The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The resulting package is a comprehensive overview of a once--well, twice--in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's passing, will never be repeated. --Hal Horowitz

I love the music of The Travelling Wilburys on the two discs here. I also enjoyed watching the videos on the DVD. "Handle With Care" and "End Of The Line" are my favorite tracks. I love George Harrison singing lead vocals on these classic tunes. "She's My Baby" is an excellent rock and roll song. I love Jeff Lynne's electric guitar playing on this track. "The Wilbury Twist" is a fun upbeat track. I love Tom's Petty's vocals. Not Alone Any More is another highlight here. Roy Orbison's voice is so heartfelt on this track. Bob Dylan shines on the tracks "Inside Out" on "Dirty World". He is the member of the group I knew least about. He is a very good singer. "New Blue Moon" is a perfect example of how well these musicians sound together. This is fun music.

I admit it, I discounted George as the lesser talent of all the Beatles, but I was sadly mistaken,and missed appreciating his talent for collaboration and production until now. He showcases the fine talents of Petty, Orbison,and Dylan with his own and with his and Lynn's talent as songwriters. This remastering has the truly finest sound ever to grace my premium auto sound system.

THIS IS WITHOUT A DOUBT A FIVE STAR COLLECTION. BUT, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THE VINYL ISSUE THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO COME OUT? IN THE ORIGINAL PRESS RELEASE IT SAID THAT A VINYL VERSION WITH 3 LPS WAS GOING TO BE RELEASED. THE THIRD LP WAS GOING TO CONSIST ENTIRELY OF ALTERNATE TAKES THAT WEREN'T INCLUDED ON THE 2 CD/DVD SET. IT WAS ALSO GOING TO INCLUDE A BONUS POSTER AND BOOKLET. THANKS.

Even those allergic to musicals may be won over by Once, a tender-hearted Irish romance with songs by Czech Republic-born Markéta Irglová and Frames frontman Glen Hansard. (The film's director, John Carney, actually used to play bass in the group.) The trick here is that Irglová and Hansard also play the leads; because their characters are shown busking, writing music, or rehearsing, the songs are smoothly integrated in the film. The overall acoustic mood won't surprise fans of the Frames--some tracks ("Say It to Me," "When Your Mind's Made Up") have even popped up on the band's albums, though the arrangements are more pared-down here, befitting the scruffy, street-musician setting. Being the lesser-known entity, Irglová feels like a revelation; she sounds a bit like a folkie Björk on "If You Want Me," and her song "The Hill" is downright heartbreaking. Irglová and Hansard had already made the 2006 album The Swell Seasontogether, so their collaboration here feels really organic--they sound particularly good together on the title track, for instance. After seeing the movie, this became my second soundtrack album in my collection of music (Grace of my Heart was first). I love it, but the music is much more powerful when combined with the visuality of the movie. Some very meaningful lyrics go with some nice driving music. Overall very well done. Happy to own.

Great Pic, great music.......2007-08-01

Normally I don't bother to review things, but this music and movie are so special, I want to help promote them both. I've seen the movie three times and there were only a handful of people in the theater on any of the three occasions. Way too bad - especially when so much garbage out there gets huge numbers. Anyway, I've become a new fan of both the Frames and Glen Hansard. The music he and Merketa make together is exceptional. Everyone I've turned on to them has loved it. Just wish they were getting a bigger audience - they certainly deserve it! Buy the CD, you won't be disappointed.

Inseperable from the movie.......2007-07-30

For some reason subsequent listening to the track outside the movie are not as powerful. The film itself and the sountrack together are very moving but without it I'm not sure the sound track is as cohesive. Still, it's faultless, beautiful acoustic soundtrack.

The two scenes from the movie that are still haunting are the songs "If you want me" and "Say it to me now". I would actually suggest getting the DVD for the full experience. Awesome stuff.

If I could give it more stars I would. Went into see this movie that my husband had picked out. He said it was described as an unusual musical. That's all I knew. I loved this movie so much. Couldn't get the tunes out of my head. Went home right after the movie and bought the CD on Amazon. Went to see it again and brought my brother-in-law and his wife to see it. They loved it. I had already bought two CD's (planned on giving them one) even before they had seen the movie. This is one of those inexpensive movies that become an incredible hit. Trust me, go and see it.

This is a great CD. I saw the movie and like many others ordered the CD. Marketa Irglova has an incredible voice. I highly recommend this CD.

