Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Half the tracks are march or played like one.......2007-06-05

This disc reminded me of Leonard Bernstein's conducting: somehow many of his conducting session became marches. Many tracks on this disc is like that. I am a novice when it comes to classical music, so part of allure of this disc was that it contained many titles I didn't recognize, so it wasn't a total loss. I guess I should have read the track listing more carefully... what is Washington Post by Sousa doing on dance compilation?

4 out of 5 stars decent for dancing.......2006-12-31

There are quite a few tracks on here that do well for recital music. THere's different ones from the unoriginal swan lake's and nutcracker..my students loved to hear what came next....it gets better towards the end of the cd!

5 out of 5 stars Recommended.......2005-10-03

For those who would enjoy a fast, fun, and cheerful kind of classical music, I guess this cd is a very good choice. Also, if you want to make your kids a classic music lover, you could start with this fun, lighthearted music.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful selection, but not really dancing music.......2000-06-27

I agree that this is indeed absolutely beautiful light classical music. It is indeed a perfect beginning to a lifelong passion to have classical music playing in the background or to turn up the volume and immerse yourself in it. But it consists of mostly ballet music, several marches, polkas, an entrance of the gladiators, a gavotte and just to show that he can-can, a delightful little march by Beethoven of all people (Turkish March). Or can you dance to the continuous hypnotic rhythm of Ravel's Bolero? Quite tiring, I would think. Nevertheless, great music at an astounding price. Consider buying all or most of the "25 Favorites" series. You will not regret it

5 out of 5 stars This Will Keep You Dancing.......2000-03-30

If you like to dance and you like classical, this cd is a must have. Who says you can't dance to classical? This CD proves those who think so wrong. Highlights include Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty, Mendhelsson's Midsummer Night's Dream, Gounod's Dance of the Slave Girls and Faust, Dvorak's Slavonic Dance, Offenbach's can-can (yeah!) Katchaturian's Sabre Dance and Ravel's Bolero. All these are excellent. Sousa Marches are here too. You must get this CD if you are a serious lover of the classical. In fact, this was my first Classical CD. Make it a part of your life and dance to the great beats of the classics ! Yeah I'm serious.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I can name that tune in three notes.......2005-02-19

My family likes to put this disc in on shuffle and play name that tune. I wish they made more discs like this, only with more obscure works.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous CD.......2004-10-14

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Sampler.......2001-11-09

For the beginner. You will be surprised at how many of the 99 themes you recognize here. It is an easy introduction to classical music. Nice booklet too.

5 out of 5 stars Useful........1999-03-22

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely outstanding.......2006-08-03

If you enjoy pomp and circumstance type music, you must have this CD.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-05-08

I agree with Mr Hazelwood. This recording is lack luster and I usually like Michael Murray's recording. Too much brass and no organ. I agree that Columbia (Sony) should re-release the E. Power Biggs Music or Organ Brass and Percussion. That is the best recording and the correct mixture of instrments I have heard in a long time. I recently sent them (Columbia) an e-mail making that request. Maybe if they get enough e-mails, they would know that we demand the best of the best.

1 out of 5 stars Where's the Organ?.......2006-02-19

What a big disappointment! How can so many exciting pieces of music be made to sound so dull? Someone should take a torch to Mr. Murray's organ bench; pehaps then there would be some fire to his performance. The Richard Strauss processional has been a longtime favorite of mine, but this lackluster pressing is beyong decent! Please, Columbia, re-release the E. Power Biggs recording of many of the same selections ruinrd on yhis CD!

5 out of 5 stars Would Definitely Recommend!!.......2005-09-30

I enjoy all types of music. I think that this CD would appeal to anyone, not just classical fans. The musical selections are high energy and powerful.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Superb!.......2005-07-13

It's hard to fathom the restraint of some of the prior reviewers' praise of this CD. As you would expect from any Telarc "fully digital" recording, the overall sonic impact is gratifyingly dynamic, and the performances are impeccable. Moreover, many supremely masterful composers are included-several of whom you might otherwise never encounter. At this price, buying this highly enjoyable CD is a no-brainer.

