"Bruce inhabits that folky sphere of Shawn Colvin and Suzanne Vega... Soul On Fire is an excellent album..."
Product Description
Pop-folk music with a lot of soul. An artfully produced, intelligent record "full of pathos and gentle ironies." Music that soothes the heart and stirs the soul. Jenny Bruce is a classic singer songwriter.

Simply put, LaVern Baker, one of the greatest vocalists in Atlantic Records' history, could sing anything, as she proved again and again during a seven-year run of chart hits that began with 1955's "Tweedle Dee" and culminated in 1963's "See See Rider." Her material, supplied by many of the era's greatest songwriters (Leiber-Stoller, Pomus-Shuman, and many others), encouraged her to draw on her gospel and big band backgrounds in exploring the emotional subtext of serious ruminations on life such as "Saved" and the powerful "Soul on Fire." The latter was her first Atlantic single, and on it she used virtually every vocal technique at her command to bring out the slow-burning sensuality of the Ahmet Ertegun-penned gem of erotic longing. Thus was notice served, and, in the glorious years that followed, Baker cut a swath wide enough that her name and label-mate Ruth Brown's were spoken in the same reverent terms, sotto voce. The 20 tracks here remain as vital today as they were indispensable to the music's evolution in her own time. --David McGee

A R&R/R&B Legend.......2007-07-26
One of the great advantages to having become a teenager in the early 1950s is the fact that, by having lived through the birth of R&R, you can look back and give an honest, unbiased opinion as to who constituted the wheat and who made up the chaff.
Let's face it, the early days of R&R were male dominated, and when you get right down to it, only three women were able to consistently hold their own on the charts in those days with the likes of Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Elvis, Pat Boone, Jerry Lee Lewis, and The Everly Brothers. They were Connie Francis, Brenda Lee, and LaVern Baker.
Born Delores Williams on November 11, 1929 in Chicago, her first record releases came in 1951 on Columbia's Okeh subsidiary when she was billed as Bea Baker and, later that same year, as "Little Miss Sharecropper" on the National label. In 1952 she took the name LaVern Baker while performing with Todd Rhodes & His Orchestra, and her success there led to a contract with the fledgling Atlantic Records. Her first release, Soul On Fire - fittingly the title for this CD - was written by the label's legendary founder Ahmet Ertegun, and while it didn't chart in either the R&B or pop Top 40 when released in late 1953, that would change in 1955.
In January that year, with her back-up group The Gliders, she released the bouncy Tweedlee Dee which, b/w the soulful Tomorrow Night [an Elvis favorite] went to # 4 R&B and # 14 pop. And although it was outsold in the latter market by a rushed-out Georgia Gibbs cover, the buying public would not let that happen again. From there to her last big charted hit in 1966, no one dared cover her again.
Of her 21 charted R&B and pop hits, 15 are included here, with the only missing gems being Tra La La (1956), It's So Fine (1958), So High So Low and Tiny Tim from 1959, 1965's Fly Me To The Moon and, from 1966 while with Brunswick Records, the duet with Jackie Wilson, Think Twice.
LaVern, who sadly passed away at age 67 in 1997, did get to see her name enshrined in the R&R Hall of Fame in 1991, thereby correcting a five year oversight [she should have been selected with the first inductees in 1986]. In any event, this is one CD you MUST have if you want an appreciation of one of the top three most influential female artists of Rock's early days. And while you're at it, search out the fabulous LP LaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith.
Beautiful LaVern.......2007-05-27
Not only was she great in every way these other reviews say, she was a very beautiful lady on the outside and inside. The only place I had to hear her when I was a teenager was at a mainly "blacks" cafe on the "down" end of the town I grew up in. There were no "black" radio stations then in my hometown. My closest friend and I could sometimes get a far off radio station that played this kind of music, but we'd slip off and go to this cafe (Miles' Cafe) after high school let out. I can't remember what we used as an excuse as to why we were late getting home from school. (Parents cared in those days, but would not have approved of our going in to "that" cafe.) I'm so glad I ran across this album on Amazon. Well, Amazon actually recommended it to me. Thanks Amazon. I remember most of these songs. Oh, I graduated from high school in 1957.
Lavern Baker - Absolutely Awesome!!!.......2006-03-10
I thought I would never get to hear "My Happiness" or "Shake A Hand" again, but was thrilled when I found them. This CD is one of my most prized possessions! It's totally awesome!
She sings of love like she's been there.......2006-03-08
With a soul inspired by love how can She go wrong? I should have said "She'll never be out of love", becuase it's obvious to me She's in love with the Lord of Lords. And Atlantic found her popularity was in her style. Her lyrics told of the king of kings without coming accross as a hymn. A lifestyle that's in "shake a hand" Is in my opinion inspired from Jesus' teachings, and comes accross as love thy neighbor. So with great enthusiasm she sings of her feelings for God and many are fooled in thinking she sings this way of men. A spirit so inspired is rare in music, and even more so if only men have made her feel this way.