John Lennon would have turned 67 in 2007. If alive, he could well be at the forefront of bringing peace to Darfur, where more than half a million have died from violence and disease during four years of rebel discord. So to create awareness of the ongoing conflict, Amnesty International (with permission from Yoko Ono) has mined Lennon's solo work and rounded up nearly two dozen current artists to reinterpret the music, which spans the ex-Beatle's entire post-band catalog (plus a pair from while the Fab Four were still in business). As with any attempt to cover Beatles-related music, results are hit and miss, with kudos going to Snow Patrol and the Postal Service for capturing the starkness of "Isolation" and "Grow Old with Me," respectively, Mexican rock band Jaguares for uncovering the fear and fury in "Gimme Some Truth," and (surprise!) Christina Aguilera for nailing the complex composition and mood of "Mother." Other highlights include Jackson Browne's piano-led "Oh My Love," Green Day's louder straight take on "Working Class Hero," and the Black Eyed Peas turning "Power to the People" into a gospelly protest. Will resurrecting 30-to-40-year-old messages of peace and love be enough to help end the brutalities in Darfur? That remains to be seen. Fantastic cause brings together fine performers who bring to life the intensity and focus of one of our greatest singer/songwriters ever. His insight into the world is amazing. The only negative thing one can say about this album is that it reminds us of the fact that no one can sing his songs the way he did. He was a treasure who a younger generation should be exposed to more often.

As a huge Lennon/Beatles fan, I like that today's artists appreciate the genius and talent of Lennon for a good cause. And despite the talents of these artists (with nods to Avril for a great version of Mother, Green Day's excellent rendition of Working Class Hero and a good rendition by REM of #9 Cloud), most of the other cuts make me want to yank out the CD and just go straight for my CDs with Lennon's original work. I didn't care for U2's tempo changes and I didn't care for Watching the Wheels at all, I saw Matchbox 20 cover the song in concert years ago and would have much preferred their excellent version here. I also would have preferred some of the artists not doubling up on some of the songs (Gimme Some Truth), when Jealous Guy and Woman were certainly worth a shot. While I can only hope the CD will open the eyes and ears of today's generation to explore the original music of Lennon (and the Beatles) and become fans of their near-50 year old (gasp!) reign as the greatest Rock and Roll musicians of all time, I find the CD just makes me miss John all that much more and wish he was around to have given us another 25-30+ more years of his genius. Lennon's music and lyrics are so personal, it just pales when done by other artists. I support any humantarian cause and appreciate Lennon's music and message being utilized here, but I think I would have just preferred Yoko turning over the entire wealth of his estate to such humantarian efforts than hear anyone else cover his music.

Lennon fans, fear not.......2007-07-27

Any member of Amnesty International has known for quite some time about this album, and as a Lennon fan, I bought it upon release. It concerned me to see names like Christina Aguilera, Matisyahu and Avril Lavigne as artists covering Lennon songs, but those turned out to be some of the most original and enjoyable interpretations on the album. I expected more creative versions from U2 and R.E.M., but their covers were simply recreations of the originals (not that there's anything wrong with that). Highlights: "Cold Turkey" completely turned out by Lenny Kravitz, "Gimme Me Some Truth" which introduced me to Jaguares and "God" beautifully resurrected by Jack's Mannequin and Mick Fleetwood.

I bought this for a lot of reasons.....that is why everyone that enjoys various styles should have this in the collection.....To save Darfur is reason enough, but I am sure everyone would find an artist they enjoy on this album.

Easy Tiger, Ryan Adams's ninth solo studio album, is a return to form in every way. He's already shown that he can bash out three albums in one year--not to mention the hilarious fake hip-hop records posted for free on his Web site--and that he can sound as much like the Grateful Dead as he wants to in his constant subsequent touring. Backed once again by the Cardinals, Adams synthesizes and refines his approach to smooth, gorgeous country-pop. "Tears of Gold" is one of the best songs he's written in ages, while "Two" is a slowly percolating, sweet little number that recalls Sean Hayes in its soulful folksiness (someone named Sheryl Crow accompanies Adams on vocals). One of the greatest treats of this languorous, twangy album is the subtle ways that genre gets played with. "I Taught Myself How to Grow Old" is the best Harvest outtake Neil Young never wrote, while the treated, synth-sounding guitar solo on the druggy, chooglin' "Halloweenhead" sounds like it comes straight out of Journey. And "The Sun Also Sets" sounds more than a little like Rufus Wainwright covering Fred McDowell's "Write Me a Few of Your Lines." It bursts with enough melodrama as to border on musical theater. But, as is clear on these songs of love and loss, Adams has always been at his best when giving into his most mellow, dramatic side. --Mike McGonigal

