"One of the best voices in the business"

Product Description
Lisa Moscatiello is a singer and songwriter with roots in folk, pop and jazz. She has been compared to Annie Lennox, Sandy Denny and kd lang. In a review of her latest CD, "Second Avenue", Billboard said she possesses "one of the most gorgeous vocal instruments in all of folk-tinged pop," and in Rock 'n' Reel (UK) critic John O'Regan stated "Her voice is a mixture of strength and serenity perfectly capable of causing a quiet storm." Moscatiello's first album, Innocent When You Dream , established her as a singer able to embrace a wide variety of songs and make them her own. On Second Avenue she continues in this vein, with Jesse Winchester's sultry "Biloxi" alongside the Eurythmics' "Love Is a Stranger," Abbey Lincoln's bossa-inflected "Throw it Away" and a sensuous Northern Irish love song called "The Lass of Glenshee." On Second Avenue, she also unveils the debut recording of "Sleepin' Late," a ballad penned in 1965 by Motown songwriter Fangette Willett.

In recent years Moscatiello's original songs have become a staple of her live performances, and fans will recognize the catchy title song, "Second Avenue", a dryly humorous look at unrequited love, the driving "Fugitive" co-written with Arthur Loves Plastic's Bev Stanton, and her penetrating contemporary folk ballads "Night Bird", "Bed by the Window" and "Angry Town." *Second Avenue was originally released in 2000 by Wind River Records. This 2002 re-release contains two new cuts, "Little Maggie" and "In the Here and Now."

3 out of 5 stars A piece of history.......2006-06-03

Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.

1 out of 5 stars A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19

I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

    Album Description

A collection of songs ranging from the historical, political, philosophical, to those of a more personal and spiritual nature, all of which are seamlessly woven together by Tim's poetic lyrics and vivid imagery.

The new album for the most part includes songs which directly or indirectly relate to the area in which he was born and raised - Grey County! From the societal ill of hatred of "difference" which culminates in the death of a Grey County local ("Dan's Song"); the restlessness and dreams of hometown youth ("We Believed"); the song about a lone gander from the pond by his childhood home ("The Canada Gander's Lament"); to the beautiful melodic ballad, "Grey County Winter", Tim's songs feature his compelling vocals and superb musicianship on 6 & 12-string guitar, mandolin, bass, dobro and banjo. Among other great songs, Tim also offers up a rollicking version of Richard Farina's tune, "Pack Up Your Sorrows", which he heard sung by Mimi Farina at Grey County's (Owen Sound) first Summerfolk Festival where he was founding artistic director.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Symphony in Amazingly Good Sound for '40s!.......1998-09-16

Rieti's Sinfonia Tripartita is a good-natured neoclassical work, deeply influenced by mid-period Stravinsky, which is not otherwise available in a modern interpretation. The Nov. 25, 1945 Toscanini broadcast is also available in a wretchedly produced British CD set of Toscanini Italian music renditions, but in this outstanding and well-documented Premier release, original archival sources were used to prepare a tape for Rieti's own library: we are as close to hearing the sound the engineers audited in the Studio 8-H control room as we are ever going to experience! The dry and clinical pickup is not inappropriate for such elegant, chamber-like scoring; there is full and rich bass; and highs extend nicely up to about 8,000 Hertz: almost state of the art for 1945. The result is not significantly inferior to the finest commercial recordings of the era: audio quality is comparable to the wonderful 1945 Bruno Walter NYP Mahler 4th, as heard in the recent Sony "Bruno Walter Edition" CD transfer by Seth Winner. The Rieti symphony seems to this auditor to be the finest of his works thus encountered: a strong, interesting, charming, and engaging piece. Why do the critics constantly harp that Toscanini was not interested in modern music? We have plenty of examples -- such as this work -- that give the lie to this shortsighted notion.

The Gold & Fizdale monaural 1950s recording of the Second Avenue Waltzes is not as transparent as the Toscanini broadcast; nor are the works as interesting as the symphony. But the sparse duo-piano repertoire certainly benefits from the existence of the music. The same distinguished pair are accompanied by Ansermet and the OSR in a live concert reading (also mono) of the Concerto for Two Pianos, which -- like the waltzes -- does not make the powerful and positive impression of the Sinfonia. Finally, there is a seventies stereo recording of the interesting, neo-classical Trio, by the Beaux Arts ensemble, in very good two-channel sound. The annotations are to be commended: this production is obviously a fine work of love and respect for Rieti's artistry.