Album Description
2007 digitally remastered two-fer from this funky and soulful '70s outfit combines their first two albums for Mercury Records on one CD. Ohio Players enjoyed huge US and European success with their unique brand of music. Skin Tight was released in 1974, followed one year later by Fire. Both albums were very successful, no doubt helped by their sexually provocative covers. The CD comes housed in a slip case and features extensive liner notes. BGO.

SWEET STICKY THANGS! .......2007-02-17
Funk On fire may not tear the roof off, but it'll burn the house down!
This is where the Ohio Players finally hit their stride and find their definitive sound (the sound they're best remembered by as a group).
These batch of jams are in a way superior to their Westbound recordings for a number of reasons. The production values have improved, the polished production gives their grooves the slinky and sleazed out atmosphere they've been searching for on their Westbound recordings, Diamond Williams hard rock styled drumming makes the grooves sound looser and leaner, and lastly, the collective musicianship of the band was as tight as ever.
No disrespect intended towards their era with Westbound records but, the basement raw production style that underpinned Pain, Pleasure, and Esctasy just wasn't appropriate for their style of loud, sexy, and plush playboy funk. This more polished style of funk sounded like the the kind of music they wanted to make - and this anthology showed that the Players made the most of it with over 28 high powered grooves and ballads.
Unlike Funkadelic when they decided to polish up their jams around the same time, The players music never sounded diluted. It just got better. The absence of Junie Morrison does make a difference, but not by much. Sugarfoot steps up and make these jams hard to resist.
Pick up these sweet sticky thangs and you'll be stuck on em' forever!
By the way, I agree with another reviewer. Where are rest of those beautiful models?
For Fans, a Great CD - For Newbies, You'll Like a GH Collection Better.......2006-06-18
For fans, this double set collects quite a few of their great tracks but it also leaves out quite a few tracks so it's not a very complete anthology.
For newbies or casual fans who want the chart toppers only, the other tracks they included do not include any hidden gems and as mentioned by others, leave out some hidden gems.
So, if you're just looking for the hits, better to get the GH collection, it's a much tighter package ... I'm also going to dock a point for not including the great covers of the original Lp's - of course, it's un-PC but why re-write history ;-)
Following James Brown and Sly Stone and Before Hip-Hop.......2006-02-02
Following the earliest hits of James Brown and Sly and the Family Stone, and preceding hip-hop, the 1970s gave us a number of really great examples of soulful funk music by African-American performers. And among the very best were the highly underrated Ohio Players, who, along with Earth Wind and Fire and Parliament-Funkadelic, were my favorites from the world of funk. I was in high school when this was out; listening now brings me back to an era of platform shoes, loud silk dress shirts, and movies like Rocky, Jaws, Car Wash, and Star Wars and to "Butterfly" a certain clothing store/head shop in my NJ neighborhood, staffed by some young, hip, partying Latinos (who'd have this sort of music, as well as stuff like Santana and Led Zep playing on the store speakers). In other words, it's a musical trip down memory lane.
This compilation, then, containing all the Players' classics, like the romantic jazz piece Sweet Sticky Thing (now these guys knew how to do smooth jazz), the dance hit Love Rollercoaster (a version of which was put to great use, years later, in the Beavis and Butthead movie) and brilliant tracks like Fopp (which like so many great pop tunes appears to be a euphemistic reference to doing the nasty) and Fire (a musical masterpiece), is a joy to listen to. While some of the tracks here are filler, nothing is unlistenable. Whatever weaknesses may be found here are more than offset by the record's many highlights.
One other point; these guys get a few bonus points from me for having some of the coolest Afros of the 70s. They always looked fly!
FUNK ON FIRE- Say It Slow Hold On.......2006-01-24
This is the most complete and thourough Players collection. It covers all the Mercury releases from Skin Tight through Jass-Ay-Lady and even has 3 unreleased cuts that were to be part of Jass-Ay-Lady (it was cut from a double l.p. to single). It highlights the cream of the crop from thier less successful latter day releases (Mr. Mean, Angel, and Jass-Ay-Lady). So along with all the early smash songs you get the smooth and Jazzy "Angel", the funky bass heavy "Body Vibes", and ahead of their time funk workouts "Ohio" and "Funk-O-Nots". Buy it and enjoy the best funk band of all time.
Where's Funky Worm ???.......2005-09-20
This is a great compilation. But I've searched and can't find the ONE song that first turned me on to the Ohio Players.
That's Funky Worm.
If I want that song I'm going to have to shell out for the Pleasure album. It seems to me that any Ohio Players greatest hits compilation ought to have the song that put the playas on the musical map.