I think there are really only two kinds of pop music CDs these days. There are the ones you listen to only once or twice, maybe downloading the single good song to your iPod or computer; then there are others that grow stronger, sweeter, and more necessary each time you play them. Gold was that way; Cold Roses was that way; so was Jacksonville City Nights. I won't say Adams is the best North American singer-songwriter since Neil Young...but I won't say he isn't, either. What I know is there has never been a Ryan Adams record quite as strong and together as Easy Tiger; it's got enough blue-eyed, blue-steel soul (with the faintest country tinge) to make me think of both Marvin Gaye and the Righteous Brothers. Probably ridiculous, but true. And the songs themselves are beautiful--the lyrics tightly focused and brief, the feeling one of melancholy calm that will probably be a revelation to fans that remember the old, sometimes angry Ryan Adams.

Now there's this, maybe the best Ryan Adams CD ever. And I know you want to listen to it right away. But slow down. Take your time. This album asks for that, and it will reward your full attention.

In other words--easy, Tiger.

Every Christina Aguilera record is an event to behold, and this one is no different!!

I must say, Its wonderful when a pop singer like Christina branches out and tries her hand at Country Music - in fact, she is so good here that its impossible to fault her rock-country bent of mind!

Yes, the album is called "Easy Tiger" which really plainly explains Christina's fascination with the dichotomy and hegemony of the Catholic Church, all told through the eyes of a Southern American Baptist! This insightful theological approach will appeal to the zillions of Aguilera fans in various populated nations of the world (Guam, Russia, etc).

I say - throw the woman a bone! Its obvious shes trying hard, and her music is getting better.

Yes, she does look manly on the cover but is that any reason to hate anybody? Bigot!

Five Stars. Old Chrissie has never sounded better. Waiting for Volume Two.

3.5 Stars... Average Ryan Adams album (which is still better than most others').......2007-07-28

It's been uncharacteristically quiet for a long time around Ryan Adams, after he released not one, not two, but THREE albums in 2005. Since then he has posted a lot of one-off, goofy musical ramblings on his website, but here finally comes the new album.

In "Easy Tiger", Ryan blazes through 13 songs in a mere 39 min., another departure from his usual musical outings. The musical direction on this album is a mix between the country twangy-oriented sound he offered on "Jacksonville City Nights", one of those 2005 albums, and the more straight-forward alt-country sound from earlier albums (including when he was still in Whiskeytown). Personally, I don't care for the flat-out country songs such as opener "Goodnight Rose" and "Tears of Gold", the latter of which certain people are calling one of his best tunes ever, but I simply don't hear it. Much better are "Two", first single "Everybody Knows", and the hard charging "Halloween Head". Other highlights for me include "Off Broadway" and the last 2 tracks, "These Girls", just Ryan and his guitar, and "I Taught Myself How to Grow Old', perhaps the finest song on here, certainly lyrically.

This is not a bad album, certainly compared to 90% or more of the crap that is played on mainstream commercial radio, but by Ryan's standards, "Easy Tiger" is pretty unremarkable. Ask yourself: how many songs do you find humming to yourself after you've played this album a few times? Such is life when you live in the LONG shadows of "Heartbreaker" and Gold", the perfect albums from 2000 and 2001 that will continue to define Ryan's place in the history of music.

Its hard to dislike a Ryan Adams album because frankly he is an amazing song writer and musician. However this album is really no more than I expected. That's not a bad thing. This album reflects upon Ryan's different styles with rockers such and Halloween Head. Twangy country tunes like Tears of Gold, folky numbers like Pearls on a String.

The only song I don't love is is Two, just personal taste.

If you like Ryan or maybe just don't know where to start this a good album for any listener.

Stephen King was right. Ryno keeps up the good work with his latest album. As many have already stated, it is best described as a combination of many of his past albums and styles. Nonetheless it is a collection of great, well written, heartfelt songs that sound great and grow on you with each listen as all his songs do.

All I had to do before I made my mind up to buy this album was to sample one or two tracks. Ryan Adam's 9th album was actually my introduction to his music. It's only once in a while you come across an artist like this and I look forward to discovering his back catalogue.

