MAX ZBIRAL-TELLER TOO HEAVY TO CARRY (S-SSD 0083)

"the Jimmy Hendrix of the Hammered Dulcimer..." ...neighborhood friends of Max Southport Records is proud to welcome Max Zbiral-Teller to its roster of new music artists from Chicago. Max plays the Hammered Dulcimer, and as a Junior in High School became the youngest member of the Southport family at age 16! Max has embraced Celtic music, the traditional music from Ireland. After seeing a performance of the Dulcimer at a folk festival at age 6, Max convinced his parents, Jerri Zbiral and Alan Teller to purchase the instrument, and at the age of 8 his musical journey began. A student of Kat Eggleston (of Waterbug Records), Max has performed for nearly half his life! "Too Heavy To Carry" traces the foundation of Celtic music, blending the traditional music of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and Breton along with the maritime provinces of Canada and Galicia forms from Spain. The essence of "folk" music is to extend traditions that span centuries, creating new forms. The intense, yet beautiful wall of sound created by the percussive Hammered Dulcimer becomes a symphony of melody and new tradition with the youthful dexterity and vision of Max Zbiral-Teller. Joining Max on this CD is Kat Eggleston on Acoustic Guitar and his childhood friend Isaac Alderson on Uilleann Pipes and the traditional Irish Flute. The project was recorded at Sparrow Sound Design by engineer/producer Hillary Bryan, her first recording at age 21!

Max is my homeslice. He goes to my school and he is a talented musician and mean Ultimate frisbee player. From having seen Max play at numerous events, I'm gonna say he is one of the best Hammer-dulcimer players you could imagine. Buy his album.
He did a soundtrack for a sketch that my group produced. See it here:

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2001-04-30

This album demonstrates the entire essence of folk music. A young child, age 16!, playing an old instrument and obviously having a lot of fun. When listening to the CD, I can easily hear that Max, along with his fellow musicians, are having a great time. For anyone out there wanting to have a good time listening to some fine music, buy this album! Five Stars!

Amazing! Max is one of the finest hammer dulcimer artists I have heard. His CD demonstrates depth in musicality and technical sophistication. As a student of the hammer dulcimer, I am in awe of his talent. If you like this type of music - buy this CD now.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2001-01-03

As someone who spends part of her everyday time at school with Max, I find it amazing that someone his age could have a C.D. out. Max is a fun person who enjoys making his music and takes great pride in it, for it is a creation of a genius.