Customer Reviews:
Lilting, Lovely, Inviting and Hopeful.......2007-05-06
I was introduced to this artist through the work of Don Miguel Ruiz. I love his message and the hopeful honesty that peppers his work. I figured if he endorsed it, it would be worth trying out. OMG... nothing prepared me for the sheer quality in Cari Cole's voice and the inviting sound of her music. Not only is the message something I enjoy hearing in each song, but it is music I really look forward to putting on the CD and being taken on a journey. Incredible voice. Inviting music. Hopeful Message!
Very inspired - Eloquent.......2007-02-07
Cari has captured some of our common experience in this recording. Beautiful words and harmonies. As I continue to listen, I continue to appreciate. Several speak to my soul with reminders like, "I will respect my body" and other affirmations which reinforce loving our Selves. Always gold to be found and appreciated in Cari's creativity.
Beautiful.......2007-01-08
Cari Cole is uplifting and inspiring. Her music is a wonderful way to relax and be at peace. Cari has a beautiful voice that just empowers the words she sings so gracefully.
A Voice of Heaven.......2004-11-08
This is absolutely a piece of jewel to keep. I do not understand why our pop culture do not play the music in regular radio channels (well, maybe I just have not listened to the radio enough). The songs Cari Cole sing in this album is something you enjoy when you re-listen. Cari Cole truly has a beautiful voice. For some people, singing the prayers sometimes help them experience the words in a more powerful way because it involves more senses. This album truly helps us to experience love and peace.
My favorites are "Whenever the Time is Now", "The Circle of Fire Prayer" and "The Lord's Prayer", though all others are wonderful as well. All songs are mellow yet suthing.
For "Whenever the Time is Now", I especially like the part about "Whoever you are is enough, Whatever you have is perfection, Whoever you are with is the one". These are the words we need to be reminded when turbulent times come when we always need to have more and better. For "The Circle of Fire", I will always remember the four words we want to bear in mind, which is gratitude, love, loyalty and justice... and these words begin with us.
Some songs are beautiful in melodies but not in words. However, these 10 songs are beautiful in melodies and artistic in words. May you experience love and peace while listening to this CD as well?
DANCE YOUR WAY TO LOVE , HEALING, CELEBRATION.......2004-06-18
Both Cari's voice and the instruments on this CD are pure and powerful- shamanic,religious,sweet,heart-opening and healing - combined with the beautiful healing messages of Don Miguel Ruiz. Will be using this CD for dance events and healing workshops. Here in Brazil, paid $10 customs fee on top of price for CD. That hurt until I listened - I would pay $300 for this CD if I had to! EXCELLENT ALBUM.......2007-07-17
It is one of the best albums I have ever heard in my life!!!!!!Its timeless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!It definetly ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!
Love this album, more than their others.......2006-07-09
I just finished reading Boy George's autobiography and he thinks this is their worst album. I totally disagree...when this album came out I played it more than when any of their others came out and I had bought each one as they came out. I love the whole album and think it is their best one. It isn't as commerical as the rest but so what. Hey George...this is an EXCELLENT album!
A forgotten gem.......2006-06-13
Despite all the negative reviews, Waking Up is strangely a very listenable album, which grows on you with each repeated listening. Sure, it doesn't have the instant recognisable hits from previous albums, and many other tracks here, though catchy, seem somewhat lacklustre. You know, it's impossible to top Colour By Numbers and there are bound to be comparisons. I really love the inclusion of Love Is Love and The Dream, two of the most beautiful ballads Culture Club has ever recorded. Don't be put off by what you hear or read, this is an album worth keeping in your 80's and Culture Club collection.
One of my favorites.......2005-10-18
there is sopmething very sentimental about this CC record. It was the first record they released after CBN and i thought it was a nice follow up.
I loved the songs on this album especially the Medal Song and the war Song...
Not as great as their other albums...........2005-10-09
When I got this album to listen to, I was kinda disappointed. It wasn't really that exciting to listen to like their other songs. I only ended up liking two songs in here. Dangerous Man is really good...I like the beats. Mistake No. 3 is a nice song too. I tried to listen to the cd more than once and it kinda work. Now I like Don't Talk About It and The War Song. I knew I should have gotten their other cd to listen to.