"Many years from now" must have seemed like an understatement to 16-year-old Paul McCartney, wondering if he'd still be needed or fed at the age of 64. As it turned out, all doubt as to the latter had ceased by his 22nd birthday (though few could have predicted he'd end up washing down those meals with the liquid pride of Seattle). As to the former? Now that McCartney, as of the date of this album's release, has reached that mythic age, his greatest work is 40 years behind him, his solo peak over 30 years gone. Does the world need a new Paul McCartney album? The answer is yes, at least as much as it needs anything else that passes for music these days. With Memory Almost Full, Macca is back. No, it's not Ram or Band on the Run. It might not even be Flowers in the Dirt--in 1989, he had a full band, the support of Linda, and Elvis Costello as a collaborator. Here, he's on his own. Literally: on the majority of the tracks, everything but the strings is multi-instrumentalist Paul. But the surprise is that it's one of his freest, loosest affairs in years, sonically reminiscent of the Tug of War/Pipes of Peace era with nods to Abbey Road in the album-closing medley, McCartney's gravelly tones on "Gratitude," and 2007's version of "Her Majesty," the palate-cleansing "Nod Your Head." It's a surprise because of the album's inescapable sense of retrospection ("Ever Present Past," "Vintage Clothes," "That Was Me") and even a bit of weariness. The next-to-last song is "The End of the End," after all, in which McCartney tells us about what he'd like to happen "on the day that I die." (He wants "songs that were sung/to be hung out like blankets/that lovers have played on/and laid on while listening to songs that were sung," and will likely get his wish.) But it never gets overwhelming, for McCartney mostly resists his tendency to get plodding and maudlin. In fact, Memory Almost Full must be the most sanguine album made during the dissolution of a marriage since...well, ever. "What went out is coming back," he sings in "Vintage Clothes," and from the sound of things, that may not be just wishful thinking. What's past is prologue; if we're lucky, what to come may be McCartney's late renaissance. --Benjamin Lukoff

Great so far.......2007-08-03

To say this album is bad or even not listen-able is foolish. One has to make a conscience effort not to like Memory Almost Full. Right off the bat the listener is reminded of McCartney's first solo effort with Dance Tonight, which is simplistic, uplifting and honest. Next, Ever Present Past hits with the punch of an instant classic not unlike My Brave Face or even Band On The Run. This song deserves air play! See Your Sunshine is a wonderful love song that is lyrically, one of the better songs from McCartney's catalogue. By the end of track three the audience has been given a lesson in Macca history with just solo McCartney sounds. When Mama Only Knows sounds, the audience is transported to the heyday of Wings with a number that truly rocks. After the adrenaline rush left over from Only Mama Knows, Macca slows things down with the contemplative You Tell Me. Not one of the better tracks but better than a lot of the songs in McCartney's catalogue. Next track that is sequenced is Mr. Bellamy which is essentially this album's Eleanor Rigby. This is probably the best song on the album. Gratitude comes next with a soulful passion that sounds like it would have fitted perfectly on Chaos And Creation In The Backyard and ends the first part of the album.
What's next is a sequence of songs that Macca hasn't attempted since Red Rose Speed Way (his fourth solo project, and second with Wings). Though this isn't as memorable as the sequence of songs that appeared on Abbey Road's latter, the songs themselves are no less than great songs. The most interesting one being Feet In The Clouds which sounds very much to be like as if it were from Abbey Road. The album ends with a song that questions McCartney's death and how he would want people to react. The End Of The End is a song that is sorrowful and yet hopeful. Other than Mr. Bellamy, this is the best song on the album. But! If that leaves the audience depressed, Macca rocks them to the top with Nod Your Head. The song is just another rocker that is fun to listen to. Memory Almost full is not how some people feel, a disappointing follow up to Chaos And Creation In The Backyard, it's just different. It is full to the bring of five star material and is actually more consistent than the former. Definatley one of my favorite of Mr. McCartney's albums.

I can't believe Paul McCartney is still releasing really good power pop. All these years later, and he doesn't seem to show *any* signs of stopping! What's more amazing is that the man is going into his mid 60's- he seems to have an unlimited amount of creative power. For years he's been making pop/rock music that's instantly enjoyable because he has a talent for making it SO melodic and always sounding so fresh, and this album continues that trend. You really need to hear some of the songs from Memory Almost Full to hear a man that's focused and ready for more. The pop songs are poppy, and the rock songs rock. Just like it's always been. No, his memory is NOT almost full- there's a lot more left in his tank.

Mediocre McCartney.......2007-07-27

Let me preface this review with a profession of my undying respect and love for Paul McCartney's music. I feel as though he has written some of the best pop songs in music history, this collection however, holds none of them.

Lyrically, Memory Almost Full is perhaps McCartney's worst. He's always been considered a bit "cheesy", but this record is beyond that. It's almost as if he played a game of Mad Libs to find song titles, and used a rhyming dictionary to fill in the lyrics.

