andersen released his masterpiece, and though it recieved some critical laudits it barely registered with the public.
Andersen is mainly remembered today for some of his early songs like "Close the Door Lightly" and "Thirsty Boots", but he is best represented by albums like this or his later "Ghosts Upon the Road" and his most recent C.D.s. where his world weariness tempers his romanticism and paints a more realistic picture of our modern world.

5 out of 5 stars It took a while...........2003-03-05

I bought "Blue River" on vinyl in my early 20s, and I have to confess, I didn't care for it much back then. I knew that something important--maybe even vital--was going on in those grooves, but I just didn't "get it." A couple of decades later, I went back to that old vinyl and listened again with different ears and 20 more years in the rear-view mirror. It blew me away; I was moved to tears by the joy I felt on finally "getting it" as well as the sadness I felt for the years I had lost without this music in my life.
Folks...uh, folkies...learn from my mistake! Don't waste another day without this music. It will change the way you look at your world.

3 out of 5 stars not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

5 out of 5 stars And God bless Ferrante and Teicher.......2002-03-19

As some of you know, I am a Ferrante and Teicher fan from way back. When I read their dedication on this disc, I was really impressed. I dont know which one is officially retired, but the fact that he came out of retirement to help put this disc together was great... and the disc is A-1! During the Bicentennial year(1976) I had a vinyl disc, Spirit of 176, which
much of the music from this disc is from. Some of the musical effects are quite interesting, and my mother really loves the disc. I am so pleased that they released it. A real keeper!
