Beginning with the last piece on this CD, we have a brief Wedding Canticle, a graceful, lovely melody sung smoothly by the choir and underpinned by the odd but also gentle combination of flute and guitar. The middle work, Shadows, is a song cycle composed in 1979 and consisting of eight songs based on 16th- and 17th-century poems; the subject matter is sleep, death and dream-states. Baritone Jeremy Huw Williams colors the text well, and the guitar accompaniment is fluid and interesting, but the cycle is not particularly compelling. The Mass of the Children, however, which takes up most of the CD, is a beautiful, affecting work. It begins with a lively tune and moves at once into a well-blended "Kyrie"; the "Benedictus" is rich and full, with both children's and adult's choirs joining together. The "Agnus Dei" incorporates William Blake's "The Lamb" into the usual text, with the kids' voices intoning it with charm, and the final "Dona nobis pacem" is warm and peaceful. This is a fine program, and even if the Song Cycle is not up to the standards set by the Mass and Canticle, there's still enough here that is superb, and the performances are excellent. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
The Chamber Orchestra Version of Rutter's 'Mass of the Children'.......2006-05-15
It is fashionable in some circles to deride the music of John Rutter because of its strong popular appeal, and indeed it may be true that Rutter is the John Stainer of our era. That is, his music is simple enough to be taken up by amateur groups, church and lay alike, and is enjoyed by many although it possibly will not be remembered by posterity. Somewhere I saw Rutter compared with Andrew Lloyd Webber, but that's a specious notion; Rutter is much more skilled than Webber, regardless of the man-on-the-street popularity of the latter. Rutter is a very careful and meticulous writer with to the ability to write tunes that become veritable 'ear-worms.'
The major piece on this CD is the 'Mass of the Children,' written in 2002. Although recorded before, this is the first recording using the version for chamber orchestra and organ along with mixed choir, children's choir, and soprano and baritone soloists. Rutter conducts forces from Clare College, Cambridge, his alma mater, and gets a marvelously focused and precise performance. He also conducted the earlier CD using full orchestra, which I have not heard. He says he was stimulated to write this piece by the strong memories he retained from singing in a children's choir in the first recording of Britten's 'War Requiem' which uses the same forces. Indeed, the first few minutes of the piece, the Kyrie, sounds for all the world like it could have been written by Britten. Indeed, throughout the 'Mass' (particularly the 'Gloria') one hears echoes of Britten's modal triad-based harmonies; of course the sound of children's chorus singing English words also reminds one of Britten as he wrote so much for trebles in his long career. Early on in his career, Rutter was heavily identified with the Faure Requiem and one hears similarities to that work. Still, this is indubitably Rutter through and through. And for those who love his music, this recording (or the version with full orchestra on Collegium) is a must-have.
The disc is filled out by a charming 1979 song cycle for baritone and guitar called 'Shadows.' It is sung idiomatically and lovingly by Jeremy Huw Williams accompanied by a recent Clare graduate, guitarist Stewart French. The eight songs, all evoking images of the evanescence of life, are set to English poems from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The most familiar text is probably Herrick's 'Gather ye rosebuds while ye may.' Full texts are provided in the booklet, but Williams's diction makes referring to them virtually unnecessary.
The six-minute-long 'Wedding Canticle' for mixed choir, flute and guitar is set to Psalm 128 -- 'Blessed are they that fear the Lord and walk in his ways...' -- a text used in the Anglican wedding ceremony. Flutist Daniel Pailthorpe joins guitarist French, weaving filigree in and around the simple, gentle choral sound.
Not enough can be said for the Clare College Choir and the Farnham Youth Choir. Their contribution is impeccably tuned, musically shaped and entirely engaging.
Scott Morrison

Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have done it again. This is a spectacular collection. It makes you feel like getting dressed up with a lot of glitz and glam and going dancing. Though I must admit that Fredrica Von Stade's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" will definitely touch your heart.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Piece of Recorded Music.......2006-11-13
This invention in sound doesn't just provide a great score to an unheard of film, but it makes as an achievement in the entire history of music up through today. Such feeling and emotion conjured up by means of using every sound conceivable in the entire sound catalog. This composition goes straight up there with the best and greats of bethoven and mozart, or john cage and merzbow. This is the widest and broadest range of sound, let alone instrumentation ever accompanied by mortal needs. This is worth just owning knowing you have it to add to your collection. equation/bottom line = bodysong is worth your life.
Gems glittering among the dirt.......2006-08-31
I have never seen "Bodysong", the movie by Simon Pummell on the journey of life from conception to death. And I hold on to the possibility that you must, in order to fully appreciate the composition that Mr Greenwood of Radiohead has cooked up to accompany the ingenious filmwork. Being a huge Radiohead fan myself, I was, and still am, surprised at what I heard. I followed this solo project of Radiohead's beloved `abusive' guitarist practically from day one. Yet whatever it was that I was expecting to hear, this was anything but.
Bodysong the album is not pop. It's not an album packed with 'songs', for singing along to. Melodies are most often not the key here. Indeed, many of the tracks feel like very violent sequences where something visual is the key (prime examples 'Trench' and 'Convergence'). Even if you are a Radiohead fan, that is no golden ticket to your falling in love with Jonny Greenwood's first solo project.
There are, however, and very notably, jewels to be found such as no one but a Radiohead member could invent. "Clockwork Tin Soldiers" starts out sounding like the title, but then strolls into a haunting, glockenspiel-supported electro-track. "Peartree" is a delightfully reflective track with plenty of room for self-interpretation. The melody, one of the few, is a soaring journey through an indescribable sonic landscape. The three-part track "Bode Radio/Glass Light/Broken Hearts" flows together so seamlessly that you can't tell where one `song' ends and the other begins. If, indeed, that is what Greenwood meant by the title. For the first minute or so, there is no real melody; like a movie you keep moving on. But the initial electronic sound effects soon vanish to allow for what I can safely say is the most heart-tremblingly stunning piece of music that this album has to offer; a synthesiser leading into multiple violins and a cello, playing a melody that words can not describe.
As you can see, Bodysong is not for everybody. I still don't like it as a whole. Apart from the tracks I especially pointed out in the last paragraph, of course, which to this day kill any doubts I might have as to whether the purchase was worth it. But, of course, the three tracks are those that appeal to me, especially. The remaining melodies have a kind of jazz ambience to them, like "Milky Drops from Heaven" and "Splitter". "Moon Trills" is a nice melody, no doubt... I don't know. This is not an album made together of songs, but a soundtrack built up by scenes, whether musical or otherwise. For the former, I strongly recommend this cd if you are curious. It is certainly good.
Good job, Mr. Greenwood........2006-08-05
I've been a Radiohead fan for a good long while now (I don't expect you to care). So, when I heard about this album, I nearly wet myself (thankfully, I didn't). As soon as I had the album in my hands, I felt... better. Like everything in the world was going to be allright. I thought to myself: "What will this be like?" "Something like "Paranoid Android meets Just?"
I put it in my C.D. player, and what did I hear? A... a burst of music. Magic! A full orchestra lit up my speakers like a thousand night candels (or "seomthing" to that effect). This wasn't what I expected, or anything close to Radiohead. But it was good! Damn good. I listened to the entire C.D., and when I was done, I felt somewhat... complete.
It was unlike anything I had ever heard before. Hardly any guitars (but not in a Kid A type way -- in more of a string quartet way), often a jazzy feel, and well, just really good. In case you (yes, you!) are wondering, "good" is the best word I can think of. Well, mabye "excellent, outstanding, exceptional, and wonderful also fit the bill. But yeah.
Buy this album. For the good of your soul.
Bodysong.......2006-06-05
I like soundtrack music. It has ups and downs. If you like Tangerine Dream you'll like Bodysong. Amazon has it listed as Collin Greenwoods album and it is his brother Johnny that put it together.
Fantastic.......2006-04-16
This is a soundtrack to a film by the same name. It is Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead playing hauntingly beautiful songs. Someone said this had no musical value, but that is ridiculous. If I was half the musician he is I would be happy. I would strongly recommend this.

A Hidden Treasure.......2006-05-01
The sound quality on this digital recording is excellent and very clear. The performances have a wonderful elegance and refinement, with a joyful liveliness and love of music-making in the fast movements and a soothing beauty in the slow movements. Anthony Halstead and The Hanover Band are among the finest and most respected conductors and orchestras in the period instrument movement.
These are three lyrical and graceful concertos, written in the transitional style between Baroque and Classical that is sometimes called "Style galant" or "Roccoco". In listening to these performances, one can hear the influence of J.C. Bach on early Haydn and Mozart. It is also apparent in listening to this exellent CD why, although he has not attained the stature of his father, J.S. Bach, or of Haydn or Mozart, J.C. Bach is nevertheless justly recognized in his own right as one of the most talented composers of the 18th century.
The CD insert is also first-rate, with interesting and informative essays in English, German, and French on each of the 3 concertos, as well as background information on Anthony Halstead and The Hanover Band. I thoroughly agree with the previous reviewers' statement that this CD is a "hidden treasure." Total Time = 57:00 minutes. Highly recommended, together with Volume One of J.C. Bach's Woodwind Concertos.
Exquisite 18thC. Woowind Concertos.......2004-08-13
Here are three superb concertos for oboe, flute and bassoon by Johann Christian Bach.
The Oboe Concerto in F major No. 2 is fantastic, likely written for his friend and oboist Johann Christian Fischer, and found with his other compositions in London where he died. The Larghetto is a beautiful, melodic piece with excellent phrasing and dynamics of Anthony Robson.
The Flute and Bassoon Concertos are well done as well respectively by Rachel Brown and Jeremy Ward, backed up by the solid period orchestra of The Hanover Band.
Fine recording and exhilirating woodwind concertos. Hidden treasure! Spurred his friend and admirer, Mr. Mozart to do his woodwind concertos.