3 out of 5 stars Nyman's Two Pieces.......2007-01-31

This CD has two pieces by english composer Michael Nyman. The first is the score for the movie "The Piano". This is a well known piece, and its cliched, new age-y undertones made it not very good one in my opinion. The second is more promising: called MGV (french for Music at Great Speed), it was commisioned apparently for the unveiling of a high speed train in Europe, and this great piece really suggests of trains and railways.

5 out of 5 stars One disk or two disks?.......2006-05-14

I agree with the two previous reviewers that The Piano Concerto and MGV are great music to listen to any time. I also found myself playing the CD over and over. Two enthralling performances.

However, the version I own includes a second CD with short tracks from other Argo releases. (Listed above for listening.) I also played that one over and over again and finally began searching for CDs by those composers. It took forever to find works by the Fitkin brothers (?), but they were well worth the search.

The Piano Concerto and MGV are must haves for any fan of minimalism and especially of Nyman, but try to get the version with two disks. It will open your eyes to many more composers in the same genre.

5 out of 5 stars Emotional height achieved.......2002-02-03

This album contains two pieces of music: first being the full piano concerto, based on soundtrack. The second is an orchestral music called MGV, which was written for the inauguration of the TGV Northern Europe Train Line. Opinions towards this album has been mixed, reflecting the divided opinions among classical listeners towards minimalist music in general. Again, like most minimalist music (especially Michael Nyman's work), you really cannot rely on reviewers' opinions alone. You must decide for yourself.

In my humble opinions, Nyman has successfully transformed the various sountracks in into one piano concerto. The level of technical skills required to play the Piano Concerto has been raised, obviously to accomodate the fact that a professional pianist (Kathryn Scott) rather than an amateur pianist/professional actress (Holly Hunter) was playing the piece. The emotional impact has not been compromised by this transformation, and the influence of Scottish folk tune is still very evident.

In the second piece, MGV, Nyman took the audience through an imaginery train journey, with emphasis on the sense of adventure, wonder and triumph. One can see in it Nyman's intention to celebrate human achievement and human triumph over odds.

On both counts, this album has successfully achieved what most minimalist music strives to achieve - an elation of human senses and starting the fire of human imaginations.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and enjoyable.......2000-10-24

After purchasing this CD I found myself playing it nonstop for some time. I was familiar with some of Nyman's other music and wanted more material to listen to, and this fit the bill perfectly. The piano concerto is largely taken from the songs he wrote for the movie "The Piano" cast into a 20th century concerto form. The performance is clear and well balanced. Some may find it a bit repeatitive and really lacking a continuous development of the themes, but those who appreciate minimalist music will enjoy the cd. MGV is based around driving rhythms throughout the piece, very similar to the music written in the Peter Greenway films for which Nyman is most famous. More minimalist than the concerto, I think this is the better of the two offerings (especially the first section). As a whole the two compositions complement each other very well, making it another great album from the Argo label.

Robert Redford's fable of a cynical, young, white war veteran (Matt Damon) learning the perfect golf swing--and the meanings of life--from a mysterious black caddy (Will Smith) is typically rich in subtexts, from racial discrimination to armchair existential philosophy. As she did for the period dramaThe Cider House Rules, English composer Rachel Portman imbues Vance with an American sense of time and place. Bookended by the bluesy jazz of Fats Waller, Mugsy Spanier, and Duke Ellington, Portman's elegant orchestral score is rich in powerful brass and string-driven melody and emotional nuances. Portman once again displays a strong affinity for the plaintive resolve and emotionally longing colors of Aaron Copland's most familiar works, and there are moments here that subtly evoke passages of that composer's Lincoln Portrait. It's a fine irony of modern film that one of Copland's spiritual heirs and most effective practitioners of his essentially male American musical ethos is a soft-spoken Englishwoman. --Jerry McCulley

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A soundtrack as wonderful as the movie!.......2005-08-17