Musically, this album meets McCartney's standards. Some very interesting arrangements, melodies, and bass lines in this one.

Sadly, without a Lennon or Costello to help sift through his lyrics to find the hidden gems, this one falls flat.

Continuum is about as apt a title as it gets for John Mayer's third studio disc. Every element, from the peerless guitar playing to the plainspoken poetry of the lyrics to the breathy-sincere singing, makes a return from previous efforts. But to weakly pronounce this another worthwhile effort from an artist the world has come to expect a whole lot from and then call it a day would be no minor misdeed, because it's also the best, boldest disc he's ever made. Taking maturity as a theme throughout, Mayer tackles a batch of adulthood's bogeymen: indifference on the uptempo chart-climber "Waiting for the World to Change," aging on the melancholy-sweet "Stop This Train," and emotional trainwreckage on the big-rocking "In Repair." That's not to suggest he's turned overly introspective--check the Jimi Hendrix cover "Bold As Love," where he hits one home for guitarists who've been living in the shadow of legend everywhere, and the hard-charging "Belief," which benefits from a mesmerizing, liquid groove. Heres the thing. Granted theres an audience for this trash, but I'm certainly not it. If you can get past the hideousness that is "Waiting on the World to Change", you are greeted with more vacuous and tone-deaf numbers rivaled only by the equally weak numbers in Mayers' back catalog.

Not to say that Mayer as a musician sucks. Not at all. In fact, hes infinitely better than both the frontmen of Aha and the Human League (I just realized that isn't saying much).

See, Im sure many people out there love the notion of a pasty white boy banging out pointless tunes on his guitar all the while hoping for added rock legend status. This isn't going to happen. Am I the only one who can see Mayer for the useless piece of garbage that he is? Apparently I am. Well anyway, this Mayer woman was once with Jessica Simpson, so that should give you an idea of what kinda trailer HE crawled out of.

One Star. And thats only because the production on this was 'passable'. This to me was an overblown attempt to be taken seriously in the music world, and Mayer only makes this more and more painful every passing album. I'm gonna go with NO.

I am not familar with John Mayer's work prior to "Continuum", but this dude got it right with this particular disc. I was drawn in by his breakout song "Waiting on the world to change" impressed with its political conscience. But after listening to the whole disc a number of times, the other outstanding songs unfolded.

The song "Slow dancing in a burning room" was the first song to jump out at me; any person that has been in a tumultuous relationship can definately relate. The lyrics in that song are amazing. After I wore that song out, I noticed "Gravity" and its awesome lyrics. Next, was the old Hendrix song "Bold as Love" Mayer might not be on Hendrix's guitar playing level, but he does a masterful job on this one. The more uptempo "Belief" then caught my ear. A song I believe is ultimate truth. Finally I felt the flavor of "Dreaming with a Broken Heart" A very haunting and compelling song and performance by Mayer.

He will be performing with Eric Clapton tommorow Bryant PK NYC 7.00AM free. They say get there early, but if he is with Clapton you might have to camp out the day before. I don't know the classification of Mayer's music, but I do believe this record brings back "excellent" lyrical content to the mainstream.

Fourteen years, a live CD/DVD, some solo albums, and one tragic suicide after Crowded House's last release comes this highly anticipated reunion. Singer/songwriter Neil Finn and bassist Nick Seymour reunited after the 2005 death of drummer Paul Hester, brought in a new member and two producers (Ethan Johns and Steve Lillywhite) to replace longtime cohort Mitchell Froom, and the impressive result is a logical and overdue addition to the band's previous four albums. Finn's knack for a melodic ballad remains firmly in place as Time on Earth coasts on his dreamy voice and introspective, hook-laden pop choruses. However, this is a more reflective collection that requires a few spins to fully reveal its charms. Finn co-writes "Even a Child" with Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, and that and the frisky "She Called Up" are the most buoyant tracks on this predominantly pensive disc. Finn has generally shaded towards a darker edge and this hour-long set might have benefited from more of the lighter touch he applies to "Transit Lounge," a song enhanced by Beth Rowley's lovely and startling wordless vocals along with jazzy electric piano and even airport sound effects. Strings, sitar, and intricate production add subtle elements that bolster the timeless musical qualities Finn has always reveled in. The ominous, even brooding "Silent House," a co-write with all three Dixie Chicks, is another highlight that sounds like nothing either has done before as it floats along on fuzz guitar and hurdy-gurdy, both courtesy of Johns. Trimming some weaker cuts would have made this a more focused listen, but Time on Earth is a worthy successor to Crowded House's existing catalog--a high compliment indeed. --Hal Horowitz