The modern-day traditional Jewish music revival is filled with artists exploring klezmer's Eastern-European roots, but you'll hear no clarinet and little violin on cantor/educator Richard Kaplan's Life Of The Worlds. Although these are traditional songs, there is a broad range of the Diaspora represented on his second album, including Afghani, Spanish, Moroccan, and Algerian traditions. Kaplan dives into the sacred and the secular, the prophetic and the exultant, finding commonalities amongst different tribes and fusing them together. Musical accompaniment comes in the form of an occasional flute, piano, and violin as well as Moroccan clay drums, oud, dumbek, and other pre-modern-era instruments, but the instrument at the center of each song is Kaplan's voice--his high baritone majestically soars, quavers with sensitivity, and rings out with joy. To hear him sing solo versions of traditional Niggiun is to hear a world-class master savor the multifaceted nuance of each note and transcend the concept of song, turning it into religion and high art. --Tad Hendrickson
Album Description
A remarkable collection of vocal performances of Jewish sacred music from the Middle East, Andalusia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia - songs of exultation, longing, love, and Divine immanence - accompanied by an ensemble of masterful musicians.
Instruments include: oud, ney, kanun, Egyptian accordian, violin, mandolin, dumbek, doira, riqq, Yemenite can, tar, saz, clarinet, mey (Turkish duduk), tilinca (Rumanian shepherd's flute), piano, string bass, balaban (Klezmer drum set), cimbalom, and a chorus of voices.
Among many special songs, the CD features an 'eco-lament' (ecological lament) based on lament melodies for the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. It is called "Lament on the Destruction of the Garden of Eden" (Kinah Lekhurban Gan Eden), and updates the use of these tunes to mourn the wounding of our larger temple, Gaia - Mother Earth.
LIFE OF THE WORLDS contains 18 songs, 77 minutes of music, and contains a 32-page booklet which includes informative song descriptions; all texts are provided in transliteration, English translation, and in Hebrew or Yiddish.
This CD was three years in the making, and presents the first recordings in North America of several songs from the treasure-chest of Jewish sacred music.

Beautiful Performance & Crystal Clear Sound.......2006-01-06
The sound quality on this digital recording is excellent and very clear. The performances have a wonderful elegance and refinement, with a joyful liveliness and love of music-making in the fast movements and a soothing beauty in the slow movements. Anthony Halstead and The Hanover Band are among the finest and most respected conductors and orchestras in the period instrument movement. Although the length of the CD is a bit short, at 48:42, it is still a very worthwhile purchase.
These are three lyrical and graceful concertos, written in the transitional style between Baroque and Classical that is sometimes called "Style galant" or "Roccoco". In listening to these performances, one can hear the influence of J.C. Bach on early Haydn and Mozart. In listening to this exellent CD, it is also clear why, although he has not attained the stature of his father, J.S.
I thoroughly agree with the statement of a reviewer of Volume Two of this set of performances that this music is a "hidden treasure." Highly recommended, together with Volume Two of J.C. Bach's Woodwind Concertos.
Wonderful Wind Concertos.......2004-08-19
JC Bach certainly contributed signifantly to his namesakes' gifts to music, here exhibited by three wind concertos.
The Oboe Concerto Halsead believes was one of Bach's favorites and the magnificent Minuet formed basis for the subsequent Flute Concerto. It was discovered in the estate of Furall, an oboist.
What strikes one is the influence these had on Mozart who admired this Bach greatly.
Excellent playing and recording.

Complete Music for piano DUO.......2005-06-15
Beware Amazon's header, this is not the complete Poulenc piano music, just the four hand/duo stuff.
But, luckily, it is an excellent survey, by far the best of recent vintage. Tanyel and Brown, not soloists on their day off but a true piano team, are totally sensitive to Poulenc's mixture of elan and tenderness. They get the saucy bounce of the little early sonata, the stark profundity of the later, greater one, and the time-stands-still sighing of the wonderful Elegie.
And, as is not often the case, the two pianos are well recorded, sounding present but pleasant in a large room acoustic.
