Dave Cousins is the lead singer and songwriter of The Strawbs. The group continues to have major success in Europe, the USA and Canada, and has sold in excess of 3 million albums. Rick Wakeman was is a former member of the Strawbs and makes a guest appearance on 'High Seas'. Conny Conrad wrote the title track of 'Pico', the stage musical about the Beatles early days at the Star Club, that ran for five years at the Delphi Theatre in Hamburg; he wrote the anthem 'Hello Stuttgart Go' for the World Athletic Championships in 1993; his mood music albums sell 100,000 copies each. The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

If you like military tunes and marches, this 2-CD is a good choice. The orchestration is good, it is well played and the quality of recording is good. If you like this kind of music, it is a good choice to buy.

I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.

Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

I love this CD because it combines into one disc many outstanding and well recorded (Telarc DDD) performances of a variety of patriotic military tunes. For someone who doesn't want to break down and buy the entire "Victory at Sea" set, along with soundtracks to "Patton," "Casablanca" and more, this is a fine choice. My only complaint would be that conductor Kunzel has a habit of adding his own flourishes to pieces. But the outstanding clarity of the Telarc sound and the grandness of the Cincinnati Pops counters this.

      Dave Cousins is the lead singer and songwriter of The Strawbs. The group continues to have major success in Europe, the USA and Canada, and has sold in excess of 3 million albums. Rick Wakeman was is a former member of the Strawbs and makes a guest appearance on 'High Seas'. Conny Conrad wrote the title track of 'Pico', the stage musical about the Beatles early days at the Star Club, that ran for five years at the Delphi Theatre in Hamburg; he wrote the anthem 'Hello Stuttgart Go' for the World Athletic Championships in 1993; his mood music albums sell 100,000 copies each.       Having no idea who Conny Conrad was I never got around to this until now, despite being a big fan of the Strawbs and Dave Cousins. I figured it was an acoustic folk collaboration. Man, did my jaw drop when the first track, Call to Arms, came on. This is the heaviest, proggiest song that Cousins has been involved with since the Strawbs days of HERO AND HERIONE and GHOSTS. Right down to the mellotron (or damned good imitation of one) the song echoes back to anthems like "Down by the Sea", and has one of the most impassioned vocals Cousins has delivered since "Grave New World". But what about the rest of the album? The songwriting is all very strong, with really great melodies. I find it much more satisfying than DEJA FOU, the last "real" Strawbs album. The only drawback (and the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars) is the production - the mix is murky and Cousins' voice gets completely buried in a few cases (what the hell is he saying on "Haiku"?). Other tracks feel like demos, with off the rack synth sounds filling in for what should have been real strings or other instruments. Nevertheless, if you ever enjoyed the powerprog days of the Strawbs or Cousins at the top of his game don't miss this album! It's a great surprise! (And I'd mention more about Conrad, but I still don't know who he is! On the merits of this I'll do some investigating and find out though!)

        I have purchased two copies of each CD from different sources and find the recordings are apparently faulty on the last two tracks of each. I thought my first incident was my fault, however, the second had the same flaw.

        Amazon lists Richard Rodgers as both the composer and conductor. Of course, Robert Russell Bennett is the conductor. Amazon's correction form doesn't allow for an accurate correction suggestion. I haven't played my old records for a while, but the CD sounds as I remember them. Too bad it doesn't contain the full contents of the three records.

        I have a 2-audiotape set with 3 additional pieces that are sadly missing here. Magnetic North so well portrays the cold and harsh war in the Aleutian Islands as it was presented in the TV series. It always raises goose bumps at its haunting conclusion with strings emulating the artic winds. Mediterranean Mosaic and Mare Nostrum are 2 others that I would have preferred over the Symphonic Suite, which I have never heard on 2 different audio tape versions or a 33 1/3 vinyl set.

        After reading the reviews and discovering that the CD is not the same as the original records that I still own, I do not plan on purchasing the CD until RCA releases what was/is a magnificent piece of work. Perhaps it is political corectness that is keeping them from releasing the "original" work "uncensored". Until such time as they give the present generation a look into one of the greatest recordings made, I will stay with my 33 1/3 rpm recordings, and transfer them to my computer myself...

        5 out of 5 stars Remembering the Victory at Sea TV Series.......2003-01-09

        The most memorable portion of the Victory at Sea music is the descriptive and haunting "Song of the High Seas" introduction. Rodgers was absolutely brillant in matching the music to the film footage of the series. His marches and many of the other themes can be easily hummed. I find myself doing it all the time. I believe the original music became available in 331/3 LPs. Three were issued. The first one was played by "Members of the NBC Symphony" conducted by Bennett. It was later reissued with the orchestra as the RCA Victor Symphony(assembled for special performances). There is a slight difference in the sound and tempo of "Song of the High Seas" between the two orchestras. Two more LPs followed, both performed by the RCA Symphony with sound effects(airplanes, artillery) added in the third LP. All of the music from the 3 LPs were then put together into the two CDS now available("blue" and "red" ones). The "green" one contains selections from both. I do not know if the entire score was ever performed in concert. I believe the "Symphonic Suite"(selection of the major themes) was arranged by Bennett and was done, so it could be performed at concerts. It is also included on the CDs. There was at one time a recording done by the Cincinnati Pops of Victory at Sea selections, but I have not listened to it. This is really fine music, Richard Rodgers, at his best and admirably performed by the RCA Victor Symphony.

        The Marco Polo exploration of the music of Carl Michael Ziehrer continues. Volume 3 was recorded in 2000 by the same players as are heard in the other volumes, but the conductor this time was Christian Pollock, who had a hand in orchestrating one or two of the items. Several pieces receive their first ever recording.

        Ziehrer, the slightly younger but chief rival of the Strauss brothers in Vienna, gave his dances and marches evocative and picturesque titles, just as they did. The piece I enjoyed most here is a march. Its title translates as "If one has money, one is great". Track 7 is a delightful set of Styrian dances.

        Besides regretting that Marco Polo rarely engage Viennese orchestras to record their surveys of Viennese dance music, I have a few specific reservations about this CD. The waltz "Gebirgskinder" originally featured a zither solo in the introduction and coda, and a humming male chorus. What we hear has no chorus, and a harp is substituted for the zither. I regret also that the marches slow down as they end. I wonder what suggested this to the conductor, Christian Pollock, who is also a musicological researcher. Robert Stolz, who knew the Ziehrer and heard him conduct, recorded his marches in strict time throughout.