This album is awesome. but many fans of Crowded House might be dissapointed if they expect to hear the 80's or 90's CH. Every band has to grow musically and CH is no exception. After two solo albums, another Finn Bros. album, and losing the irreplacible Paul Hester, I can understand why man fans were skeptical, if not angry that this reunion happened. but I am very glad that Neil got back with Nick, Mark and the new edition of Matt Sherod (Beck's Drummer), to release a great album full of depth and emotion.

to cite a few songs, "Nobody wants to" is a great start right out the gate. beautiful melody. the 1st single "dont stop now" is a faster paced song that instantly draws you in. it has a feel of the older Crowded House we know and love as does the next song "she called up".

the album gets dark and slower (for the most part), at this point which isnt a bad thing. its just not the happy, poppy CH we're used to. I draw comparison to the song "Edible Flowers" from the Finn brother's "everyone is here" album a few years back.

theres' even some experimentation in "transit lounge". a song that sounds more like a Neil Finn solo project song. (maybe it was before the album officially became a CH album).

all in all, like the many reviews before me the album isnt as easily accesible as its predecesors.its slower, sadder and it doesnt get stuck in your head as easily as "dont dream its over" but its good that way.
Neil has a wisdom that I can only imagine comes with age. he's nearing 50 but the songwriting is like wine; it only gets better.

Ive heard rumours that another CH album is already in the works for '08-
09. I cant wait already!

I am glad that in a world of mediocrity and record-company pushed crap this band came back against the odds to give us music with A MEANING....

Who is Crowded House?.......2007-07-28

Okay, time to ruffle some feathers. When it comes down to it, the core of Crowded House is Neil Finn. Mick Fleetwood and John McVie are all that's necessary to call them Fleetwood Mac, Robert Smith is the Cure and Karl Wallinger, World Party.
That being said, how palpable is Paul Hester's absence here? Very much so. Part of that is due to that other drummer guy deigning to take his place (Matt Sherod, who does an excellent job of playing originally without being conspicuously NOT Paul Hester and who should understand that my sarcasm is aimed at detractors and not at him), but it's mostly due to the lyrical content. A good deal of this album is about the grief and guilt around Hester's suicide, with not at all subtle, wounds open and pass me the salt lyrics.
So in defense of this as a Crowded House album: their last studio album added a guitarist who was just accepted into the fold by the band and by the fans: Mark Hart. Who scoffed? Who questioned Together Alone's legitimacy as a CH album? Not many.
Neil Finn is the heart of the band, but those who surround him give a place to pump blood. Split Enz was one thing, Crowded House another, his solo work, something totally different, Finn Brothers a collaboration with an equally brilliant brother. All of that comes through here. All of those influence this work.
In the end though, this DOES sound like a Crowded House album in the way that they all do, even when they don't sound that much like each other. Compare Woodface to Together Alone, or any other CH to another. This is a new CH, with the same power, the same spirit, the same core, and yet something different.
Sorry if this review is rambling, but after a week of straight listening, I have to say that this is the most exciting album I've heard in a long time and I'm jazzed. Neil Finn is a genius who surrounds himself with geniuses. Buy. This. Album. Now.

Something is missing.......2007-07-26

I say this as one of the biggest Crowdies in the world. I have been a huge fan of every Finn project from the start, but something is missing from this album. To me this is not Crowded House. I will give it 5 stars as an amazing Neil Finn and Friends album, but not CH. I relate my experience listening to this album as I did Warren Zevon's The Wind. The musicianship is still there. Neil's lyrics are as poignant and haunting as ever, but the fun is gone. The magic that was Neil Finn, Nick Seymour, and Paul Hester is sadly missing.

I think this is a fitting tribute to Paul and I understand the reasons for reforming Crowded House, but Paul's absence is palpable. With all that being said, this is a beautiful and haunting album that every CH and Finn fan should own. You won't be disappointed with the album at all. I want to make that clear. You will, however, feel a sense of loss I think. This is as cathartic an album as you will find in some ways. Buy it, enjoy it, love it, but remember the good ol' times in your heart.

I respect your wishes Paul, but we miss you.

