Clay Tyson is a Toronto based singer, guitarist and songwriter who happens to be the son of the legendary folk duo Ian & Sylvia. While he has been influenced by the musical world of his parents, Clay's music is all his own: earthy, rootsy music that draws on country, rock, and folk influences.

Raised in a highly creative environment, Clay studied piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music and later attended the Humber College Music Program. He also spent seven years as a writer, orchestrator, bassist, and pivotal member of Look People, with whom he toured extensively throughout Canada, America, and Europe. In the last few years, Clay decided to move his focus away from his bass playing in order to concentrate on his own writing and acoustic guitar playing.

As a solo musician, Clay has it all. He is a soulful, expressive singer with a subtle sense of phrasing and a deep rich tone. His guitar style can range from fast, sharp and clean to languid and pretty; from a warm gospel feel to folk finger-picking to a thumb-busting unplugged-Hendrix groove. And he is a songwriter of considerable talent who writes about day-to-day romantic struggles; keeping your faith and your head above water; and more. His new album "Kick It Down" offers 12 finely crafted songs, brilliantly produced by veteran ace Danny Greenspoon (Great Big Sea, Spirit of the West, Victoria Williams), and featuring stellar performances by the Breit Brothers (Kevin on guitar, Gary on keyboards) -- not to mention Clay himself. Kick It Down runs the gamut from contemporary, radio-friendly pop ("I Wait," "The Heart Is") to soulful excursions ("Good Intentions," "Kick It Down") to rootsy ballads ("A Stitch in Time," "I Find You") to sheer amusement ("The Bug," "Ditch Digger"), all delivered in Clay's unique style.

Another spin-off from Stereolab, with less in common with its source than Laeticia's side-project Monade (Which is also worth a listen, particularly "A Few Steps More"). This one is from their bassist, Simon Johns, and draws a bit from Stereolab's hypnotic riffing style, but new vocalist Mary Hampton has a cleaner, lighter soprano voice...and I'd say this stands on its own merits. Fans of Adventures in Stereo might find it familiar territory, though the song structures are generally more complex and elaborated upon. Recommended. "Trinity Neon", their initial effort, isn't as strong, a band finding its footing; Half of its tracks are instrumentals, and as with Monade, not up to its sophomore effort. Those who love "Blow It Up" and Stereolab completists may want to check it out.

              Steve Ross has such an affinity with Cole Porter that no less an authority than Michael Feinstein said he couldn't begin to approach Ross's "perfect rendition" of "Can Can." That song is only one of the 25 Porter tunes both familiar and unfamiliar collected on this 1996 album, Close. Like fellow cabaret legend Bobby Short, Ross doesn't have the most beautiful singing instrument, but he has an expert way around a lyric, and his piano accompaniments are perfect ("I Get a Kick Out of You" is only one example). If you happen to like New York cabaret, you'll happen to like Steve Ross. --David Horiuchi

              Steve Ross is the ultimate performer when it comes to Cole Porter's songs. He's such a gifted piano player, has a lovely voice, and his arrangements are so perfect you want to crank up the volume and belt out the tune yourself. He has such sensitivity and emotion, knows just when to change tempo or syncopate a beat. I've driven many miles to see him perform and I'd love to do it again. He's the best, and this album is his finest. Absolute perfection.

              Most of these songs are familiar, but Steve Ross' unusual capacity to clarify lyrics with his voice, his enunciation, and even his piano accompaniment combine to bring out the wit and sophistication of these songs in ways that are new and utterly delightful (not to mention delovely). Altogether enjoyable.

              Steve Ross is without doubt one of the finest cabaret artists currently working, and this recording amply proves his talent. Steve takes loving stroll through the Porter canon, embellishing each song with his own brand of wit and sensitivity. His excellence as a pianist and knowing way with a lyric make for a superb listen. Every track is a superlative example of Steve's artistry. Not to be missed.