A Masterpiece of Harpestry.......2003-01-20
For the most part, I might call this album rather good, but not great. However, one track brings the album to a higher level: Y Llinyn Arian/The Thread of Life. This has to be one of the most amazing pieces of music I've ever heard. The melancholy passages at the beginning and the end and the light-hearted dance in the middle provide a wonderful contrast and perfect symmetry. This track alone makes the album worth the purchase.
Not To Be Missed!!!!.......2002-01-23
Perhaps you've listened to performances on the pedal/symphonic harp or the folk harp, but if you've never heard the Welsh triple harp, you have a wonderful surprise awaiting you with this CD. Robin Huw Bowen's playing is spectacular - the only thing better is being at one of his live performances. The tracks that are my personal favorites include The Day, The Thread of Life, The Bells of the Old Country, and Farewell to the Days of my Youth. So put your feet up, close your eyes, and release the cares of the day as this lovely music washes over you.
Lovely music great record.......2001-06-26
I am fairly new in Celtic (should it, really, be Keltic?), music I found the playing magnificent. The warmth he gets from his intrument the sonority are really great. Songs in themselves are very attractive. As a beginer, I do not see what better introduction to this wonderful world, there could be.

Product Description
Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! Selection of pieces for this recording was determined by correlating "The Norumbega Harmony"--our collection of one hundred six historic New England singing-school compositions and thirty contemporary works in traditional style--with a list of the three hundred most frequently printed hymn texts in America from 1737 to 1960. --Stephen Marini

Fantastic!!!!!!.......2006-03-15
This is a REALLY cool album of shape-note singings, I particurlarly like EVERY STRING AWAKE and ANTHEM FOR EASTER.
Some of the songs are kind of dreary, (Hatfield) but all in all this is COOL!!!

Do CD's ever wear out?.......1999-02-26
This one may. "Seattle" is an incredible piece for getting out on the highway, just makes you feel pumped. "This Old World" still gets to me. I listened to about twelve seconds of this CD in the store and was hooked.

Predictable? I think not Dorky Butt!.......2005-02-22
Obviously Dorky Butt knows nothing about Music, this is a musical materpiece. The Meters are the kings of groove and feel good sounds. This is a testament to their versatility and originality. I recommend this to anyone who knows good music.

This is not a real good one.......2003-12-15
This si for die hard fans only! If you like the Meters, you may not nessicarily like Fire On The Bayou. The 1st song is ok, but by the time you get to track 3, you pretty much knwo hwo the whole album is going to sound. PREDICTIBLE, and a little mundane.
A real good one.......2000-08-31
I think this album was recorded just before Rejuvenation, perhaps 1974. Love Slip Upon Ya is perhaps the greatest Meters song up to this point unreleased on CD. Several other classics, available on the Rhino 2 CD re-release (Funkify Your Life) are also here. As with all the Meters' albums in the '70s, it's all over the place. Funk, and more. Compared to Cabbage Alley and Rejuvenation, it's not quite as good. Still, this is one of the best examples of Funk music in the 70's.

Customer Reviews:
A great compilation CD.......2006-09-10
This is a great compilation.
A lot of these songs are hard to find, and a "great" compilation is one that has at least three harder to find songs on it to justify the purchase price.
Lots of hard to find and essential classics........2002-02-05
Rhino doesn't hold a monopoly on great compilations, as the "Number Ones" series shows. "Soul on Fire" has a lot of great records that didn't have the benefit of being produced by the likes of Motown or Atlantic. Any collection that has "Show and Tell", "Found a Cure", "Just Be Good to Me" and "Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But the Rent" deserves to be in every R&B fan's collection. Just listening to Carl Carlton's "She's a Bad Mama Jama (She's Built, She's Stacked)" makes me glad I made this investment. Yeoh!