Suzanne Vega may be an acquired taste but after you've taken a drink of her latest album, you'll find it both intoxicating and difficult to give up. Admittedly there are those who dislike her hushed vocal delivery (which sounds at times like a female Lou Reed with echoes of Bob Dylan/Leonard Cohen where she isn't trying to "sing" the material so much as "discuss" her observations). I love Vega's delivery so sue me. She's a literate songwriter whose lyrics provide a nice constrast to the music which veers from folk, jazz, elements of techno sometimes within the same song.

"Beauty and Crime" is one of her best albums musically. This concept album about her adopted home New York is a loving and sometimes blunt assessment of the city that surrounds her and has been her muse off and on over the past twenty years. Vega has often taken stylistic detours sometimes off the beaten path like her flirtation with the techno elements that decorated "99.9f" and the smooth samba beat that showed up on "Nine Objects of Desire". Unlike those two albums the production of Jimmy Hogarth is less distracting and self-conscious than those two albums allowing the quality of the songs to shine through. For those that are interested the Japanese release has one extra song that comes in at just under two minutes. It's a good song but you won't miss it (unlike "Golden" from "Songs of Red and Gray) if you purchase the U.S. release of the album.

"Zephyr & I" and "Ludlow Street" have some of the most inviting melodies/arrangements since Vega's breakthrough album. "New York is a Woman" uses a pretty plain metaphor to describe a visitors first visit to the Big Apple. Vega's presentation is pretty straight forward folk outside of the occasional use of horns to decorate the song. "Poronographer's Dream" has an inviting beat and arrangement that echoes nightclub jazz. "Frank & Ava" and the lilting "Bound" are two other highlights. "Unbound" features the type of arrangements that were characteristic of "99.9F" but they are less obtrusive here,

As much as I have enjoyed all of her albums, "Beauty and Crime" is probably one of her most consistent, inviting and musically rich since her first two albums. "Days of Open Hand" was good but didn't extend much beyond "Solitude Standing". "99.9F" played with her sound providing her songs a great diving board to leap off into varied and different musical terrain. That continued on the stylistically diverse and often beautiful "Nine Objects of Desire" and "Songs in Red and Gray". "Beauty & Crime" brings all of this together but, more importantly, does so with the strongest batch of material she has written to date.

Trying to objectively assess any record a matter of weeks after its release is difficult, particularly when it's from such a complex artist as Suzanne Vega - as her previous albums show, her inherently "catchy" songs need time register for their underlying strength and hidden depths to be revealed... but, with time, it's quite possible that this could well prove to be the best release from this supremely gifted artist. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy another pure 5 star outing.

She's Like A Fine Wine, She Gets Better With Age.......2007-07-20

When I picked up Suzanne Vega's seventh studio release "Beauty & Crime", I did what a lot of people do these days - I ripped MP3 files for my computer. When I saw that the total time of the songs was only 34 minutes, I was a little disappointed because I have waited 6 years for her follow-up to the terrific "Songs in Red and Gray". But then I played the songs. Wow! The lady still has the magic. Although the songs are pretty short (only one exceeds 4 minutes and I actually think that song - "Bound" - drags on a little too long), they pack a punch. Personal favorites are "Edith Wharton's Figurines", "Unbound" and the one everyone seems to like, "New York is a Woman", which is about a suburban man's first trip to New York City. As a suburban man who will soon take his first trip to New York, I feel like Suzanne just gave me a tour!

I thought the CD was great and I hope she sees enough success with it that we'll hear from her again, hopefully sooner than 6 years from now. I'm looking forward to seeing her for the first time live later this year.

Arrest this Woman! - More Pointless Music from Vega.......2007-07-20

You know, I love acoustic female singer-songwriters as much as the next person (which isn't saying a whole lot), but I also know trash when I listen to it. This, unfortunately, falls into the latter category. I had highly anticipated this release, alongwith the new Sinead O'Connor record, but Sinead eventually let me down with her tepid double album of a release. Vega somehow manages to outdo her with this certifiable doozy of an album, which is a pity, since her last studio album was rather pretty.

"Beauty & Crime" (Suzanne evidently has very little of the former, and she has committed the latter here), is Suzanne's "Ode to New York" (did we really need another one?). I think Tori Amos did it best when she limited her political consciousness to one song about New York on her "I Can't See New York" from the "Scarlet's Walk" album. Well, this album is no "Scarlet's Walk". In fact, its not even "99.9F", which is amongst the weakest of the Vega albums. On its own, its an oddity with no definable purpose - which is OK if the music was great. But when the recently mangled Bjork record has more replay value than this monstrosity, I don't know what to say.