When I first saw the picture, the music was one of the two bigger impacts it had on me (cinematography being the other). I had one of those experiences where as soon as the credits were finished I was already planning on purchasing the soundtrack. Problem is the average CD store did not hold it. Lucky for all of us there is Amazon.com!
The music composed by Rachel Portman is nothing short of wonderful! Very American in its orchestration and has often reminded me of the score to JFK (John Williams) & The Natural (Randy Newman/ironically another Redford film). From the scenes where Damon's on the golf course and the camera performs its classic Hitchcock maneuver, to the humorous driving sound as Theron's character takes on the city councilmen, this score proves to be one that must be cherished by all movie music goers.
This is a soundtrack that can inspire people with imagination and heighten the experience of outdoor activities. I myself have played this score while hiking back home and it has performed beautifully. When I play this in my free time it has allowed me to drift away from troubles and distress.
As for the tracks that aren't Portman's composition, they are equally enjoyable. The sound of Muggsy Spanier, Ellington, & Fats Waller are just pure boogie, woogie, oogie know what I mean? Makes you wanna swing.
It's a good soundtrack, one that I am lucky to have in my horde. If you can get it, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Why is this soundtrack so hard to find?.......2004-02-18

It goes without saying that a good score can either brilliantly enhance or possibly downright destroy a movie. With the film "The Legend of Bagger Vance" you have a beautiful story accented by beautiful scenery and beautiful period sets and costumes. Anything less than a beautiful score could lessen the appeal and, ultimately, the certain quality that could make this good movie great. Rachel Portman has developed a reputation for making okay movies unforgettable. Any less of a score could have ruined "The Cider House Rules" or even more so "Chocolat". Ms. Portman's score is a perfect example of how image and sound should come together to create something beautiful. In addition to the evocative and nostalgic opening fanfare-like theme, Ms. Portman welds together at least three other prominent themes, as well as a virtual abundance of recurring motifs. But, unlike her recent score CD for "The Human Stain", this album contains a much more varied mix of music that, most times, leaves the listener simply wanting more, but at the same time feeling totally satisfied. Unfortunately, if this review has successfully whet your appetite for this album, all you have to do now is find a copy for a reasonable amount of money. This soundtrack is highly reccommended, but good luck finding it.

5 out of 5 stars The Legend of Bagger Vance.......2003-02-20

Great soundtrack, very relaxing and emotional. Very pleased with the cd music, but disappointed in what I had to pay for it. Also, the seller represented it as NEW and it was not. It had been resealed!

4 out of 5 stars This soundtrack was worthy of an oscar........2002-11-07

When I saw this film I remember thinking, "what an extraordinary soundtrack" and I immediately went out and got the cd. And now a few years later it almost always is in my cd player. I love, love, love soundtracks and this is a homerun to me. I don't remember what the competititon was for the oscars that year but I wish it would have won. I don't even remember if it got a nomination. If you like Randy Newman's work, Aaron Copeland and maybe Hans Zimmer, you will like this cd. She did a really wonderful job. I wish I knew more about the composer.

5 out of 5 stars This is my favorite CD.......2001-11-04

I purchased this CD to find a music selection for my daughter's skating routine. I had previously purchased "Cider House Rules" soundtrack and thoroughly enjoyed it, so we purchased this after listening to the samples on Amazon.com. This soundtrack has to be the best one I have heard! I watched the movie after I had listened to the CD, and I must say that Rachel Portman's music brings the movie to a whole new emotional level. I, too, wonder why this was not nominated for an Oscar. Rachel Portman has that special gift to communicate through her music. I look forward to purchasing more of her works.

    Album Description

This session recorded in 2004 features alto sax great Phil Woods and his Little Big Band performing memorable jazz songs written by legendary composer/arranger Quincy Jones. Phil is joined by 8 other jazz musicians including Bill Charlap on piano and Brian Lynch on trumpet.