    Album Description

Lisa Moscatiello's rich and deep alto voice-described as "one of the best in the business" (Gene Shay-WXPN, Phildadelphia)-is the magical thread binding together Second Avenue. The shimmering arrangements featuring fiddle, bouzouki, and harp alongside acoustic, electric, and slide guitar reflect Lisa's background in Celtic music. The quality of songs, her own and others, reflect her impeccable taste, and the diversity of style reflects her talent for taking songs-from folk rockers to torch songs to traditional ballads, and making them inimitably her own.

Blues/jazz stylist tastes? -- friends who heard it, bought it. New age? -- other friends, same result. Celtic? -- more other friends, same results. Alternative rock enthusiasts--my son's friends? - same result. This album really does entrance across musical genres I hadn't heard Lisa sing for some years and was just enthralled with the richness and depth of this album. You will be also.

5 out of 5 stars Second Avenue is Sublime.......2000-06-01

I recently got a chance to see Lisa perform live in Silver Spring, Maryland. She is not only a superb singer/songwriter, but she has the funniest, most engaging and charismatic stage personality I have encountered in years. The songs on this album are all outstanding, but in particular is Lisa's own "Second Avenue" and her rendition of "Throw It Away." Lisa's voice is an intoxicating blend of passion and laughter; she is the ultimate first date: sexy, witty, fun-loving, and incredibly mysterious. And no matter how many times I play this album, Lisa leaves me perpetually curious.

5 out of 5 stars What an Amazing Voice!.......2000-05-04

Lisa Moscatiello has one of the best voices in music today, period. Her voice is what lends continuity to this diverse collection of songs. On Second Avenue she delves into jazz, celtic, and folk, and even gets away with doing an acoustic version of a eurythmics song. Her original material also stands up nicely against well-chosen cover material. One of the best features of the album are the fine instrumental performances. I never thought I would like an alto sax in a celtic song, but it works! Guitarist Dave Chappell lends a unique blues touch to the mix, and Fred Lieder has some gorgeous cello lines. The musician's performances, though strong, don't detract from Lisa's vocals. BUY IT! You won't be disappointed.

"For The Women", Enoch's 3rd solo recording, is sure to delight Scottish/Celtic music lovers and folks with a passion for politics (both outside and inside the home!). This 16-song album is a collection of love (and the obligatory betrayal!) ballads with great interpretations of "The Tyne Boatman", "Billy Taylor" and others; historical story-songs, as in Sheena Wellington's song about female juteworkers in "The Women O' Dundee", or that told by the ghost of a 19th century coal-miner's widow in "Dialogue between the Coal-owner and the Poor Pitman's Wife"; contemporary struggles such as Nancy White's poignant portrayal of immigrant women workers, in "Sewing Machines"); some feisty and spirited tales (the renowned "Monday Nicht" by Sheila Douglas); and many traditional treats. Guest musicians include Anne Lindsay on fiddle, Ian Bell on guitar and accordion, and Shelley Brown on flute.

            Album Description

A welcome addition to the music collection of traditional Scottish music enthusiasts with a passion for love songs and politics.

From love and betrayal ballads, as in "Mary Morison" (Burns) and "One May Mornin'" (trad.), corporate greed ("My Mother's Sewing Machine"- EK), to the various laws and customs which violate the rights of women ("Stanley's Song for the Women", "Edinburgh Maggie" - EK), all the songs in this album have an edge, smooth and hard. And of course, in Enoch's initimable fashion, his great wit peppers the whole collection both in selection and interpretation of song.

Accompanying Enoch are Ian Bell on guitar, Shelley Brown on flute, Tim Harrison on guitar, and Lawrence Stevenson on fiddle. "Love, Lust & Loathing" was recorded/mixed/ mastered by Tim Harrison at Second Avenue Studios, and produced by Tim and Enoch for Second Avenue Records in Toronto.