Lets consider the track "Ludlow Street". Even if you're a Vega fan put aside your love for this woman for an instant. On this track, her songwriting abilities are on par with lets say, Lindsay Lohan or Jojo. I kid you not. Here is a sample:

L"ove is the only thing that matters.
Love is the only thing that's real.
I know we hear this every day.
It's still the hardest thing to feel."

And thats just the FIRST VERSE!

Things only get worse on "Pornographers' Dream", which as a tune is acceptable enough (but then again, so were "The Garbage Pail Kids"). Here, Suzanne is apparently talking about a mans' pornographic muse or something - it isn't especially clear (or interesting):

"Bettie Page is still the rage
with her legs and leather;
she turns to tease the camera, and please us at home,
and we let her."

The problem then, if we turn from the lyrics, is the abject disrespect that Vega has for the listening audience. Granted, her tinny voice isn't exactly a selling point, but she is known for making harmlessly average folk-pop songs. What she's done here however, is bewildering. Even if you're a past fan, or a lover of music by Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann etc, theres nothing here of any worth, really.

Whats even worse is the cover photo that does nothing to elevate this beyond a vanity project of the most ill conception. I hate getting personal about artists, but in this case, one has to wonder how the record company could greenlight something so abjectly pedestrian. Its Vega after all, so its not like we expected anything groundbreaking (how could we?), but still - this is beyond whatever low expectations you had coming in.

"Frank and Ava" is a song that is again a mis-step. I have to wonder, is THIS the New York that Vega is observing? Its not terribly inviting. At best, this is like someone took the concept of sitting in a cozy Starbucks drinking a cup of coffee, and reverse engineered it on the premise of "how bad could we do this". I kid you not.

People, there have been only three great albums this year. "American Doll Posse" by Tori Amos, "Release the Stars" by Rufus Wainwright, and "Paige Aufhammer" by Paige Aufhammer. This record is nowhere near the top (read the critical reviews), and I would advise Vega from avoiding the recording room like the plague, in the future. This woman is not a musician, has no right recording music, and her place can be taken by someone more deserving. Sorry, but thats the truth.

Worst female album of the Year. Avoid.

I can listen to this over and over. When you are in a bad mood, put this on because after a few tracks you are so free from everything. At first I was afraid Bubbly was all she had to offer but I ended up liking most tracks on the cd, mostly "realize" and "battle"

I saw Colbie in concert and immediately bought this CD. She has a fantastic voice and the CD was as good as I had hoped.

I listened to the free single of the week, Bubbly I received through iTunes and liked it. Went and listened to samples of the other songs on the album and immediately knew I had to have the entire album.

Saw reviews that called her the female Jack Johnson. I find I like Coco better than any Johnson album I've heard. While he as a few strong hits, he has a lot of songs I find myself bored with and forwarding through. I don't have the desire to forward through any of the songs on Coco. Consistenly good and very listenable. Give this one a try.

I've just got to say that Colbie Caillat is amazing! I love her voice, the lyrics in her songs, and the music itself. I got started with her on MySpace and absolutely fell in love with "Bubbly." When I got the album I realized that she has many amazing songs. I have recommended this album to MANY of my friends and no one has been dissatisfied yet! Buy this album it's totally worth the price, in fact it's under-priced as far as I'm concerned. Wonderful, I can't wait to see what she comes out with next!

R&B with tempo: Justin Timberlake resurrected it, and it's proving way more influential than that other lost commodity--sexy--he claimed to be bringing back in 2006 on FutureSex/LoveSounds. Timberlake is to Robin Thicke what 'N Sync and Backstreet Boys were to a band like O-Town, in fact: he pretty much made it all possible. But even though it took one blue-eyed soulster with a hot look and an achy falsetto to bang down the door for another, Thicke presents a convincing case here that he had the goods to get us grooving all along: Evolution is a classy disc that tiptoes up to its listeners, first with an elegant duet with Faith Evans ("Got 2 Be Down"), next with a slick lament that wouldn't sound out of place on a Boyz II Men disc ("Complicated"), and then with a sweet plea that commands a finger-snap ("Would That Make U Love Me"). If you haven't purchased this c.d., you're definitely missing out. This is one of those c.d.s that come along every blue moon where you can listen to every track and enjoy it without skipping to the next. His voice is a voice you will definitely fall in love with. He made a great choice by collaborating with Lil' Wayne and Mary J. Blige on a few of the tracks. What I really enjoyed about the c.d. were the tracks with the bass guitar. I've recommended this c.d. to all my friends, and they love it as well. I recently purchased his first album- "A Beautiful World" and it's great as well. Get it now!!!!!!!!