"As this marvelous record so eloquently bears out, Phil Woods today is at the very top of his form—and that, my friends, is a claim based on nearly fifty years (help!) of listening to this extraordinary artist, live and on record. Here Phil pays homage to another dear friend, happily very much alive, and Phil's junior by about 16 months, the one and only Quincy Jones. The title is derived from a l956 LP—Quincy's first as a leader—called "This Is How I Feel About Jazz". This is not the place for even a brief resume of Q.'s amazing career; suffice it to say that by then he had already developed an original voice as an arranger and composer and paid his dues as a member of Lionel Hampton's trumpet section, sitting next to Clifford Brown and Art Farmer. (Digression: It is a tribute to Phil as a person as well as a musician that he has been able to maintain his own regularly constituted group for lo, these many years; Steve Gilmore and Bill Goodwin were on board when the quartet started in 1974; it became a quintet nine years later. Pianists and horns have also shown staying power; Brian's been on board since 1992, and Bill Charlap joined in `95; he's on his own now as one of the best and brightest, and he and Brian just recently joined forces on a fine CD.) Quincy is bound to love it. As will you, dear listener, and not just for a spin. This is the real thing." Dan Morgenstern- Director, Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University

5 out of 5 stars Phil Woods late in his career . . ........2004-12-12

. . . has mellowed like fine Belgium beer. What he may have lost in fire he's more than made up for in sheerly gorgeous phrasing, as well as a kind of savvy penetration to the heart of his increasingly well-chosen material; his recent disc with Herbie Mann--and even more this one--proves it beyond a doubt.

This record, a salute to Quincy Jones, whose bands Woods played in extensively in the mid-sixties, finds the alto master at the absolute top of his game. Pianist Bill Charlap, especially, seems to have caught the deep-swinging vibe of these proceedings as he consistently sets the perfect rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic table for the other bandmembers. But all the band members, from the core quintet to the additional four filling out the little big band, are totally locked into the classic jazz sensibility laid down here.

Jones richly deserves such a retrospective, constantly proving to be an unending fount of tuneful creativity equally adept at writing swing, blues, bop burners, or ballads. Even though straight-ahead jazz of this sort isn't generally my cup of tea, I'm entirely takes by this warm and wonderful disc.

4 out of 5 stars Fine and Mellow.......2004-11-20

"This is How I Feel About Quincy" is, as far as I know, Phil's third Cd with his Little Big Band. The band consists of his quintet augmented by two additional reed players and two low brass players. One of those earlier CD's "Evolution" on Concord may well be my favorite Phil recording. The other, "Real Life" on Chesky is a winner, as well.

This CD is up to the same standard musically as those, but the feel is a bit different. Those CD's emphasized hard blowing, whereas "Quincy" is more mellow and laid back. The tunes with one exception are by Quincy Jones, who in the late '50's and early '60's was involved in real jazz and often employed Woods in his orchestras. Many of the tunes will be familiar to fans of Quincy's music from that era, and they are all expertly arranged by either Woods or Brian Lynch. There is a nice variety here with up tempo numbers like "Meet Benny Bailey"; "Hard Sock Dance" and the rollicking "Belly Roll"; ballads such as "Quintessence" and "The Midnight Sun Will Never Set", and medium tempo groovers such as "Jessica's Day," and the relaxed "For Lena and Lennie." Jones certainly had a gift for writing memorable melodiies. Phil adds his own attractive tribute, "Q's Delight."

The sound of the Little Big Band is most agreeable. The French horn and trombone (euphonium in several cases) add considerable depth and color to the ensemble. The soloists are in good form as well, with Woods, pianist Bill Charlap, and trumpeter Lynch getting the most space. Lynch is especially outstanding, and for my money takes solo honours on this CD. Phil, as always, plays with depth and verve, and Charlap is an understated but very effective soloist. Reed players Nelson Hill, Tom Hamilton and French hornist Bobby Routch also get several solo spots, with Routch being especially effective on "Belly Roll".

But what one most remembers from listening to this CD is the overall sound of the band, warm and mature. There's no major fireworks here and no one is aiming for the fences. But everyone is having a good time, just like long-time friends getting together and having a good conversation about subjects of mutual interest. It is our privilege to listen in.

Congratulations to Phil, the Band, and Graham Carter of Jazzed Media for this beautifully recorded, well-rounded 68 minute CD. This Cd is one of the treasures of 2004 and warmly recommended to Phil fans and to all who enjoy mature, melodic jazz.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars It's only snippets of the music!.......2006-02-12

This CD only contains 30-60 second long snippets of each of the pieces. It could be a teaching tool but is not something you can just put on to listen. It does contain reference to popular TV and Film works that contain the music.
