Product Description
For a band that had over a dozen hits, the lack of Sam Donahue & His Orchestra on CD is astonishing! Collectors' Choice Music have compiled 20 hi-fi tracks of Sam's great touring band of the mid-'50s, highlighted as always by Sam's superb tenor sax work.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18
Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....
The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!
The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!
The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!
This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.
One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07
What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!
Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16
Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

History's already shown that the self-proclaimed master of "bad taste" has always had impeccably good taste, even at his most extreme. A large part of the reason that his aesthetic has had a real and unabated influence since the early 1970s is that there's nothing forced or ironic about his approach to film-making, including the soundtracks to his movies, which the director terms "little-known, weird vintage music." Waters says that the selections on A Date are "all romantic seduction music I would play if I had you over." Naturally, it's an off-kilter patchwork selection; most folks would not try to seduce someone with either an Ike & Tina Turner number or "Sometimes I Wish I Had a Gun," sung by Waters habitué Mink Stole. The collection is fun and veers from mellow crooners and hopped-up rhythm and blues to forgotten rocker hits from the '50s ("Tonight You Belong to Me" by Patience and Prudence) and '70s ("Jet Boy Jet Girl" by Elton Motello). If the collection sells well, the director promises to bring you Breaking Up with John Waters, as if you needed another reason to buy this one. --Mike McGonigal
Customer Reviews:
John Waters - Yes!.......2007-05-16
The other reviewers have said it all, and I'll add my praise - exceeded my high expectations. I don't know where he found some of the tracks. I remember hearing 'Jet Boy Jet Girl (he gives me head)' on the radio in the 80s, and hadn't been able to find it since - until now!
Not for children or prudes. All you cool people - enjoy! John: do some more compilations! How about a DVD of weird movie scenes?
Fabulous!.......2007-05-12
This isn't the first time John Waters has compiled a list of his favorite tracks to a theme (See, John Waters Christmas...). The man has a knack for resurfacing some of the oddest and classic tunes of all time. This album is themed around a Macabre-Valentines Day-ish Date with John....I won't go into specific tracks because you can see them here... but some of the songs on this album are virtually impossible to find anywhere else. This is a must-have disc for the fan of Waters or otherwise!
A date with John.......2007-05-12
Great music to accompany a great guy, John Waters! He's a sweetheart!
a date to remember.......2007-05-07
You're hopelessly seduced from the opening track "Tonight You Belong To Me" (Patience and Prudence) - "the first record I ever shoplifted". From there on it's just a metter of when John will pop the question. But he's not easy - and he makes sure the mood is set just right.
All these tracks are in pristine condition and the compilation is arranged and produced to perfection. Anyone who has tried their hand at mix tapes will swoon at John's informed skill and remarkable taste.
I bought the CD just for "Jet Boy Jet Girl", "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Johnny Are You Queer?" - but every other song here is a true gem. I am exuberantly happy with this purchase.
The music is enhanced by the liner notes in which John guides us through his planned evening of romantic bliss - and respects us enough to leave us with a beautiful song for the morning after ("Bewildered").
For all of us who will never be fortunate enough to date John Waters in person, this is the next best thing.
Sensational Stuff.......2007-03-23
John Waters should be releasing compilations more often - A Date With John Waters is simply fantastic. A great collection of oldies, mastered from different sources but all sounding incredibly vibrant. Now I know why my mum would often sing "If I knew you were coming I'd've baked a cake"! Hilarious, hokey, somehow imbued with an incredible tenderness. Waters' film soundtracks are often great, also; one of his most recent, "A Dirty Shame", is very fine.

