Dave Carter
"Andrew Calhoun tells the truth. To my knowledge, there is no better songwriter alive."

Product Description
"Tiger Tattoo" marks a new direction in Andrew Calhoun's songwriting journey, with an emphasis on storytelling. The title track concerns a woman he met on a temp job in Portland, Oregon in October, 2000. Tracks 2-5 comprise an autobiography; "Miss Hill" recalls a mob scene presided over by an unstable 5th grade teacher; "Goin' Down to See John Prine" recounts family trips into Chicago in 1969-70 to "hear a mailman sing". "When I Have Arms Again" views the riddle of mental illness though the myth of the flight of Icarus. Dave Carter did the vocal arrangement for "Joy" and sings on the chorus, along with Tracy Grammer and Claire Bard. The final two tracks, "I Shall Not Look Away" and a setting of Seigfried Sassoon's "Everyone Sang" are tributes to Dave Carter, created shortly after his death in July, 2002.

"Tiger Tattoo" rose to #8 on Folk-DJ in November, 2002, and was on the 2003 top ten folk recordings list for WFMT and WDET.

5 out of 5 stars Contemporary Stories Presented With Humanistic Qualities.......2007-04-16

Andrew Calhoun presents real life experience gift wrapped in traditional folk music virtues. He molds these contemporary tales into our foreseeable future folklore. Calhoun's vocals provide idiosyncratic qualities that give his songs an infinite longevity. The title song "Tiger Tattoo" is a grand example of his extraordinary story-telling abilities.

1 out of 5 stars attack of the 5 star reviews.......2007-03-20

mr. calhoun is the stuff of house concerts, worth going to only if there's free refreshments like lox or marble pound cake. indistinguishable melodies, one after another. stabs at lyrical profundity sung in a monotonous bartione. new england folk at its most pedestrian, though he's from the midwest. try john gorka instead.

5 out of 5 stars The story goes on.......2004-08-01

I see Calhoun as a story teller, traveling around, collecting small pieces of life and giving it back as music. The man has a gift for turning the smallest moments into songs that stick with you. You should own this CD.