Customer Reviews:
When swing was king . . ........2005-01-23
Just what the title says, this is get-up-and-dance music and recalls the great days of swing bands playing on the radio and for ballrooms full of dancing couples. This CD features band-leader Spade Cooley, who came into his own during the war years of the 1940s putting together a band that was big even for a big band, with violins, guitars, brass, reeds, accordion, piano, and his trademark harp. In his arrangements, there was also great slide guitar, and his fiddles could play in harmony. He teamed up with singer and bass-player Tex Williams, who later had a band of his own, the Western Caravan. Five of the tracks on this CD are from his organization.
As this CD demonstrates, Cooley and Williams played to a wide variety of musical tastes, and there are classics here, including "Yearning," "Sioux City Sue," "Crazy 'Cause I Love You," "You Can't Break My Heart," and Cooley's own "Spadella." There are several polkas and traditional songs ("Wabash Cannonball" and Popeye's "Hornpipe Song") and comic songs ("Leather Britches"). There are two Bob Wills rags. Hollywood Indian motifs show up in "Redwing" and "Pale Moon." Four songs feature the honey-smooth baritone of Tex Williams. Other vocalists include Ginny Jackson, Red Egner, Del Porter, and Smokey Rogers (pictured with Cooley and Williams on the CD cover).
With 27 tracks and almost an hour of music, this CD is a terrific trip into the era of big bands and western swing. And a great bargain, too.
western swing at it's best.......2004-08-18
this is a great CD, great music, great rhythm and a whole lot of fun to just listen to. This was recorded when Western Swing was at its' peak, a lot better than the stuff they try to pass off as Western Swing today (that's why all the new bands go back and re-record all of the old stuff.....).
The real Hot Spade Cooley Band.......2003-11-26
Get this record is you like real western Swing. Get this if you have been disappointed by more moderate later Spade Cooley Records. Cooley was a disciplinarian, not much of a musician himself, who aimed at cornering the pop audience holding the band down to "the businessman's bounce."
This is his original band with a group of hot musicians he gathered up in the hey day of Western Swing during WWII. In the end the group tended to be too creative and hot for Cooley, and he fired them all, something he would continued to do until the mid 1950s when he was able to front a pathetic easy listening music sounding all women band.
Most people in this group went on in a matter of months to launch Tex Williams great bands of the late 1940s which really are arch typical Western Swing. Despite, all this history, this CD is is boot scooting fun. Like any dance record with a dance band, you hear an interaction with to get the audience dancing that you might not hear on a studio or concert album.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2007-05-06
I am sorry that I cannot give you a personal rating for this item. I ordered this for a friend (John Hawkins). John is 91 years old and not only does he not own a computer, but has no intention of buying one. He sometimes asks me to check on a particular artist on band from the 30s or 40s and then I print out my findings and let him pick out what he wants. That is why you sometimes see his address for the product to be shipped to. However, I have asked him for his opinion of "Your Dance Date/At The Aragon Ballroom" and he rates it with 5 stars. I am ten years younger than John so my taste in music runs to the big bands of the 40s.
Thank you for the very good service that we have come to expect from Amazon.
Now This Is A Dance Band.......2005-02-20
I have waited for quite some time for these releases, and they were finally released, put on one Disc. I had the original first copies and recorded them on tape for, I was wearing the orignals out, especially the "Dick Jurgens at the ARAGON BALLROOM", Listen to his CLEAR-mixtures of songs and see how everyone Danced to this band. His rendition of CUMUNA-was the first song I wore out on his original releases. Every time you would read a Critic on Dick Jurgens, most of the starting lines would be: "NOW THERE IS A DANCE BAND"

As good as light music gets.......2004-11-09
Among the several 'classics up to dates' by James Last I listend to, this is undoutably the best.
Peace, Peace, Peace...........1999-04-21
I have many CDs of the series and this is one of my favorite. I think this is very next to the volume 5 in its beauty and depth. Just beautiful and peaceful. I was mesmerised by the Spring Song(Mendelssohn), which was uniquely arranged by Last's own way. He is genious!! I highly recommend to start collecting this series with this album or volume 5.
Best in this series!!!!.......1999-01-27
In this album, the listener is in for a special treat, 11 of the best classical interpretations done by James Last. This 1977 release contains two tracks from the opera "Madame Butterfly", which are simply the finest versions of these familiar pieces I have ever heard. The Chopin piece is wonderful. There are a wide variety of different tempos evidenced in this recording. In this recording, the casual James Last fan may find himself/herself forever "hooked on" the beauty of his music. Hansi's trademark strings never sounded better!
